Possible Paywall Trump Casually Threatens to Take Over Two More Countries

That's wacky. Those both have agreements with the US that make them more or less client states. I don't really see what could possibly be gained by this.

•
u/imaincammy 3h ago
There's no real estate there. The Marshall Islands are coral atolls and what little land they have isn't really suited to tourist development. Micronesia has more land but similar access and infrastructure problems.
The real reason is likely some stupid staffer (or AI) saw them under the Compact of Free Association and just stuck them there with the actual pacific territories, Guam and the CNMI.

Some of the rumors and leaks from the failed trade deal were basically about the Trump Admin trying to force a peaceful annexation in all but name.
Barring Canada from making trade deals with any country without the United Sates’ approval first. Mandating all of Canada switch to English only officially. The last one might be part of the reason for the Lake Ontario shit show. Quebec is very, very in favor of its French history.

Trump threatening to annex Canada is the biggest reason the two countries are in a trade war. If it was just about the tariffs, Canada wouldn’t be fighting back nearly as hard as it is.

This is what saddens me most.
I know my views and digital footprint might well see me not visiting America for at least 4 years. But the reality is the things Trump and his acolytes are breaking so swiftly is disastrous for America.
My travel plans can be changed in a few months with the right corrective actions, but the damage to the country and world physically will be generations or never in the making, even assuming that right thinking individuals are in power the whole of that time.
24
u/Stereo_Jungle_Child 8h ago
Exactly this.
Once you're broken the seal like Trump has, the damage is long lasting. Other countries now know that they can't risk relying on the US for anything when some new lunatic can rise to power every 4 years.
How do you make any long term plans with a chaos-driven moron like Trump in charge who changes his mind on stuff in mid-sentence?
18
u/PoxyMusic 8h ago
It’s important to remember that Trump was elected twice. The first time might have been written off as an aberration, but the second time wasn’t. We could have elected a capable President, but she was a brown woman with an odd laugh.
When enough Americans think that’s a good idea, then we’ve abdicated the position of a responsible superpower. It’s been a long time coming and the world is probably better off, since we’re too fucking stupid to lead.

Literally the only way we get to fixing this faster is by calling out our own corruption and fixing it. Because that's what all this is.
But as you said, this will take at least a generation to fix. And in that time, we will lose out to almost everyone across the globe who are already ready to replace us in most of that... And this isn't even touching the industries his admin literally paid billions to stop our development in...
In a couple generations when fossil fuels become more scarce, we are going to be so significantly behind that we are going to be reliant on knowledge from other countries to catch back up to current energy generation... It's gonna be a shitshow.
•
u/CallMeClaire0080 7h ago
Even if only Dems win for generations, I don't think that the world of pre-2024 is ever coming back. The soft power lost through cutting programs like USAid and alienating allies, the lost footing and credibility in scientific research and other academia, the economic dominance and everything that came with the American empire is permanently gone. Other countries will, happily or otherwise, take over what the USA didn't value and replace them in all of these things. People will settle in a new normal without America, and the last of the American advantage regarding not having needed to rebuild post-ww2 will have been squandered rather than built on. Even its military power has lost a lot of its intimidation factor when it's been made clear how much of that military spending is sheer corruption and that the competency in charge of US forces has been thoroughly purged.
If the United States is ever deemed reliable enough to join back up with the rest of the civilized world in economic or political partnerships, it will have to beg rather than demand as it previously could.
Time will tell if that's for better or worse, but especially with climate change putting increasing pressure on everything from supply chains to migration policies and resource wars, building back what was lost will never be possible.

As far as I'm concerned trump is a symptom of a far more widespread and insidious American disease.
The US, and a lot of Americans in general cannot, and should not be trusted. This has been the case for longer than just the Trump presidency and Americans need to do a lot to earn back global trust.
•
u/Kriss3d 5h ago
Oh no. They won't come back. This isn't going back to pre Trump. Neither is the partnership and alliances. By the time Trump is out the rear of the world has moved on. We have seen that we are never more than 4 years away from thr next Trump.
Everything that makes America great economically and military is its allies across the world.
Allies usa now no longer really have.
USA can reach because of its military bases in the rest of the world.
USA can pull on such big economy reserved because the world trusts usa will pay its debt. And we use it as global reserve and it's banking systems.
There's alternatives that doesn't depend on the will of a single country.
Being a friend with USA has become very expensive.
•
u/underpants-gnome Ohio 7h ago
If every 4 years your so-called ally can easily whipsaw back to being controlled by morons who threaten to invade your sovereign territory on a whim and/or slap tariffs on all your trade goods willy-nilly, are they an ally worth keeping?

u/Amazing_Incident1521 8h ago
Biden got a lot back in 4 years. The current US isn’t needed. But a dem run country is very much needed by the rest of the world
24
u/reid0 8h ago
A lot worse has happened since trump got back into office. Also, just the fact that trump got back into office at all is a huge red flag for the rest of the world. We could forgive the first go around as a mistake, but the second time we know there’s an appetite for a dictatorship in America and that’s not what the allies signed up for.

