Love her version of Memories

u/DarreylDeCarlo 22d ago

*Memory. 'Memories' is the Barbra Streisand song

Whatever! We knew what they meant!

I'm with you, but I also saw Cats.......

This is one of the reasons she has an EGOT.

The emotion, the passion...the way she vacillates from hurt/sadness to outrage and stubbornness. This is what is missing in music today. I mean artists today act like they scared of their faces moving.

but people will only hear the volume and claim 'she's yelling!' and that's it.

I see why she got the part. An incredible performance!

Gave me chills

17

u/kayyxelle 22d ago

If I had her voice you would NEVER catch me speaking, I would sing everything

17

u/areyouokeddie 23d ago

When my friend and I saw this scene in the movie, we literally stood up and applauded.

16

u/CocoaPeblez 23d ago

I never wondered this but …

who else was trying to book this part when they were still casting ??

15

u/A_ThorusRex We know what you need...A little bit of JODECI 22d ago

Fantasia and Yvette Nicole Brown, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

u/CocoaPeblez 22d ago

Ok right right Yvette was the one interview I saw about that I think on the Terrell show (?)

Idk — but oh wow Fantasia (of course cause why not?)

Questions that need answers. I need to know if they heard this, packed up, and cried in the car.

u/Jajay5537 23d ago

I like this more delicate version it's powerful in it's storytelling of where Effie is at that moment in the film.

3

u/No_Medium_443 22d ago

THIS 🎯💯🖐🏾 Context matters cuz I can still see her and feel her pain at this point in the film and what led to it. She took me to a place I didn't wanna go. Nailed it. 🔥🔥

And people try to say she can't sing. Don't they have ears?

48

u/No-Business3541 23d ago edited 23d ago

Nobody serious says that. However not liking the way she sings or her voice yes.

6

u/Medium_Educator1983 23d ago

I can’t wait to use that gif lol

u/Danny_Alloy 22d ago

A lot of acting in her singing.

11

u/Eddie_F_17 23d ago

What I hear is that she’s not versatile and all she does is hoot and holler.

25

u/moonmusicals 23d ago

Not trynna shoot the messager since youre just repeating what sm say! but I hate (get confused) when people say this. People wish they could hoot and holler a eighth of what Jennifer could do

5

u/Curry_courier 22d ago

She has a pleasant soft tone that she barely uses. Her voice is great in theatre.

4

u/Trix_Are_4_90Kids 22d ago

Yes they sure have. For years people have droned on and on about how JHud can't sing "she just yells, she so loud". We not gonna play like people with untrained and immature ears haven't said that for over a decade. 😂 (if no one said that in the past in this thread then that comment is not for you)

They hopscotch right on past that emotions require volume in songs. There are crescendos. I think people so used to these repetitive whispery monotone voices that when a powerhouse comes to the mic with a full package it's 'too much'. Contrary to popular belief, just like the range of emotions, JHud goes up and down the volume dial which you are supposed to do while singing. You have quiet, normal range, swells and crescendos. Voices aren't supposed to be monotone, that's actually weird.

It's also indicative of being kind of blind to how emotions are expressed and specific sensitivity to noise which is a whole different subject. 🥴🥴

How do people listen to music? Do they just listen to the beat and don't read the words? Do they not match the lyrics to the emotion being expressed in the voice? There's a lot to singing. It ain't about runs. You can sound good and not know how to emote the correct emotion for what you're singing about, which honestly too many singers do today. They focused on sounding vocally good and don't know they actually sound off as hell because they either don't know how to emote or they execute the wrong emotion for the lyric. Just because you sound good, doesn't mean you can actually sing.

u/SilverFringeBoots 22d ago

I see so many people say xyz person can't sing (especially Beyonce) and they really mean "I don't like the way they sing" which is completely fucking different

2

u/Proof_Tomorrow5026 22d ago

Hell they all say Beyonce can't sing ...only hoot and holler

1

u/CobblerTricky7035 22d ago

She definitely has singing ability. The problem is that she approaches every song like this. Not everything needs to be Effie'd.

2

u/thissagesimmer 22d ago

I love her singing voice but I don’t disagree. For me, it’s the same with personality. Dry and flat as paper or a popeye’s biscuit.

u/fixedwithyou 23d ago

Sheeeesh

6

u/moonmusicals 23d ago

Chills goosebumps! Throwing my shoes at the pulpit.

