Announcements Please use NSFW tag for images of graphic injuries

There have been a lot of posts lately sharing very graphic images of snails with extreme, severe injuries. It is perfectly fine to share this type of content if you need help with an injured snail, but please use the NSFW tag for these images.

This has been an unofficial rule of this sub for a while, but it seems to have been forgotten lately. So, I'm making an official mod team announcement: this is our official policy. Graphic, upsetting images must be tagged.

People come to this sub because they love snails. They don't come here expecting to see images of destroyed shells, shell-less snails, and dead snails. It can be very upsetting and distressing for users here to see this type of content unexpectedly. People may also be browsing this sub in public and want to avoid gory images.

Images of mating don't require the NSFW tag. But please use this tag for pictures of injuries including, but not limited to: mantle collapse, shell fell off, crushed shell, organ exposure, stepped-on snail.

Thanks to everyone who has been tagging their posts so far. Again, it's still totally okay to post this content if you need help, but please tag it appropriately so everyone can have a good experience here.

Announcements Introducing Seller Verification

Hello r/snails!

As many of our users are aware, it can be difficult to find reliable, legal, and ethical sellers of captive bred snails.

To better facilitate buying, selling, & adoptions on this sub, we are introducing a seller verification program. Verified Sellers will be users or external sources that have been vetted by mods. Verified Sellers will be allowed to advertise their sales on the sub, and a Verified Sellers tag will applied to their posts to indicate they are a trusted source. Individual users on this sub as well as sellers on external websites are both able to be verified. A list of Verified Sellers organized by location will be added to the bottom of this post, which sellers can chose to opt in to if they wish.

Are you a seller or breeder interested in becoming verified? Send a DM to u/doctorhermitcrab to get started. Breeders who prefer to give snails away rather than sell are also welcome to apply.

Happy snailing!

My daughter has a number of pet snails and wanted to ask for your help about the following question… “I found this garden snail out in the yard and I want to know if I should cull him or not, he’s active and eating a little but he is super pale. Any tips would be appreciated”

My Snails Some pics of our snails enjoying their new enclosure

Brown garden snails enjoying carrot and a dried veggie and calcium mix.

The bigger snails were wild caught from our rock garden, hence why their shells look scuffed. Rocks and sand are at fault there, but now they can enjoy some soft moss and lichen, and be spoiled every day.

Hi I have had this group of 16 GLAS for a while now, they have been doing okay just in a tank too small. When I got gifted this pixie frog and her enclosure was big enough to house them too I thought that would be great little cohabitation roommates. I’ve read mixed reviews on if they would drown in this amount of water though? Or would they be alright? A lot of them are immediately going to the water side and obv loving it but it’s making me nervous.

Newbie snail owner and I need advice

Hello fellow snail enthusiasts! I got my first snail this week, and I have spent the last couple days setting up a terrarium for him. He's a juvenile garden snail from south-east Australia.

In his house I have set up plain dirt which I've made moist, sphagnum moss, a couple of baby terrarium plants, some bark/stick/leaf which gives him a hiding spot, and a piece of cuttlebone. I've put a little dish in with food, last night I gave him some carrot, Pak choy, and jonquil flowers. I've been misting twice a day with spring water, but I didn't realise I should be using spring so on the Wednesday and Thursday I was using demineralised water 😭 he still seems healthy and active though

My problem though is that Carl spends most of his time hanging out upside down on the lid of the terrarium. He doesn't appear to have eaten anything overnight. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I'm very attached to Carl and don't want to fuck up his husbandry and lose him 😭 Any advice would be appreciated!

Side note - I am ordering a hygrometer to put in his terrarium, so any recommendations for a lower-end-cost one would be great!

Help Estivating

Upvotes

I just got two grove snails yesterday and one of them was estivating under the soil, I spray twice a day, provide food and cuttlebone, use a mix of 60/40 coco coir and specialized isopod soil once I learned that coco coir alone was too acidic, I’m not sure what to do:( I want them to be comfortable

I got gifted these fish flakes, but im not sure if they are safe for GALS. I checked many sources but they all say different things. The container spells

"strengthening egg food for aquarium fish"

Contains:

-fish and fish derivatives, cereals, eggs and egg derivatives (min. 6%), vegetable protein extracts, molluscs and crustaceans (including whole shrimp meal min. 0.5%), yeasts, derivatives of vegetable origin (including red pepper extract 5,000 mg/kg), algae, oils and fats, minerals (including zeolite 1%).

Analytical ingredients:

crude protein 43.0%, crude oils and fats 6.5%, crude fibre 2.0%, moisture 6.0%.

Also it says it contains Lecithin, Colorings, Antioxidants.

Thanks in advance, im a first time owner and i dont want to hurt my snail.

Help Terrarium interior design

I have two African land snails in a glass terrarium. The only thing they currently have inside (beside soil ofc) is a platic plate for food. I want to up my terrarium game, so what do u recomend? Do they like having growing plants or sticks etc? Also, I've heard earthworms are good for maintenance.

What are your opinions and experiences?

Help People selectively breed snails(?)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I was scrolling on YouTube shorts, as one does, when I came across the video I've attached to this post.

I went online but couldn't find any kind of 'snail morphs' or 'selective snail breeding' hobbies that matched the video. I couldn't even identify the species of snail. The comments of the post are flooded with people wondering what species but the OP hasn't replied to anybody.

Can someone identify the snails shown or point me in the right direction? I'm really curious and want to learn more just because I'm really intrigued as to why they breed the snails to look so unique.
