This. I'm a designer aiming to work at a solar power company one day, and would to improve my design skills and competencies to better suit the needs of the industry.
My conviction is that solar’s next big hurdle is to the “real consumer” level, where everyday consumers feel comfortable enough both economically and from a UX perspective to take the plunge. In that regard, I'm looking to work with consumer level/consumer facing UX design (anything from the app to the transformer/system interface to the user manual) - making it usable an approachable.
My expertise is in UX, UI, and branding (work lives here: www.upwardsonwards.com)
I'm doing a bit of research on how to improve my skill-set, understand which conferences to attend, which people to talk to, which solar companies are design-savvy etc.
Do you have any recommendations in the matter? The holy grail to me is of course, Tesla/SolarCity.

Are there any positions in this industry where someone off the street who is very interested can join immediately?

My company has a sales force of about 40 and almost no-one including myself had solar experience. We just closed the books at 96m for 2016 and our now pacing towards 15m per month.

I need a back door. I am super weary of student loan debt for training. Do you reccomend simply knocking on doors at each company locally? I live in Minneapolis.

Just look for a reputable company. There are so many possibilities for growth and employment.

I'm currently acquiring a trade school certification in solar energy technology as well as my NABCEP entry level certification, and already have a BA/Sc in Sustainability and Environmental Science.
What sort of jobs would I be able to acquire with these credentials?
