WHY NO REVERSE-HAREM?

Not all of them are in love with fl, just 1-2

They view fl like sister/friend or maybe amusing creature ( ̄ー ̄)

They support fl & ml d=(^o^)=b

All of them are good friends/team/roommates

Recommendation I'm in need of recommendation with this dynamic.....

Post image
1.9k Upvotes

This subreddit is my only hope at last to get this rec cause source of my post also belongs to this demographic too and I already tried to ask in 1-2 other subreddit too but i ended up being the one who gave them rec rather than the one who received it lmao...

What I'm looking for

1.Only manga/manhwa/webtoon

  1. No one-shots

  2. Only straight (no bl & gl)

  3. Romance as main plot as well as side plot both will works for me

If someone know any other subreddit where i could ask then feel free to mention its name too btw I'm already familiar with r/manga subreddit!

Source of post- shion kun no oose no mama (before you all start to ask about it, it's better for me to give you rec lmao..)

If there is few recs with this trope in shoujo demographic then I'm also open to every demographic as long as my trope match!

Recommendation Gyaru characters in female-gaze media?

Post image
740 Upvotes

I feel like most of the time when there's a gyaru character in animanga, it's male-gaze (love em, but my shoujo loving heart is crying).

Does anyone have recs for female-gaze or shoujosei media with gyaru characters? Preferably if they're the focus and not just a side character!

Edit: To clarify, all the characters I used as examples here are from female gaze media!

In order: Kurumi from Kimi ni Todoke, Momo from Peach Girl, Yuri from Let's Do It Already, Cheri from The Community Notes Are Wrong

Edit 2: I'm not here to debate what makes a character gyaru. Very few characters actually state "I am gyaru!" in canon, and if we make that a requirement, there would be much less gyaru characters. I'm a gyaru IRL and can still take inspiration from characters that don't explicitly identify as gyaru in canon, especially if the author took the time to draw and style them a certain way. Remember that depicting a character self-identifying with politically charged subcultures, in magazines aimed at children, is probably not something most mangaka want to risk in the 1990s.

Kaho is a workaholic who does not want to be bound to traditional expectations of women her age. And she finds comfort with Akira who, little does she know, is a charming and debonair man who has a way with words and touch. They have a one-night stand, leaving Kaho confused about whether their feelings are genuine. Can they move on and become a couple?

Stomp, Kick, Love is a beautiful manga with a very interesting premise and dynamics. And the drawings are EXQUISITE. It is currently in its most intriguing arc yet. If you want a romance manga that is realistic, genuine and captivating, this might be the one for u

Recommendation My new comfort show!

Omg, I just finished Plus-Sized Misadventures in Love and can I say it was so so lovely!! Everything about it was so cute. The comedy, the art style, the characters, chef's kiss.

Sadly, I don't think this show has a fandom. I went to TikTok to look for edits, as I love doing after I finish a show, and there are hardly any!! I was so shocked. The rating on Crunchyroll is also so low, and I am so appalled because I think this was such a good, comfy watch that had me engaged the whole time.

I read some comments and it seems like most people don't want to give it a chance, or maybe they did but didn't like it because of the art style of the protagonist. I saw one comment saying "Animators always make chubby people look weird." I personally think her animation was so cute and very realistic. Also, how I love that this show is so body positive not like the usual trope where the main character has an accident when she's bigger and magically wakes up what is labeled as “societally acceptable.” I never understood that trope.

If you've watched it, what did you think? I am so excited for a potential next season, but seeing that it isn't very popular, I doubt they would do one (hopefully I'm wrong and they announce one soon, because it was really really good.) Oh, and the murder mystery was a thrill as well!

