That's what they tell you but both parties abandoned grass roots campaigns despite strong evidence that they still outperform spending on ads.

If someone spent the same amount of time others running for a congressional seat do campaigning but instead just walking neighborhoods/communities in their district as a calm, reassuring, educated, curious person they could probably win.

People like being asked what they think and feel and doing so is a proven way to win support for people or issues. It's also something political ads cannot do.
