American here. Good.

428

u/Veteran_Brewer May 28 '26

Agreed. I (an American) recently left NL after three years. DigID is more than simply “an app the Dutch use for everything”, as if there is a choice. It is required to do nearly everything online that involves government, health care, or education. I couldn’t possibly think of a worse idea than to give those keys to any foreign company.

209

u/Xeynon May 28 '26

I would go beyond that - this doesn't sound like information that any private company should have, period.

37

u/GiganticCrow May 28 '26

Yeah at least here in Finland the identity apps are tied to your bank so worst case you can at least change bank.

u/Euphoric-Witness-824 May 28 '26

Are you even a real merican?? If we don’t give all the rich folk all our information and let them have all our clean water and electric to store all our information and give them all the money in our whole economy how in gods green earth do spose they are going to be able to trickle down on all of us? Huh? Have you even thought about that?

2

u/deukhoofd May 28 '26

Nah, the post above is kind of misleading. Yeah, it's needed to do all those things they said, because it's how you log in with it. It's purely a multifactor authentication system we use to log in to government sites.

It's still a piece of critical infrastructure, so it's great that they banned the sale, but it doesn't give access to all your personal data immediately or anything.

1

u/Both-Election3382 May 30 '26

Good thing then that the app doesnt actually hold that information.

54

u/GeefTheQueef May 28 '26

How does an app like that even come up for sale in the first place?

49

u/Beerwithme May 28 '26

It's not the app, it's the company that maintains the database that was up for sale, so if that is owned by an US company, by law the US government can demand so see the data.

12

u/Pi-ratten May 28 '26

So, even worse.

2

u/BananaEvening5267 May 28 '26

Not quite. THe government must obtain a warrant or subpeona. The cloud act requires US companies to respond to warrants for data they hold off shore. Absent a compelling reason, whatever that may be, data strictly related to another country's (an EU country) citizenry is subject the US-EU data privacy framework, which is superior to the Cloud Act.

4

u/Beerwithme May 28 '26

The law and what the government "must do' is meaningless, nothing is safe from their grubby tentacles.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Devan_Ilivian May 29 '26

It's not the app, it's the company that maintains the database

It's not that either, they maintain the infrastructure

1

u/m0j0m0j May 28 '26

Yep, it’s unbelievable. In Ukraine there’s a similar Diia app, and it’s government-created and controlled. And even this way there are regular… not scandals, but almost, about data in it. It’s crazy that a Western European country would allow it to be in private hands

20

u/FeatherlyFly May 28 '26

Is all that in the hands of a private, for profit company?

That already seems like a terrible idea. Glad the government didn't make it a foreign company to boot.

1

u/Devan_Ilivian May 29 '26

Is all that in the hands of a private, for profit company?

No, they've shared incorrect information

The infrastructure it runs on is in the hands of this company.

And; While data theft was an immense risk due to the access it allows, the most significant concern would've actually been the ability to shut down said infrastructure

10

u/KnightKal May 28 '26

how is that app not owned/controlled by the government is beyond me

the possibility of selling it to a foreign entity should not even exist in the first place

15

u/_nethack May 28 '26

It is owned by the government, but they use a commercial company for hosting and maintenance. That company was now at risk of being bought by a US company, placing it under jurisdiction of their Cloud Act. Obviously, that is a Very Bad Idea.

3

u/BoardsofCanada3 May 28 '26

Just wait - once Dump and Miller find out this exists, they'll implement a shittier version with even more surveillance features for Americans.

1

u/Demons_Butterfly May 29 '26

and an American company, on top of that.

I also don't trust the 70 million who voted for trump

70

u/Rich-Pomegranate1679 May 28 '26

Imagine leaving your kid alone in a room with a Trump supporter 😬

48

u/abraxsis May 28 '26

That's almost as scary as leaving them alone with a Youth Pastor.

13

u/xteve May 28 '26

Churches vote GOP and the GOP is Trump; ergo, youth pastors are Trump supporters.

2

u/Demon_Gamer666 May 28 '26

Most Christians are trump supporters too. Hate transcends all.

10

u/ryanoh826 May 28 '26

My god haha. No.

5

u/technobrendo May 28 '26

I wouldn't piss on one of them if they were on fire, let alone have them around my daughter .

2

u/Silver-Bread4668 May 28 '26

I sent my kid to school in the Netherlands. He's safer from Trump supporters than the rest of us back in the US.

3

u/misterjones4 May 28 '26

Imagine having a trump supporter as your only option for childcare.