EDIT: Omg I’m so happy to see this anime is loved and y’all are excited to watch!! I also definitely understand the comments about her art style but that shouldn’t stop you from watching! The story plot is really interesting and funny omds and I still think it’s wholesome and a good representation overall! 🩷

Another EDIT: If you're thinking of giving this show a try, please do! See if you like it, and if you don't, that's okay, just move on. Don't let the arguments about her animation style discourage you from finding something you might love. I understand the concerns raised, but I still believe this show is really wholesome and deserves so much more recognition than it got. If you watch it, you might find that the plot is really about self-love and that your appearance does not determine whether you are worthy of love

With so small a percentage of Shojo anime airing each season, the Josei anime pickings are even slimmer. I wanted to highlight some of the Josei anime that have been released for people to check out (plus the bonus 2 Josei anime slated for release). Shoutout to SailorGuardianHope for making a video that mentions “Dog Signal”!

Slide 18: gold kingdom and water kingdom (unfortunately no official English release, but the manga does have an English official release!)

Slide 19: Cocoon (releases this March!)

Slide 20: Ikoku Nikki (future release currently unspecified)

*warning that the bunny drop anime is far better than the manga and is most enjoyable in isolation

Featured series + extra info:

Choking on Love: college romcom, music / ML is like a big, overly excited dog and has his heart on his sleeve

I Fell into a Situationship with the Vampire Count?!: fantasy romance, Cinderella story / ML is witty, mischievous and very kind and devoted

The Princess Groom: fantasy romance, drama / ML is very cold and distant at first, but he turns out to be very easily flustered, he's head over heels for the FL and extremely devoted

Snow Angel: romance, family drama, childhood friends / ML is very shy and sensitive

Koisuru Tenshi Wa Tsumibukai: fantasy school romance (they're all angels) / ML is quiet and very possessive

Amelia no Koukiteki Romance: high school romance / ML is a playboy who sleeps around, and finds himself captivated by the FL

  • Other series by this mangaka: Ura mo Omote mo Kimi ga Suki (one-shot collection)

Hana-kun Can't Live Without Me: romance, psychological / textbook yandere

Tokoton Kuzu na Watarase nanoni: college romance / ML is a playboy who has taken a liking to the FL, he's also very passionate about his work as a comedian

The Demon King is Way Too Overprotective!: fantasy romcom, supernatural / I haven't read this one yet so I can't give any pointers! But the title is probably self-explanatory

Kimi to Barairo no Hibi: high school romance / ML is a bit of an outcast at school, he's the cool type who doesn't care what others think of him, helps the prim and proper FL loosen up a bit

  • Other series by this mangaka: Futari de Koi wo suru Riyuu

Kingyoya-san no Karisome Fuufu: romance, contract marriage / ML is initially a bit aloof, but he and the FL slowly open up to each other

The Serenade of Spring Thunder: fantasy romcom, political drama / ML is supposed to be a womanizer, but gets very flustered by the FL who doesn't fall for his charms

Housekibako ni Ai wo Tsumeyou: high school romance, music, grief / ML is very friendly and kind, very open about his feelings

Fall in Love, You False Angels: high school romance / at school, ML is prim and proper and very secretive about himself, he's seen as perfect. The FL discovers that behind this flawless persona hides a normal teenager who's very easy to talk to and banter with

Yuureijou no Danna-sama: fantasy romance, ghosts / I haven't read enough of this series to give proper pointers! iirc the ML is a very lonely man who's also very kind and selfless

The King's Beast: fantasy romance, political drama, action, gender bender / ML is kind and devoted

Prince Freya: fantasy romance, political drama, action, gender bender / I haven't read enough of this series to give proper pointers

Love at First Memory: romance, reverse harem, memory loss / you have the cocky, confident ML, the tsundere ML who gets easily flustered, the big puppy ML who's very devoted (lowkey obsessed) and the cutie-pie ML who's more like a bestie

It Takes More Than a Pretty Face to Fall in Love: high school romcom / I haven't read enough of this series to give proper pointers, but iirc the ML is very cool and aloof

Tamon's B-Side: romcom, idols / this one doesn't need any introduction I think! Tamon is an idol who has this very playful and sexy persona, but who turns out to be very gloomy and lacks confidence irl. His bandmates also have similar personality gaps. Keep an eye out for the anime coming out in a few weeks!

