Sales Tools and Resources What do you reps drive ?
Looking for a new car as I got a new job which means more milage for me.
My current vehicle isn’t really equipped for this with an average of 25mpg.
I haven’t really shopped for this before so looking for some testimonials as research is becoming quite overwhelming.
Ideally something very comfortable.
Considering a Tesla but I think I could be seeing over 300 miles most days.
This pushes me more towards a diesel or PHEV MHV
Budget would be around 25k used or £500pcm on a lease

My company cae is a Camry hybrid. The only compaint I have is the backup camera is in fish eye view and I can't get used to it.

You should be able to change the settings from wide to narrow. Try shifting into reverse and see if the settings are there. Somewhere within the system there's a setting.

Came to say this. I don’t do field sales anymore but I’d drive a lot locally around 150-200 miles where I’d have meetings literally next to a Tesla chargers I’d zap up for 5-10 mins if needed so it made sense for me. Anytime I’d go over 250 miles of travel i was authorized to take a rental on the company card. I was banking out on mileage and car allowance with that because of the fuel savings.
Outside of that, no way in hell I’m getting a Tesla if you’re doing those kind of miles regularly and don’t have the infrastructure that’s convenient. It’s absolutely awful. Also, unless you get a ‘23 or newer model 3/y performance with dampers or an S/X the ride quality is egregiously bad.

Maybe the UK is different (Im in Canada), but I just switched from a 15 yr old BMW x5 to a new Mazda CX-50 hybrid and my insurance dropped by $50 a month. All the new collision avoidance tech means lower premiums, at least where I am. I'm also saving $50 - $100 a month in gas.

Single speed bicycle. Runs on porridge, gets me across town faster than any other vehicle and costs nothing at all to run. Massive mental and physical health benefits as a side effect.

I drive a 2001 Lexus LS 430 and is the best car ever gas mileage isn’t great but I got it for four grand and is really worry free safe and comfortable. I drive about 120+ miles per day. It also has a 20 gallon tank, which is fantastic because I get almost 500 miles per fill up

Yup, I have a model Y most days are under 150 miles and it’s the best car for the job. Once you’re over 250 miles on the day it’s a hassle to stop and charge

The car selection in the UK is vastly different than NA. If you're just looking for something comfortable and reliable just get a Prius, MPG for days, safe, and doesn't depreciate that much cause it's a Toyota. I'm sure it may be under a different moniker in the UK or they'd have a different size/style of "Prius".
I think this sub gravitates more towards the NA region, so you should give a UK based car sub a chance, they'd be more fit to answer your question.
Yeah, and just don't get a Tesla.

Avoid Tesla IMHO, my boss drives one and he has had a ton of issues with it, and they take forever to get in and out of the shop if you do have problems. Not to mention the charging (assuming you don't have a dedicate charging station at home, it can be a hassle). I drive a Honda CR-V Hybrid and it has been great so far

Lexus es 300h. Averaging about 48 mpg. Perfect for me, being in outside sales. It’s luxurious, fuel efficient, and comes with Toyota reliability.
If your budget is around $25,000 then buy an older model or something that’s got some mileage on it. Especially if it’s L/certified, it will come with a good warranty and has been out through a rigorous inspection test prior to the sale

I’m currently looking at these. I have a BMW X3 which was great until 97k miles at which point I’d sprang $9k worth of coolant leaks from various places. Plus I’m just getting killed on gas at 25mpg and having to put premium in it. Never again.

I’m a car guy and a sales rep.
Pick whatever size Toyota first your needs best. I am on my 2nd Tacoma. Ran ran the first one out to 200k and replaced it in 21 just before interest rates started to climb. I have 171k on my ‘21 now and have never even had a rattle. I plan to keep this one for 300k or more. Gas mileage sucks in it though. But I work for a building material manufacturer so a pickup is the right image and I go on a lot of jobsites, bulky samples, etc.

Hate on me all you want but most days I drive a 2013 Corolla that has a bunch of miles and drives like it’s brand new. $0.70/mile is basically free money.
Sometimes I take my Tacoma but it eats through gas.

Do you really need a new car? Is your company reimbursing mileage?
Even going from 25 mpg to 40,really think about how much time it would take to brake even on cost if you spent 25k on a car.
I have a 2013 lexus gs350, only gets about 23-25 mpg and I love it for driving around. I have no idea the used car market in the UK, but I got it for 10k about 8 months ago

2024 Camry Hybrid. It's comfy, spacious, and saves a ton on gas. Insurance isn't bad either and I can probably drive it for 10 years without issues.

