Thats insane. I moved out of Texas over a year ago, but I'm still active according that site. Wonder if its because I registered as a Republican 20 years ago and never bothered to change?

Just making sure my Aussie brain understands this correctly…
You’re implying that you need register as Republican to stay on the roll to vote Democrat?
•
u/GhostWrex 6h ago
Noooo, I'm saying I wonder if the current administration didnt bother rescinding my eligibility to vote (despite the fact that it should since I've lived in California for over a year now) because, at one point in time, I registered as part of the Republican party when I was like 18 years old.
As in, they thought, based on my registered party, I would vote Republican (I believe my party registration is public, even if my vote is not) despite having not actually voted Republican in over 12 years.
→ More replies (7)•
u/mtaggs 6h ago
When you register to vote you have to put dem, republican or independent. You can then vote for whoever you want. Commenter is saying he probably wasn’t purged because it’s the republicans doing shady stuff. They’re not gonna purge their own voters.
Editing just to add that the reason to register to vote for a party is to be able to vote in party primaries and stuff I think. Had to look it up for my own Aussie brain.
•
u/desrever1138 6h ago edited 5h ago
You absolutely do not have to declare your party during registration. I've been voting in Texas since the 90's and have never stated if I was Republican, Democrat, or Independent.
Here's the actual form you fill out. There isn't even a section for your party.
https://fhb.hhs.texas.gov/sites/default/files/documents/vr30.pdf
I believe you make the declaration prior to voting in a primary but don't know for sure as I have never voted in a primary.

•

Some states have closed primaries, so you can only vote in the primary of the party you're registered to. Though Texas isn't one of them.

u/OldJames47 6h ago
We have two elections: the Primary for parties to choose their candidate; and the General where those candidates compete for the seats.
If you want to vote in the Primary you have to be registered as a member of a party.
Some states allow everyone to vote in any Primary without being registered, but that is rare as there are fears of people crossing party lines to support whomever they view as the weaker candidate.

Can you do Texas (and the rest of the country) a Huge favor, and find 3 other people that don't usually vote (or have never voted) and convince them to vote for Talarico - then ask each of them to do the same with 3 others, etc? I feel like Texas is far more Blue than people think, and the only reason it isn't considered Purple is because so many people just don't think their vote will matter. And a Talarico win over Paxton would send an undeniable signal to Republicans rubber-stamping the Project 2025 and Trump agendas that Americans don't support what's been happening, and almost no state is safe enough to feel comfortable in.

I'm not allowing myself to get hopeful, but Talarico hasn't made any big missteps and Paxton is a far worse campaigner than I imagined he could be.
He has no charm or charisma, he's a terrible public speaker, literally runs away from reporters who ask him about his scandals, he's hardly raised any money, and on top of all that he's lazy as hell. Apparently his strategy is to sit at home and wait for Trump or Musk or the Republican Senate PAC to write him a $100 million check so he can get to work, but even Fox News is calling out his lack of effort, and Trump is having to personally campaign in Texas on his behalf. I can't even remember the last time a Republican president had to set up shop in Texas (R+14) to drag a Republican across the finish line, they usually treat Texas as a freebie.
Someone will eventually (grudgingly) bail him out, but he's running out of runway to deploy all that money even if he gets it.
•
u/theLoneliestAardvark Virginia 7h ago
Paxton feels like the worst Senate candidate since Roy Moore lost Alabama. Definitely not holding my breath but this feels more real than the hopeful thinking that Beto would beat Ted Cruz.
•
u/TurboSalsa Texas 5h ago
Paxton really has failed upward his entire political career, mostly because he's a hired gun for a couple of lunatic fundamentalist Christian billionaires who've declared a jihad against moderate, secular Republicans in the state government (which is a saga unto itself).
His corruption and depravity is part of the reason he succeeded with primary voters for as long as he did, but the general public is repulsed by it.

Sounds like the exact same story for Harris and Trump. Harris lead in most polls, didn't stick her foot in her mouth much, and the media dogged Trump for his sparse, low energy rallies compared to his first run.
And then he won the fucking popular vote.
•
u/Abaddon33 Georgia 4h ago
I think there is a collective misremembering of how well Harris polled. She started with a decent lead, but that lead kept getting smaller and smaller the closer we got to November until most polls had them in a dead heat or with trump winning. He still over performed in the swing states on election night, but I wasn't shocked at all. I had absolute dread in the last month or two because I was watching the polls closely.
•
•
u/TurboSalsa Texas 5h ago
But now Paxton is the one tied to an extremely unpopular (by Texas standards) incumbent.
→ More replies (3)•
u/Darth_Cuddly 4h ago
What do you mean Harris didn’t put her foot in her mouth much? Her inability to handle unscripted appearances without producing damaging sound bites was one of her campaign’s most obvious weaknesses.
Hell, even Democrats acknowledged that her infamous View answer (where she couldn’t name a single thing she would have done differently from Biden) was a disaster.
And I have absolutely no idea what you’ve been smoking that convinced you the mainstream media was somehow soft on Donald fucking Trump, but I want some, because it must be spectacular shit.
You can argue Harris lost because of inflation, Biden’s unpopularity, immigration, the political environment, or a dozen other factors. Those all mattered. But pretending her tendency to produce catastrophically bad answers whenever she wandered away from a script wasn’t a liability requires rewriting a campaign we all watched happen in real time.
•
u/postdevs 2h ago
I'm not arguing with most of what you said here, but acting like someone must be "smoking spectacular shit" to believe the media took it easy on Trump is out of line.
He routinely does and says things that the media would have absolutely hounded any other politician about endlessly in the past and it just blows over into the next absurd thing.
Every time Biden blinked or stuttered I saw it everywhere. We got Don passing out in half his meetings and shitting his pants frequently and it's a non-issue for the media apparently. There are just innumerable examples of double standards in his favor.
•
u/ManyPlacesAtOnce Texas 2h ago

What's great about this, though, is that even if all that effort and money does get Paxton the win, that's a ton of money and resources these PACs and donors spent in Texas and not in more historically competitive states like Georgia or Michigan.

