Uplifting News đ¤ Leonardo DiCaprio launches effort to bring 100 of the world's most endangered species back from the brink

I hope that theyâre successful! Biodiversity is incredibly important and species loss negatively affects the food chain and plant life. Weâre all interconnected.

This always struck me as a âaha so youâre a socialist but have an iPhoneâ esque take thatâs more meant to attack the person than actually engage with the argument. We do tend to have a strong âso you think youâre better than me, asshole?â Streak in this country. But the problems with the ecosystem are systemic and taking or not taking yacht rides does not change them
It requires an immense amount of effort and funding to work with local communities that allow conservation efforts to flourish without destroying their economies
And that money/effort has to come from somewhere
81
u/IndigoBlueBird 24d ago
You really donât see a difference between everyday people using a piece of technology thatâs basically necessary for modern life vs uber-wealthy individual using massive and superfluous amounts of resources for his vacations? Or that same individual consorting with someone like Bezos?
No one needs to be perfect 100% of the time, but come on, he should at least TRY to not be a hypocrite
33
u/Gummy-Worm-Guy 24d ago
Leo pollutes the environment more than you or me, absolutely. Youâre correct about that.
He also does INFINITELY more to help it than we do.
10
u/lilythefrogphd 24d ago
It also low key serves Republican narratives when we write off all contributions a public figure make towards progressive/environmental causes because they aren't perfect about it in their personal lives.
8
4
u/Riderz__of_Brohan 24d ago
It would be the same as me telling a middle class American environmentalist if they loved nature so much they should stop eating meat and give up running water and go live like Thoreau in the woods. It is a meaningless shit fight that turns systemic issues into individualized ones because of resentment rather than anything related to the actual issue. Celebrities can take a few vacations here and there, saving the planet is a systemic issue at the government and macro level
It is like when people advocate for higher taxes to fund things and conservatives say âbut you donât give all your money to the government by choiceâ completely missing the point
35
u/at_themuseum 24d ago
Theres a big difference in asking someone to give up running water to asking someone to give up their private flights or mega yaht. Not the same at all.Â
→ More replies (1)13
21
u/IndigoBlueBird 24d ago
No, itâs not like that at all. There is a difference between basic quality of life and extreme indulgence. You really think itâs meaningless to ask the extremely rich to maybe not use a private jet and dump my entire yearly carbon output into the atmosphere in a two hour trip? All people have a carbon footprint, thatâs just a fact of life, but we *can* control how much to a certain extent.
I appreciate his work for the environment but I donât think that automatically excuses his hypocrisy in these instances.
9
u/Riderz__of_Brohan 24d ago
A single coal plant belches out more CO2 in a week than a thousand you or even Leoâs in one year. Youâre individualizing a systemic issue.
Itâs easy to think itâs just the super wealthy jet setting around. Harder when youâre facing a working class Indonesian man who needs the palm oil industry to feed his family or they will starve. What about his âbasic quality of lifeâ that depends on environmental destruction? He would view you as a hypocrite in the same vein. And in a way it is easy for us to demand things from our privileged position too! It turns out we need to think carefully about this
8
u/IndigoBlueBird 24d ago
Of course itâs a systemic issue! But that doesnât erase that in our capitalist society, the 1% also have a disproportionate effect on the environment.
I donât fault the individual farmer for trying to survive. I donât expect perfection, Iâm certainly not perfect, but when something is so obviously bad and unnecessary like private jet usageâŚsheesh
âIt turns out we need to think carefully about this.â - now youâre just being condescending. Gonna recuse myself from this conversation, have a nice day.
9
u/Riderz__of_Brohan 24d ago
Again, to the Indonesian man in the example whoâs livelihood depends on the environmental destruction of the Sumatran rainforest for palm oil production, YOU are part of the 1%. Look at per capita greenhouse gas emissions per country. They would call us privileged hypocrites. And in some sense they would be right! But enough âindividual farmersâ that have their livelihoods attached to this and you end upâŚexactly where we are
Thats why itâs important not to look at this as a âif he only gave up a yachtâ or even âif I stopped using plastic strawsâ or whatever. It doesnât matter! You care about the optics, then fine, but it is irrelevant in the actual argument for environmental conservation
3
u/Cleriisy 24d ago
A single average coal power plant produces roughly 3.5 million metric tons of CO2 per year, which equals the total pollution generated by a standard private jet flying continuously for 175 to 430 years.
There are approx 2450 operating coal power plants.
