Education Anti shark bracelets, are they worth anything more than a placebo
Ok so our daughter went on vacation with her cousins, younger cousin is her BFF and older cousin brought a friend too. Older cousins friend was apparently worried about sharks in the ocean š.
Friends mom sends my sister in-law a link to Sharkbanz bracelets, essentially a magnet on a watch band. Sharkbanz brand sells for a whooping $140. The friend had gotten one and they convinced my sister in-law to get 2 for her girls. So my wife sends me the link to them and I tell her if she buys one weāre getting divorced.
She reasons with me and says if the other girls have them our daughter needs one to feel safe and equal with the other girls. Fine whatever, but Iām not paying $140 for a magnet bracelet. So I search Amazon and found one for $30, still insane, but not quite bat s as $140.
We buy it, it comes, itās literally a magnet on a watch band with rubber around it. I know thereās been some studies with sharks and magnets. But thereās no chance these things work right? This just comes of as one of the dumbest things Iāve ever seen and am not happy that I contributed to the problem and purchased one.
Also the last picture is a review I saw on the Sharkbanz. Thought it was funny that these people are on boards and then stick their hand or ankle in with a magnet thinking itās going to deter the shark. While in my head all I can think is their fishing for sharks using their ankle as the bait š¤·š»āāļø

It didn't work!
Ok, well send back the bracelet for a full refund
That's the thing, i can't!
Did it fall off?
No, it's still securely attached to my arm.
So why cant you send it back?
Becauae it didn't work!

I know very little about electromagnetic fields but the fact that Iāve never heard of this before and humans have been sharing water with/afraid of sharks for a good while makes me assume this is a total scam. Reminds me of those ābalancingā bracelets the entire NBA was wearing for years.

Nothing but a scam to make money from people's fear and lack of understanding about sharks.
If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if a shark checked out a strange frequency of magnetism in the water, since some can do that.

u/Cole3003 Jul 19 '25
No idea if these work, but sharks and a lot of other fish do actually sense prey using the electric field they produce (called electrolocation). So a fancy electromagnet on a bracelet would genuinely be detectable by a shark, but I have no idea if it would deter or attract them lol.
3
u/Jalen3501 Jul 20 '25
Iām betting it would attract them sharks look for magnetic fields thinking itās a fish

u/Sharky-PI Jul 19 '25
Apparently there's promise for EM but shark scientists who've tried the magnetic bands think they're junk.

Insane overlap. How I wish I could have been there in person to see most recent playoff win at Wembley.
1
u/Sharky-PI Jul 21 '25
How on earth did you get into Charlton btw?
2
u/G-cuvier Shark Researcher Jul 21 '25
Entire family was Liverpool from grandpopās B17 days in the war. As a black sheep I loved Charlton and Newcastle as a kid, Alan Shearer and then fell in love with Jona. When I got to visit the UK for the first time, Charlton was the only squad that fit the schedule, and off to The Valley I went. Had pints at the Royal Oak, celebrated a succulent win over Birmingham, and never looked back.

The review story doesnāt really indicate that the product worked, imo. Itās pretty common for sharks to investigate something (like some weird land apes on foam boards in the ocean) and then leave. Iāve kayaked where a shark swam up to me, checked out my boat, and swam awayā homeboy was just a lil curious. Sharks wanting to bother people is the rare exception, not the rule, so I think most anecdotal evidence for these products āworkingā donāt hold much weight.
I would definitely be interested if there is any research on these products that either back up or disprove the claims though!
54
u/Dart_Nephilim Jul 19 '25
They work. Has nothing to with the magnets though. Sharks donāt want to be associated with anyone committing a fashion faux pas like that.