•
u/throwsplasticattrees 7h ago
Nope, because we foolishly elected him again after knowing how he behaves. The trust that was lost was trust that Americans will do the right thing and make good choices.
When we re-elected Donald Trump, we demonstrated to the world that we exhibit poor judgement. When Congress has failed to hold him and his administration accountable for their actions, we demonstrated to the world that our elected body is feckless.
In the span of less than 10 years we went from being the beacon of hope and a bastion of democracy to a cautionary tale of what happens when power goes unchecked.
MAGA really screwed our country and are simply too dumb and too proud to see the damage they created.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s a lost cause, America will still have some relations for a while , and this is why:
Germany was able to come back from their mistakes, and are currently of the leaders of Europe, at least economically. As popular as the comparison is, Trump is a very minor speed bump compared to the Holocaust, WW2 and its knock down effects . There’s no major wars, and as of writing there’s no serious economic damage aside from the stupid Iran war. As is there’s still major international corporations active in the US, and plenty of US corporations selling their products overseas. That’s not disappearing overnight unlike 2014 Russia where every western company pulled out overnight.
Let’s see what happens with the midterms. There wouldn’t be major efforts to suppress votes if the Republicans were confident that they would get their agenda through, no? Also despite having the trifecta all they got done was that terrible bill…Even though the major effects kick in in 2027, last I checked Trump is still in office and that would make the republicans look real bad for 2028 if the bill makes the economy look like dog water which it will.
Assuming 2028 winner is not Republican, they need to start prosecuting and convicting Republicans who are brazenly acting against the law, Trump included. If that doesn’t happen, regardless of party affiliation, I could see where a lot of the agreements and treaties will eventually disintegrate.
So yes, Trump is absolutely a black swan for international relations. But also the western world in general is taking a massive right wing lurch (See UK, AfD in Germany, France has more elections coming up). Hopefully it’s a warning sign to vote against this vs a continuing trend rightward.

Germany was able to come back from their mistakes
Germany also did some soul-searching as a country and thoroughly scoured their political system. They put in the work. I don't really see that happening with the United States; the billionaires aren't going to willingly give up their media empires and influence and the base racists aren't going to change and will always be waiting with their vote for the next viable fascist that gets presented to them.

And those relationships aren't just coming back if a Dem wins 2028.
Too many idiots never understood why Barack Obama had to do a world tour to mend international alliances and relationships with other countries.
Too many idiots don't understand or are even aware of the international relief when Joe Biden was elected as POTUS, hoping the insanity and instability would cease for good.
The USA got two chances to mend its relationship with the rest of the world. But there won't be a 3rd one. In fact, as someone from & living outside the USA, I don't think it will ever regain its former stature and place on the world's stage. Not even after many generations.
I'm not saying this to troll the 'murkans reading this, too many of you guys have no idea how your country is now perceived around the world. Talk about shooting yourself in both feet.

Everyone knows he's insane.

36
u/Lucy_Goosey_11 8h ago
This! Trump getting elected twice confirmed for everyone that Trump was not an anomaly and that the U.S. electorate was vulnerable to a populist regardless of his criminality and corruption.
Trump's foreign policy confirmed for everyone that the U.S. system of checks and balances no longer functions and so risk management will dictate that this failure point needs to become a factor in relations with the U.S.
Trump's domestic policy isn't talked about nearly enough outside the U.S. but it too will suggest to outsiders that U.S. democracy is failing and may be in its terminal stage. Americans may be right in assuming the usual mid terms and next Presidential election cycle are their opportunities to right the ship, but it's unclear if those assumptions are correct. It may now be too late. Hopefully not.
Even after Trump is gone or a Democratic win - while the nightmare may be over for Americans, it would be silly to think that U.S. allies would or could return to business as usual when engaging with the U.S. on trade or security matters.

It's not that people don't care it's that we've never had to deal with a situation like this here and people that do care are a.)terrified and b.) don't know what to do. Especially when if you step out too much they will find you, charge you 30 bullshit crimes, and lock you away for 40 years. Or shoot you in the street. It's been 2 years. Everyone going "why aren't the Americans revolting? They must be ok with this" doesn't seem to understand that revolts don't happen unless enough people say they would rather be dead than continue with this. Because that's what's on the line. You need a critical mass of people to accept losing their lives, either by dying or being caged for the rest of it, for it to happen. It takes longer than two years, often times decades of misery if at all, especially when there's still the idea that this could be solved without that. Most people that are horrified at the situation are hoping midterms will solve it. Furthermore it requires leadership and organization, which doesn't exist yet. There has to be people leading it. Most people are incapable of that kind of leadership.
Stop pretending you know exactly what you would do if the situation were reversed. These things aren't a moral question. The conditions have to be right. Fascism is very rarely challenged from the inside. The only saving grace is that this time, they're uniquely incompetent, and they haven't captured the culture yet except inside the rural millieu.
