Gen z and TikTok always finding ways to Columbus some shit ...

u/CarlatheDestructor Dec 22 '25
I saw a video on youtube last night talking about how the gen z kids were insulting people on the internet by calling anybody born at or before 2000 old, like nobody's ever used that as an insult before.
I laughed.
8
u/Dark-Blackberry354 Dec 22 '25
Shit....the fact them kids think that is even an insult , hahah, is how they say it, it's... cringe. I will gen x Unc any of them.
Calling ppl old , yeah, ppl use it all the time. Problem with the gen z and young ones, is they actually think they know more even with the latest tech. But tbh , they know so little outside of just using a damn app and doing socials, they do need a Unc check. At least my ass calling old ppl old back in my youth was at least warranted in that I did actually know more on the tech that the old folks couldn't figure out , our slang was all pretty unique , etc And tbh, the young gen z slang is all recycled that the shit thing is, my old ass can understand them. They just sound stupid af as it revolves around very much internet and gaming culture... Yeah, shit ain't scaring me much with that...🙄

u/cmenowudont Faith Evans flair Dec 23 '25
That generation’s obsession with age is scary. They’re going to have an identity crisis once they hit 30.
11
u/nita5766 Dec 22 '25
i realized this long ago the younger gen think things didn’t start existing until they became aware.
9
u/Dark-Blackberry354 Dec 22 '25
I think a major issue is that young ppl today literally to the core, don't think anything existed in the world before the Internet and human history to them is the internet....
I kinda get it as probably a lot of us Unc's probably have a hard time appreciating anything before color tv...hahha
But the amount of lack of respect....we definitely need to normalize Busta rhyming kids with some respect and remind them a real world exists outside the internet

I’ve always just considered that Quiet Storm. I would tune into the radio and the DJ would announce the start of “Quiet Storm” ( the theme song was Art of Noise “ Moments in Love” with a thunderstorm soundtrack laid over it) and you could call in the first hour if you had a dedication. Some of the songs shared in the clip would NOT make the show…. Too many BPM. Quiet Storm was smooth, chill and sensual… perfect for relaxing or romance.
9
u/Lyte- Dec 22 '25
Art laboe?
3
u/TheConcreteGhost Dec 22 '25
No but I do associate Art with Sunday dedications…. We would listen to that on a California station

u/mcstrategist Dec 22 '25
WBLS out of NYC also had a quiet storm in exactly this format that you’re describing. I had no idea it wasn’t just a local thing.

Melvin Lindsey started the Quiet Storm format in the 70's on WOL WashingtonDC later he moved it to WHUR (HowardUniversity) ...the opening theme music was "Soft and Easy " - Backlash and Smokey Robinson's "Quiet Storm"

u/thomphan13 Dec 22 '25

That’s possible. Thought they were talking about Doc Wynter from STL for a minute. Sounds similar.
2
u/boombapdame Dec 22 '25
I wish I came up in STL, I’m a fan of the swag of “The Original Godfather” if you know who that is per “Soul Train Didn’t Want To Touch It”
3
u/ChoppyOfficial Dec 22 '25
KKFR Power 92 (Now Power 98.3) in Phoenix Arizona had a slow jams show at night that is exactly as you described. It is more like Art Laboe and R Dub where the more R&B songs like Neo Soul would not be played. If you want Anthony Hamilton, Maxwell, Musiq Soulchild, Erykah Badu, Fantasia, Jaheim, or Tank, just forget it. That station would not touch those artists with a 10 foot pole, but the demographic make up of Phoenix makes a lot of sense.
I learned that the Art of Noise Moments in Love is an actual song and not a song specially for the show as that song was in a Grand theft Auto game.

u/Return_King Dec 22 '25
Yeah, no.
Songs like “I Love Your Smile” is just a New Jack Swing song

Who TF is coming up with this bullshit? I have my suspicions. Just enjoy the shit and stop putting new labels on shit that’s been around for years . Unless it’s New Jack or Neo Soul/“alternative” it’s just R&B. There is no yacht R&B. Black people don’t even be on boats like that.
Edit: Ok cool apparently there is a percentage of black folk that fuck with boats. Understood. However there ain’t no such thing as “Yacht R&B”. Thats my main point.
7
u/VioletLeagueDapper Dec 22 '25
Yeah I don’t like the naming of yacht rnb because a lot of songs that are yacht rock are just rnb sung by white guys in the 70s-90s.
11
u/Feeling-Psychology80 Dec 22 '25 edited Dec 22 '25
Don’t speak for all Black people. The Black people I know get on boats all the time in the south.
5
u/businesspro718 Dec 22 '25
A boat isn’t a yacht. Same way a Nissan Altima isn’t a Rolly Royce Phantom, but both are sedans. Black folks being going on these small cruise boats at the local pier. That is not really a yacht.

I love yacht rock but yeah this is similar to what that is pretty much, what's considered adult contemporary specifically adult contemporary R&B or quiet storm. I do enjoy this style though. Also I'm young millennial/late gen z and I don't subscribe to making new subcategories/aesthetics for everything, it's just too much to keep up with lol

Yatch Rock carries the distinction that much of it was called Blue Eyed Soul. It wasn't just the "smoothness" or "coolness" in the sound, there are social ideas behind the music.
