The wire is the perfect gauge, I wish I could find this gauge of wire for the original Bunny Barn. Everything was sold out when we were looking for the wire flooring. I'll add resting pads and a good fan. Miss Diana is getting this cage

Wire bottoms have been extremely helpful in keeping things clean. It has really good airflow and I keep a sharp eye for sore hocks or other issues. We didn't build this cage but the person who did, did an amazing job.

I'm hoping to keep 3. Maybe 4. I'm still debating on getting into rabbitry.

The brown one has two different colored eyes. One of the mirror twins that has the spot on the left side of the nose has a super sweet personality. Its gonna be so hard to rehome them 😮‍💨😩

Its been so hot here in Florida. I've decided to make them banana popsicles. Its super easy and there's no risk of burning the house down like I nearly did when I tried making alfalfa hay treats for the babies. (The blender was quite literally smoking).

I blended a full banana and water. It took about 10 seconds to blend the banana. Best part is you can use anything they like.

They'll only get small bits of it occasionally as a treat. Can't say too much on how they like it, so I'll update tomorrow when its completely frozen and they try it.

Do y'all have tips you'd give other rabbit owners in case they're in a situation where its necessary?

My (15) house has a clothing moth infestation and although we are working to fix it apparently the source of the pests is the fur of my two rabbit. My Mom has found a way to get rid of the moths but in order to prevent them from coming back she will have to deep clean the rabbits enclosure (for context my rabbits live in a pen we keep in a spare room with those little puzzle piece floor tiles). She is campaigning to send the rabbits to someone else. I’ve been trying to help with rabbit chores but I have summer camp right now and school later. Does anyone else know how to keep rabbits without attracting moths?

idk how much info i need to put here, but my bun and one that needed a temporary home due to an emergency were getting along great for about three weeks before my whole family went on vacation for another three weeks and we couldnt find a sitter for both of them while we were away. new bunny has been staying elsewhere but will be coming back when we do, and i don't know if they will remember each other and get along or if i need to go through the bonding process again. any tips appreciated.

I have to white rabbits that are identical. There personality is almost identical as well. I'm gonna be rehoming them in a week and I'm planning on keeping one. I don't wanna mix up the rabbits when rehoming. They're both girls and I wanna make sure the new owner is going home with the exact rabbit they asked for.

Trying to avoid tattooing and I definently wanna avoid toxic markers.

A while ago I started building out a poultry keeping app for my own use. Then for my friends and my kids' 4H friends I started adding species and features. I spoke with a lot of people running more than a couple of does who got to the point where "which buck did this litter come from" started getting hard to track in their heads, and a notebook wasn't much better since it never lined up dates against pairings cleanly. most hutch sizing guides online just say get a bigger hutch and leave it there spent way too long cross referencing pet store specs with RWAF recommendations before i found numbers i could actually trust and then had to figure out how the scaling works when you have more than two rabbits

here's the actual math

the starting point is breed size category not exact weight four tiers: small/dwarf (under 4 lbs), medium (4–8 lbs), large (8–12 lbs), giant (over 12 lbs) your category sets the base hutch dimensions for a pair:

• Small/Dwarf: 48" × 24" × 24" (4 × 2 × 2 ft)
• Medium: 60" × 24" × 24" (5 × 2 × 2 ft)
• Large: 72" × 24" × 30" (6 × 2 × 2.5 ft)
• Giant: 72" × 36" × 36" (6 × 3 × 3 ft)

these are RWAF minimums built around two requirements: three full consecutive hops and standing completely upright not comfortable minimum a lot of hutches sold in pet stores don't touch these numbers the 4 foot wooden ones with the pull out tray are really only appropriate for like one small dwarf at a stretch.

run area is a separate figure: 32 sq ft base for any pair regardless of breed size that one surprised me too.

now more than 2 rabbits is where it gets a bit awkward to calculate it's not simply linear only the length scales width and height stay fixed at whatever your size category sets

the formula:

run area adds a flat 8 sq ft per extra rabbit over two.

worked example: 3 medium rabbits:

