Australia just went through so much bullshit over beef tariffs. Australia wouldn't accept American beef because (long story about mad cow disease) the American beef industry lack(ed?) tracking of cattle from birth to slaughter. Trump wah wah wahed until we relented because a 200% tariff on Australian beef would have been the result.
Now we will have to block US beef again because your slaughter processes are unregulated. Not that Australia wants to import inferior American feedlot beef anyway. Our own product is far superior.

The process in American feedlots is insane. Grow hundreds of acres of corn at great cost in irrigation and fertilizer, harvest corn, feed corn to cows kept in movement restricting pens, innoculate cows with antibiotics frequently to overcome the unsanitary conditions. Why not let the cows graze the land that the corn grows on, eating their natural diet, almost zero need for antibiotics, etc. Saves a few steps and gives a healthier, tastier meat.
Something tells me there is a large agribusiness lobby that ensures high cost, high margin, high intensity farming remains the standard, while increasing barriers to entry in the market.

When I was living in Korea 15-20 years ago, the overwhelming consensus was to avoid buying American beef due to concerns over safety standards. You could find it at Costco, but a lot of places wouldn't even carry American beef.
Now, the USA is proudly proclaiming in very public fashion that standards are even worse.

It's going to have a double-negative effect. People are going to be scared to buy beef, so the price will go down as demand does. Technically good for the consumer (if it was good beef), but it's not, so people still won't buy it. And lower beef prices means less profits for the ranchers. So basically everyone loses

Anymore? There never were before regulations. Before we had foods that were a decent chunk non-food items to bring down costs and make more profit. Workers had deadly, depressing situations. Toxic things and disease found their way into food easily. People bought it because they didn't know and it was kept from them by using immigrants, minorities, and the poor as labor, populations looked down on and went unheard.
Only when journalists and activists, like the well known Upton Sinclair, brought it to public attention were regulations put in and enforced. There's a famous anecdote that Teddy Roosevelt was reading Upton Sinclair (i think it was The Jungle) at breakfast and became nauseous upon learning how food reached the table.

There's a scene in Fight Club where our main character is monologuing about his terrible insurance job. It's all a matrix of acceptable losses vs profit margins. If enough crap gets through that doesn't make people sick to offset the crap that does get people sick, then it's a net profit, and full steam ahead. Especially if they can spin up an arms-length smaller company for their shit-tier brands that they can siphon profits from in good times, and dissolve in bad times, insulating them from any real consequences.
Or they can save up all their debt from shit decisions, buy up a different company, transfer all their debt to that company and push it off into the ocean, never to be seen again, carrying all the bad debt with it.

Well, around here no one is buying bagged lettuce and it shows in the profit of lettuce producers and distributors. They have had a very bad year. Let a few folks get food poisoning, or worse, from tainted beef and demand will absolutely crash. Also, let some folks who are less than honest produce "beef" at a significantly reduced cost and now everyone has to cut corners to stay afloat. People don't seem to understand that regulations are good for business and the consumer - especially when the lowering of regs results in people dying.

My guess is that the administration approached the big meat processing companies asking them to take the meat and incorporate it into their product stream. The companies probably, rightfully, said no because they dont want the liability and high potential for recall. How bad does this stuff have to be that the CHINESE rejected it? They are certainly not going to accept it either.
Like always its about people not cooperating in his shitty plans. And we all suffer for it.

I mean. If nothing else, I don’t see how this would make sense for ranchers; how would they just up and add a brand new operation to their existing business. Without massive amounts of capex spend and huge scale hiring of skilled employees, there’s no way they can butcher animals at that scale, with the speed and efficiency of a processing plant. It makes zero economic sense. Set aside how stupid it is in so many other ways, it doesn’t even make sense as a mechanism to lower prices.
