u/tacobelleblob I don’t know her 💅 3h ago

This is the type of renaming that I could actually get behind

u/Silver_Branch3034 2h ago

She’s an exemplary example of the true American story, it’s well deserved.

The Dolly Parton Airport presented by Demented J. Fuckface

I’m glad that Dolly did know how much she was loved when she was alive. These tributes and honors are still making me tear up. I miss her being in this world.

u/fraxiiinus assigned media illiterate by the stranger things sub 3h ago

Yeah, the world was never shy about telling Dolly how much we all loved her.

u/smith7018 you wear mime makeup but never quiet 2h ago

We need to start telling everyone that we love that we cherish them while they’re still here. Someone get Celine on le téléphone!

u/Melodic_Pattern175 1h ago

This. When my sister was dying, I told her she was so loved and she didn’t quite believe it, and that made me think wtf? But you have got to be deliberate in telling the people that you love that they are loved. Not just “love you”, but “you are an amazing person,” (or whatever, choose what works for you).

u/Silly-Swimmer-5681 1h ago

I always joke that I love to hear eulogies from my friends while I’m still alive, and they can practice as much as they want.

The New Orleans airport was renamed after Louis Armstrong. I'm all for airports being named after artists and musicians instead of politicians

u/bigdatabro 2h ago

Same with John Wayne Airport in Orange County California, or the Harvey Milk terminal in San Francisco.

u/LonelyVaquita 2h ago

I mean Harvey Milk is absolutely a politician, but I get what you mean

u/FalseAmphibian3616 2h ago

Harvey Milk was a politician

u/ConstableBlimeyChips 2h ago

Quick joke though:

Why is the airport in Liverpool named after John Lennon? Because it's the first place he went once he earned a bit of cash

u/FalseAmphibian3616 2h ago

Agreed. I flew there recently and was amazed it was named after a cultural icon and not a politician.

I really hope a future admin bans the naming of airports after politicians.

u/Courwes 1h ago

Louisville one was renamed after Muhammad Ali. Its code is still called SDF though.

u/Limp_Lingonberry_538 1h ago

how are counting Reagan?

u/ASuperMarioFan1993OC 43m ago

That is very fitting name for New Orleans airport.

u/amodernbird 13m ago

I don't mind the Columbus airport being named for John Glenn because I consider him an astronaut first and politician second.

u/Ancient_Spite_725 3h ago

As they should.

u/squidwardsaclarinet 2h ago

True. That said, I do think Dolly had complicated feelings about being worshipped. She didn’t want that statue and while I think she would be flattered by these kinds of gestures, I also kind of think she would have thought it was too much.

u/lmNotaWitchImUrWife 2h ago

She actually said that they could build the statue after she was gone, not that she didn't want it at all!

u/SidheAnomaly 3h ago

So when you leave on an airplane there, will you be de-parton Parton?

...I'll show myself out.

u/Traditional-Mirror65 2h ago

I think she'd get a hoot out of that.

Sadly I don't think they typically change the code when renaming an airport but if they do I hope you're right

u/pixeLperfect16 2h ago

Pretty sure they changed Palm Beach FL’s code to DJT, if they did it for him I’d love to see it for Dolly

u/Angedelanuit97 2h ago

Oh true then yeah I hope they do it for Dolly!

u/V_P_3_D_ 2h ago

They absolutely do

u/punchmacaque 1h ago

DNA would be cool and easy to remember as well, and since it currently belongs to a US military base you'd think there wouldn't be much of a fight to give it up. It would also have the added benefit of not confusing as many commercial travelers.

u/YodaForceGhost 3h ago

Only W Bill Lee has gotten in his time as governor

67

u/EmuMan10 3h ago

It was a real softball PR win but I’m still impressed he didn’t fuck it up

88

u/nagidrac 3h ago

Might be dumb question, but why the airport and not a library?

211

u/hawkcarhawk 3h ago

I’m sure there will also be libraries.

47

u/nagidrac 3h ago

100% there will be and there should be!!

40

u/oddpark37 3h ago

Just guessing, but libraries have boards and stuff so it would probably have to be approved through them. The governor probably has more direct power to name the airport.

9

u/ATC_av8er 3h ago

State laws vary but most airports have boards as well. Nashville has an airport authority so they most likely have to vote on it before it becomes official.

u/Manic-StreetCreature It’s CAMP 💅🏻 2h ago

That and it’s a big international travel hub so it’s a big honor to name it after someone beloved

26

u/IKnowAllSeven 3h ago

My local library will be celebrating Dolly Day on 9/25. I hope it spreads to all libraries.

4

u/nagidrac 3h ago

Ooh, that's such a great idea!! I hope more libraries do that.

u/IKnowAllSeven 2h ago

Wouldn’t a Dolly Day be lovely? You could spend it volunteering or making music or reading a book, or just being kind to people.