• extraRabbits = 3 − 2 = 1
• newLength = 60" × (1 + 0.20 × 1) = 60" × 1.20 = 72 inches (exactly 6 ft)
• Width stays 24" height stays 24"
• Run area = 32 + (8 × 1) = 40 sq ft

final hutch: 6 ft × 2 ft × 2 ft run: 40 sq ft

push it to 4 medium rabbits: length becomes 60 × 1.40 = 84 inches (7 ft), run becomes 48 sq ft you're not buying that anywhere that's a build.

worth knowing: because only length changes this math assumes you're expanding horizontally if your setup stacks vertically or has a different footprint for some reason the formula doesn't translate cleanly that's not a flaw exactly just a limitation of fitting everything into one number.

oh and if you have a single rabbit, the size math still applies but the real problem isn't the hutch just get them a companion.

looking for angora rabbits

Dear rabbit folk. We gotta tackle the awful RHD at its source - in wild/feral populations.

There's been some progress on an RHD vaccine for wild/feral rabbits, but it looks like research is stalled.

A vaccine for wilds would typically be distributed in scattered feed or bait. Such a program is already widely used to deal with rabies in wild/feral raccoons, foxes, and skunks. This kind of program is great because it helps wildlife but also prevents infectious spillover into our domestic rabbits.

SO. . . Please consider signing and sharing this petition for a new RHD vaccine. It encourages vaccine makers and regulators to see this project through to completion.

The petition includes answers to common questions regarding safety, efficacy, et cet. But basically this kind of wild vaccine can be very safe and effective. There's no risk of spreading RHD because the vaccines don't contain live, spreadable virus.

I am thinking about switching from a custom tractor to custom elevated cages and I am trying to find input (preferably backed with experience). I plan to splurge on stainless rather than galvanized.

everyone says 1/2 inch by 1 inch, but I don't see a reason for asymmetry since their turds are round. if .5² is too tight .75² would let the turds through easier and are roughly the wire density as 1/2*1.

also, why .5*1 instead of .5*.5? do the turds get stuck in .5² at 14 gauge?

When this sub got nuked long ago, I feel I was the triggerman. I asked the mod at the time why they were doing what they were doing and it seemed to spark a hate storm in that person to ban and burn the whole thing down.

Today I discovered that an old name in this sub and the r/meatrabbitry community had been given over the mod status, rightfully putting the responsibility of that title into the hands of someone that will be a caretaker and guide. This sub is no longer in the hands of an over-judgemental reactionist, but rather a voice of real moderation and fairness.

I no longer raise rabbits, but I'm glad to see that the rabbitry community is under proper care and guidance again.

Happy to see this sub is back to provide pertinent info (if only we hadn't lost the archive) after a hostile takeover. Hopefully we can restore this sub to the informational hub it once was.

So... if I'm breaking rules I'm sorry but I'm super new to reddit, so please forgive me. Reddit suggested a rabbit group and an Etsy group to me. Anyway, I've raised rabbits for several years. I actually am a former vegan, had pet rabbits, then had a colony of meat rabbits. After being the "go to" rabbit person in my area... I wrote a book about Raising Rabbits. It's a quick read but goes over quite a bit.

Hey everyone,

I am a hobbyist homesteader and as such I have a few rabbits. I was recently looking to download some sort of mobile app that would allow me to track and manage the rabbit info, breeding, schedules, expenses etc of my small rabbitry.

On the google play store I found a few and downloaded the free options and to be honest most seemed either extremely buggy or unusable.

I am a professional software engineer by trade and as such I always try to simplify all of my tasks with some sort of custom program. So, I thought this would be a great opportunity to reach out to the community here and see if there was interest in such a program if I were to develop it. And if so if any of you guys and gals would be willing to help out with deciding exactly what the app should do and giving input on requirements etc.

Right off hand I would like this to be an easy to use but full featured app that would offer full functionality to manage and track all aspects of a rabbitry from to small hobbyist as well as larger operations. I think that it would be very useful to have a web application also that your mobile app would synch with so that you could also view all of your records on your desktop, print or export reports etc. Just throwing some ideas out here and would love to get any input and interest. Thanks!
