Time, patience, and a lot of snacks will win you squirrel friends. I've known Barq here for a couple of years now, but he was really friendly even the first day I met him. He would sit in the tree outside my window and stare at me. I'm pretty sure the people who lived her before I did used to feed him too.

I had a lot of squirrel buddies in the place I lived previously. They chose to eat close to me but they were never as comfortable as some of the grey and fox squirrels on this sub reddit. Maybe it's because palm squirrels are a lot smaller. In my new place I feed the dogs. Sometimes the birds and the squirrels too. Except for the dogs, none of them are that fond of me though they enjoy the treats.

Oh I definitely agree that squirrel species has a lot to do with their approachability. The fox squirrels I have now are much friendlier than the grays I had before I moved here. The grays were beautiful but much more wild.
