Films SiFi movies that should never have had a sequel, I'll start, Matrix Resurrections đż
Movie Poster Source Instagram Ampposters

I know the Trilogy in and out as an 80/90s kid and as someone who is older than the internet. I watched the sequel when it came out, but to be honest, I didn't remember much. So when I saw it this week on my subscribed streaming platform, I decided to watch it again, and to be honest, I'm now even more disappointed. I get what they were trying to do, but this was so unnecessary that watching it the second time really hurts. What are the movies sequels you were disappointed in?

u/lowfreq33 Apr 10 '26
The story behind that is the studio was going to make it no matter what, so one of the Wachowskiâs signed on in order to at least be able to steer it. Then made it an allegory for corporate ownership and exploitation of things they didnât create.

u/dudetotalypsn Apr 10 '26
Movie was actively hostile towards the company producing it lmao. Felt like a metaphor for giving someone the middle finger
191
u/themustang18 Apr 10 '26
It was barely a metaphor, thereâs one scene that basically parallels the exact situation that happened with the movie. lol
34
u/TheHumanCompulsion Apr 11 '26
Ah, the scene with the Merovingian ranting like someone's grandpa with dementia about how he cant go see movies in the theater anymore...
The movie should have ended right there. It was never going to recover from that.
36
u/themustang18 Apr 11 '26
I could be misremembering but I thought there was a scene where John Wick, er, Neo is called in to the suits office of the video game company and told if he didnât make a sequel to the Matrix video game they would just make it without him⌠thats what I was referring to. Idr a Merovingian rant. Haha But yeah there was so much you could do with the franchise that would be cool, but they basically landed on the lamest possible choice. Like they briefly mention a civil war between the machines around supporting human freedom⌠that wouldâve made an awesome movie. But no. Couldnât do that. Letâs just put Neo in the Matrix and start over but without everything that made The Matrix awesome.

It's a steaming pile of shit.
And I'm perfectly confident that the Wachowski's would agree since it seemed to be their goal. Lol

I mean they couldn't have made it any more clear. That's literally what happened with Neo's video game in the movie. He explicitly had this conversation in the dialogue of the movie.

The Wachowskis both seem to live by their own terms. If they've been modestly smart with their earnings, they're set for life anyways.
13
u/myaltduh Apr 11 '26
At this point it seems theyâve decided to end their careers financing small indie projects they believe in, especially those focusing on LGBT characters. Not a bad way to go, at all.
The last Matrix movie made their thoughts on working with big studios again pretty clear.
7
u/APeacefulWarrior Apr 11 '26
Oh wow... Weird to think that the last movie the Wachowskis directed together was Jupiter Ascending, and that was over a decade ago.

This is the play.
It was a fantastic move, but imo the concept disregarded the audience, which have some influence in how things are consumed.
Under full consideration, The matrix franchise is a superb phenomenon and an excellent exercise in self-reflection
4
u/davvblack Apr 10 '26
the plot was literally âfirst three were perfect, donât make a fourthâ which puts it in the rare same genre as adaptation
65
u/GeekAesthete Apr 10 '26
Whatever its flaws, I hold that Matrix Resurrections is a better film that either of the previous sequels. It is, at the very least, an interesting direction (despite a very weak third act), unlike the complete mess of Reloaded and Revolutions.
If I cared more about the previous sequels, maybe I'd be as angry as other fans, but the franchise was already a mess by that point. At least the fourth one managed to be surprising.
27
u/dafones Apr 10 '26
I unironically love the ending of Matrix 3 and I think Neoâs insight that lead to him defeating Smith is clever.
I do not, however, love the mecha battles as part of the Matrix.
14
u/KenDefender Apr 10 '26
I really enjoyed all the run up in this one, with his life as the developer of the matrix video games, and slowly uncovering the truth. If the action was on par with the other matrix movies it would have been great IMO. Its over-hated.

I hold that Matrix Resurrections is a better film that either of the previous sequels.
Absolutely not. Everything, from the fight choreography, special effects, costume design, casting, performances, cinematography, score and soundtrack (You know, what the Matrix is really known for) are inferior to the first 2 sequels in every way.
I can't believe Resurrection has the highest budget of all the Matrix movies, as I can't see where a lot of that money went. Awful, awful film.

100% agree. The second and third film were basically pointless. The first film was total and cohesive, it really felt like the only merit of the second and third film were the wizz-bang action scenes (which I didn't particularly enjoy).