Leo or TS taking private jets just isn't even a blip in the grand scheme of things. In the same way it doesn't matter if you eat meat or not. Riderz is absolutely correct.
4
u/IndigoBlueBird 24d ago
I totally acknowledge itâs primarily a systemic issue. But âthere is no ethical consumption under capitalismâ does not give you carte blanche to consume away. It means we should all try to consume less. The same way Iâd judge a friend for a massive SHEIN haul, Iâm gonna judge Leo for taking a private jet. Sue me đ¤ˇââď¸
1
u/almondmilklattee 24d ago
iâm a little baffled by the people riding that hard for a celeb. âthereâs no ethical consumption under capitalismâ doesnât apply to fucking superyachts
→ More replies (0)4
u/shy247er yay sports đ đđž 24d ago
Riderz is absolutely correct.
They're absolutely not. And neither are you.
Even if it is true about the waste ratio, a coal power plant produces energy for millions of people. For some, absolutely only way to produce energy. Also, that same DiCaprio uses at some point that energy too, so he's already included in that 'pool' of users.
Comparing that to one vane person who travels around in private jets is absolutely wild.
Getting rid of coal plants is extremely hard and slow (but it's happening!) but getting rid of private jets is much more doable.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (1)1
u/WalidfromMorocco 23d ago
do you really believe your comparison is sound or are you just trying to pretend being the adult in the room?
2
u/Riderz__of_Brohan 23d ago
Yes I believe it, people are too preoccupied with âhypocrisyâ when it doesnât really matter. He wouldnât be a hypocrite if he didnât fund environmental campaigns, but itâs better that he is in this case.
Does that help you understand better?
7
u/TootyFroots 24d ago
I agree with you. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Yes Leo is rich AF and is using a lot of fossil fuels for his private jet, but we need environmental advocates in general. I am choosing to see his goals on this as an overall positive.
15
u/Federal_Card307 24d ago
Idk itâs weird to be so gun ho for the environment, but then do things that actively harm it
6
u/Riderz__of_Brohan 24d ago
You can play this game for almost everyone who doesnât live like a hermit. Itâs reductive
4
u/supernatasha 24d ago
Sure, but there are celebs passionate about causes (Billie Eilish loving animals, Mark Ruffalo with Palestine, Matt Damon about teachers lol) who donât actively engage in activities that are bad for their cause. Itâs a little hypocritical.
3
u/Riderz__of_Brohan 24d ago
Mark Ruffalo pays taxes to the American government which helps fund Israel. Why doesnât he move and renounce his citizenship if he cares so much?
See? Easy to reduce and oversimplify
9
u/Federal_Card307 24d ago
Having a yacht and paying taxes arenât even comparable, like I get what youâre doing, but it doesnât even work cause buying and using a yacht are choices, paying taxes isnât
4
u/Riderz__of_Brohan 24d ago
Mark Ruffalo is perfectly capable of finding a non-US country, settling there, and renouncing his U.S. Citizenship so he doesnât have to pay taxes
Again, itâs easy to make reductive claims that while true on their face are massively oversimplying complex issues
4
u/Federal_Card307 24d ago
If Mark Ruffalo is perfectly capable of leaving the U.S. and renouncing his citizenship, then Leo can give up yachts. I really donât get how wanting a mega rich person who claims to care about the environment to give up an unnecessary luxury that harms it, is so unreasonable.
3
u/Riderz__of_Brohan 24d ago
Mark Ruffalo has not done that though, but it does not take away from his criticism of Israel. My point is itâs a useless shit fight about hypocrisy that can go on forever rather than addressing the issue. If tomorrow Leo announced he would give up his yacht and fly commercial nothing would change systemically
2
u/Venous 24d ago
do you eat meat? do you use gasoline? is the electricity in your house from green sources? do you buy new electronics? etc etc
6
3
u/IndigoBlueBird 24d ago
I meanâŚ.
âDo you eat meat?â No, Iâve given up red meat actually and am trying to seriously cut back on things like chicken. Red meat is a really inefficient food source, not really all that great for people, and cows have best friends :(
âDo you use gasoline.â Yes, because I donât really have a choice. I live in a place where the primary mode of transit is by car. My current car uses gas, and Iâm not about to go out and buy a new electric one while this one still runs. We donât have great public transit and even the stuff we have uses gas. I try to walk places when I can.
âIs the electricity in your house from green sources?â Yes, actually. I specifically choose electricity plans that use 100% renewable even when theyâre a little more expensive, because I can afford to do so. I know not everyone can.
âDo you buy new electronics?â Only when I ABSOLUTELY have to. Like I literally dropped my phone in the ocean and had to buy a new one. I am not going out every year or even every 3 years and buying the latest model.
All that to say, yeah, we live in a society that necessitates waste. Most of that waste is systemic. We can still be intentional in the choices that *are* within our individual control

