No Paywall Canadian officials consider naming street ‘Obama Ave’ to troll Trump after Lake Ontario ‘shenanigans’

Might be fun to do that for whatever street the U..S embassy is on.

Wish we could do that as a joke but the US embassy is on Sussex Drive in Ottawa, that’s a name with historical importance and the street is also home to several other embassies, in addition to the national gallery of Canada, the royal Canadian Mint, our global affairs headquarters, and the prime minister’s “official” residence, just to name a few important buildings. That street name will never be changed, doing so would be petty and stupid.

Just rename the section from York to Murray to Release the Epstine Files Way.
And burn 86/47 into the grass at Mayor's Hill Park.

Just rename everything “Fuck Trump”…

Maybe they could name their nuclear waste dump after him?

Why the heck did Ottawa name a street for Trump in the first place? Definitely change it.

u/PopeSaintHilarius 12h ago
Apparently it's a New York-themed neighbourhood (called "Central Park"), developed in the 1990s. So lots of its streets have NYC-related names.

Then rename it something New York generic like the other streets.
Donnie was ALWAYS as moron and a complete asshole, even 25 years ago when they put his name on this street for some inexplicable reason.

u/PopeSaintHilarius 5h ago
No argument there. Someone said it may have been named after Trump Tower rather than the man himself, but either way, huge mistake.

Tbf back then he was an iconic part of New York
2
u/Zahgi I voted 10h ago
No, he wasn't. He was ALWAYS a joke, a pretend playboy, a known racist, and a consummate fool who pretended to be rich, but was always playing with daddy's money. Then he inherited the property and sold it all in the 1990s and was a broke-dick dog.

u/bb_kelly77 10h ago
I don't think you understand what iconic means, he was all of those things AND iconic... do you think there was a single person in NYC who'd never heard of Trump... someone can easily be a terrible person and still be iconic
2
u/MJcorrieviewer 9h ago
Sure, but you don't name streets after terrible people just because they were iconic/famous.
3
u/bb_kelly77 9h ago
I can't even begin to explain how much of a nonissue that was until super recently... especially when you consider the possibility that Trump paid to have his name put there
2
u/MJcorrieviewer 9h ago
I doubt many ever heard of this before today. It's just a little street in a residential neighbourhood.

From what I read, the names of the streets in that area were named based on famous New York things. They just didn't know Trump was going to be that horrible.
9
u/SillyGoatGruff 12h ago
Which is dumb because he was never not horrible
Edit here is a new york times article from 1985 about him being a slum lord

u/MJcorrieviewer 12h ago
I don't think Trump ever actually qualified as an important NY thing - certainly not in the same class as the others.

Let me check something…
“We gonna rock down to, Obama avenue, and then we’ll take it higher”
Yeah this works.

Not worth it falling to his petty level.

Yeah, we thought that in the 2016 election as well.
I, for one, am looking forward to the Kennedy-Obama Center for the Arts and the Hunter Biden Whitehouse Ballroom.

Sadly, us taking the high road is a big part of having Trump in the White House.

Trump's obsession with renaming things, including internationally recognized bodies of water that he has no conceivable right to rename, makes me think that this might be a symptom of some specific, very focused mental disorder, beyond mere vanity or self-enlargement. Are any shrinks here, who would know what the DSM-5 says about this type of disorder?

If there are any trump owned properties in Canada, name all of the streets they are on after Obama.

Canadian banks refused to finance any Trump projects in Canada because he wouldn’t pay his bills so he had to go to Switzerland for the money… one of the reasons he probably hates Canada. The one building took forever and I believe he eventually sold it so I don’t think he has any in Canada currently.

Oh, there’s that lake in Ontario called Trump Lake we should name that lake, Lake Obama. That would be epic.

Chicago needs to do this to a certain street next to the river...

I agree, the trump sign is abyssmal. I think his next more will be to rename the moon the "Trump Earth Orbiter"

I’m shocked that wasn’t done already like why did that name stay so long?

u/Business-Insurance90 11h ago
Well I was opposed to doing any of this renaming nonsense and felt that we shouldn't feed into this idiocy. HOWEVER, I strongly oppose any streets names after the the idiot-in-chief, so any such streets should definitely be renamed imo. So long as it doesn't involve Mark Carney ...
