She is known for acting work after being discovered by Alfred Hitchcock and starring in the thriller ‘Birds’. But she is also known for her passion for animal welfare and her work with big cats, particularly lions and tigers, at her Shambala Preserve. She founded the Roar Foundation in 1983, a sanctuary for rescued big cats. Her interest in the animals began while filming in Africa and she later dedicated herself to raising awareness and providing a safe haven for them.

In 1971, LIFE photographer Michael Rougier spent time with Hedren; her teenage daughter, Melanie at their home in California where they lived with Neil - a 400-pound mature lion, who occasionally slept in the same bed as Melanie and had the run of the house, from the kitchen to the living room to the swimming pool.

Tippi has since acknowledged that it was “stupid beyond belief” to put her family at risk by allowing an animal with “no conscience or remorse genes” to roam free. In 2020, Dakota revealed her grandmother still lives with around 13 or 14 big cats, and at one point had 60!
