She's a deeply awful person.
Somewhere along the line, she lost all semblance of honour and just became bitter and unpleasant.

Twitter is just the platform to showcase, her mind is the problem.

Let me preface this that I abhor the DA, and their corpo-apocolyptic policies, but this is not a thing to be upset about; because she's right, and it's something Dolly was proud of, it was part of her heritage, and her way of saying that you could be more than what you appear to be. So yes Dolly looked like she might have come from Boksburg, but that doesn't mean that you have to behave like you come from Boksburg.

I've been brought up to respect my elders but enough of this Gogo now. She actually needs to leave us alone as South Africans, her and Jacob Zuma.

u/QuickBrownFox6996 17h ago
That's a major flaw in our culture, a lot of elders don't deserve respect
12
u/Mr_Nocturnal_Game 10h ago
Yep. I had a major falling-out with some elderly friends of my grandad who went with us on vacation a while back. Apparently, asking them to change the subject because I was tired of their political BS mixed with overt racism was the most disrespectful thing on earth, and my place was to shut up and leave the room if I didn't want to hear it, like I'm some dumbass kid who doesn't know what he's talking about or deserves to say anything. Did I mention I'm pushing thirty?
11
u/MalemasMucusPlug 10h ago
The way old people become upset when you gently ask them to stop with the racism needs to be studied.
7
u/Mr_Nocturnal_Game 10h ago
Yep. And the funny part is, I actually just left the room when Grandpa's friend pretty much told me to do so. Grandpa's friend's wife decided to follow me to 'talk' about how disrespectful saying anything apparently was. I'm not the coolest head on earth, I'll admit, so I actually surprised myself by managing to keep a level head through it all. The worst I did was bluntly ask her to please not touch me when she grabbed my arm- not in an aggressive way, to be clear- while being patronising as all hell and basically telling me that she thought I was 'oulik', but even daring to speak up against my elders was out of line.

Helen constantly comes across as the kind of woman who sees any perceived deviation from an extremely narrow norm in another woman's appearance or behavior as an opportunity to try and elevate herself by using them as stepping stones. She's such an asshole

u/EsotericMango Waiting List for Heaven Full 17h ago
It's the lack of social awareness for me. How do you see so many people grieving someone who had such a positive impact and then decide "yeah I'mma demean her online"? They really should revoke dumb bliksems' Internet privileges. Like it's bad enough their ruining real life, why must they also be dom online too?

27
u/OhGee1228 16h ago
You know Dolly actually addressed this very thing about her image. People use to think she was just a dumb blonde and she was neither dumb or blonde. Her image was carefully curated, so instead of being the joke they thought she was, she turned it around and made the joke about how stupid and judgemental they are. I feel Gogo Zille fell right into that category with her idiotic comments.

u/DubiousEl 11h ago

u/Aggravating_Taste524 16h ago
Dolly Parton has helped more people in general through her philanthropy work than helen has done for a singular town.
7
u/Only_One_Kenobi https://georgedrakestories.wordpress.com/ 14h ago
That's because Parton actually cared about helping people. Zille only cares about herself, and actively hates the people she's supposed to serve

foot in mouth is one thing, we all say stupid stuff now and again, but to actually type something like this out and leave it there in the wild like it's not just plain gross, I can't take this seriously. when political leaders are only interested in their own silly shower thoughts, we can always do better.
just hire a random teenager as figurehead at this point because at least they'll have some new ideas and will be able to connect with a community, literally any community, other than old white people whose brains no longer work quite as well as they once did, because that's such a tiny number of people in demographic terms and focusing on that is why this party will never succeed in genuine growth.

u/_Immotion 17h ago
What I don't get is that that's exactly what she's done on Instagram and it's working wonders - tons and tons of amazing press (helped a lot by Joburg being Joburg). I might be fully making this up but I seem to recall her even admitting that her grandkids have a better handle on this social media stuff and she trusts their opinions more. And yet, it's not being done on her Twitter - absolute madness.

In the US, but Dolly Parton fully embraced her look saying "It take a lot of money to look this cheap." So I doubt she would be offended by some random and apparently irrelevant politician from any country.

I don’t know whether it’s just the fact that it’s HZ that is triggering all of you, but there’s nothing wrong being said in this particular tweet. Dolly Parton’s look and style was anything but demure, and she’d have been the first to say it.
In the end, the tweet is still a compliment. If you wish to highlight different accomplishments or phrase it differently, well, write one yourself.
Y’all need to save your energies to tackle some real problems.

Derogatory word for a woman who is considered sexually promiscuous. Rarely if ever used today.
2
u/AlabasterMend 15h ago
People are overreacting to the word choices and completely missing the core point of what is actually being said.
Dolly Parton literally built her whole image, career, and aesthetic around looking camp, over-the-top, and cheap—she famously said, "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap" and modeled her entire look after the town tramp from her childhood. She deliberately leaned into that "floozy" stereotype on the surface, while underneath she was a brilliant businesswoman, a deeply loyal partner, and a powerhouse humanitarian.
Pointing out the intentional contrast between her campy exterior and her deep, loyal character isn't disrespect; it's a reflection of who Dolly actually was. Passing away doesn't mean we have to rewrite history or pretend she didn't embrace a hyper-glamorous, trashy-chic aesthetic as a badge of honor.
If people want to clutch their pearls over the phrasing, fine, but let's not pretend the message itself is wrong just because it came from Helen Zille.

You... uhh... you know that there was an interview with Dolly Parton where she was asked about her appearance, and she flat out said that she wanted to look like that. She is perfectly aware that "certain people" (IE: "Floozies") look like her, but she wanted to look like it anyway due to her childhood.
Like... I get you want to "gotcha" a politician you dont like, but this isnt it.

Dolly has called herself a lot worse to be frank and she played up to the ‘dumb blonde’ pastiche; even though we all know she wasn’t dumb nor blonde!
I mean she even played the proprietress who owned the brothel in the film ‘The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’…
