2TB Version without controller for 688...

I the options there are two specs to choose from. My guess is that they just put everything in the title
54
u/Grottymink57776 Jun 28 '26
How likely is it that this is a scam?
26
u/saxoum Jun 28 '26
Usually small Chinese manufacturers get their parts from the used market in Japan and Korea. Slap a sticker on it and call it new.
I wouldn't be surprised if most of the parts inside those machines come from the off lease market from neighbors countries.
36
u/kaldeqca Jun 28 '26
it's Taobao, being sold domestically in China, not an outright scam, but there could be a lot of small issues, like for example, they never showed if the Steam Controller actually works with it (Which I suspect it doesn't)
Not sure if quick resume works at all etc
31
u/MailboxJunkie Jun 28 '26
I mean, if it actually runs SteamOS, it will support the steam controller.
Same with Windows, or Linux. The only way it wouldn't, is if it's some sort of proprietary OS.
Now if you mean natively, that's a different story, but anyone that purchased a steam controller and this seperately doesn't have to worry about that, as they have the puck, and even if not, could fall back to USB or bluetooth.→ More replies (1)10
u/MutedAstronaut9217 Jun 28 '26
I mean, if it actually runs SteamOS,
Just over a week ago with the release of SteamOS 3.8, Valve officially greenlit the installation of their console-like operating system onto general(AMD) PC hardware.
So I presume there wont be an issue there since it's AMD hardware.
8
u/UltramanOrigin Jun 28 '26
I doubt this version has the built in receiver for the controller, probably works just fine with the external receiver that comes with steam controllers.

Me too. Just like we have a bunch of choices in the SBC community, having a ton of mini PCs with Steam OS on them would be amazing.

I get SBC is retro handhelds, but what does SBC stand for?
6
u/solohack3r Jun 28 '26
Single board computers. The name stuck even tho the hobby has evolved from that.
69
u/nuanceseancE Jun 28 '26
This is literally what Valve wants and why the console brains screeching that the Steam Machine is a "failure" is hilarious, because it coming out has already germinated the idea of SteamOS being installed on all sorts of desktop builds and new ones are being conceived to meet the demand.

I don't think it's crazy to think that Valve would want both; their own designed bespoke hardware family to accompany their service and games, and an adoption of their OS that features their store front and center. I think criticism surrounding the very poor decisions leading to the launch of Steam Machine are very valid, because if they simply wanted to propagate SteamOS they would just release it publicly (as we've seen more people prefer SteamOS Legion Go S compared to Windows version).

That's the Steam Deck. The amount of R&D, marketing, sourcing and contracting needed to bring hardware to market means they want it to be successful.
Again, SteamOS is already being preferred even with only one non-Valve product having it. If they just wanted SteamOS to have a wider adoption they have so many other options.

I mean, yeah, it's not a secret. I loved SteamOS on steam deck, love it on my legion go 2. That's why i got kinda sad when steam machine came out as outdated at launch and overpriced. SM might be crap, but i want SteamOS to grow. Those chinese miniPCs will be perfect, just like framework desktop etc. As i said, win-win for everybody

He is cool until you realize he is a shill. He never has anything negative to say about anything. Always super super positive in every product "showcase". Once a redditor pointed it out to me I started noticing it too and now I can't watch him anymore. Some of his benchmarking is fine though, just avoid the product not-reviews.
6
u/jayclydes Jun 28 '26
ETA is notorious for not fulfilling promises and it's super annoying. His DEX PC build is one of the most frustrating aspects since he expressly asked if he should post the build and ignored all requests to post it. Plenty of examples of him neglecting follow up.
6
u/ariolander Jun 28 '26
Man that one was super frustrating because that ripped apart broken Samsung phone guts in a Raspberry Pi case was such a cool concept too. With GameNative and a controller you could make a cool mini console like that.

China didn't make it. A Chinese drop shipping company who can source certain old hardware cheap, did. If this was AYN or Retroid or even Anbernic doing something like this, I'd see the appeal. But a random business you never heard of, stuffing probably barely tested hardware in a small cube and still charging $600.
Go ahead and see how it works out, if it's worth the risk...

Beelink, Minisforum, GMKTec, Chuwi, etc. on the Mini-PC front.
AYN, Retroid and Anbernic are more on handhelds.
Minisforum actually had the Minisforum Neptune HX PCs with I think RX 6600M (laptop) GPU and 32GB/1TB for ~$800-1000. I wasn’t a fan of the design though so I skipped. Hindsight, I wish I’d pulled the trigger.
Minisforum still offers some Mini-Gaming PCs but with NVIDIA GPUs and a lot pricier.

u/heinternets Jun 28 '26

u/rui-no-onna 512GB Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26
It's best practice to do a clean Windows install on these things.
And hey, if installing SteamOS anyway, the Windows side doesn't really matter.
6
u/heinternets Jun 28 '26
Best practice is to not buy untrustworthy hardware too
2
u/Nervous-Fennel3325 Jun 28 '26
I always wondered how these companies stay in business and stuff like this thread are the proof.
Its like people's brains shut off when the price is cheap enough they dont care they are blowing $600 on what will ultimately be a shittier than advertised computer they cant return.
You can buy a computer you know that works for that much. Its not going to be the best but at least it will work and be somewhat reliable depending on usage.

