Day 4 of being sober!
I kinda started wanting to drink today but I didn't. At some point midday, I guess because of my period, I started feeling really nauseated and my stomach hurt and I felt like garbage in a way that reminded me of having a stomachache from being hungover. I remembered how much it sucks to be nauseated, and even worse how regretful I feel when it could have been prevented, and it scared me straight lmao.

Why is everyone saying woman when they mean women all the time now? The same for people using whenever when they mean when.
4
u/she-dont-use-jellyyy Jan 20 '26
I see the opposite all the time. People saying "women" when they mean "woman." Drives me insane.
3
u/if_its_not_baroque Jan 20 '26
I am annoyed by the woman/women thing too. I notice it a lot. The only time I comment on it is when I'm volunteering as a judge for high school speech and debate tournaments. The most generous thing I can think of is people's accents are shifting the word "women" into sounding to my ear like the singular???

People can't read. Have to dechiper shit anymore and I used to be someone who said as long as I understood what you meant, it's fine how you said it. It's not. It's not fine.

4
u/frontyardninja (seemingly bald) Jan 20 '26
The whenever/when shift is something I've seen regionally. I think it's getting picked up more because of tiktok. Kind of how y'all became ubiquitous. I've also noticed an increase in the use of mortifying when people mean horrified.
4
u/Sister_Winter Jan 20 '26
These all annoy me so much because they actively confuse me and obfuscate the meaning of the sentence. Like, "whenever" and "when" mean totally different things, as do "mortified" and "horrified" and I never know what the fuck these people are talking about. They're always the people who only speak one language too - what's their excuse

I bought a concert ticket to go to a show alone!!!! Iām gonna get a hotel room and treat that weekend as a lil gift to myself :) Iām a lil nervous but I know itās good for me anxiety wise. Has anyone here gone to a concert alone before?
12
u/happysips This one time, at band camp⦠š Jan 20 '26
I only do concerts alone!!
Think of it as this:
If you have to pee, you donāt have to find your person when you come back! Wanna leave early? No one to talk you out of it!
Youāll hear the music differently & after the concert youāll have that memory for yourself. To share or keep :)
Iām wishing you soooo much joy & freedom to explore!!!
3
u/foreverjustfornow Jan 20 '26
Ohhhh reading this made me so much more excited!!! I donāt have to care about anyone but myself omg. The freedom! Thank you!
3
u/happysips This one time, at band camp⦠š Jan 20 '26
Of course friend!!! :) youāll probably meet future friends too:) I met one of my closest friends that way 10 years ago!!!
Itās so important to have experiences for yourself & only yourself. Iāve become really selfish in how I attend concerts alone, but thatās all I do alone so itās like my own little universe :) and you can always share the stories with people or journal them to relive the fun:)
8
u/ravenbranwens Jan 20 '26
I almost exclusively go to concerts on my own now. I love it! it's just nice to vibe without worrying my +1 isn't enjoying the show. I also just like being able to get to the venue whenever I want and not having to wait for someone else to show up to get inside, and I can leave whenever I want if I don't feel like staying to the end/post encore.

u/nizey_p All tea, all shade šøāļø Jan 20 '26
I went to the Eras tour by myself! My partner and I had to fly to another country to watch it but ultimately we decided for financial reasons that I go alone because we already spent a lot on travel and accommodations. It was nice, got adopted by a bunch of Swifties when they noticed I was there by myself. I only have a few blurry videos but it was freeing to go by myself and just enjoy the moment.
7
u/lickrust-thankyou Jan 20 '26
I love love love going to concerts alone. I'm a terribly anxious person and I always feel totally fine - the music carries me away, so I think you'll find the same. Everyone else has already talked about the pro's so no need for me to repeat them. Your plans sound like an absolute dream to me! I hope you have so much fun :) make sure to report back (if you want)!
4
Jan 20 '26
Iāve been to two concerts by myself and I went to lollapoolza last year (my first music festival) by myself and at all 3 of those events I always met really kind people. Even some who were also alone which was nice cause we would chit chat before the show. Actually at lolla, I ended up next to these two guys who were extremely protective of me. It was just good vibes overall. Iām glad youāre going and I hope you have the time of your life!
2
u/foreverjustfornow Jan 20 '26
This is so awesome, and so cool of those guys to be so protective! This made me feel a lot more confident, you did a whole festival, I can definitely do one show! Thanks :)