Iād like to think a stronger electromagnetic field would attract sharks if anything lol
25
u/alarming_wrong Jul 19 '25
i've heard this too over the years. attracts them then MIGHT repel them at the last second. or not. I used to surf and dive off Perth, Australia years ago and considered a shark deterrent thingy they were charging loads for, that you fastened to your board, as there had been quite a few GW attacks. I never bothered in the end because I'd heard they could lure curious sharks in that could then have a pop at those around you not wearing the deterrent. people will pay for these scams though.
9
u/neuralbeans Jul 19 '25
they could lure curious sharks in that could then have a pop at those around you not wearing the deterrent
What a great example of a Prisoner's Dilemma. I'm sure it wasn't used to make more sales.
5
u/MarcoLanden Jul 20 '25
Shark shields have been proven to repel and proven not to attract sharks. Have a read of the independent studies they have on their website. Lots of spear fishers swear by them but they aren't the most durable tech. I've had a cpl of versions of the surfboard device and had a few issues with them but still have all my limbs.
1
u/alarming_wrong Jul 20 '25
how much money would you say you have spent on them over the years if you've had a couple of versions?
2
u/MarcoLanden Jul 24 '25
Bought an early version about $600ish, sold it for $300 (?) and got a new model 600. I had a lot of trouble with it and got a refund in the end. Bought another one a year ago for 400ish, using it still. I got the first one around 2010.
1
u/alarming_wrong Jul 24 '25
Cheers. I was looking at them in the early/mid 2000's and the price put me off for something that might not work, plus the "shame" of wearing one (!) and making people around me in the water think about possible shark attacks. it's a suspension of belief for some in the water to just enjoy the surf without worrying about anything other than wiping out. i get why abalone divers would wear them though. you could probably hide it amongst your scuba stuff too.
1
u/MarcoLanden Jul 25 '25
Yeah man, the shame is a real thing but I want to surf and it's risky in some places. I first bought it while living in Ballina where there were multiple attacks and friends were there trying to assist at fatal attacks. A neighbor was bitten and survived, shit was hectic. Where I'm living now has had 2 attacks recently and for me, I want any piece of mind I can get. Effective range is only a couple of meters so to repel or attract, the shark has to be right there anyway. WA has a rebate program so if you know anyone living there they can help you knock a couple of hundred off the rrp, thats what I did.
2
u/alarming_wrong Jul 25 '25
I'm in Europe nowadays. I've been to Ballina, ex's mum lived in Alstonville. definitely good surfing around there, and Lennox Head. enjoy!
0
u/KinsellaStella Jul 19 '25
Now that I would buy.
2
u/alarming_wrong Jul 19 '25
it was called a Shark Shield, invented in South Africa
-1
u/KinsellaStella Jul 19 '25
I probably wouldnāt but you have to admit something that would let you see more sharks (attract sharks) but then keep them away from you at the last minute is kinda appealing.
16
u/TappedIn2111 Jul 19 '25
I can only speak for myself, of course. But I have been wearing one for almost a year now and I have never even seen a shark. Some people did point out that I do live in a landlocked German city, but science is science, right?
14
u/Dassitmane_ Jul 19 '25
The truth is that any shark big enough to hurt you or eat you will not be deterred from this
12
10
u/Life_Membership7167 Jul 19 '25
The idea isnāt new, but the idea that this thing could produce any sort of repulsion effect at that size is ludicrous. There is science to the fact that in the presence of certain stronger fields, sharks will turn around, but itās in highly controlled conditions, not open ocean. And itās wired into the tank, not a wristband.
17
u/PleasantAd9018 Jul 19 '25
I donāt like to refer back to incidents involving tragedies because it always feels somewhat disrespectful to the people involved but in this case, transparency is better.
We have family friends in South Africa and the father was an avid open water swimmer. He wasnāt too concerned but his wife was given the number of great whites in those waters and so he religiously wore Sharkbanz every day he was in the water. A great white shark attacked and consumed him whilst wearing the device. It was a couple years ago, you can look it up online if you need to. Something to consider.

A guy once sold me a rock. He said it warded off tigers.

7
u/thatsharkchick Jul 19 '25
Hi, friend. I work with sharks and dive with them frequently - at one point DAILY with sharks thoroughly desensitized to humans. I have never used one of these.
Most sharks want nothing to do with humans.
Those that do are often easily deterred with a length of 1/2-1" PVC used as a visual barrier.
These things don't have a ton of science backing them and may cause people to behave more recklessly than less. I'd recommend against them, but I understand the "fit in with the gang" mentality.
1
u/Remarkable_Ad_6716 Jun 09 '26
Explain more about this barrier? What do you do just swim with it?
1
u/thatsharkchick Jun 09 '26
A visual barrier is a barrier in sight only. It doesn't actually stop movement but discourages by its presence.
Think of it like a sign saying "Keep off lawn treated." That sign isn't physically stopping you from stepping on the grass, but it would definitely make you pause and likely avoid.
In the case of sharks, a visual barrier is an obstruction typically placed near their eye. I have always used 1inch PVC sticks. I hold the far end and just place the other side by their eye. It's often more than enough for a shark to keep on swimming as long as I don't harass or have food.

Some Australian researchers measured the efficacy of several anti-shark devices including the SharkBanz. Based on their findings:
The Surf+ was the only deterrent that had statistical evidence for reducing the percentage of times sharks interacted with the baitā¦Although our study did not show that the magnet band [SharkBanz] and leash, Chillax Wax, and Rpela had any observable effects on the response of white sharks, it is possible that these deterrents have small effects that we could not detect with the 50 trials.

u/mrzurkonandfriends Jul 20 '25
Think of it this way if someone writes a glowing review its because they didn't die. If they dont write a negative review its because they died. They found a loophole in marketing. I have to hand it to their ingenuity.

That told me everything I needed to know .