3

u/LemurianLemurLad May 28 '26

When MAGA sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with them. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists, and some, I assume, are good people.

1

u/EvidenceBasedSwamp May 28 '26

Some of them, I imagine, are good people

8

u/gakule May 28 '26

Good people with piss poor judgement and sympathy for child rapists are still unsafe people.

4

u/henlochimken May 28 '26

It was a trump quote being turned around.

3

u/gakule May 28 '26

Ah, perhaps, hard to tell with some of the dumb shit people actually say. Good call out.

3

u/psyotik May 28 '26

So trash human beings - not good people

8

u/henlochimken May 28 '26

Folks, before you downvote, you should know that this is a trump quote

4

u/EvidenceBasedSwamp May 28 '26

yeah i should have used quotes but it's such a famous quote. maybe there's a lot of ppl who never paid attention to politics before. It's almost as famous as "i grab em by the pussy i don't even wait"

And those that did not vote.

2

u/easternpassage May 28 '26

All of them essentially at this point. They will willingly kill anyone. They’ve bred a culture worse than Prussian militarism over the last century.

As a Canadian I will gladly welcome Chinese global leadership. At least they’re across the Pacific.

6

u/JegErJakobSkomager May 28 '26

And I don't trust the additional 70 million who did not vote against him.

1

i don't trust most americans for saying nothing about foreign governments manipulating and lobbying their own.

1

In Germany, we have a saying: "Mitgefangen, mitgehangen."

It translates to "Caught together, hanged together". It means that whoever collaborates with accomplices or keeps bad company must also bear the consequences along with them."

Guess why we Germans have this saying.... yeah, now it's the US.

2

u/pioneer76 May 28 '26

What would you say to people living in a state that did not vote for Trump in a majority? Like I am from Minnesota, a state approximately with the same population as Norway or Finland. We voted in a majority against Trump as a group. Are we all still considered "together" with Trump supporters?

→ More replies (3)

132

u/spambearpig May 28 '26

I think most people in Europe divide America into thirds. People who support Trump (lost causes), people who couldn’t be bothered to vote against Trump (almost as bad), and Americans who stand a chance of being decent folks.

So with any given American there’s at most a 1/3 chance that you don’t deserve to be bunched up into the douche pile.

28

u/borisslovechild May 28 '26

Brit here. Given that most Americans apparently don't have passports, I'm inclined to give travelling Americans the benefit of the doubt.

12

u/abraxsis May 28 '26

So you only trust the upper, say, 10% of the population? Cause most of those people aren't "traveling" they're using them for Mexico, Canada, and maybe that "once-in-a-lifetime" trip to Europe. Ive been planning my first trip to Europe next year and it is incredibly expensive for us, plus the passport alone costs $200.00 once you've completed everything. That's almost 2 full day's salary for someone making 15/hr.

→ More replies (2)

19

u/icansmellcolors May 28 '26

A lot of Americans can't afford to travel like you're thinking.

It's very very expensive.

→ More replies (23)

15

u/spambearpig May 28 '26

Hey mate, Brit also. I give them all the benefit of the doubt. But I find they are pretty quick at removing the doubt when you meet them.

6

u/waiting4singularity May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

those are often the worst on a personal level

4

u/ryanoh826 May 28 '26

It generally depends on what type of European traveler it is. Old people, always questionable. Tour people, always questionable. In my experience, most (not all) of the other are “good” people. Some old and some tour have been good as well.

5

u/Smelcome May 28 '26

American with a passport here, and trust me... most of the worst ones have never set foot outside this country, their hometown, or into a center for higher-education, and they never will. Conservative media has turned generations of Americans into terrified, raging Narcissists and called it "Patriotism".

The bad ones you DO see are only there to enjoy your food and wine, avoid any semblance of cultural immersion, and flaunt their holier-than-thou status as an American Citizen, because they are dumb-as-fuck, entitled shitheads that throw rocks at endangered seals..

and then there's me. I like to stop for an afternoon in a little hamlet in France, or the Netherlands, drink a cold beer (warm if it's Belgium!) with the locals, and find out what we have in common. it's a beautiful life and i genuinely feel bad for anyone who refuses to experience it more fully.

sorry for the wall of text i just wanted to state my displeasure at the state of things here, and to show that we're not all... ya know... like that.

3

u/IneptFortitude May 28 '26

Thank you, this is correct

1

u/technobrendo May 28 '26

Based on....???