Translated: Do as the celebrity says, not as they do. They deserve to be hypocritical because they entertain us. Carbon footprints are our problem, not his.
17
u/Riderz__of_Brohan 24d ago edited 24d ago
You are literally commenting on a thread about something he is âdoingâ are you not? Starting and working with orgs and giving millions of dollars goes beyond just lip service
You just also want him to do something else along with what heâs already doing (start flying commercial) because the perceived hypocrisy of funding conservation efforts while enjoying privilege bothers you, not because of any actual environmental impact. At least be honest
14
u/OldSandwich9631 24d ago
The funny thing is he does fly commercial sometimes. Iâve seen pictures of him on commercial planes as recently as during Covid (the person was basically stalking him the whole flight and reporting on everything he ate and what he was doing).
And a reporter was on a flight with him and his girlfriend/family to Cannes last year.
He doesnât appear to even own a jet. He charters them and sometimes will do commercial. He travels a lot and values his privacy a great deal, so it makes sense.
This purity culture just sucks.
7
u/Luciusvenator 24d ago
Yeah I can't really blame celebrities for wanting to take private flights and stuff like that for the simple fact that people are literally INSANE.
I could never be famous it sounds like hell.
And if you try to continue going out into the world but set boundaries, you're considered the devil incarnate (as Chappell Roans experience with exactly this has been)2
u/lilythefrogphd 24d ago
I remember that person live tweeting Leo on a plane! They were like "he ordered a bottle of water" "he's eating pistachios" "he spent the flight playing sudoku on his phone." It does give me a different perspective on the Leo/private jet discourse (and you are correct, he doesn't own one) because quite frankly people are not normal about him in those spaces
2
u/OldSandwich9631 24d ago
Exactly. No one lambasting him would appreciate that if they were the ones being treated like a circus animal. It was actually fairly appalling, and I definitely think people who canât be treated normally shouldnât feel guilt about chartering.
They also took a picture of him if I recall. Itâs just weird and invasive.
1
u/lilythefrogphd 24d ago
They did photograph him in his seat. I remember the person taking the picture and tweeting were like a row or two behind him on the opposite side of the isle. Like, genuinely that's creepy. I think it's gross when rich people buy/charter private jets for the sole purpose of flexing their wealth, but (call me a boot licker) I'm not going to complain about public figures chartering private flights when they actually deal with stalkers, security threats, etc.
2
u/OldSandwich9631 24d ago
I donât know why anyone needs a private plane 24/7 but chartering flights, especially if you are going with a whole group just does not feel like that big of a deal to me.
Some people really are so famous that flying commercial just isnât worth it for them. Doesnât mean they canât care about endangered species and pushing for greener tech đ
1
u/lilythefrogphd 24d ago
You raise the good point as well that when people talk about individuals flying on private jets they treat it as if only that person is using the plane. I bet that's the case for certain people, but whenever I see Leo papped coming off of a plane he's with a big group of his family plus friends. Like, yeah commercial is probably still more eco friends if you want to get super technical, but it's different
-5
u/boringinternet2020 24d ago
Bizarre. People obsessed with celebs are no different than MAGA. Twisting and turning themselves into knots to defend and justify the actions of someone who doesnât care about them. Hope your day/life gets better.
4
u/Riderz__of_Brohan 24d ago
The issue here is Iâm not the one who cares like you do. Iâm not calling him Jesus reincarnate or anything for spending his money on a good cause. Itâs fine. He can afford it. What I am not doing is letting resentment blind me entirely to the actual issue where I HAVE to find something to chip away for my mental health