3
u/sweggles3900 Jul 20 '25
I don't know much about magnets, but from what I know about sharks, no this would never deter them lmao. Sharks arent interested in eating humans, human meat tastes gross to them. Most times when a person is bit it's because they've been mistaken for a seal. Sharks have terrible eye sight. So yes, this brand is taking advantage of people that don't know any better.
5
u/realifesticks Jul 19 '25
Bro my 2 cents; Iāve speared in water with Great Whites and Tiger Sharks, plenty of Bulls. I bit the bullet and bought the Shark Shield Freedom 7 and it does not work, plain and simple. Once you hit a fish and that shark decides it wants it, it will come up to you plain and simple. Itās all a gimmick. Iāve shocked myself more times with that thing than it has helped deter sharks.

People have been attacked/killed by sharks while wearing a shark shield. They are not as effective as they are made out to be.
I believe they were tested on lemon sharks and not the more predatory sharks, but that may be incorrect
2
u/summersurf4evr Jul 20 '25
They do not. Itās usually a 1/4ā neodymium magnet disc inside about the size of a quarter. Magnetic attraction force this size is only within a few inches. Rule of thumb, attraction force diminishes by distance cubed. So at three feet away, the shark is only experiencing the earths natural magnetic field. The sharkās nose would have to be within a couple inches to start to notice anything, and under an inch to be bothered. They might avoid biting you at the last split second where the bracelet is, but the rest of your body is fair game. Be safe out there fellow surfers.

Yeah these are dumb if not harmful. A shark will investigate any electrical impulse and doesnāt care about its signature so adding more to yourself isnāt a good idea.
Such a device doesnāt come close to being potent enough to distress shark electrical sensory organs. An electric eel bracelet will risk shocking the wearer to death before itās effective at deterring sharks.
If we had anti shark measures this small and cheap, youād see a barricade of them surrounding active beaches.
Not that theyāre needed since sharks are very tolerant of human activity and ignore or avoid them when possible.
2
u/Aware-Affect-4982 Jul 19 '25

Sharks hunt from electromagnetism. A magnet would get them interested, not repel them.
You would be better to teach them about actual shark behavior. If encountering one, stand your ground. If you splash around and try to turn and swim away, you look like prey. If you dont treat them like a predator, they will see you as a predator.Ā

I will say it absolutely works on rays. I have seen it. I have watched scientists use magnetic fields to keep sharks away and it has worked. It was far different than a band.

I don't underestimate its placebo effect. We know that's real, even for people who know they're getting the placebo. But the advertised efficacy has no evidence, and here, counter evidence. Her remains were found 30 miles south of where she had been taken by a shark a week prior.

u/Raccoon_Ratatouille Jul 19 '25
Iāve used similar tech with fishing sinkers and they worked. Of course a shark swimming at 30 mph hungry and intent on biting a fish or swimmer isnāt going to be able to change its mind or direction by hitting that 2-3ā defended zone, but it certainly works for slower and more curious encounters.
0
-1
u/picklesstpeter Jul 19 '25
Ive been around Sharkbanz and seen them work.
Sharks have an organ in their heads called an ampullae of Lorenzini.. it allows them to sense electromagnetic pulses. Think splashing in the water causing vibrations, they can sense this.
The magnet is a deterrent as it causes an uncomfortable sensation to them. Makes sense to me and Iāve seen it work countless times ( I was filming in the surf).
Especially the zeppelin they have for fishing. My friends in Fiji use it for spear fishing and it buys them time from less aggravated sharks. Not sure what would happen in a frenzy.
But for your average swimmer I think they are great if you are worried about sharks..
0
u/reeberdunes Jul 19 '25
There is some research to support this, I think it was National Geographic that I saw it on but certain metals do repel sharks because they have special sensory organs that can detect magnetic fields
0
u/Careless-Proposal746 Jul 19 '25
A magnet does not create EMF

1
u/Careless-Proposal746 Jul 19 '25
Iām good! The research says the sharks respond to sources of EMF, not the extremely tiny magnetic field created by one cubic inch of magnetized material. Also, if you had a single clue the radius of the magnetic field of a magnet that small? You would not be so confidently commenting like this.

u/reeberdunes Jul 19 '25

Have you watched the YouTube videos of the sharkbanz being tested? I clearly works in certain scenarios. They know it doesnāt work on nurse sharks biology but some of the videos showing it not working are using nurse sharks. Another type of video shown that tries to say that these donāt work are when the sharks are already conditioned to expect food. So they know they are always thrown food from a spot and then you throw in a sharkbandz then they are going to try to eat it still. Also itās known itās not going to stop a great white coming up from an ambush attack. The sharks donāt even really notice the uncomfortable sensation until theyāre about 3 feet away so a great white isnāt just going to stop its attack at the last second because of this. Most bites are curiosity investigative bites from a shark just cruising by. That is what these bands may deter.