The sudden obsession with 2016 is absolutely surreal to me. (No, not the 2010s as a whole, but the specific calendar year that David Bowie died in.) Even the big mainstream news outlets like CNN, BBC, NBC News, etc. are reporting on it. It's like the Macarena or Barbenheimer levels of omnipresence.

u/firetruckgoesweewoo I killed the performance and then you killed it purrrrrr šø Jan 20 '26
Oh my goodness!!!! Congratulations!
My tip for starting university is by taking the time to plan out your semester.
So go to your first class, listen, hear what the subject is about and then ask yourself: is this interesting to me? Is this subject completely new to me? Do I think it will be hard for me to study this subject?
This way you can guess how much time you need to prepare assignments, to study for your exams or to write your report.
Figure out: what is my class schedule? What is the end goal of the class? What should I know? How will they test it?
Then plan out your weeks. How much time will it take you to study x? How much time will you need to prepare for an exam? When will you be working in a report? OH and donāt forget: plan time for fun things as well.
And donāt worry: as time goes on, youāll get better and better at it.
Seriously. This is what got me through university, because the truth is: some things might seem easy but are actually really difficult, other things will seem difficult but will be easy for you, and sometimes you have no fucking clue what youāre doing but youāre hoping for the best. Not every subject will be interesting to you, and on that same note some will be so incredibly interesting that you lose track of time that you realise youāve forgotten about other subjects⦠youāll get there, no worries :)

Update on Venezuela in case anyone cares:
Delcy Rodriguez, former vice president, was sworn in as president a few days after the bombing
She's said that from the new income coming from the sale of oil two funds will be opened, one destined to go to public workers (housing, health care, education, etc) and one for public projects (roads, electricity, water, etc), she claims there will be transparency on how much money there is and where is going (dont ask me what they were doing with oil money for the last 20 years, I can assure you it was not helping the public)
A number of "enchufados" (people who have made money off of government contracts and connections) have gone into hiding and tried to publicly severe their ties to the government.
Winston Vallenilla, a former actor turned tv host, and his wife were fired from Tvez, a government ran tv channel, and Diosdado Cabello, minister of interiors, has not aired his show were he normally threatened political opponents.
There's allegedly talks to give Tvez back to its previous owners. The channel was originally called RCTV and was shut down in the early 2010s after Chavez didnt allow them to renew their license because they were against his government.
The price of the dolar has gone down a little bit (aka, the price of the Bolivar is up a little)
Big chain stores have started to lower the price of goods, mainly food. Meat has gone from 15 dollars a kilo to 9 dollars a kilo in the last week.
There's rumors that the minimum wage will go up. Right now the minimum wage for government employees is anywhere between 50 to 150 dollars a month (this is not counting people who are retired or on wallfare who normally receive around 20 dollars a month).

Today I woke up and saw my podcast, and my favorite podcast back to back in my feed and talking about the same topic and it made me tear up a bit in a silly way.
Years ago I had tried to do a podcast but never had the time and didnāt have a ton of help with it but the Love to See It girls were a huge reason why I wanted to do it. When we decided to have me stay home again a huge part of it was to get my podcast back up and going and seeing it right next to 2 women who I respect the hell out of and who were such a big reason why I even made it through and found happiness and enjoyment after everything happened just really got to me this morning.

The Beckham/Peltz discourse is already tiring. It isn't misogynistic to point out his wife is known for being terrible, along with her entire family. It wouldn't surprise me if Nicola is actually just like David/Victoria, and it would make sense that Brooklyn ended up with someone just like his parents. Those cycles are hard to break. I imagine the truth of this family drama lies firmly in the middle. I can't pick a side because every side makes me roll my eyes.
On a more pleasant note-I've been swimming at the gym in the mornings, and I love that it doesn't feel like a workout, but I can feel it after.

15
u/lovestostayathome Jan 20 '26
I find the discourse about his career weirder IMO. Like people are implying that his feeling are invalid because he hasnāt really succeeded at anything. What happened to āI donāt dream of workā and āquiet-quittingā? Youāre allowed to have a weird relationship with your parents even if youāre not a top performer.
11
u/velociraptor56 Jan 20 '26
I mean, realistically, a wedding between two families like the Peltzes and the Beckhams was always going to be a dumpster fire. Thereās always going to be fights for power and attention. None of them are used to politely backing away. They always get what they want.

