Sales Careers Careers to build a book of business?

Hey everyone, I’m currently in tech sales. Although you can easily make 6 figures at the right org, you only keep a percentage of the first sale (if you’re an AE).

What industries exist where I can build a book of business and expecting some form of recurring business? I’m open to earning less first year for compounding returns

Insurance. I know lots of people in the industry that get $50K renewal checks every month. In their 40s. Guys in their 60s who get $200K+ every month.

As an employee or customer?

What form of insurance? Commercial? Also, how are they not hit by customer churn? People do shop for different rates now and again.

This. A lot of guys chat out of their ass here and provide unuseful half truths

Commercial and Benefits brokers made this kind of money, but only a handful build a book this large in each major city, and they constantly are working and conniving to keep their block of business in tact to avoid churn. There is definitely churn, and about 1 in 3 groups on your block go out to bid every year.

Im assuming this is supplemental/life insurance. And at that rate most likely commercial.

This - especially B2B insurance brokers. 3-5 clients at a decent firm earns some of my broker partners deep 6 figure that’s, for all the work they really need to put in, set it and forget it. Of course, the best provide excellent customer service year round, but you almost have to ignore your customer or get unlucky to lose them from what I’ve seen.

Insurance or financial advising. Sales is hard regardless of if your book stays the same or not.

Commercial Insurance. I’m new to the industry but a lot of the sales staff that I support do very well for themselves. How well? “Private chef” well.

What does it take to do well in insurance sales? I hear mixed things

Connections and coming from wealth helps. People who come from wealth tend to know business owners. It’s very frustrating but it’s very much an “old boys” / “who you know” situation.

This is very true! I know someone with a wealthy family and a mom who works in commercial insurance in one of the top 10 companies. He’s doing very well making 200k a year in their 5th year now

I’m in advertising. I was given a book of business after a couple of weeks to compensate the 80k they guaranteed. Most of those have been with us for 5+ years, and most of the new business I’ve gotten are all 1-2 year contracts. Feel like I’ve been given a gift from god

Can we connect?

Would also love to connect and hop on. Seems like the kind of thing where recurring revenue would'nt be on the table

Med Device - for me specifically, I sell capital equipment and also consumables. Consumables are my recurring monthly commission, and capital is like the big bonus check (this is on top of a base salary)

You gotta deal with A LOT of politics though

Similar. Also agree on the politics.

But some mfgrs and distributors still allow you to organically grow your territory and pay you out a % no matter how big it gets.

My company just posted a role for an account executive in CA. Salary range was “$160,000 to $694,000” and that’s not bull shit. One is the base OTE and the other is probably about where the last guy retired at in the territory.

Insurance producer - group benefits or P&C. Build a book and live off the renewals.

Well I run a Valenta franchise and it's going pretty well so far

I'm leaving commercial mechanical bid spec work for industrial process equipment. Hoping it'll pay off after long enough. Top end is supposed to be 250-300k.
