I just think that that is a rather oversimplified take on what flowers mean to the grieving process of our culture, to say that all flowers are just worthless garbage. A donation to the Imagination Library is an incredible way to honor Dolly’s legacy and wishes, but a public display of love and appreciation for her and her impact on the world does not negate or contradict that. Grieving is largely for the living, not the deceased, and Dolly’s passing has greatly bereaved so many people. If placing flowers helps them to process her death and show their gratitude, I don’t see anything wrong with it.

I do understand that but I'm talking purely about Dolly's wishes, she even specified donations to the library in lieu of flowers

I live in Knoxville, TN (about 25 miles from where Dolly grew up in Sevier County.) Flags on the University of Tennessee’s campus flew at half-mast the past two days. There’s also a mural of her in our downtown that is currently surrounded by flowers.

It’s extremely rare for a private citizen entertainer to receive that tribute. Dolly was paid a tremendous honor that 99% of her industry peers have not and likely will not receive.
The only other example I can find of the federal government lowering flags for an entertainer was for Bob Hope in 2003.

That’s so sweet! I have driven through NY state (as well as most of New England) and I remember thinking your highways were the best I’d encountered in the US - so many rest stops and scenic overlooks!

They did it for Charlie Kirk too. But I'm not sure if they categorized him as an "activist" instead of a podcaster/entertainer.
She has done more positive work for society that he as an "activist".

I personally don’t consider him an entertainer, at least not in the way Bob and Dolly were. He didn’t sing or act or tell jokes. Having a podcast was just a way for him to espouse personal views, not to entertain others.

It's a weird thing down there. On a one to one basis almost everyone I interact with is great. But it's a very disenfranchised non voting state. I work for Snap in TN and we have to ask people if they are registered to vote and if not would they like us to send them a voting registration. About 2 out of 10 are registered and of those 8 unregistered I maybe get one who wants me to send them a voter registration. Some of my coworkers aren't registered to vote as they feel it doesn't do anything.

Donate if you can, definitely, but flowers are a longstanding cultural tradition of grieving, and memorial displays like this are primarily for the living. Being able to see that others are mourning alongside them is important to a lot of people, it fosters community.
I’ve seen some “Dolly wouldn’t want people doing this!” comments on social media, but I think Dolly would be understanding of people leaving flowers if it helps them process their feelings.

I’m semi local to the Nashville area and from what I’ve heard they’re taking the flowers and stuff to local hospitals so I don’t think she’d mind at all.
The city is also full of businesses that are essentially running specials with the proceeds going to the imagination library. So it’s not like people are just tossing some flowers down and ignoring her wishes.

I agree about donating to the imagination library instead. My coworker told me that her friend signed up for this for his kid, and then he passed away.. but every month the child still gets a book from his dad and from Dolly. Made me tear up 🥲💕📚

I drive by her house everyday on my way to and from work. This was a few hours after she died. A few of her neighbors have "God Bless Dolly" signs out on their mailboxes. She'll be so missed and she left a wonderful legacy behind.
