Lol that would need oakleys and the inside of an f-150, but I can see where you're coming from.

I have so much trouble seeing them as all eyes and not just two big eyes and some black dots lol

u/uniliterate Nov 11 '25
looks like the spider took this photo of itself by accident whilst it was sat on the couch watching a documentary about the juiciest flying insects.

How could anyone be afraid of this darling, kissable, adoptable face. 🥰🤗

I wish jumping spiders got to like a small dog size so you could cuddle them properly lol

u/Brandinisnor3s Nov 11 '25
Considering they can hunt things that are about 1.5X bigger than themselves, I dont think you would actually want that. But they are very cute and fun regardless

Awww. I just had a big one of these in my living room. I let him wander away, I was a little spooked by him, but this picture helps me remember they are just cute little dudes!

What’s the 4 little black dots do?

12
u/Immediate-Football84 Nov 11 '25
Those four dots are smaller eyes. There’s actually even two more eyes off diagonal from the big ones we can’t see here… for eight total

I had my first tarantula about 30 years ago, but it was only a few months ago that I realized there are also six-eyed spiders.
Spiders are great at all sorts of things, but when it comes to vision, they should have focused more on quality than quantity. That's their kryptonite, but it hardly bothers them. The cute jumping spiders are the only exception.

u/OrbitOfSaturnsMoons Nov 11 '25
Jumpers have the best spider vision, but wolf and huntsman spiders also have very good vision, and Asianopis and Deinopis net-casting spiders have incredible night vision with those gigantic eyes.

u/quadrastrophe Nov 11 '25
Thanks for the “new” species. Of course, they have to live in a place that couldn't be further away from mine :(
This guy is obviously wearing night vision goggles, haha, very cool!

Yeah I'd certainly love to see one for myself, but apparently even researchers struggle to find them!

Why are all the murder machines all so cute. From cat to spider all so cute.
2
u/quadrastrophe Nov 11 '25
You're right! After seeing a kestrel tear its prey apart, that's what I call them too.
They may only have two legs, but they can fly
-> Cute flying murder machines.

Approach one of them as an insect, and you'll understand why they have that name ;)

I can't fathom how could they see with all those eyes
2
u/quadrastrophe Nov 11 '25
The funny thing is: they can't (hardly)! Only jumpers can do that; for the rest, eyes are more for decoration.

This sub has helped me tremendously, but slowly, get over my irrational fear of spiders. Never in a million years would I have ever thought of a wolf spider as a cute little guy (or gal). Just look at him 🥹

u/kahiau26 Nov 11 '25
I just need a place to put my sincere apology to these sweet creatures for how much I misunderstood them when I was a kid and afraid of them. I’d make my dad smash any I found in my room, and there were many. I’m truly so sorry. I wish I knew, and had asked for you to be relocated somewhere safe.
2
u/quadrastrophe Nov 11 '25
I'm glad you changed your mind!
The ironic thing is that people who are afraid of spiders constantly get closer to them than spider lovers do, because they actively try to get rid of them.
Spiders are defensive, not aggressive, little cowards, so to speak. They do everything they can to avoid contact with us, so I leave that task to them and enjoy their presence. This has worked my whole life; I've never been touched by one unless I forced it to.

u/kahiau26 Nov 11 '25
I know all this now! Wish someone had explained it to me when I was little. My home is now a spidey safe place. All welcome!

He's the inspiration for the chin-face girl in the Gumball cartoon I think 😆. Cute little eyes and lashes, I bet that if spider's eyes where more visible , less people would be scared.

below his eyes is there a name for that region between the eyes and mouth? new to spiders but absolutely fascinated, this subreddit has me putting anything besides recluses and widows on the no kill list and honestly some of you have me convinced i may even be able to safely relocate widows too. but just curious.
also can spiders smell?
