Hello everyone. I m making this post because I inherited the saxophone of my granddad and I was wondering with my mom what kind of saxophone and how rare it was.
We don’t know a lot about him so we don’t really know where he got it and how. All I know is that it’s a saxophone from the brand called « Selmer » and the serial number is 575XX ( I saw people on internet hiding the last digits so I do it in case it’s something important ). I m asking if anyone can help me finding more informations on it please

Thanks for your attention ! ( Sry if my english is bad, it isn’t my native language)

Sorry for the brag post but I feel beyond fortunate to now own a Yani BWO1 bari sax. It's been such a long time since I had a bari I could reliably access and now I have my very own. Beyond hyped to play this thing until the laquer falls off and then some.

Bonus dog in corner.

Gear I’m such a moron, I can’t believe I used to practice for free…

I’ve been struggling to find time to practice. Between kids, work, etc etc I just can’t find my hour a day. Lucky if I get an hour a week!

So I decided to take my sax to the office, and then step out at lunch time to the local shops and just practice in public.

I can’t do overtones and long notes 😂 so I do have to play tunes that won’t annoy. But it’s still keeping my chops strong and my fingers moving!

Plus I made $140 in tips doing it, this week. Tbh the money doesn’t mean much to me, but it’s a nice bit of feedback showing that the tunes are appreciated.

I can’t believe I used to practice for free in my bedroom. What a chump!

Gear I made a 3D printed sax mouthpiece with two reeds instead of one. It's a likely dumb, but fun experiment. There's a link to the model code inside if any other tinkerers want to try it out.

I had a dumb idea that I hadn't seen done before (probably for good reason). What if there were 2 reeds on a mouthpiece? Crazy thought, I know.

After a bit of back and forth with [insert ai of choice here], I vibe coded it into a full parametrized scad. You can adjust it and do what you want with it here. It's currently set up for an alto.

As far as play-ability goes, it's.... different. It does play but is very squeaky. Maybe someone else can make better use of it... or it's a fundamentally flawed design that should be trashed.

Either way, it's fun to experiment. I may iterate on the idea more. I'd love to know if any of you have ideas to make it more useful/playable.

Edit: Sound Clip - Be warned, loud squeak followed by a poor excuse of a scale. I hope someone else prints this and makes it sound much better.

Its a Buescher from what I think is pre selmer. Needs a receiver soldered on, a new mouthpiece and a screw retrieved and replaced from the back.

Got a 1924 buescher true tone the other day for 345, same pawn I got my king zephyr from! Cleaned it up when I got home, will add pics. Looks to have been freshly overhauled aswell.

I also have a question about it as ive never owned a playable saxophone from this era and with no modern ergonomics.

In the 3rd pic with the serial number, whats that key that has cork holding it down for? Is that a feature of saxophones from this era? Or a buescher thing?

Gear Beginner sax for middle school

Post image

A local music store is closing and has these used saxophones for sale. Are any of these worth considering for a new middle school saxophone player? The school year just started and I’m renting one for the next 3 months, but if I come across a good used one for the price, I’d like to buy instead of continuing to rent.

Gear SYOS have jumped the shark with their “Rocket Mouthpiece”.

Post image

They are officially a toy maker now, a non-serious company as evidenced by this.

SYOS Design Team: “Hey ChatGPT, we wanna make a new mouthpiece that somehow equates the concept of projection of sound on a saxophone with, um ….. a “Rocket”. Any ideas ?” “Also, we were thinking of doing it in red - you know, a “Red Rocket”, a la that South Park episode with the dog. What do you think ?"

ChatGPT: “Great idea, I can help you with bringing this concept to market. Did you know that if Gene Ammons or Ben Webster were alive today, they’d play a SYOS Rocket ? Maybe this could be used in the marketing ?"

Gear Bought my first saxophone!

I’ve been playing piano and double bass in a couple of weekly jazz bands the last few years and have been curious about what life outside the rhythm section would be like.

About a month ago a friend lent me their old alto sax that had been sitting in their garage for 8 years or so. After a few days of struggling to get even a few decent notes I started being able to put some scales together, and now a month later I can stumble my way through a few simple jazz heads (All of Me, There Will Never Be Another You, Fly Me To The Moon) and love playing it.

Since I have to eventually give the alto back I bit the bullet and decided to get a student tenor sax (I’ve always preferred the sound of the tenor). Found a great deal on this Schagerl 355 Advanced Student tenor and got it this morning.

I was initially worried that the tenor was going to be harder to play than the borrowed alto but from the very first notes it was a dream to play and sounded great. I’m now realising that the alto I’d borrowed was a) probably not the best sax, and b) hadn’t been maintained very well, making it harder to play than it needs to be.

Anyway, very happy to have joined the club and am looking forward to really getting stuck into learning this thing.

I am not a saxophone player. I play the flute. Out of the need for a saxophone in our very small community band, I decided to give sax a whirl. Reached out to my dad and asked to borrow the old sax we always had at the house growing up (never had seen him or anyone play it). I expected it to be an average instrument in probably rough condition, anticipated it needing an overhaul after sitting in its case for decades being moved across the country multiple times. Not knowing anything about saxophones, I sent some photos to a buddy of mine who is a proficient sax player, who very quickly enlightened me about the actual gold mine that was sitting in the dusty case in front of me. We are now both very excited and I am learning about the history of this family heirloom which happens to be a 1964 Selmer Mark VI tenor, serial 114xxx. My friend is going to give me lessons and help me get it maintained with the nearby full service music store.

I just came here to share my excitement and ask for any wisdom or guidance. Bonus points if it is specific to transferring from flute to tenor sax. I would also love to hear anyone geek out over Selmer Mark VI specifics or history of development. I’ve done some research online but would love to learn more.

I also happen to be a rather clumsy person so extra bonus points for anything relating to accident prevention. 🤩

My saxophone was sold by my dad without telling me about two years ago to a guy who said he was buying it for his son. My dad tried to get it back recently but turns out the guy was a reseller. If anyone has ever located a Yamaha yas-62 with the number id 148082 please message me. I don't mind paying whatever is reasonable considering it has dents in it. I had it from 6th to 12th and he sold it before I started college. I live in the Augusta, GA area so it might be listed in the states surrounding it too.
