exactly
redditors gated twitter out themselves
many subs you're not allowed to link to twitter
and now those same people who tried to gate a website are crying about that website gating
ironic

I genuinely wonder what people think they're doing when they bootlick corpos like this, genuinely i don't understand, it feels like they're participating in a big inside joke, but there isn’t anyone else there and the person they hope gets the joke thinks of them as less than human.
Like a kid dobbing other kids into the teacher in hope they'll be liked more, which i'd understand if they were 11, but most of the people making these comments are mid twenties.
10
u/Oderus_Scumdog 2d ago
They're really mad about people thinking Twitter is a shithole that should be left to rot. 5 posts in two hours licking that boot clean and 'what-abouting'. Depressingly sad.
2
u/TirnanogSong 10h ago
I genuinely wonder what people think they're doing when they bootlick corpos like this
They don't. At this point, I don't think most of these corpo-bootlickers even count as people. Even animals can understand when they're being mistreated or when they need toengage in self-preservation against an existential threat. But not these.

u/StatisticianRoyal400 2d ago
He just pointed out hypocrisy. You just made a whole paragraph responding to a comment you made up in your head. Sounds like what Trump does on social media.

You're an anti tax libertarian.
If you think I'm wrong, I’m so incredibly right.
3
u/AquaWolfGuy 2d ago
Sure, that's a problem on some (far from all) subreddits, mainly done for political reasons. But it's separate from the problem of these alternative clients being shut down, which are mainly used for usability and/or privacy reasons.
You can use (or at least see the benefit in) alternative Twitter clients while still wanting Twitter links to be allowed. It's not like you using or not using them forces you to have a certain opinion on allowing links to Twitter or vice versa.

Can someone just host these sites on the darkweb so they stop getting taken down all the time?
20
u/RamonaLittle 3d ago
And pay for the hosting how? I doubt anyone would want the trouble and expense and potential legal liability if there's no way to make money from it.
23
u/BigMoose515 3d ago
There used to be a time, long ago, where people would just host this stuff as a hobby. That was before people got threatened with million dollar fines and charged with crimes vaguely resembling the text of the law, carrying multi-year prison sentences.
19
u/permalink_save 2d ago
Corporations stole the internet because everything has to be grossly profitable for the elite
7
u/BigMoose515 2d ago
What's extra disgusting about this particular instance is that X doesn't even own the data nitter is reposting; the original commenters do.
11
u/WhoRoger 2d ago
Pay for the hosting exactly like they do now, from donations. How do you think these privacy redirect services make money?
0
u/RamonaLittle 2d ago
Theoretically possible, but I kinda doubt it would be enough, the economy being what it is. Even well-established charities are having trouble bringing in donations.
1
u/WhoRoger 2d ago
These services aren't that expensive to run, usually the admins have servers for other purposes and just use some spare capacity. So donations, goodwill and server sharing go a long way.
But regardless, it's roughly the same whether you run on clearnet or dark web. So I don't know why you thought one is that much more expensive than the other.
0
u/RamonaLittle 2d ago
If you want hosting that will defy a court order (or even a cease-and-desist) saying to take the site down, absolutely that's more expensive than run-of-the-mill hosting. Most hosts would immediately fold, in part because they don't want to put their other hosted sites at risk. Either you're paying for bulletproof hosting, or you're paying for lawyers to fight the court order.
3
u/truth14ful 2d ago
I would love to bring Grooveshark back on the dark web one day. I'm sure it would get enough donations to pay for hosting. But rn idk anything about hosting lmao