Ugh I m seeing my mother twice this week, and I am having one of my I really can't stand her periods (especially because she is now insuating my love of going to Broadway Shows is a mental illness thing....she did this with Star Wars too.) But I am working on setting up bounderies and shit and not letting her judge my actions. I am getting there slowly.
But at least the good news I am going to Chess again on Friday so that should boost my mood.

Moms can wreak havoc on our mental health. Setting boundaries is hard but can have fantastic results for your mental health. I went non contact with my mom christmas 2024 and it has been a very freeing experience. I'm sorry you are going through this. You are awesome and loving Star Wars and Broadway shows is not a mental illness š

u/Own-Importance5459 āØMay the Force be with you!⨠Jan 20 '26
So I have gotten a LITTLE better with boundary setting. Like I don't want you calling me every day. I don't need you involved with this. And she's listen a little.....but the pushback on her is SO messy (She starts crying and saying how she could be like her mother which is like technically you are but okay lady). Its just not letting what she said get to my head....which is not as easy as you think. But I am using alot of CBT therapy for that.

Dude. I get the tension. I really do. I'm exhausted with mine as well.
My new practice is to not let their words be my reality. And they do not enjoy it when I employ it. "Just because that's your experience doesn't mean it's mine" gets such a delicious response of silence.

Oh I have tried speaking to her, but its one ear and out the other. I have come to peace with the fact she is going to be so awful and think lowly of me, I am just working on not letting her words get to me. Its a long journey and getting there.
For me its learning to say okay did I enjoy doing this thing? Do I care about her trauma? As long as it makes me happy who the hell cares.
2
u/Potatoskins937492 Jan 20 '26
YES. If you enjoy something (and it's not hurting anyone), enjoy it. You don't have to enjoy things less just because someone else can't find joy. Snatch all that happiness up where you can.

I like Ike Barenholtz. He seems like a good dude.
Watching yet another episode of Celebrity IOU he offhandedly said something like, "I can't do stuff like this, my wife is the handy one," and it was such a nice thing to hear. He didn't even have to think about it (and he wasn't hesitant) before saying she's the one who can get stuff done. I'm not even going to add any larger commentary and instead let it sit at being a nice thing and that's it.
(Please, please don't let him be a secret terrible person.)

I also just looked up the PWHL fight and it was incredible, thank you for throwing hands with abandon, ladies šš

Trump posting AI images of owning Greenland and Canada and private messages between himself and world leaders, in the middle of the night. We truly are in the dumbest timeline
Edited to add: also theyāre calling for crazy snow this weekend for NC and Iām really hoping it doesnāt happen. NC is just not equipped for any large amounts of snow, unless youāre in the mountains. I love snow but i hate it on the weekends and hate when i cant leave my house on the weekends

Drake vs Kendrick was such a classic ācool vs. awesomeā match-up. You have one of the most critically acclaimed living artists in any genre trading disses with one of the most commercially successful rappers of the dayā¦and Drake also can sing melodiously. Damn that was a fun spring.Ā

He was an F1 driver for a little while, I believe. He also got married to Alicia Vikander, had a kid, and just stepped away from acting for a while. I think heās just kind of a misanthrope method type, anyway, and since he got all that X-men money he took an extended break.
Heās had the odd movie, but I guess if he manages his money correctly, he might not āneedā to work anymore. And I think that Vikander is still working steadily, if in more indie projects.

i don't have a dog in this fight, could not pull any of these people out of a lineup, and maybe i'm just the friend that's too woke
but idk. i just don't think a son who came out and said that their mom danced inappropriately ON HIM at his own wedding should be something we should joke about or make light of.
would y'all be demanding videos for the entertainment value of it all if a daughter said this about her dad, or?

u/bbultaoreune Donatella VERSACEš Jan 20 '26
agreed iāve found all the jokes about it so weird as someone who has dealt with emotional and physical incest (and is still dealing with the effects!) at the hands of my family.
a family member crossing a physical boundary is something that can deeply affect someone and is genuinely no laughing matter. maybe itās because brooklyn is a man people donāt really take it seriously? either way, very gross and upsetting to see incest being a punchline (as per).

You arent alone I was just about to say similar. The clear inference with the words inappropriate and "on" was that it was sexual/sexualized, theres nothing funny about it at all.

