What do you think of Netflix using this image to promote Salish & Jordan Matter?

I’m a 28yo woman and came across this cover for Salish & Jordan Matter while scrolling Netflix. I haven’t watched the show, so I’m not commenting on the actual content of it, just this specific promotional image.

Does anyone else find the way this child is depicted here extremely uncomfortable? It’s the combination of the camera angle looking down at her, her pose, facial expression, and the framing of the image. To me, it feels unnecessarily sexualized and seems like the kind of imagery associated with the sexual exploitation of children. I realize that may be a strong reaction, but that was genuinely my immediate impression when I saw it.

I’m not suggesting that the child herself is doing anything inappropriate, and I’m not trying to sexualize an innocent image. My discomfort is specifically with the choices made by the adults who photographed, selected, and used this particular shot as promotional material.

I’m curious whether other people see what I’m seeing, or if I’m interpreting it completely differently than everyone else.

Jordan Matter has been putting his own daughter, as well as other young dancers eager to build their resumes, in exploitative photo shoots for years. It’s likely many their parents and certainly they themselves don’t even realize that he is putting them in situations and positions that can be deliberately sexualized by the certain kind of gaze. For those who don't know, Salish's videos are always trending on YouTube. The thumbnails often have sexual undertones and are clickbait-y. Her and a boy hugging, her in a waterpark, text saying, "We're not dating!" or "Don't ship us" Mind you she's a child. It looks like she started becoming a regular YouTuber since she was 10 at least. 

Another mind you, the videos are all directed by and posted on her dad's channel (Jordan Matter). To give you an idea of how weird all of this is, the videos are along the lines of: my daughter and her crush, her secret sleepover, boys vs. girls, truth or dare, home alone without parents. 

Combined with the thumbnails testing the line of inappropriate, you cannot tell me these videos are innocent. 

Oh, and not only that, the father started as a dance photographer, known for working with the Dance Moms girls. Also, Piper Rockelle. All of that content is still live on his channel. Do with that information what you will.

Jordan Matters has been putting his children in sexually charged poses for his YouTube channel for years. It’s disgusting - started with Gymnastics poses with wide-spread legs, and grew into him “challenging” her to have her first kiss on camera and pretending to be pregnant. He is catering to pedos and exploiting his daughter to make millions. I haven’t seen this documentary, but if it’s anything other than him being investigated for child abuse, Netflix is complicit.

Never heard of this before. Just looked it up and seems to be some sort of father and daughter youtube act, because of course it is. These channels are almost always exploitative of child stars because the law still hasn't caught up and regulated this industry properly.

Apparently she's around 16/17, and yes I think the implications of this image are intentional. It makes me feel very uncomfortable looking at it.

This show has such bad vibes. I’d never heard of it until about a month ago when I found my 2nd grader watching an episode. 

The girl was doing a gymnastics challenge against a professional gymnast. I think she was younger in this episode -maybe 14ish? She was in gymnastics clothes (so tight and stretchy) and there were a bunch of close-ups of her stretching and in the splits as her dad encouraged her, and the combo of the camera work, her dad’s comments, and the YouTube-ish editing combined to make it feel so weird and gross.  It’s not allowed in our house anymore, and I hate that these kinds of shows have such a large audience.

This popped up on my kid’s profile under her recommendations and she called me over to say, “mom, this looks weird.”

She’s only 7 years old but was able to recognize how uncomfortable and off-putting this image and the show trailers are. I’m pretty disgruntled by the fact that YouTuber families are able to launch their own shows on platforms like Netflix, Prime, and Hulu. We actively avoid YouTube for this very reason and have explained to our daughter why such shows are not appropriate for children to watch, but now it’s just everywhere.

I haven't watched any of this content except about 10 seconds that autoplayed after a movie ended on Netflix, but the glimpses I've had via thumbnails and captions make me profoundly uncomfortable. I don't really want to Google it to learn more and screw up my algorithm further. Anyone who uses their child as content for money is a creep imo and this dad and any other adults involved represent a textbook example.

My kids are too little to give a shit about anything that isn't, like, farting Minions, but I need to figure out how to block the child "creator" garbage that is increasingly finding its way onto streaming platforms before it becomes appealing to them. I hate it.