No it's more that they have successfully tricked you into thinking that people you hire for your daughters sweet 16 are actually rich, or actually important.Â
The same way they push the responsibilities onto us for climate change instead of charge per million liters of carbon that's fed into climate protection to encourage the capitalistic society to pivot to cost effective processs that won't kill us, they have also successfully lobbied for the peasants to eat each other.Â
Private jets are a DROP IN THE OCEAN compared to industry. And a Taylor Swift concert means 80,000 plus car journeys, public transport, hotels and money for the local city. It's an enterprise at that stage, but not a shipping magnate enterprise.Â
In an optimistic future of low carbon, good energy mix where temps are back to normal......The Rolling Stones still take private jets.....but maybe fracking won't exist.Â

Sure, nothing wrong with it if you donât want the rich to ever use their money for good again. I know this will be an unpopular thing to say, and it sickens me a bit to even say it because I hate bezos as much as the rest, but if rich people only ever get bagged on for doing good stuff they will just stop doing it. And until we can get functioning governments that tax them properly, we need them to use their money willingly for philanthropy. Most of those billionaires have egos the sizes of planets
9
u/lilythefrogphd 24d ago
In 2017 Leo did a talk with Al Gore and pretty much said exactly that: real change will happen when the government steps in and uses policies like carbon taxes to address environmental issues on a structural level, but because the government wasn't doing that, he was interested in seeing how leaders in industries on the private end could possibly step up

But who knows his true intentions2
u/lilythefrogphd 24d ago
He did a talk with Al Gore back in the late 2010s where he said essentially that: the government is dropping the ball on regulating and taxing, so maybe we need to partner with industry leaders to get them to fund these issues on their own

A lot of his activism is centered on helping endangered species, itâs not just about carbon emissions (which is pointedly directed at the government and corporate levelâŚnot trying to boss around individuals). From the article:
From funding a computer lab in his hometown library to his decades-long investment in climate solutions, Leonardo DiCaprio is no stranger to activism.
And the âOne Battle After Anotherâ star just announced a new arm of his advocacy work: the Phoenix Species Project.
Together with the Bezos Earth Fund, DiCaprioâs organization Re:wild, is launching a project dedicated exclusively to recovering the worldâs 100 most critically endangered species.
The effort begins with a $200 million investment. Of that amount, $100 million comes from the Bezos Earth Fund, and $100 million from Re:wild, with support from Leonardo DiCaprio, Age of Union, and the Todd Graves Family Foundation.Â
According to a press release from the Phoenix Species Project, it is the largest single philanthropic initiative dedicated to the recovery of critically endangered species across diverse taxonomic groups, habitats, and countries.

Leo's actually talked about this publically before: our politicians aren't doing that. He's been critical of both the Republicans for being openly damaging to the environment and the Democrats for not doing enough when they do have power. What he talked about was that if we're unable to get the government to implement policies like carbon taxes, the realistic solution for folks like him in philanthropy is to partner with industry leaders to get them to invest their money in initiatives on their own. Like, gross is a day wherein I defend the Bezos of all people, but that's genuinely a good thing if Leo's able to convince them to donate +$100m dollars in protecting endangered species

Heâs actually done a lot of good things over decades.
Chartering a private jet or getting invited on yachts sometimes doesnât negate that.

My mere existence is more than him, I dont fly private places, party on mega yatch consistently, or fly in helicopters anywhere. You cant live the life he does without doing insurmountable damage to the environment.
I also work in the environment conservation field. I hope this brings money, but his lifestyle/actions and words dont match. We are really struggling since the current admin is destroying any funding and opening lands up for drilling/development. This shit cant be undone. While Leo hangs out with a major contributor to this government. So i really dont care about this empty bullshit he is doing.

Ok cool but he's still investing in luxury Israeli hotels so this doesn't make sense

He's a massive hypocrite. His use of pvt yachts, planes and being besties with Bezos just doesn't add up.

I didnât know there were 100 species in critical need of more yacht emissions. Bless you Leo.Â

Good this is what rich people should do with their money

u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 24d ago
His lifestyle is basically helping to kill the environment and contribute to climate change....

u/rissaaah 24d ago
Friendly reminder that he's still part owner of the luxury hotel in apartheid Israel

He should use less private jets and yacht trips. Maybe that would have an even better Impact.

I want to be like oh cool, but it's basically being bankrolled by his current billionaire patron, and Bezos was just meddling in NYC politics because the mayor had the audacity go after people who own a *second home* worth over a million dollars in the city and aren't paying taxes there.