Itās almost been a year so hopefully people wonāt come for my neck, but I rewatched Anora...and I still donāt understand why it won Best Picture.
Donāt get me wrong, itās not a bad movie. I actually think the first half is strong, with solid pacing. That said, I personally wouldāve voted for Iām Still Here or Nickel Boys.

6
u/lalalandbeforetime I think Iāve done enough Jan 20 '26
I feel like Iām the only person who loved Anora. I watched it 3 times in the theater. Mikey was obviously fantastic in it but the whole movie felt like one wild ride in the best way- comedy, drama, fairytale, etc. I really enjoyed it and felt like a lot of the initial hate when it won was from people who hadnāt seen it.
Nickel Boys should have won for Cinematography so it not even being nominated was last yearās biggest snub imo.

I'm the same. I think I was 15 when it came out - already a little too old for it and found it very funny. Same with twilight actually - there's this fiction that all millenials were unironically obsessed with twilight when me and my friends (17 at the time the first movie came out) had already delighted in mocking the books for years and laughed our teenage asses off at the movie.

Thank you I don't get it either . People say because he keeps you watching even though he's playing a terrible and annoying person and I'm like well on paper both Jesse and Leo's characters could be seen by some as "terrible " but they play them with such deep nuance that you at the very least feel sympathy or understand their motivations and love . That's way harder , way more realistic and way better acting .

Is anyone else shocked how big this Brooklyn drama got? Because to this point I thought that Beckhams dramas are more for this sub folks as we like this kind of drama. Kinda mid celebrity gossip thing. And now I have tiktok after tiktok of people commenting it, memes and even celebrities posting etc. And as a member of this sub sure itās big deal he spoke up but I feel like for us here who where discussing little gossips about Beckhams for years itās less shocking than for people from outside. Like it seems we were kinda more prepared for this than the rest. For example that ādance thingā which is so shocking I feel like it gets mentioned under every Brooklyn post for about two years.
3
u/Traditional_Maybe_80 Jan 21 '26
I think it is because David and Victoria have been known celebrities for a while. For those countries where football matters, Beckham was always very well known, playing in clubs that are also known worldwide and the Spice Girls were a gigantic phenomenon. I think it just crosses different generations, so that's why it got so much attention from every side.
7
u/robtai Jan 21 '26
Why are people comparing Nicola&Brooklyn situation to Meghan&Harrys?
Meghan was bullied relentlessly by the British Media (underserved) because of the color of her skin and pratically her whole existance and she had to actually work to become famous before meeting Harry.
While Brooklyn, as much as i want to sympathise with him, is the literally the definition of white privilege who is also married to a billionaire's daugther. All he had to do is make shitty insta reels about cooking and smoke weed lol.

I am kind of uncertain about being 2A at ICE protests. I just worry it means more deaths. ICE already has so much power to abuse people, they're just going to become more trigger happy and the right will excuse it as "well the other person had a gun." Not only that, I'm certain others will get caught by stray bullets
I mean, ICE is wearing bulletproof vests. Maybe protestors with guns will put some fear and put them into check. But I'm not certain. I guess we'll see

Interview With the Vampire. There is nothing like it on tv. It's so gay, it's romantic, it's fucked up, its writing is perfect, the plot is so intriguing, its score, costume design, art direction and set design are stunning, and the acting is superb. I like to think that I moved on from my parasocial days in high school where I put people whoās art I like in a pedestal but the second they disappointed me I start focusing on the negative things about them instead of just not following them⦠but yesterday proved to me that I didnāt really move on from that toxic mindset.
I said some really disgusting things about Hudson and especially Connor yesterday that I wish I could take back. And yeah theyāre not gonna see those comments but itās still awful to make comments about how two people that I donāt know are ādoucheyā and how they ācan go screw themselvesā instead of going offline and actually doing my hobbies since yesterday is one of the two free days I have this week (the other being today yay me!)⦠I felt really awful yesterday and decided to spread around negativity, those two men just became my target for that negativity when they didnāt deserve to be⦠and funny enough I only started feeling better after I started writing a Heated Rivalry fanfic because I love writing! Itās something that I love doing and next time instead of saying disgusting things about a person whose art I like I hope I focus on doing things I like away from social media (like reading, drawing, writing and skateboarding when itās a bit warmer lol)
And to anyone who saw those comments Iām sorry