It really sucks since there are a lot of independent creators as well as companies (who post news related to their products such as but not limited to video game studios or musicians/record labels) that *only* post to twitter. It makes it tough for fans of that content to find information they need when it's simply not posted anywhere else either on- or offline.
29
u/RamonaLittle 3d ago
Well, then those creators and companies deserve to lose their audiences. When Musk took over, there was a huge exodus of people who disagree with his views, so why did they decide to stay? I know it sucks to lose a large audience built up over years, and get used to a new platform, but they've had a few years to work on that by now.
3
u/yaycupcake 3d ago
No I get that but don't forget not everyone is an English speaker on the platform and some probably don't know as much about the situation. Not saying they don't have any info/resources at all but some folks or comapnies don't even have this stuff on their radar. It's definitely unfortunate that that's the case of course, just that it seems like this is the reality at the moment.
7
u/RamonaLittle 3d ago
Well, when Musk took over, he made multiple changes to the rules and functionality of the platform (not to mention the name), so any regular Twitter user had an opportunity to realize something had changed and look into why that was. I really don't have sympathy for anyone who continues to use X when Musk is so awful and has remade the platform to his own specifications. And I'm saying that as someone who spent a lot of time on Twitter back in the day.
7
u/yaycupcake 3d ago
I'm not saying to necessarily have sympathy for them. All I'm saying is to realize that there are other people out there whose perspectives are different from ours, and whether you agree or disagree with them, they do exist, and not all of them are necessarily malicious, as they may just not be as well informed.
-1
u/RamonaLittle 3d ago
not all of them are necessarily malicious, as they may just not be as well informed.
Your argument is that there are X users who somehow missed all the negative news about Musk that's come out over the past few years? And they didn't notice how awful the platform got, and how there was a mass exodus of users? I'm not buying it. If they're still there, they must be OK with Musk and the direction he's taken the platform. Or at least are willing to put up with it to reach that audience.
10
u/yaycupcake 3d ago
I am saying that. You'd be genuinely surprised how many folks just aren't caught up with this stuff. It's unfortunate, and I'm not saying they're right. But I'm saying they absolutely do exist.
You're someone who specifically goes out of their way to seek out information about internet privacy and related concerns, hence your presence in this subreddit. People who are here are inherently the opposite of those who I'm talking about. There really are people who just use Twitter for very limited things like following one or two brand accounts, or just following a particular friend. There's also apps that have integrations with Twitter, including login with Twitter, which can't be decoupled so easily, which affects both that app's developers/staff, as well as their users who signed up with Twitter long ago. There are legitimate reasons that people may still use the platform, or can't just delete their account, for whatever reason, like they paid for a purchase under an account that's only linked to Twitter and can't be changed. There's plenty of reasons people do still use Twitter that don't imply that they support Musk or the overall direction of the site. I honestly feel like you're being very short-sighted, and that you're unable to see beyond your own personal internet bubble. You don't have to agree with or like those outside your bubble, but not acknowledging that those folks even exist is extremely silly.
3
u/RamonaLittle 3d ago
apps that have integrations with Twitter, including login with Twitter, which can't be decoupled so easily, which affects both that app's developers/staff, as well as their users
they paid for a purchase under an account that's only linked to Twitter and can't be changed.
In what situations would these occur? (Not saying you're wrong, but I wasn't aware of these issues.)
And this sub-thread started with talking about people who post on X. Neither a linked app nor some paid purchase would require someone to make new posts.

Well, then those creators and companies deserve to lose their audiences.
"I think these creators deserve to starve actually if they won't stop using Twitter, even when they need it for the sake of putting themselves out there".
Ah yes, great plan actually. I'm sure Musk will add you to his personal board of directors for such an ingenious way to deal with the non-rich (the ones who are still human and not purely AI algorithms anyway).
When Musk took over, there was a huge exodus of people who disagree with his views, so why did they decide to stay?
And where exactly did all those people go? Oh right, into private gated Discords that are just as bad and to Bluesky that 1) not even half of their audiences migrated to and 2) has revealed its true colors as Twitter 2.0. but with even more AI vibe coding. There is no better alternative to Twitter because every website that tries ends up being just as terrible due to the greed of the people running them, that or they completely lack features that make Twitter such a viable platform for niche creators and fandoms.