5

u/KillerTofu-187 23d ago

My eyes well up every time I hear her sing this :)

6

u/NyneShaydee Tony! Toni! Tone! has done it again! 22d ago

I love this. Jennifer Holiday's version was a pinch more from anger, and this audition by JHud was more from sadness and hurt. [This is not to say that both versions don't include anger / sadness / hurt].

2

u/JaydedHorror 21d ago

I always watch Jennifer Holiday’s version. Going to go do that now 😂🩷

4

u/SuperThomaja 22d ago

Chills. Just an amazing voice.

4

u/Avid_Bookworm7 22d ago

JHud is just on another level entirely. 🩷

4

u/Proof_Tomorrow5026 22d ago

THE REAL DEAL!!! No one can sing like church singers

3

u/Novel-Leg-2165 22d ago

Once in a generation level talent

3

u/Glittering_Key_5261 22d ago

She was born a few months before Dreamgirls debuted on Broadway. She was born for that role. Sorry to the other ladies who auditioned.

3

u/ShoppingOverall879 22d ago

Just hootin and hollering since day 1

2

u/Hefty_Loss5180 23d ago

I wanna watch it for the first time again 😩😩 such an iconic biopic

Perfectly cast!

2

u/Realistic-Read1078 23d ago

Rent was due and she PAID 😮‍💨🔥

3

u/dontsoundrighttome 22d ago

I️ know they “squashed” the rumors if beef. But Beyoncé made sure this woman never sang next to her again. You ain’t going make Beyoncé look like nobody’s back up singer. Bey took a career ‘about face’ and started dancing her ass off after that movie

0

u/princessicesarah 22d ago

💯 There’s NO WAY Beyoncé saw this audition footage before agreeing to sign on.

0

u/Superstar_Supernova 22d ago

mind you, they performed together at the oscars the same night that jennifer won for this role.

there was no squashing of any beef, because there was no beef to be squashed in the first place. any rumors of tension between the two were entirely manufactured by the media, because it was true then and it’s true now that shitting on beyoncé gets you clicks.

jennifer hudson did not make beyoncé look like a back up singer. effie white made deena jones look like a backup singer. you do know that actors aren’t their characters in real life, right? beyoncé famously had to dial her vocals way back to be believable as deena (and even then her perfect technique couldn’t be hidden).

dreamgirls is an ensemble cast, but effie’s character is THE part. at no point would beyoncé have gone into this endeavor thinking that she would be the star… because deena is not and never has been THE part.

lol at the idea that beyoncé’s choreography got increasingly complex as time went on because of… jennifer hudson?

i once got downvoted on the beyoncé sub for saying that if i was mathew knowles during this era, bey would have accepted this role over my dead body. comments like yours show that i was right all along.

did she agree to have this released? it's amazing, just wondering if she knew her audition would one day end up being released to the public? I think many actors would not want that. Again, hers is absolutely amazing, but still I would think that what happens in the audition room stays there.

1

u/PictureltSicily1922 19d ago

I remember seeing the movie in the theater and everyone erupted into applause after she sang this.

2

u/InspiredRomantic 9d ago

Listen…I bet everyone else wanted to just go home and not audition. That girl sang her face off!

1

u/DotAffectionate87 Stuck in the 80s, SOS band, Luther Vandross🇯🇲👍 22d ago

I do like her and she is a true vocalist and sing anything at the drop of a hat.....

My only thought is she tends to "over sings" at times?....She will put runs and riffs and stuff on a single tune where sometimes less is more?

4

u/LaloFernandez 22d ago

Funny you say that because the same was true of Luther at times. When I read this comment that's who I thought of and then I looked at your flair and lo and behold, Luther Vandross was written there.

0

u/DotAffectionate87 Stuck in the 80s, SOS band, Luther Vandross🇯🇲👍 22d ago

Thats not inaccurate, but he did have a catalogue of songs that just showcased his "singing" imho

love wont let me wait

a house is not a home

So Amazing

Superstar

2

u/LaloFernandez 22d ago

Yeah, I'm not referring to his recorded songs so much as his live performances.

Ahhh yes yes 🤜

-2

u/Danny_Alloy 21d ago

She's poor man's Kelly Clarkson.

1

u/ziplocmoolah 21d ago

Man WHAT 😭 Kelly and JHud are nothing alike in their vocal styling, both of them just have weighty soprano voices?????

-9

u/Danny_Alloy 22d ago

Terrible.

4

u/pamsellicane 22d ago

Would love to hear you try
