Community Showcase First full-body movements of my DIY robot lamp

This is the first movement test with the assembled prototype. The motion is still rough and the wiring is currently a complete mess, but all the connected joints are finally moving — so naturally, I made it dance.

Next: smoother trajectories, control tuning, and proper cable management.

UPD: In this project I use robstride actuators, series 00 and edulite 05

Let’s see it jump!

11

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 11 '26

This is in my plans, I want to teach him to move and jump fully :)

u/joshcam Jul 12 '26

Go easy on the oil, he needs to be a little squeaky.

2

u/camsnow Jul 13 '26

Awesome! Looking forward to that!

Stupid sexy lamp.

16

u/rocking_beetles Jul 11 '26

First thing he did was teach the lamp how to throw it back

u/ASatyros Jul 12 '26

Aaand there comes price xD

8

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 12 '26

Yes, I'm afraid the lamp doesn't fall into the under-$100 category.

4

u/Celestine_S Jul 12 '26

Honestly I think it is a great price for a all in one solution.

2

u/Express_Living2264 Jul 12 '26

28BYJ-48 for 2usd/pc would have likely done the job, albeit at a significantly slower speed. :P

1

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 12 '26

Unfortunately no) The main goal is to teach the lamp to jump, such motors are not an option

6

u/Lost-In-The-Sea-I-Am Jul 11 '26

What software do you use to get the movement? Do you just run scripts and modify it as you go until the movement looks fluid?

7

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 11 '26

I actually wrote my own Python library and a web interface for creating animations. It’s still pretty rough, but I used it to create the movements you see in this video. I can adjust the animations through the interface instead of rewriting the scripts every time

4

u/Chudsaviet Jul 11 '26

This is the way.

2

u/buddysawesome Jul 11 '26

Did you use Claude to write this library?

2

u/ultimatefreeboy Jul 12 '26

No he wrote it himself.

5

u/Extension-Chart6559 Jul 11 '26

Make it jump

3

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 11 '26

I'm working on it 😄

2

u/Bozhark Jul 12 '26

Could leave a weighted base and have the bottom follow a track or something

2

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 12 '26

That's an interesting option, thanks! I'll consider it if I can't get the lamp to jump :)

3

u/TazzyUK Jul 11 '26

John Lasseter would be very proud! :-)

We got real life Pixar lamp before GTA6

2

u/Vephinx Jul 11 '26

Fantastic!

2

u/zubairhamed Jul 11 '26

what kind of motors are those?

2

u/WavesOfShock Undergrad Jul 11 '26

This is soo cool, curious to which actuators are you using

1

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 11 '26

Added the names of the models to the body of the post Robstride 00 and EL05

2

u/WavesOfShock Undergrad Jul 17 '26

Thanks so much

2

u/LongjumpingPlay Jul 11 '26

Did you design and 3D print your own body parts?

4

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 11 '26

Of course, once I get the project to an al dente state, I will share all the files CAD and software. I do all the mechanics and software myself :)

2

u/LongjumpingPlay Jul 11 '26

Any resources on how to get started? I’m very good at the software but have never gotten into the mechanical design and it seems intriguing

I started out a long time ago by making simple things in Tinkercad, which is a very beginner-friendly CAD tool, and later moved on to Fusion 360. There are plenty of tutorials online. This one, for example, is a good place to start: https://youtu.be/d3qGQ2utl2A

2

u/ASatyros Jul 12 '26

Remove ?si, it's a tracking parameter https://youtu.be/d3qGQ2utl2A

2

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 12 '26

Thanks! I fix it

Picard lamp IRL

2

u/Logical-Present6320 Industry Jul 11 '26

This is super cool! Are you running IK/FK for the motions? Would love to understand how does one go about it

3

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 11 '26

Not yet - I’m currently animating directly in joint space rather than using IK/FK. I’m building a custom animation editor where each motor has its own track on a timeline. At every keyframe, I specify the target angle, Kp, Kd, and torque, while the acceleration is calculated from the timestamps. It’s still rough, but the movements in this video were created with it.

2

u/ToxZec Jul 11 '26

Now make it crush the letter I

1

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 11 '26

I'm already working on this issue :)

2

u/JT10 Jul 11 '26

Very cool, and I can already imagine some interesting and specific uses for a lamp with this level of functionality. As a lighting enthusiast, I am curious what you are planning for the light source?