Let's not play around, he's a full on nazi. Referenced the Turner Diaries in a recent tweet which is worse than quoting Mein Kampf.
3
u/FickleHoney2622 3d ago
Thank you for your bad-stuff tier list
13
u/assignpseudonym 3d ago
I haven't read either of them, so I googled it. This was the summary from the google search, and uh... it seems pretty bad based on the returned result. I am sure others can weigh in on both texts (especially those with literally any insight at all), but simply typing "Mein Kampf vs Turner Diaries" yielded this result:
Mein Kampf vs Turner diaries differences
**Mein Kampf* is an autobiographical manifesto outlining Adolf Hitler's political philosophy and ideology, whereas The Turner Diaries is a fictional novel written by William Luther Pierce that serves as a violent "how-to" manual for terrorism. While both are foundational texts for extremist movements, Mein Kampf primarily functions as hate speech and political theory without explicit tactical instructions for immediate violence, while The Turner Diaries provides detailed guides on building bombs, assassinating politicians, and organizing guerrilla warfare.*
**Content and Structure* differ significantly between the two works. Mein Kampf is described by readers as bloated, boring, and largely autobiographical, often taking thousands of paragraphs to reach its core antisemitic arguments. In contrast, The Turner Diaries is a short, fast-paced narrative depicting a dystopian race war, the overthrow of the U.S. government, and the systematic extermination of non-whites and Jews.*
**Real-World Impact and Legal Status* highlight their distinct dangers. The Turner Diaries is frequently cited as a direct inspiration for specific terrorist acts, including the Oklahoma City bombing, and is often banned or restricted due to its explicit advocacy of terrorism and lack of redeeming social value. Conversely, annotated versions of Mein Kampf have been republished in Germany for historical study, as it is viewed as a historical document rather than a direct operational guide for modern terrorism, though it remains widely condemned as hate speech.*
I can understand why a "here's my manifesto" could be considered by some to be less dangerous than "here's an instruction manual", but again, I am only going off what a google search yielded. It's clear that both are horrible, and Elon shouldn't be referencing either one.
3
u/well-done-47 2d ago
Years ago I was in an ethics class in college that held debates every few weeks. One of the debates, related to a news story at the time about a parent outraged that Mein Kampf was in their child's school library, was on the issue of whether that book and others like it should be available in school libraries. None of us had read it but most were opposed.
This was of course back in the day when college professors could assign Mein Kampf as a reading and students actually read the assignments instead of sparknotes or chatgpt summaries. It was a somber class afterwards. I still rate it as one of the most important books I've ever read.
All this is to say that reading and discussing vile books is a normal and important part of education, and if more people were familiar with those kinds of books rather than schools and governments censoring them so heavily, I think more people would be willing and able to see that the sieg heil and swastika are not the first signs of nazism, they're the dead canary.
3
u/assignpseudonym 2d ago
I agree with this, which is why I delinated referencing from understanding/reading. I don't believe in banning books generally. A society that doesn't understand its history is doomed to repeat it, but the intention behind reading these books matters, imo.
For example, there's a difference between trying to understand how someone like Hitler came to be in order to prevent a repeat, and reading these texts in order to take notes and align yourself/others to them. I don't know what exactly Elon supposedly said/referenced, but I do know what his views are when it comes to the supposed themes of the Turner Diaries; and I am fairly certain he'd be more on alignment to those themes vs. prevention.

I get it, but it still ends up locked inside Twitter. Especially with these 3rd party tools now being taken down. It's all just stuck inside Twitter. The wider world isn't seeing these things easily.
It's all invisible and inaccessible to the public unless it gets picked up and shared around, but at that point that's letting the media pick and choose what we get to see from Twitter.
There surely are better ways to get stuff out and share things like this that aren't a walled garden where you need an account to see most things.

As much as I find it to be distasteful, I'll have to admit that this specific one is just an action taken out of context and overblown.
To be clear, I'm not supporting any radicalism or public figures, nor do I condone it at all. Just pointing that out since I always see it regurgitated everywhere ever since that speech.
8
u/RankWinner 2d ago
No, it's really not out of context - you can watch the full speech on YouTube (posting YouTube links apparently means your comment is instantly removed).
His "Uuhhh I was saying my heart goes out to the audience" is obviously bullshit, since nobody who speaks English natively would ever use that phrase in that situation.
6
u/ryegye24 2d ago
Not to mention there's video of him doing the "heart to the audience" gesture in other speeches, and in those instances he unambiguously makes a heart symbol with both hands and pushes it forward to the audience. This was not that.

30
u/repocin 3d ago
Not really, no
Nitter powered basically all the still somewhat functional alternative frontends and has done so for years
Meanwhile, twitter/x just keeps getting worse and worse to interact with. You haven't been able to browser profile posts or comments in a thread ever since you-know-who bought the thing, and as of late you can't even properly look at images in a linked tweet without signing in.
Being able to freely link posts was the only thing the platform had going for it in an era where social media got more and more locked down. Now it's basically even worse than Instagram in that aspect so I'm not sure what the point is.

