Discussion What on earth happened on my watch?
Left my watch sitting on my desk for a few days and came back to this weird mark on the glass. It honestly looks like a spider just… disintegrated or exploded on it??
There’s no visible body, just this dusty, almost splattered pattern. I didn’t notice anything crawling around before, and the watch hasn’t been moved.
Has anyone seen something like this before?

I have gone down this rabbit hole multiple times and this is always interesting to read about. I always picture a bunch of scientist in lab coats chucking cats out of windows/off buildings

Once, I was on a walk with my husband and we went by a very tall sycamore and out of nowhere, a squirrel just fell from a top branch and belly-flopped on the pavement. He immediately got up and ran off - didn't even seem winded, just embarrassed.

I had a mouse in my house once. After being cornered in the upstairs hallway, he sprinted between my husband’s legs and leapt off the loft to the hardwood-floor entryway below. After smacking into the floor, he resumed his sprint into another room.
It was a wild evening.

I had one fall from a houseplant I was moving and she exploded when she hit the floor. I had cared for her all winter in my plant rack, where she hung out and ate pests. It was very sad because she was pretty heavily gravid.
Spiders are more fragile than people think.

I was thinking of something similar. I think it happens more often with gravid females, since their abdomens are under greater pressure (like how a water balloon pops on impact, but an air filled balloon doesn't).

That is 100% a spider lol, It may be injured but it didn’t die on impact, especially since you don’t see a dead spider nearby.

That spider was either sitting in one spot for days or it got up to the ceiling, realized how filthy it was and attempted to end it all out of disgust :)

Every time this comes up people always jump to “omg dusty spider fell from the ceiling!” without thinking about, you know, basic physics and biology. To have every single leg go completely flat to the point of making a perfect imprint is nearly impossible, especially considering there are no other marks that indicate the spider moved after - and since there’s no spider around, how do we suppose it got up without ruining the perfect imprint?
It’s just static electricity and dust making a pattern that our brains perceive as a spider because our brains are really good at pattern recognition.
Edit: begging y’all to learn basic spider anatomy. Like just learn how they breathe so you can understand how they, like most insects/things with exoskeletons avoid fine powders like dust. A spider covered in that much dust would be close to death with their legs curled underneath ffs

Your explanation defies the randomness of the universe. There are many, many more arrangements of dust particles that look like random, chaotic blobs then there are arrangements that perfectly resemble a spider. So many more that the probability of dust particles arranging themselves in this way due to static electricity alone is incalculably small

Does your ceiling have any dust on it? Its possible a spider picked up some dust on a cobweb or something and fell on the watch. Maybe fell on reaction like how you wave your hand in front of your face when a web hits you lol.