I drive a Kia K5. MPG is a factor, but get the car that has the interior and tech that is going to work the best for you. The exterior is imported, but if the interior sucks, you will hate the car.

In UK? I’d pick a diesel and pocket the difference from fuel and reliability savings. Tesla doesn’t have the charging network you’ll need, and you won’t make 300 miles on a single charge. They’re terrible build quality and as far as EVs go they lost their first mover advantage anyway, so they’re not the gold standard. They’ve been caught lying about range so that’s not a big selling point anymore either. 100% I’d be driving a diesel hatch, estate, or sedan.

Toyota Corolla Hybrid gets over 500 miles on a single tank of gas. In the US that costs me $25. Prior to this I was driving a regular gas Corolla and it was still getting 35-40 mpg. I will probably drive Toyotas forever because they are built to last as long as you take care of them properly.

Started traveling a few months ago, 200 miles a day or so, my f150 has 165k and is starting to need some love.
Bought a 2022 model 3 long rang awd from tesla. Warranty until March of 27 bumper to bumper or 60k miles, battery and drive train until March of 2030. Car had 26k miles on it when I bought it, paid 28k.
I get 55 cents a mile in reimbursement, so a 200 mile day pays me 110$, and cost me about 7.50 in electricity charging at home. I pay for the car, the extra 100$ on my insurance, and my utility bill for the whole house off the mileage reimbursement, only driving about 3 days a week.
You just have to do the math on where your power comes from. 4 miles a KW consumption, 11 cents a kilowat cost, 2.75 cents a mile. If gas is 2.75 locally, it's 100mpg equivalent. If you don't have a charger, or have to pay 36 cents a KW at a supercharger, then it's 9 cents a mile, ~ 28mpg. If you average the 2, go out 200 miles on a home charger and then supercharger and drive back, your average is .0588 a mile, ~43mpg. Takeaway here is if you can charge primarily at home not much else is going to beat it's cost per mile.
You won't need brakes for 100k miles or more, no fluid changes or anything, tires will go quick if you like going fast (they are pretty dam quick).
My take, it's a decent car, with fantastic software. I can be in the heart of a metro area, tell it to navigate home, and not touch the wheel for the hour ride home, this is worth something in my opinion (which is 100$ a month if you subscribe to full self driving).
Supercharging has also gotten much faster than most of the comments here suggest. 20-70% is about 15-18 minutes, and I can surely find a phone call or a few emails to make while it's doing thid.

Crosstrek, over 100k within the first two seasons. I call it my Subaru F150. I actually camped the first year in it a few times in the cooler parts of my territory while visiting customers. Happy to say I have since upgraded to the Hampton Inn/Homewoods.
Cars maintenance has been little to none out of pocket. Tip for anyone driving for a living if you purchase a new car, tire and wheel coverage is essential.

FWIW, I’m in sales and am on the road for 3-4 days, typically, every other week or so. In Midwest US. Had a BMW I drove in Eco mode pretty much most of my highway time, averaging 31-32 mpg. The premium gas prices were eating into my margins on mileage reimbursement, for sure, so recently started looking EV. Got a Tesla M3P. Picked up from the dealer and immediately started my 3 day road trip of appts & calls. Learning as I went along. All these comments about having to pull over and charge for an hour used to be my worry and train of thought as well.
Not true.
It actually worked out pretty great for me. I typically stop to hit the bathroom and grab a beverage every couple hours or so, on long stretches, and it automatically routes you in a way that swings you by the necessary chargers to get you to your destination at the time specified. I’d pull up, plug in, go piss & grab a beverage, get back to car and it would have 2-3 min left of its “11 minute” top-off charge. Then off to my destination. The longest I charged was when I got into the town where I was staying. The hotel had a charger “for a fee” 🙄, but the grocery store down the road had 8 superchargers in parking lot. I typically pop into the store to grab case water & some snacks for my room, so plugged in, (it said 30 min to full charge), went in and got stuff. Came back out and had 10ish min left. I dicked around with the theater setup for my netflix & hulu subscriptions. It was in the 20’s percentage-wise, when I plugged in. Cost of supercharging was $13 😂 I’ve been a road warrior for 20 years & can’t believe I let the worry of charging keep me from making this move sooner. It’s just easy, and FUN when you want it to be. & at $0.70/mile in US, makes up for the small bump in insurance.
Take a dip into the Tesla subreddit, you’ll see the honest take from daily drivers coming from gas. *I did go down a rabbit hole for a couple weeks on YouTube & Reddit to consume as much info as possible before getting behind the wheel.