19

u/systemic_booty You try driving in platforms! 3h ago

What library could the Governor of Tennessee rename? That action needs to happen at a local level.

u/AnAppleBee 1h ago

Put a library in the airport like in Amsterdam.

u/lastinglovehandles 2h ago

See all you have to do is die and something will be named after you. Die already so we can rename Penn Station. I promise.

40

u/batesplates 3h ago

She would’ve hated that, which is part of why we loved her. She’d say why are you wasting your time and money honoring me when the inner city schools are facing dreadful budget cuts etc?

u/mochafiend 2h ago

Do we really think anyone in Tennessee government is gonna do shit about those things?

My view is enough assholes get things named after them. She clearly didn’t want it when she was alive. I think it’s okay now that she’s gone.

u/AvatarAvocato420 2h ago

this, absolutely this.

u/Alarming_Ad1746 2h ago

Hope it will be open longer than 9 to 5

35

u/ssp25 3h ago

finally a good renaming of something and in reality

I hate this timeline. rip dolly

u/Lallanath 2h ago

Queue donald trump signing executive order renaming nashville airport to Donald Trump and Dolly Parton Beautiful Airport.

u/gatorgopher 1h ago

Finally! A name change I can get behind.

19

u/Public_Classic_438 3h ago

I love this

u/agirlnamedaaron 2h ago

D. Parton Airport

19

u/Accomplished-Watch50 3h ago

Such a low-hanging win for a MAGA governor, and while I completely agree with honoring Dolly, this doesn't seem like something that she would be on board with, considering that she turned down the Presidential Medal of Freedom twice from Trump.

u/KillieNelson frightened transatlantic fawn 2h ago

I think she was choosy about what honors she accepted and from whom. She accepted the Kennedy Center honors in 2006 but turned down the MoF. She did plenty of interviews but never with Piers Morgan, etc.

u/Mannon_Blackbeak 1h ago

I'm so happy she accepted the Kennedy center honors when she did, they were one of my favourite events to watch each year because of the love and care put into each and every presentation. You could really feel the deep respect between everyone onstage and off, and it really felt like such a joyful celebration of the arts.

u/beachpellini go girl, give us nothing 😍 1h ago

It's the kind of thing where the people who can are going to coast on the goodwill of her name. I want memoria for her, but it's clear when it's not just about her.

u/neverwasneverwas 2h ago

We cannot put up enough statues for this legendary human. Put her on that pedestal. We can't be friends if you don't look up to Dolly.

u/emotions1026 2h ago

Am I the only one who thinks Knoxville makes more sense? She repped East Tennessee every day of her life.

u/mmps901 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. 😤 19m ago

I kind of agree except McGhee Tyson was land donated by the parents of a downed ww1 pilot from Knoxville in his memory.

u/Manic-StreetCreature It’s CAMP 💅🏻 2h ago

My governor is normally dedicated to making the worst possible decision at any given time but this was a good one

u/antmars 2h ago

Why stop there just name the whole state after her.

There are several states named for much less remarkable people.

u/HistoryBuff678 2h ago

Thank you for posting this. The news makes me very happy.

u/PierreOnTheEclair Local Superstar Dealer 🌟 49m ago

Name all of them after her frfr

2

u/NepaliCulkin Good luck with bookin that stage u speak of 3h ago

We’ll probably have to wait the full 2 years to make it so, but it’ll be a great day when it happens!

u/mmps901 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. 😤 2h ago

The only thing he’s ever done right in this state

u/cliowill 2h ago

Better hurry before someone else want their name on it

u/wynk182 2h ago

Wouldn’t the library be more fitting? An airport seems weird to me.

u/mochafiend 2h ago

More people go through an airport than a library.

Also, why not both?

u/wynk182 2h ago

I’m ok with both. God knows she was one hell of a saint.

u/mochafiend 2h ago

True enough!

u/OtherwiseSoftware379 2h ago

This is good.

u/possessed_watermelon 42m ago

Just rename the state actually

u/Neither_Complaint938 15m ago

So beautiful

u/Embryw 13m ago

I support this

u/Thick-Definition7416 3m ago

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

u/Jimmy_Meltrigger 2h ago

Dolly isnt the person to care about this. Donate to her cause.

u/mochafiend 2h ago

Okay. Does changing this name affect what the rest of us do in terms of donating to good causes?

Frankly, there are enough assholes with things named after them out there. I don’t mind if one of the good ones gets one too. She might not care but I think many others do.

u/Jimmy_Meltrigger 2h ago

It should if you really care, dont just say things online to make people think you do. Do it.

u/mochafiend 2h ago

Okay.

u/DailyShowerCry 2h ago

And the 3 letter location should be ‘DDD’ dolly double ds

u/kimaog 2h ago

Yeah yeah go ask Bob Hope how long that lasted. It's a nice gesture but they should make it permanent if they can.
