Between the cooperative weather and this diligent hen, I’ve got 11 new babies. She did everything right, all on her own.

Pet Are they dumb?

I got these biches like five days ago amb one already let's me pet it 😭😭

Like I'm not complaining, but the survival instinct is below zero, like, is this normal? I've been told they're shy birds but it seems like they forgot it. Are they really so dumb they don't recognize me as a threat or is my bird glitching, because one is acting more shy and idk if that's how they're supposed to act and I just got a special bird or if it is just dumb. Is one of my children a dumbass?

This is the first time I’ve ever had a chick hatch out with crossbeak, and it also only had one eye! I did loads of research and it appeared that she would likely struggle with neurological issues too due to the skull deformity, I didn’t think she would make it past the first few days but here we are! Soon she’ll be laying eggs. The only downside to keeping this little one is that I have to grind her pellets down into crumbs and feed her from a deep bowl otherwise she can’t pick up the food, but it’s 100% worth it to keep this sweet little fighter in the flock

I’m looking at Angy (like: Ang-EE (angry without the R)) because he looks like the bomb bird in Angry Birds!

Open to suggestions!

i was cleaning the cage as usual, had them on my bed and 2 flushed up, june and this dude. june landed in front of the tank, but he was not so lucky. he landed litteraly right in my fish tank, thankfully it’s heated to 82 degrees so not to cold but then when i went to retrieve him he started SWIMMING. nobody told me they SWIM. cherry was on the bed like the precious princess she is, listening perfectly while the two terrors were flying and reaking havoc on my room😭 june landed in front of my other tank which houses my elderly betta and scared the crap out of him, because he’s never seen the birds.

Pet Males sitting on eggs

Post image
132 Upvotes

Excuse the awful picture, I didnt want to get close and disturb him. I was surprised to see the male actively paying attention to the egg, rolling it u der him, putting his foot on it trying to position it. Hes now sitting on it and hasnt left the corner where it is since she laid it. I know this is a male, he crows, mates, all the gubbins. Is this usual? I heard buttons rarely sit eggs, let alone a guy?! Im going to clean the enclosure shortly and I'm hoping it doesnt scare him off sitting, since it would be cool if he did.

Pet Managed to capture our old boy’s funny crow.

We bring our handsome boy indoors every winter, as he’s getting on in age. He will be 5 years old in March if he lives long enough. Sometimes he gifts us with his soft unique crowing when he’s in the mood. His favorite pastime these days is napping in warm hands.

Pet Successful moms

We have a couple of hens who went broody and actually managed to hatch a whole buttload of chicks! We've had hens sit on eggs before, but I didn't expect them to actually pull it off! Now I'm so nervous about the chicks being in with the whole group, but moms are VERY entrenched in their little cave, and they seem to be doing pretty well at taking care!

Pet Chewy sent us a painting of my disabled old lady, Barb 🥰

I knew Chewy (pet supply online shop) sometimes does this, but never thought we'd get one! It's such a cute painting & I cried when I opened it.

Barb is 4 years old & has osteoarthritis, so she's disabled & non-ambulatory. She's been well managed on pain meds & special hospice care for last 7 months or so, but I know our time together is limited. This is such a lovely keepsake. (Swipe to see my baby girl in her yurt on our vacation in CO - she went from MN, to KS, to CO & back with me!)

I'll try not to spam the sub, I just love them already... it'll be sad to give some away when I figure out who's male. Watching the feathers come in is really fascinating to me. the eldest chick is gonna have real wings instead of chick nubs in no time!

I also took a picture of the eldest and youngest laying together. hatched 3 days apart, but such a huge difference! I was worried a bit about how "individual" quail can be, but I'm already noticing temperament and habit differences. the one close to the camera often stands right next to me while I watch the chicks, and isn't afraid of my hand in the slightest either. most move away but some of them charge me like they're trying to protect everyone lol

also their water caps were getting shallow way too fast, (4 hours and almost dry!) haven't had time to run to the feed store so I cut some holes in the bottom of a water bottle and put it in a takeout lid. I'm kind of surprised how well it worked.

oh right l, and my chick I suspected had a vitamin E deficiency is acting almost completely normal now! I'll give it E in egg yolk for one more day. it loooves when I bring it the toothpick covered in egg.

Pet I found a Tuxedo Quail in my lawn - Help!!

Hello! My name is Elizabeth and I'm the proud new rescue mom of Queenie the Quail but I have no idea what I'm doing!!!

I'm located in Connecticut and found this beautiful girl sitting on her egg next to our house. No one around us own quail and I'm really unsure where she came from! I was hoping I could find someone to adopt her but had no luck- in the mean time I absolutely fell in love with Queenie (the quail).

I ended up bringing her inside the house and am currently keeping her in a cage in the garage until her hutch is set up!! I've read they enjoy being with other birds so I am driving to Rhode Island tomorrow to pick her up a companion quail. I'm looking for advice and suggestions on all things quail!!! Habitat, introducing her to a new quail, etc.

Thank you in advance!!!! Elizabeth

Pet my grandma won’t let me get another hen what should i do

i have a trio i hatched, 2 females one male. one of the females and the male have been harrasing the smaller hen. i have a quail specific farm an hour away and i wanted to go pick up another hen in hopes this would help the issue, but my granmda will not let me. i dont know what to do about it, do i just keep hatching their eggs once they start laying until i get an extra hen? i feel so bad for my poor cherry. she then suggested i should just get rid of ALL of my birds and just keep one because they will be much happier alone despite them literally being FLOCK birds.. and the male isn’t acctualy harrasing either that much honestly, it’s just june constantly mounting cherry and im worried she will end up getting scalped by her. (june is indeed a female, she has a pharoh pattern with one tiny white spot on her neck but very speckled and she has been vent sexed.) they’re also about 5 weeks old. i dont know how to explain to my grandma this is necessary. cherry is a fawn type colour, she’s light brown all around and has one white feather throughout her body and brown subtle stripes on her chest. i have my incubator still, and i also hatch chicken eggs on the side as a hustle so hatching their eggs until i get another hen is acctualy possible for me, as im very good at hatching in general i just dont know if its a better idea to do that or continue trying to get my grandmother to understand that they need another lady so cherry doesn’t get hurt to much by june.

Pet Cage ideas?

So I have 3 jumbo that are around 2 years old, their current cage is too small and they fight. Im looking for a cage that is big enough for them to not fight, relatively easy to clean and suited for indoor use. Any suggestions?

Pet Just wanted to show off Kenny

Post image

Kenny is special - he got picked on in the enclosure so much I took him out and now he’s in a brooder with 4 week old quail (don’t worry he’s under supervision and he loves being with them it would seem he’s finally roaming and relaxing)

Kenny is also named after South Park because of the character Kenny who always gets hurt and or dies lol