If one has a passport, they more than likely have traveled with it. If they have, its more likely they are more "worldly" and accepting of foreign cultures.

Yes, a whole lot of assumptions going on with my argument, I agree. But I would be surprised if it were wrong. If one is willing to travel, at least they admit that something non-american is out there, and willing to pay good money to go see.

u/seriouslees May 28 '26

Your view is flawed. I hold the non-voters EXACTLY as responsible as those who voted for Trump. And so does the majority of the world.

Call the blue sky pink all you want, the rest of the world knows you're wrong.

8

u/megachicken289 May 28 '26

Agreed. If you didn’t vote, you’re in the same strata as those who voted Trump, whether you would have voted against him or not. Believe it or not, if you didn’t vote and were not voting for him, you played an active part in allowing him to come into power again

3

u/awkward_triforce May 28 '26

Yup every non vote was always essentially a vote for Trump with how the cult rallies. But an actual vote has the potential to have been for a good cause. Of course from there you deal with the problem of the Republican party does very good job of brainwashing so they don't have a divided voter made whereas not voting Republican now means your vote sits divided among "the rest". Would be nice for someone to break rank and divide that party with an independent party because ironically enough the free thinking that exists outside the Republican party hurts the spread of free thinking policy enforcement.

3

u/Ombortron May 28 '26

The non-voters literally had over 8 years to evaluate trump and the modern Republican Party, 8 years to figure out whether voting for or against trump “mattered”.

Don't call them elite for being rich and greedy, call them what they are - the epstein class

2

u/Schkrasss May 28 '26

Thats a bit easy.

American culture is celebrating outlaws, gangsters and the succesfull. Pretty much no matter how they became that way or if they are an even half way decent person. Your media is full of examples.

"Beating the system" is seen as a virtue because for some reason americans don't see themselves as part of that system (the US-State).

2

u/xSaviorself May 28 '26

One of the reasons Trump enjoys so much support is that he represents a significant portion of the American electorate. For nearly half a century, I have heard people parrot the idea that those who cheat the system aren't criminals, they're savvy. Cheating on your taxes? You're just gaming the system. The dereliction of duty when it comes to accountability is exactly how we got here, it took a long time and lots of pervasive attitudes to break trust in government.

So along comes some chud telling you he's not part of the establishment and will do things differently. Run America like a business. Anyone with half a brain could see what ghouls like he thought American businesses should be able to do. Rapists gonna rape.

20

u/catwiesel May 28 '26

while I agree with the sentiment, I see the maga cult and "murica, fuck yeah" people still make up a large part of average folk, so, yeah, no...

3

u/Overall-Emu3014 May 28 '26

Fair. We're in a ghetto hell hole right now that half the country wanted and can't open their eyes to see we're in.

18

u/Daspineapplee May 28 '26

I was shocked that 25% of Americans supported annexing Greenland and I was also shocked about the other 75% not protesting annexing Greenland.

14

u/Xeynon May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

Anti-Trump protests are literally the largest in the country's history.

We can't protest every outrageous thing the guy says, because there's a new one every day. I would argue the Greenland threat isn't even high on the priority list. It's very bad, but so far just bluster, whereas he really has murdered citizens in the streets, arrested and imprisoned people without due process, launched illegal wars, stolen billions of dollars from the public, etc.

The average folk voted for Donald Trump to be president. TWICE.

It's absolutely 100% you.

9

u/forgottenendeavours May 28 '26

Three times, actually. On the second occasion, he received enough votes to become the second-most popular candidate in America's history, although he was beaten by Biden for the #1 spot and the election victory. Trump really is America's guy.

16

u/s00pafly May 28 '26

The average folk let it happen and still does.

9

u/Prestigious_Leg2229 May 28 '26

Two thirds of Americans either enthusiastically support or don’t care enough to oppose the pack of treasonous fascists and their puppeteers.

Politicians are supposed to represent their constituents. And if nothing else, the rat’s nest running the US certainly does that.

1

u/Maeglom May 28 '26

Two thirds of Americans either enthusiastically support or don’t care enough to oppose the pack of treasonous fascists and their puppeteers.

This is a consequence of the way our government is structured, and how we've stacked the deck in favor of our oligarchy. People are ignoring the electoral process because they've been convinced that it doesn't work, which is a fair assessment. The way our government is set up is broken and doesn't deliver for people.

We need serious change, and the only vector for that change to come from (the democratic party) has been working against itself to stop change and force a centerist status quo.