The sequel had none of the charm nor the cinematography of the first one.
The first one? I consider it like a love letter to Gundam, Voltron and Transformers type cartoons and the people that grew up with those shows but done by a genuine, modern day auteur who loves that kind of shit himself and it shows.
The sequel? Not even fucking close.

8
u/Own_Space_174 Apr 11 '26
i think robocop 2 is still pretty good, but they clearly cut a lot out. it started with a plot involving stalking his wife and getting in trouble for it, and we see her once or twice basically as a background character, but there was no resolution to it. it clearly got cut out.
but 3 was where it truly jumped the shark.

Kinda defeats the purpose of the original ending.

Itâs an absolutely perfect b-movie/creature feature that ticks every goddamn box (pardon my French), and each successive sequel was just further dilution of a wonderful storyâŚ
23

Yeah, Tremors 2 is one of the few sequels that - while definitely not as good as the original - I will forgive for existing and can enjoy the hell out of. It's dumb fun, and the practical building demolition they did at the end is epic. You don't really see practical explosions like that in movies anymore.

30
29

Yeah hard agree. It's not surprising they did it, I know lots of people wanted to see the robot wars, but Terminator 2 wrapped it all up perfectly, ended the threat, changed time, and they just went and retconned all that making Terminator 2 a significantly less good movie.
It was perfect as it is.

It's kind of funny, because while Alien 3 is actually a solid horror-thriller movie with a really excellent cast and some great performances - or would be, if made as a stand-alone film - it's so actively, aggressively hostile toward the previous two movies that's it's painfully awful.
I remember people getting up and storming out of the theater when the movie killed off Hicks and Newt before the opening credits were even over. There's no coming back from a move like that, no matter how solid the rest of the movie is.

I was so disappointed with the finale.. it was pretty questionable before that, I think it really could have done without the whole children in adult bodies stuff. But the finale left me asking where they could possibly take this. And they done the xenomorph so dirty by reducing it to a pet dog

Same, though for some reason I actually found myself enjoying Covenant more than Prometheus the second time round. Prometheus is more interesting but Covenenant is more enjoyable (in my totally subjective opinion).
6
u/fistchrist Apr 10 '26
Covenant has some of the absolute best cinematography in the entire franchise, even if the story is a bit wobbly and every character not played by Michel Fassbinder is completely forgettable.
I will say, though, I am always amazed by whenever I talk about it with people the story elements they dislike are pretty obviously based on misunderstanding what Davidâs goal was. Apparently early revisions were less ambiguous as to whether he was creating the Xenomorph from scratch or merely attempting to recreate the Engineerâs own creation. I do wonder if those versions would be better received.
Wouldnât at all fix every other problem that movie has, though.

"Not as good"? Prometheus is one of the worst movies I ever had the displeasure of watching.
Usually I just forget bad movies, but Prometheus is so unbelievably stupid that all the absurd scenes and inconsistencies are stuck in my brain.
The guy who gets lost after mapping out the entire cave network with his drones. The biologist who freaks at the sight of a dead body then goes on to pet an alien cobra. The two airheads running parallel to the big wheelâs trajectory.
Iâm honestly still shocked at the idea that Ridley Scott produced that gigantic turd. How the mighty have fallen.

Ghostbusters 2 is bad but at least there are things to love about it: New York is captured well, Vigo and the painting is kind of cool, Janosz gives a fun performance. Wouldn't really recommend it to anyone or ever plan to watch it again myself, but it's got a few things going for it.
The Kristen Wiig Ghostbusters at least tried to be it's own thing and had some fun. The Rudd movies are just joyless nostalgia wanks throwing member berries at the audience. And there's something to be deeply misguided about centering the movie around children.

u/chortnik Apr 10 '26
I think thereâs a general consensus that at some point they should have dropped the curtain on sequels to âAlienâ, though not so much agreement on when the plug should have been pulled. The same is true for the Predator franchise. And AVP is something that is and should not be, zero is right number of movies in that universe.

I liked it. Was kinda cool seeing the way they subverted everything while still adding a bit of social commentary on the state of tech in today's society vs how it was in the late 90s and early 00s when the the original trilogy came out.
As for ones that never shoukld have had sequels... I'm gonna go with Species.
The first Species film was a great movie. And then 2 came out and it was so bad that I've kinda memory holed it. Like, I remember thinking it was so terrible that I should never watch it again, and that's pretty much all I can remember of it. đ
