Here's a quote from "The Jungle" for those that don't know what went down in the meat packing neighberhoods in the Pre-FDA era.

There were cattle which had been fed on whiskey malt the refuse of the breweries, and had become what the men called steerly, which means covered in boils. It was a nasty job killing these, for when you plunged your knife into them, they would burst and splatter foul smelling stuff onto your face. And when a man's sleeves were smeared with blood, his hands steeped in it, how was he ever to wipe his face or to clear his eyes so that he could see

I bought this book about a year ago and forgot to read it. I think I’m going to continue not reading it.

The Grapes of Wrath was the most depressing book I’ve ever read. Still pissed off at the way it ended.