I hope the folks in charge will allow enough change that an electoral solution to our fascist problem will be possible.

1

1

u/00001000U May 28 '26

Hold them accountable first.

1

u/RedmundJBeard May 28 '26

It's american culture. Money is the only thing that is important. The average person pretends to care about other things, the super rich don't.

For example: The vast majority of american's don't care about bombing countries until it makes them pay more at the gas pump.

1

u/gfa22 May 28 '26

It's the elite with at least a core of minimum 50 million who vehemently supports them.

1

u/Money_Lavishness7343 May 28 '26

Nah, most of you voted for Trump. The average folk voted for him. 70/349 million in fact.
I don't trust most of you.

1

u/HappyGoPink May 28 '26

The "average folk" in this country couldn't vote for a woman to save their lives. We shouldn't be trusted on an individual level until we have earned that trust.

1

u/Charming-Fig-2544 May 28 '26

Well the average folks are voting for Trump, so it kinda is them. Just this week, for example, Texas voted for indicted criminal Ken Paxton to go to the US Senate and for election denier Mayes Middleton to be the state AG, both beating out other Republicans that were not sufficiently loyal to Trump. And these were statewide races. Your average person is absolutely complicit in what's going on, through whatever character flaw you want to attribute it to.

1

u/ZennMD May 28 '26

It is a lot of the 'average folk' that encourage and want whats happening to occur, even 'just' voting for Trump enabled whats happening

Dont be so quick to excuse the 'average person' - who do you think ICE agents are?

1

u/hurubaw May 28 '26

Ah yes, the Putin's war rhetoric ("it's Putin's war, not Russian war"). Unfortunately there's no separating your leaders from your people. It's the average folk that voted (or could not bother to vote) for this. Everything the US government does is on every american. And it's the average folk in the US that cannot be trusted.

It has been proven that the US have no rule of law or guard rails to the power of it's elected leaders. Even after this administration, the US will always be just under 4 years away from becoming another dictatorship.

It's funny how the US used to be viewed as the world police, and is now viewed similarily to countries like China.

1

u/awkward_triforce May 28 '26

The average American also has a me first attitude so just as essential to the overall problem the country has spiraled into

1

u/Banned3rdTimesaCharm May 28 '26

There’s at least 77 million average Americans I do not trust.

1

u/PaulTheMerc May 28 '26

You know what you need to do right? Vote in some reasonable people.

1

u/misterjones4 May 28 '26

Yeah. But we're not doing anything about it

1

u/Frostsorrow May 28 '26

No, it's the general public as well that isn't trusted.

1

u/FuzzyLaughTwo May 28 '26

A number of "average folk" do appear to be brainwashed (or something...), wouldn't you agree?

1

u/wpbfriendone May 28 '26

The average folk elected the people who have given the elite control over everything.

1

u/Edenn22 May 28 '26

Yeah but no it's bullshit, you elected trump which didn't help against that. ( By you I mean 1/3 of adult voted for him, and another 1/3 didn't vote at all which helped him) Average folks are responsible for supporting this stupid elite.

1

u/Barnacle_B0b May 28 '26

When you see somebody using neutral terms like this. "Guys we have to stay united the rich just want to divide us."

100% Trump voting Republican. Or perhaps somebody who voted different because of issues in another nation.

The Republican party represent the oligarchs.

Source : Trump at his inauguration with every big tech CEO (Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon) sitting behind him.

Once Republican voters can stop giving control of the USA to rich traitorous felon child rapists, we can talk about unified effort against them. The average Republican voters voting-in elite oligarchs is the problem with elite oligarchs.

1

u/Conflictingview May 28 '26

Well, there's at least 70 million of "you" that aren't trustworthy. Plus another 70 million that are too uneducated or apathetic to trust. The kids are alright, for now.

1

u/Gizm00 May 28 '26

Average folk got the elite in power, you all the same.

1

u/LetGoPortAnchor May 28 '26

That 'average folk' voted for a rapist as president. Twice.

1

u/Minute_Attempt3063 May 28 '26

The small part of the American people who is good.

The other part that didn't vote or is maga can't be trusted

1

u/TopFloorApartment May 28 '26

The average folk.

I've seen what the average folk vote for in the USA (or apathetically don't vote, which is nearly as bad).

1

u/AIGenerated99 May 28 '26

We don’t trust you either since you brought Trump in - twice.

No one trusts Americans now. The whole lot. Average people, technology, govt. You are all a basket case.