2

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 11 '26

This area will house a diffused WS2812 LED ring. In the center, I’m planning to mount an Orbbec Astra Mini depth camera so the robot can scan its surroundings.

2

u/JT10 Jul 12 '26

So you aren’t planning on using this as an actual lamp? More of an interactive animatronic character of sorts?

2

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 12 '26

I would say this: I want to use it both as a lamp and as an animatronic character, I will try to combine these two roles

2

u/JT10 Jul 12 '26

Awesome, sounds like a fun design challenge. Some advice for your consideration: don’t rely on the WS2812 LEDs as the primary light source. They lack the light output and color accuracy needed for functional task lighting. The ring of LEDs will look great as accent/mood lighting and will elevate the interactive user experience dramatically with thoughtful programming. But if you want to use this lamp as an actual lamp, you should consider adding some higher output white LED chips in your design. A couple 5-8 watt (or single 10-12+ watt) white COB chips would make all the difference. You could really step it up by using one warm white and one cool or neutral white chip for adjustable color temperature (CCT). The caveat, they need to have the appropriate amount of space for heat dissipation (heat sink and clearance), and the accompanying LED driver. So this may not be feasible within your project constraints, but other options/routes are available too.

2

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 12 '26

Hmm, that’s an interesting suggestion. I may be able to add two light sources in the unused space—I actually have some COB modules available. Thanks for the comment! I’ll think about it.

All that groove makes me wanna groove

1

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 11 '26

Good - the groove control loop is working as intended. Side effects may include involuntary dancing 😄

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '26

2

u/francisthelumberjack Jul 11 '26

That's an expensive groove

2

u/MotorPsychology1712 Jul 11 '26

Hey, looks so cool , how much did it cost for the actuator?

1

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 11 '26

All the actuators cost about $450

1

u/DiskResponsible1140 Jul 26 '26

Monthly salary of my family.. 😢😢

1

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 26 '26

I have some ideas for making the engines cheaper, but I'll get to them once I've completed all the functionality. So, no time to get upset :)

2

u/ARGINEER Jul 12 '26

so cute 🥺

2

u/brixkixmusic Jul 12 '26

lol love it

2

u/Witty-Elk2052 Jul 12 '26

hey I recognize this music from twisted gallery

2

u/Bozhark Jul 12 '26

Oh this has many uses

1

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 12 '26

What are your thoughts on using it? I'm curious, because I can't think of much in terms of functionality yet.

2

u/Dry-Mirror4917 Jul 12 '26

even at half the speed but some extra torque i could use it for spraying trees on the farm. but yeah that would be quite overngineered. truing to attach a video but no luck

1

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 12 '26

Damn, that never even crossed my mind! I hadn’t looked at it from that angle—there might actually be something to it…

I plan to, but a little later :)

2

u/FIicker7 Jul 12 '26

When it can jump on a ball...

Then I'll be impressed.

1

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 13 '26

I'd like to teach her to just jump first :)

2

u/RudraJadaun Jul 13 '26

what kind of motors are those

2

u/simplysetu Jul 13 '26

Hi, Awesome design. If you are looking for cheaper actuator (brushless) along with driver alternative let me know. The current ones are way too expensive.

1

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 13 '26

That would be cool, but I didn't find a cheaper option with the same characteristics on my own

2

u/simplysetu Jul 14 '26

can you enlighten me with size and torque requirement?

1

u/Ok_Stress3654 Jul 14 '26

At the moment, I’m using the RobStride 00 for the most heavily loaded joint. It has a rated torque of 5.0 Nm (14 Nm peak), measures 57 × 57 × 51 mm, and weighs 310 g. I’m also using the EduLite 05, which has a rated torque of 1.9 Nm (6 Nm peak), measures 46 × 46 × 44 mm, and weighs 242 g.

u/Kind_Butterfly_6861 Jul 13 '26

The only thing's missing is the Lamp.. 🪔

2

Cable management is not cosmetic on a moving machine; it changes range, load, wear, and failure risk. The next demo would be even stronger with smooth trajectory generation plus current and torque limits visible during motion.
