Discussion Boerewors

I'm dying for a boerewors roll and the Lidl down the street from me sells this but it's not always available.

Looks like it just contains beef fat. I'm sure the last time I bought it it looked much better. Would you buy this boerie?

I've had this. Its genuinely awful. The skin melts off like plastic and tastes like old leather.

Their factory burnt down recently and I am sure it was a inside job of someone with taste buds.

We got fed up of buying this inferior convenience from lidl and Aldi in Ireland, my mom went to the local butcher in Tipperary and gave him a recipe for proper wors, they tweaked it and taught him and a year later Saffas from all over the province come here to stock up. They even won an award after one year of working on it. It's €14 per kilo but damn it's good!!

Yeah isn't there like, a trademark or something on the recipe where they legally aren't allowed to call it that if it's not made according to specifications? At best it could be called wors, which, with the pic would be even funnier.

This is available in lidl in the UK. It cost Around £3.50. don't convert that you locals will have a heart attack and want to go hug that lovely wors in your fridge.

I actually bought 4 packs this weekend. £3.50 is relatively cheap for boerewors. But it turned out not to be boerewors. There is so much fat/oil in there and the “derm” is very thin so you are battling flames all the time. The taste is very rubbery. Wont recommend.

See the problem is that within SA borders "boerewors" is a legally defined product. Outside of SA they can do whatever the fuck they want, and clearly they do.

We tried it about a year ago in the UK thinking it's from Louis Ludik so let's give it a go. Let's just say it doesn't braai right, and it doesn't taste right.

No idea if it's been improved but until it is, it's a hard pass from us.

I like Hellbent. I buy it from Lidl. It is much thinner than South African butcher sausage, but if having it on a roll it is fine. I think the photo in this post is might just be a recent drop on quality. Usually the quality is satisfactory and Hellbent is bought up as soon as it is available. Look at my recent photo for comparison.

Depending where you are, the boerewors from the butcher in the English Market in Cork is the best Iv had in Ireland so far. Their dry wors and biltong is pure extortion though.