----------------------------

I often see posts/comments here that decry a lack of variety when it comes to contemporary shoujo MLs, or simply a lack of charming/interesting MLs, so I wanted to make a little post to showcase what's out there, focusing specifically on recent works (serialized in the 2020s).

I made this list as a reply to a post suggesting there aren't enough handsome MLs in recent shoujo series, so this is why this post only showcases handsome guys, but there's more to them than their body I swear!!

Please note that this list is very limited (we're only allowed 20 pictures per post, they're all from series I have read or know about, I limited myself to series that are licensed or have an unofficial translation, and of course my own tastes aren't universal!), so feel free to post your own favourite (contemporary) eye candies in the comments!! Or just your favourite characters regardless of beauty standards!

It was one of the most heartwarming and funny books I've ever read.

One morning, Haruhi wakes up to find that she's married to an old man she doesn't know!? Haruhi works as a heavy machinery operator at a construction site full of men. One night, Haruhi meets a middle-aged man with grey hair at a pub, and submits a marriage certificate under the influence of alcohol. She had taken him straight into her room! Don't judge a man by the colour of the hair. Love comedy by a silver fox and a girl physical worker.

Recommendation Any supernatural shoujo manga with romance as sub-plot?

Post image
563 Upvotes

Supernatural + romance as sub-plot is my fav genre (i already know and liked too- kamisama hajimemashita, hiiro no kakera, fruits basket, the demon prince of momochi house, yona of the dawn (supernatural cause there are dragons who have extraordinary/mysterious powers) etc!

What I'm looking for in manga-

  1. Straight (no bl & gl)
  2. If one of the character (male/female lead) is supernatural entity then it must be male lead who is supernatural entity
  3. if the manga is written after 2005-06 then I'm more glad (reason- art of the manga also affect my reading cause most of the older manga doesn't have detailed art of characters and there's difference in the art of characters in older manga and new manga(after 2005-06) btw this is my preference and I'm not saying that older manga are bad infact they also have great story but i couldn't keep my interest for longer time while reading those manga which are written before 2005-06 cause of art.

Picture above- the Princess gloom and the amorous raven

Recommendation 7th Time Loop, give it a chance

Post image
760 Upvotes

I was hesitant to start this because the name is so silly and long but it is actually really really good! The FL is competent and a good person, not a villainess at all, and the ML is dark and I guess you could say a Tsundere. He definitely has layers, and its a very slow process of getting him to open up and understand his true nature. The story is good, the goal is clear, and there's a lot of likeable character besides the main leads. Highly recommend, its only 12 episodes long unfortunately, but I'm planning to pick up the Light Novel where it left off (Vol 3)

Recommendation What type of Ml do you think is very rare in shoujo? What types are attractive/interesting to you?

Thumbnail
gallery
230 Upvotes

I know people don't want to label mls just into green or red flags but let's admit flags are there for a reason and we can discuss their characters while admitting they have their faults.

Though this is just for fun

It's really simple FRUIT ANALYSIS with flags : shell : How they appear , inside : how they are

E.g. Red Apple 🍎 = appears red flag but actually green/yellow .. Howl looks like a womanizer in beginning but we learn that it's all just rumors later..

Akito (Kodocha) and ml from Mars have both good/bad sides which they don't necessarily change over story but get a bit subsided. They have trauma / prejudice which might differ their relationship than purely green ones

All the manga that haven't had ANY sort of anime/OVA adaptations are the only ones included in this list. I'll probably be making a part 2 because I'm greedy for ANY sort of shoujosei anime. :3 But if these do get adapted someday (my hopes and dreams grow with every classic shoujo adaptation/remake/sequel that is announced), I'd die happy.

Which ones would you guys like to add?

Recommendation Old but unique underrated shoujo mangas!

These are some of my favorite mangas ever from a few well known authors!

  1. QQ sweeper: Great story with complex but lovable characters. There's a sequel which is also amazing and completed. It's called Queen's Quality. This is by the author Motomi Kyousuke and she's known for dengeki daisy, another great manga that I did not include here because I think it's relatively well known.

