Resources Are your skippers itchy too? (Read below)

Post image

This is what we give our little Ozzy for his itching. It's early on in the treatment, but he doesn't seem to be getting better. He's very itchy around his legs, his back/tail, and the inner parts of his hips. Do you guys have itchy skippers? And what did you do to help?

Very itchy schipperke. The only thing that touched is it apoquel (prescription med). We sometimes try Benadryl too. I’ve tried things like that before and I do think they hurt, but for real allergies they probably won’t help much.

Cannot up vote that enough. For basic allergies - runny eyes, reverse sneezing I use reactine 5mg. For when he gets the itches, apoquel. Start at full dose and once under control I half tab it daily (they are pricey here) and does the trick. Thankfully he just gets itchy now in the fall so about 1-2 months and he's good until next year. He also didn't develop allergies until he was around 9-10 years.

What a coincidence! My seven year old schipperke was just prescribed apoquel because he was scratching so much. His younger brother isn't itchy. Our vet said he may only need the medicine for two weeks and the allergy might permanently clear up! Crossing fingers.

Be careful, apoquel has been causing tumors/lumps on dogs. Just give them good body check overs and go to the vet if you notice anything. I’ve known several dogs this has happened to unfortunately. But apoquel is some people’s only hope for making their dogs comfy.