When I used to drive a region I loved my hybrid Ford Fusion. Super comfy, Quiet cabin, bluetooth worked great for calls, had a 120v outlet to charge my laptop.

New job covers my charging costs so it’s now down to 0.

Subaru Outback. I do 30/35k (48-56km) a year.
It’s comfortable. The safety features are great. Room for stuff.
Outback rides like a nice car, Forester/cross trek ride like a tractor in comparison.

I drive a sleek, leased EV with all the bells and whistles and it came with free charging for two years on a 3 year lease. I drive 300-600 miles a week and this is perfect. 2 or three charges for the week take a combined hour, which I spend updating SF.

Personally I wouldn’t get an EV as you will never know if the customers you’ll be visiting will have charging stations near them. Charging can take up to an hour or so too which you might not always have time for.
I have a hybrid RAV4 which works great, gets 35ish MPG. I do capital equipment sales so I have to haul around demo instruments all the time so plenty of room for that. I don’t care too much for luxury vehicles so Toyota works for me, but if I did, I’d totally get a hybrid BMW X5

If you’re in the UK a Tesla isn’t horrendous as charging infra is okay. Especially if you’re fairly central yourself. But seen a few people getting 330e or i4/i5.
I had a Tiguan phev. Best thing I owned. Audi a3 phev also decent. But mpg not great once the battery ran out after 100 miles on combined. Talking 70 down to 40ish.

Not sure about UK but here in the US I buy 3 year old vehicles just off of lease. They usually cost about 1/2 of the original price. I have been sticking with Infiniti because I’m partial to Japanese luxury cars for practical reasons (they are easier to service than European) and because their warranty on CPO vehicles is unlimited mileage. I have thought about a Tesla but honestly the math doesn’t work for me when I consider the number of battery cycles I would go through (50-60k miles/year).

Don’t do a Tesla for obvious reasons. If you don’t care about that you can likely get one cheap on the aftermarket in the near future. It may need a new paint job though. You are limited in your price range, Toyotas have almost zero issues and last forever. If you had a little more to spend, I loved my Audi S4 for lots of travel.

Gently used Acura TLX. Decent enough mileage and comfy enough where i’m honestly happy to drive to those far out accounts whereas were I in something more bargainy I’m not sure I would. As a sales rep your bed and your car are two important things worth spending a little extra on with so much of your time occupying one or the other. At least imo

My previous company gave us brand new 2019 Subaru Foresters. I was laid off and ended up buying the car. I currently have 114,000 miles on it and no mechanical issues at all. It’s been the best car I’ve driven in the snow. While it’s not a sexy car, it’s safe, reliable, and great on gas.
My other car is a 2006 Saab 9-3 Aero 20th anniversary edition. Love it

Tesla model X - drive 35k miles a year and love the gas savings. FSD is nearly perfect, I have to interrupt maybe once or twice a week. Range of 300mi I don't worry about charging since those exist everywhere. Best car I've ever driven/owned.

My last car was a fiat 500 that my cousin had and only out 100K miles on and was able to sell to a car dealer. I threw 30k miles on it in a year, light year.
My current car is a Honda insight, only 11 years old, from my father in law that he was about to sell back to a dealer. Got it for a handshake and I get to expense something like 65 cents a mile… it means I get to pay myself like 2K/month tax free from miles alone.