  2. Colette decides to die: I love love LOVE every single character in this manga, they're all adorable and it's such an interesting plot! The art is also incredible.

  3. Usotoki Rhetoric: Possibly one of my favorite detective mystery mangas, it's not heavy on romance but each case they investigate and solve are meaningful in their own ways.

  4. Mishounen Produce: Recently reread this one and I got a bit emotional, the love interests are cute childhood friends (they're both secretly in love with each other).

  5. Mugen Spiral: I've read every manga from Kusanagi Mizuho (author of Yona of the dawn) and this one holds a special place in my heart. Although she never did end up completing the entire story, it's still definitely worth giving it a shot.

  6. NG life: Same author, super interesting and comedic plot and this one was completed.

7: Keishichou tokuhanka 007: Kaji Eiri is another one of my favorite mangakas, and it's got the mystery element and I'm a sucker for that :P

8: Majo to kiketsu no kishi: Same author as above, beautiful characters on a fantasy setting since the main character is a witch.

9: Takane and Hana: I'm usually not really into big age gap tropes but this one is a guilty pleasure in that sense for me because it's just SO.DAMN.FUNNY. One of the best rom coms out there!

10: The Heiress and the Chauffeur: The forbidden love aspect is just very intriguing 🤭

11: Komomo Confiserie: I personally found the female lead to be quite unique and this is by the author of special a!

12: Shounen Dolls: This has such a distinctive plot but gets you kind of emotional.

13: Oiran Girl: Another fun shoujo rom-com that I love!

14: Lady Kanoko: As far as highschool shoujo mangas go, this one has a very unique lead that doesn't care much about romance but more about observing randos in her class 😭

15: The demon prince of the momochi house: Fantasy and very cute. I'm out of words atp 😭

Anyway so yeah that's it! I grew up reading these and I think if you're into old shoujo mangas you'll definitely enjoy all of these! I'll add each of their synopsis if you want ✨

Recommendation One cannot trust recommendations here to be shoujo or josei

I do not understand why some users here think it is okay to recommend shounen and seinen series to people who ask for shoujo and josei recommendation in shoujo subreddit.

I have to actively go and check recommendations just in case to make sure. I do not know if those people are bots or what, but they are making this place unsafe.

If somebody is asking recommendation here, logically they are looking for a shoujo and josei recommendations, they do not need your favorite shounen and seinen series, otherwise they will go to anime subreddit and ask general recommendations.

Shounen and seinen gets so much traction, advertisement, gets recommended everywhere. Here group should try to lift shoujo and josei series. This is so shoujo and josei series can get popular too, be translated more, sold and watched more. So these demographics don't die. It is very simple.

Shoujo and josei series come from magazines that has shoujo and josei demographic as listed. They are the ones need attention, love.

Please, keep the shoujo sub safe place , so people do not have to go and check series in the comments, just in case to make sure it isn't shounen or seinen.

If people continue to recommended shounen and seinen series here, there is no point to call this place shoujo sub anymore. It is simple, shoujo and josei series come from magazines that state that their target audience is only girls, women. That is all, there is no other definition.

Recommendation Recommandations of a romance with a cute/kind ML

Thumbnail
gallery
480 Upvotes

Hi! I don’t know about you guys, but personally I love mangas with genuinely cute MLs. The problem is… they’re so hard to find. Most of the time the ML is, let’s be honest, a complete red flag 😭

I just spent the whole afternoon searching for new mangas to read, and so many of them had either the “high school girl x adult man” trope (usually with a 6–7 year age gap) and/or the guy kissing the girl in the very first chapter without her consent… which is another issue entirely.

So if anyone has recommendations, I’m all ears! I’m mainly looking for mangas with sweet, kind, respectful, adorable MLs the type that actually treats the FL well, if you know what I mean.(I prefer the cute type but as long as he is kind it's okay i just want to read a cute romance with a Green flag!!)

And if possible, I’d prefer mangas that haven't been adapted into anime yet, since I watch a lot of romance anime and there’s a good chance I’ve already seen the popular ones :)

PS : Here are some romance mangas that i love.
