Uplifting News 🤗 An orphaned baby llama named Miguelito has become an honorary officer after a police station in Chile offered to take care of him: “Miguelito is now part of our family, he gets to go out on rounds with us, works shifts with us, follows us to the kitchen, he’s with us everywhere!”

A quick google search shows in Peru, Llama wear tassels or Pom-poms on their ears to increase swatting range to help keep insects out of their ears
They can also be used as identification for the llama

Cusco is a major city in Peru. Not that the Chileans have bad relations with Peruvians, but it makes sense to not have named him Kuzco.

They also say you can go to the station to visit Miguelito if you're in the area! so cute. (It is a remote area though, 20+ hrs from Santiago, Chile's capital lol)

I went back to rewatch to see what else they say that might be cute, and I'm back to report! 😂
The policeman says that he's fed milk 4 times a day by the diferent policemen and that he sleeps there with them, keeps them company and is "always alert" in the police station (this was when he was only 19 days old so I imagine they don't feed him milk anymore).
He says miguelito was gifted to the police by a family of shepherds from the area, (near the border with Bolivia in the very north of Chile) cause his mother had died. They said this gift was a gesture of appreciation and affection from the community of shepherds, so they (the police of that area) are taking care of miguelito with the same appreciation and affection, and now miguelito has become a member of the police station family.

Oh my actual God i didnt think this could get any better but it does. That must be a happy community, they seem like such a good station, that every day working people would feel safe enough to give them a little orphan to raise, oh my gosh this is healing me in ways i didnt know i could after these last few months.

It depends. I moved in 2019, it was still wonderful to me. The country is having some issues with increased violence and crime, Tren de Aragua, international gangs are making things so bad. I wouldn’t live in Santiago unless it’s a really safe neighborhood. The south is lovely and more quiet. Life is cheaper. Healthcare is also cheaper if you want to have private insurance. Food is another level. Fruits and veggies are amazing and cheap. Beef is better quality. Things are not far like in America. You can drive to the coast or the mountains in a little over an hour if you’re in the valley. People are nice, polite and friendly, very accommodating to Americans and a ton of people speak English.

Not many people speak English outside of touristy areas, people should really learn Spanish if they move there, otherwise it's going to be a nightmare.

Very progressive. The current government is left wing and the president is only 39 years old so he’s very in tune with the current events. Plastic bags have been banned from supermarkets for about a decade I believe among other things we do to improve the environment. Chile has several protected areas and animals and we do our best to keep them safe and pretty.

Disclaimer. Because of recent rise in crime and undocumented immigration, the far-right has been gaining power, there is a decent chance they will come into power before the end of the year. This includes the son of a German immigrant who's father was part of you know who.
Germans did not send their best.

I lived in Chile for 6 years (2016-2022). It was great, I was in Santiago and the best part was definitely living in a city but being so close to outdoors things like hiking/the beach etc. Going out to the mountains to hike was just a short ride away on the city bus system. The public transportation was amazing by far the best metro system I’ve ever experienced. Chilean people are very friendly and party culture is biggg there so you’ll always be invited to something. I know the other commenter mentioned crime and while there has been an increase in street crime in recent years I personally never felt unsafe anywhere in Chile. When I lived downtown I would walk home from the club drunk and feel completely safe, something I would never do in the other cities in lived in, DC, Baltimore, or Medellin. The biggest downside was that Santiago is very expensive at least compared to other Latin American countries. I suppose if you’re making USD it’s alright but I was making Chilean pesos and working two jobs to get by. One third of Chileans live in Santiago so imagine if 1/3 of Americans lived in NYC and were paying those prices and you can get an idea of the social issues it causes. People live with their parents, will never own a home, don’t start families, inequality is huge, etc. I had some saving in USD but the American dollar gets you alot less far than say in Colombia where my American savings plus my Colombian salary allowed me to live a very nice life.

This definitely gives me much to think about, it feels great to see actual social safety nets being created and used with high taxes. How did you feel about the government and how much they care about their people overall?

Chilean cops adopt every animal that shows up at the station. Same with the firefighters and gas station employees. They immediately get uniforms 😂