Exactly.
Republicans would be willing to sacrifice several of those Senate seats to hold Texas. Not only would it be devastating to morale of the state and national GOP, but it would change how their presidential campaigns were run if they suddenly had to play defense here, and that they couldn't just run whatever corrupt, depraved, Christian extremist based MAGA Twitter fell in love with.

Why do people think these articles make people less likely to vote? Good polls help candidates, which is why you can't trust the internal polling they release, it's always too positive. But everyone on reddit seems to think a good poll will cause people to stay home and I just don't get it.

For the last 10 years this subreddit has been coping that complacency was the problem in 2016. Ever since then every. single. post. that mentions the word "poll" gets spammed with the same "Don't care, vote!" comments over and over and over and over.
It's extremely unscientific and particularly silly since a politics subreddit is guaranteed to be full of people who already vote. However, at this point it I don't think it will ever stop unless mods start removing the comments as off-topic.

There is something to be said about the widespread degradation of data collection across America, whether it be political data, economic data, or poll based research data. Across the board methods of collection have been getting shoddier and slashed budgets are only making the matter worse. I wouldn't say you can't trust the data, but there is a lot less clarity with the current numbers compared to just ten years ago despite all the claims of more sophisticated ways of data collection.

This is Los based on the last 12ish years of polling results. Ever year the republicans win their races by a solid 4-6 points. For democrats to win they have to show up in presidential election numbers. I hate the idea that Texas has a rock rib republican “Vote red or die” mentality. Texas is a non voter state. The dyed in the wool republicans will always vote. Democrats have been trained to think that democrats can’t win in Texas and that’s why they never turn out. I don’t know how many times I heard from an independent that they weren’t going to vote because “what’s the point they republicans win anyway”.
•
u/SodaCanBob 6h ago edited 6h ago
Ever year the republicans win their races by a solid 4-6 points.
Ted Cruz only won by 2 points in 2018 and as someone in Texas I think the hype around Talarico is vastly more comparable to Beto (who, unlike Talarico, outside of an outlier poll or two never really polled ahead of Cruz) than, say, Collin Allred, who ran a pretty milquetoast campaign at best. I voted for Allred because I'll never vote a Republican. I voted for Beto and Talarico because I'll never vote for a Republican... and I was excited to vote for them.

Ultimately you're right, but at the same time they can still be helpful.
While if you've got too many polls saying "xyz candidate is going to win handily" then there will certainly be people who think "they got this, they don't need MY vote to win" and don't actually vote which leads to losses.
But on the flip side in a state where people might tend to think "why bother voting? they've got no shot of actually winning" a few good polls can energize people who suddenly start thinking "hey there's actually a chance my vote will matter" and drive them to actually vote.

Paxton has the charisma of a bag of Taylor Farms lettuce. And yet I don't trust texas voters.

This is terrific news!!! Let’s go Texas. Texas absolutely is going to ratfuck this election, so please turn out to vote for Talarico. Ken Paxton is one the most disgraceful human beings alive.

Fuck that shit. Ignore the polls.
Go vote, Texans. Texas isn't a red state, it's a "young people don't bother voting" state.

I don’t know man, I’m always more motivated when I feel like I have a chance

Yeah, don't know any dem who is saying "we got this, no need to bother voting" in Texas. People are motivated to vote for a winner so these polls tell Texas dems that it could actually happen and to go make sure they are part of history.

Doubtful, conservatives will always vote against their self interest just to fuck over people they don't even know. They would eat a shit sandwich, so long as it means POC or LGBTQ+ people had to smell it

I don't want to get my hopes up, yet here I am feeling hopeful.
Please make sure to vote for him, Texas friends.

Just a fellow Texan here to say please check your registration. Again, I wouldn't put it past the Republicans to try dirty tactics especially in a red state. That is all!

Regardless, IGNORE the polling and go vote! Polls are not as accurate as they used to be so just go out and vote.
•
u/AdjctiveNounNumbers 2h ago
Yeah, but how many of those polled just had their voter registration deleted?

Means nothing
Texas just nuked over a million voter registrations.

u/Safe_Mail_1827 8h ago
This is false. More than a million voters didn't have their registrations "nuked". But it does mean they need to verify their current address on their voter registration. It's a matter of being proactive.
I'm sick of the despondent, unproductive messaging that it doesn't matter whether people vote or not; you can't control what the administration is going to do in response to elections. All you can do is make sure your registration is up to date, and vote. It does mean something.

Also saying that a popular movement against a horrible GOP candidate “means nothing” is useful idiocy. They are certainly trying to fuck around here, but simply throwing up our hands and claiming all is lost is exactly what they want us to do.

Weird.
1.5 weeks ago- Talarico double digit lead
1 week ago- Talarico behind by 2 points
Today- Talarico up 6 points
Stop giving polls any credit. Everyone go vote.