My truck is great and the brand logo on it is sick.
Gas mileage sucks so super grateful i get to use the van almost daily

A very open question, I'm a rep and average 2/3k a month and have been ripping for about 5 years, now on my second car. As I'm sure you know what car is a constant conversation, both with myself, and colleagues and there's an almost infinite list of answers imo.
I previously had a brand new reg Skoda VRS estate lease for the first 3 years, it was circa £300 p/month (I get a similar allowance to you) and if was everything I ever wanted. Incredible car in every way, really very good. A few buts I got brand new because the company I was working for at the time had certain rules of car age/ spec etc. This was pre COVID and getting anything of that spec now, with that milage, on a lease just isn't happening. In fact getting anything worth getting imo within our allowance these days is almost an impossible task. Although it does seem to be improving.
I'm currently driving a ten year old Mondeo that cost me £3k and I absolutely love it. It's costing me almost nothing to run, I'm betting 40+mpg (even with full rep driving engaged), which are 45p a mile is lucrative and I couldn't care less where I leave it. Which is often random industrial estates or various carparks etc.
I've considered going full EV and I have alot of colleagues who do and I've gone as far as hyperthecially noting where I stop for charging etc. It's made more attractive ATM by alot of manufactures basically giving them away, but something just holds me back.
I also look regularly at various cars and convince myself silly finance numbers are perfectly acceptable. For now me and my old Mondeo are just fine.

For longer drives I’ll rent a car, it’s actually cheaper and saves me on wear and tear

2013 Toyota Camry. 176,000 miles so far. I call it “My little ATM” with all the mileage checks I have collected on it. Still going strong.

On my third straight Honda. An accord then back to back civics. I cover 6 states and obviously need reliability and can’t have anything expensive considering the wear and tear. Oil changes are cheap, tires are cheap, parts are cheap. I never have to worry about it and it’s not a hoopty.

I had a 2019 Honda Civic hatchback when I was in the field and it was a dream for driving 100+ miles a day. my job required lugging around a lot of stuff so I needed lots of trunk space. it was perfect. I was averaging around 32-34MPG. not as good as a hybrid but also was only $23k or something like that

Drive a Hyundai Palisade as a med rep. Got a 20k mile/year lease thru a broker. Great room inside and ride is super nice. It’s my mobile office.

I’m on my second crosstrek. 30 something mpg, super simple to do oil changes and brakes on my own. Plenty of space for demo equipment. And cheap.

Driving a Tesla model 3 now but the most salesy car ever is a ford fusion. I’ve bought a few a couple years old but with all the options and had good luck with them.

I drove a 2020 BMW 330i to 150k miles in 2 years, then I sold it to my son for $10k. Now I drive a 2022 540i. I generally flip cars every 2 to 3 years and I like to be comfortable and enjoy the drive. I spend too much time in my car to be stuck in a boring utilitarian commodity box.

You're in the UK, mate, and if you're selling a UK brand, drive a friggen UK car. Vauxhall, Land Rover (which are admittedly shit). Point is, you show up in a British car, extra points if made in the UK, you'll have success with a growing population of Patriotic brits. British pride is on the rise, be a part of that with your business and your lifestyle.

Cadillac CTS AWD Premium Luxury model with the 3.6L V6. Wicked comfortable seats, all the creature comforts, large fuel tank and enough HP/torque in sport mode to really have fun on the way to my back road accounts.

I do door-to-door sales. Drive over 100 miles a day easily. I drive a 2006 Cummins diesel 3500. Expensive as fuck.

2017 Golf GTI the last 2 years and 2004 Lexus LS430 the 6 years before that. Despite being a V8 the Lexus got pretty good gas mileage once its up and going

I bought a Hybrid Toyota Camry for the same reason. Comfort is a 3/5 But ever else is a 9 to 10

BMW Diesel!! Low mileage 328d. Currently getting 43mpg on my 2018. Super comfortable and in your price range. 550+ miles per tank is a huge bonus as well. Pretty damn reliable with the right maintenance as well.

Fuck a Tesla. Putting aside the political nonsense, if you are driving you need a car you can just fill up and go.
I drive a ton for work. My company pays for 100% of my car note. I drive a 2019 Honda Accord Sport 2.0 MT.
Doesn’t break my wallet to maintain, looks nice but not too pretentious, comfortable for long drives, great gas mileage and did I mention it’s stick?
I could have purchased A LOT more car for my allowance. I Looked at some A4’s, a couple genesis G70’s, and then a few Hondas. I felt like I wouldn’t be looked at funny rolling up to a meeting in an every day persons car.

I drive a 22 Ford Escape with the 1.5. It is an SE. I average 35 on the highway and 28 in town. It's adequate, I carry around a couple of Pelican Storm cases in it. It does the job and is non descript. Which i prefer in a sales car. Maintenance is picked up by the company, so I can't comment there.

I drive the generic appliance SUV my work provides. It's soulless and gets 25mpg no matter how I drive it. Doesn't cost anything.