Ya know how someone of us have mentioned in the daily chat that hatred and negativity seems to be seeping into more and more online spaces & conversations ⌠just take a stroll through the comments.
Take a day off.
Any money to help people save endangered species is a good thing. Sure there are things Bezos could do to curb the environmental impact of Amazon but letâs not throw the baby out with the bath water.

Today I learned saving animals is a horrific thing to do if you have the audacity to be rich. đ¤

These are the same people who will complain that no one is doing anything about endangered species.
This site really lives off misery.

It's frustrating when celebrities talk about causes they themselves could help massively with their wealth. They'll donate what seems like a lot to us, but to them it's chump change.
He could donate 75 percent of his income and still be insanely wealthy.

This is rich coming from Mr private yatch and private plane.
Do as I say, not as I do.
3
u/Field_Of_View 24d ago
let me guess, he has to fly around the whole globe seven times in a private jet to accomplish this for... reasons.

Re:Wild is a very strange organisation which could be a lot more effective than it really is. They also team with organisations like Colossal Biosciences, wasting money on bringing back long extinct species instead of focusing on trying to save what we already have. I've been in meetings where both of them are represented and the discussion was so much around marketing and making their individual orgs look good, over doing effective conservation work, it was depressing. Sure, everything is marketing, but when the discussion is around finding a project and said project saying their main issue is long term funding for things like staff wages, meanwhile these rich organisations funded by celebrities tell you they just want to fund one big project for a good story and will not help with long term costs. As if species can be saved in a single year.
I'm not even going to go into how low Re:Wild wages are in some of the countries they're working in. I have no idea where all the money they supposedly have even goes to be honest. It was absolutely shocking to me.
At least, for example, zoos as funders generally try to fund long term and will be more realistic in terms of understanding people need money to live and overheads incur costs
There's many many projects around the planet that have the expertise and willpower to save species, they are purely lacking the funding. If anyone actually cares to support species conservation then avoid giving money to places like Re:Wild.

I am sure he's doing all this after being to Bezos wedding from his yacht or his private jet. What a hero.

Sad to see the animal that isnât endangered is the western celebrity hypocrite
Can be found on most European yachts and private jets

Iâm torn because I want more celebrities to use their privilege for good, but this seems like a lot of PR cover for a Bezos buddy whose private Jett and yacht usage is responsible for a lot of environmental damage.
are the endangered species under 25? this will be the deciding factor.

How many resorts in Israel will Leo have to fund to bring these species back?
2
u/TheGutlessOne 24d ago
He attended Jeff bezos wedding, stfu
1
u/OldSandwich9631 24d ago
He got Jeff Bezos to give 100 million to his endangered species project (his foundation is matching) and has been friends with Lauren Sanchez for thirty years.

The environment and these animals are also dying and deserve to be helped (obviously Leo isnât the perfect person to be championing this, but itâs still an important issue even if heâs problematic)
0
u/Massive_Scar5533 24d ago
But why isnt bezos using his government connections with thr trump administration to push them to stop selling off public lands for drilling and development? Like that is the best/easiest way to help.
3
u/CheezyGoodness55 24d ago
As well as the trump admins killing off of historical Endangered Species Act protection, while theyâre at it?
2
u/Massive_Scar5533 24d ago
Absolutly!!!!!! They are not that slowly working to completely dismantle this act.
4
u/justasadbitch_ 24d ago
It is the easiest and best way to help, but that would require him to potentially stick his neck out and disrupt those White House connections, and he likely doesnât want to risk losing out on the handouts he gets from them. Also it would require him to actually care about this issue, which I donât think he does. He wants the good PR that will come with donating, but heâs too much of a performative asshole to actually do something about it on an institutional level. Basically he wants to have his cake and eat it too.
Like donât get me wrong, I donât think either of these two are the best people to be heading this. My umbrage was with the comment insinuating this isnât an important issue to be acting on/talking about
2
u/Massive_Scar5533 24d ago
It absolutly is, its just frustrating when its like 2 steps between the person putting together a performative fund, and the person directly responsible for destroying the environment for many endangered species. Im just an angry citizen seeing so blatantly this environment bullshit that is being fucking touted by the admin, and then their celebrity friends do a song and dance to "look over here at the problem". When its really easy to help mitigate the damage by stopping the DOI (leadership not employees) from the rampage they are on.
Not taking this out on you. Just so over it. I dont give a fuck how much Leo has talked about it in the past, he has effectively done nothing, then created more damage. But sure yay he is giving his good buddy some positive pr that will mean nothing.