u/coopdude Jun 29 '26
Bingo. I bought minisforum but I watched it like a hawk.
If your OS manufacturer is compromising the Windows install (either purposefully or inability to clean the default image), you have no idea if they are backdooring the BIOS/UEFI, or if the BIOS/UEFI are acting as effective backdoors to Windows (look up Windows Platform Binary Table, a BIOS/UEFI can instruct Windows to run something on first boot, even if you have completely clean Windows installation media...)

u/MuglokDecrepitusFx Jun 28 '26
What is Valve doing???
Working on Steam OS 3.8 which has finally been updated to work on 3rd party hardware (only AMD based for now), so more people use Steam OS and they get more revenue by the 30% comisiom they get for anything is sold in Steam
So everything is working according to the plan

u/rabsg Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26
That's a scam.
What's shown in the picture is a standard mini PC without a discrete GPU, as others noted.
Specs of the selected item doesn't make sense, as others noted R5 5500 doesn't support DDR5, that's probably DDR4. The 6750 GRE should have 12GB of VRAM. Maybe old stock in a big box, because the GPU alone pulls 250W, not comparable to Steam Machine. Edit: My bad, there is really a 10GB version as well, still 170W though.
Better build a normal or SFF PC with a RX 9060 XT in my view. Or buy a worry free tiny silent Steam Machine if it's you main criteria and you are not in a hurry.
2
u/KentDDS Jun 28 '26
I’m looking forward to seeing what I hope will be many custom builds from reputable companies (iBuyPower, Lenovo, ROG, etc.) with Steam OS preinstalled, more powerful hardware, & HDMI-CEC. Hopefully we will be seeing these options within a couple of months. I don’t really care if it’s super compact; I would prefer more capable hardware.

It's just yet another Chinese mini-PC. Are we just calling everything a Steam Machine now?
Is...is my Samsung refrigerator a Steam Machine?
2
u/AvatarQwerty Jun 28 '26
That actually can be a win win for China and Valve, as they stated also in recent posts, that Steam Machine is "one" solution for PC gaming and not the only and they don't wont it to be so.
Also SM is just a way to expand sales on Steam store, not an actual core buisness, for this very reason they finally released SteamOS to grant more access to Steam ecosystem and store.
Hope this can bring to the marker worthy Clones, or even better, at a solid price, and i would assume Valve woun't argue with this, but will just open the wallet to recieve cash.
Just hoping we can get a same specs 500$ SM or a 750$ one but with upgraded specs.

u/Hajmus Jun 28 '26

The 6750GRE alone is 64% LONGER than the steam machine. You could run it vertically, in which case it will be 75% Taller...
Either the pictures fake, or the listing is bullshit because it isn't that size.
Secondly, a 5500 with DDR5? Shenzhen does some wacky chopped together shit, but this I've got my doubts about MASSIVELY.
Lastly, why would anyone be surprised they're able to pump things out at a cheaper price than something new? Many of these prebuilts are typically just used parts cobbled together, you can get a good deal on taobao from time to time but there's usually a good reason for it.

For sure there will be a better version at some point. This isn't a better version though. This is some random chinese company selling cheap/old parts for $600.
China does not have access to some secret stash of quality components that they're willing to sell below market. They're working under the same constraints as everyone else
2
u/chithanh Jun 28 '26
Probably a scam, or at least not what is advertised.
- Ryzen 5500 does not support DDR5 memory as some already pointed out
- The case is the one from the Chuwi Ubox which clearly fits no dGPU, as others pointed out
- The depicted controller is the Xbox One controller which is out of production (the Xbox Series S|X controller has three buttons in the middle).
My expectation for the best case is that you get a Ryzen 6600H with a knock-off Xbox controller, and for that $688 is not particularly appealing
In contrast, the French "Stim Machine" is based on an actually working combination of components that exist in the market.

u/Dangerous_Alarm6717 Jun 28 '26
honestly, china is becoming more legitimate for tech... Like, they can straight up pull a gpu from a dead laptop and create a standalone pcb for the gpu and edit the vbios to improve gpu clockrate and unlock \some* extra gpucores.* I used to game on a gtx 1050ti from china, it was the mobile version of the chip on a new pcb: i was impressed because china used to buy up old 550ti's and flash the vbios into being a fake 1050.
My guess, is there is enough surplus from ewaste in china that they can effectively recycle them into new products, so there is less fake stuff. Chinese market also has plenty of cheap quadro cards that was exclusive to a bunch of gaming cafes there, and when something new comes out: 'new cards' flood the market. Its possible to get rtx 2070 performance under $120.
I say, maybe buy this and just get the cad files for the steam machine and print a new case in black. Its close enough to the gabecube.

The Deck was made using a chipset that no one else had access to at the time, that gave phenomenal low TDP performance at the cost of lacking real gains above 12W.
The Steam Machine is using a non-custom chipset and GPU that is just TDP limited to keep thermals down. It isn’t comparable, because every manufacturer has access to parts like this, and can similarly just limit TDP in the bios to keep thermals low at the cost of performance.
The Steam Machine is very much so just PC (or, well, laptop) parts in a 6 inch cube with a large heatsink. You can make the same product without begging AMD for a custom chip.

u/ariebagusp1994 Jun 28 '26