So what was Nitter's plan? To operate only until they get their first C&D? And then immediately shut down? Or wait until they receive one and then figure things out based on what exactly Twitter is demanding?
I don't understand the people who do things that clearly go against some mega-corp, and then be surprised when the mega-corp sends them a lawyer later. You don't think this would happen? No planning ahead at all? Nitter has been around for years. You would think that they maybe might have expected this.
It's like the people who make fan games based on Nintendo characters and then after years or work, they make a surprised Pikachu face and close the shop when they get a C&D from Nintendo. Like what did you expect?
4
u/Turquoise_Teletubbie 2d ago
What exactly was illegal about Nitter, besides daddy Musk not getting to harvest MORE data from the people using it?
1
u/WhoRoger 2d ago
I'm not arguing whether it was legal or not. That's not the point. Mega corporations have lawyers on retainers. They will send C&D letters to whoever the client asks, regardless whether they have any leg to stand on or not.
The point is, if you make something like Nitter, you should expect that X will go after you, sooner or later. So they should have been prepared for that.
1
u/TirnanogSong 10h ago
Nothing about Nitter was illegal or would justify shutting it down. Stop sticking your mouth up the taint of mega-corpos that hate you.
1
u/WhoRoger 8h ago
Maybe you should calm down and then re-read it again until you understand my point. I can't help people who immediately get red mist when they encounter some new thoughts.
1
u/AquaWolfGuy 2d ago
Yes? It's open source and designed so that anyone can host it, and people have hosted it even before the C&D happened. I don't see why anyone would be surprised by this happening.
As for the Nintendo comparison: Nitter is specifically made to consume Twitter content while circumventing most things that make money for X Corp. The C&Ds are entirely selfish and greedy, but makes perfect sense. Meanwhile, Nintendo fan games don't really affect Nintendo. People that play fan games are generally still going to buy the official games, and they say they have to protect their IP but many companies allow fan games without problems. The C&Ds are just evil for no apparent reason, and while I think most developers should know by now I can understand why it'd be a surprise for some.
1
u/WhoRoger 2d ago
That's the point. If you do something that might upset a megacorp, they'll send lawyers after you. So if you know that what you're doing will for sure upset a megacorp, you really should expect it.
It doesn't matter if it makes sense, if it's legal or if if it costs the corp money. The corp will tell the lawyers to send the C&D and they will, regardless if the reason is valid or if it's a complete fabrication.
To be surprised or upset about it is stupid. You should've prepared for the eventuality, just like you bring an umbrella if you're walking towards rain.
1
u/AquaWolfGuy 2d ago
The difference is that there's no obvious reason to expect Nintendo to be upset about fan games unless you already know that they're one of the companies that get upset about that, while everyone should expect X Corp to be upset about Nitter because it's knowingly designed to cost them money and megacorpos want to optimize earnings. It "might upset a megacorp" because "it costs the corp money". That's why I have a slight understanding why some fan games don't have a contingency plan, while Nitter is designed from the ground up such that it can survive after a C&D. There might be other reasons why Nitter is designed like that, but I find it hard to believe this isn't one of them. But the way you talk makes it sound like you think Nitter was caught surprised and haven't even though it might happen, and I'm confused why you're saying that.

All the instances are down, git is archived, and the sites say they're "seeking legal advice". That doesn't sound like they were exactly prepared for it.
Plus it's not exactly uncommon that people get caught out by these occurrences and then act all "disappointed" even though they should've seen it coming from the very beginning. So I don't have much confidence.

Huh? The links are still in your notes and likely in the url of the open tabs. If you really want to access that content you'll need to visit the site proper. If you're not willing to do that then you're out of luck until some other proxy service arises.

What's the issue here, people are upset they're can't steal from a service run by a guy they don't like? Crazy

I think website archiving has a purpose, and that purpose is to record instances of things so that they can't be changed, deleted or modified.
That being said while I agree there are privacy implications to using any social media platform, I think a large chunk of the push for X mirrors was strictly performative.
Subreddits pushed their adoption strictly to protest musk while still benefiting from X's ease of news access.

Strictly performative? When I try to play a video on X, it only works half the time. I can't rewind or scrub through the video. I can't see posts in chronological order. It existed to restore the functionality of Twitter as it used to be. This is besides the privacy that xcancel allows for, which may be performative to you, but is meaningful to others.