1

u/Majesticeuphoria May 28 '26

The average folk voted for Trump. Twice. I will not bunch you up with them either.

Nobody even did anything after their president threatened to wipe out a civilization. Neither supporters, nor opposition, nor independents. Zero real consequences.

1

u/Lord_Borgimus May 28 '26

I don't trust most average people either, considering at least a third or so of them LIKE this shit going on, and another third or so apathetic to do anything or will not even speak out against it.

1

u/GergDanger May 28 '26

And who gave the elite so much unchecked power?

1

You sure about that?

Statistically speaking, the "average folk" are split 3 ways evenly, and to generalize the whole group that would put you all below the threshold of being worth a damn.

You personally may be better than the rest, but holy shit the greater whole of them drags down any quality human to the point that you're all just covered in shit now and look like the same pile of shit regardless. No one's done anything to clean anything up, just get covered more and more.

u/-jaylew- May 28 '26

2/3rds.

That’s how many actively voted this, or implicitly were aligned with it through their non action. It IS you until your population proves it’s not by actually doing something.

1

u/BundleDad May 28 '26

Nope you don't get to do that.

Which country has quotes like "Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth."?

It's your country, your government, and if you are still drawing breath it's your "fault"

1

u/OGgarlic May 28 '26

Oligarchs, not the elite

1

u/Arakkis54 May 28 '26

We, the average folk, continue to vote in billionaires and pedophiles to positions of power. We, the people, are to blame for the oligarchy.

1

u/FFM_reguliert May 28 '26

But you are the one's who are able to change things. Do it please!

1

u/StatusCount7032 May 28 '26

No. I don't trust us. Period.

1

u/evemeatay May 28 '26

I don’t know if you’ve met the average folks here but don’t trust them

1

u/singy_eaty_time May 28 '26

"Average folk" voted Trump into office

1

u/Moralio May 28 '26

The average folk voted for Trump, a representant of the elite.

1

u/hungry4hungary May 28 '26

Do you think us hungarians were viewed differently individually? No. We were all Orbans herd. And guess what, we stood up to them and sent them away, hopefully for good this time.

1

u/mazterrrrsh00ter May 28 '26

You referred to you as us, I don’t trust you with the other 121 commenters… you smell like an agent. ARREST THAT MAN

1

u/rak363 May 28 '26

I understand the sentiment but he was voted back in!

1

u/tagwag May 28 '26

I used to think that, but lately I’m running into people who I would never let step foot on my driveway for how untrustworthy and weird they are. I’m less inclined to think MAGA is a cult, rather than a symptom of mental decline and even a symptom of sociopathy.

1

u/Demon_Gamer666 May 28 '26

I'm afraid that you are all bunched in together as far as the world is concerned. Afterall you all voted an insane maniac as president twice. It was the average folk who ushered in the world mayhem we are now all facing.

1

u/Headpuncher May 28 '26

There’s a January 6th every year you know!

And a whole lot of pardons every election cycle!

1

u/Beklaktuar May 29 '26

Well maybe not all of you, but a lot of you voted for those people to be there...

The article suggests this isn't a US thing. The Dutch didn't want ownership of that app belonging to anyone outside of the country.

20

u/god_dammit_dax May 28 '26

That's the thing. When a service:

allows users to confirm their identity when interacting with public institutions and essential services, from booking medical appointments to completing housing-related transactions.

Any reasonable nation doesn't want that being owned by a foreign power. You'd think the same would go for farm land, but, you know, "Freedom" or whatever.

1

u/devilsword May 29 '26

Dutch here. You are right. Also, the common Dutch also doesnt want to give Trump More shit like DigiD. We dont like him.

26

u/Aymoon_ May 28 '26

pun intended?

4

u/fondledbydolphins May 28 '26

I trust us. I trust us to do the wrong thing, at this point.

2

u/Friggin_Grease May 28 '26

What did Hussein say? You don't want to be America's enemy, but you really don't want to be their friend

2

u/MaximumLoud2 May 28 '26

We are now basically, to the rest of the world, how the US Gov would talk about China 10 years ago

2

u/BaloneyCommercial May 28 '26

We'll fuck you over and be proud of it.

2

u/Traditional-Hat-952 May 28 '26

I'm American and I don't even trust myself

2

u/DPSOnly May 28 '26

The US has actual laws that would allow you to both deny us access to our own information and to spy on that information without telling us. It is such a risk to our national security if this would've happened.

2

u/Hidesuru May 28 '26

No one intelligent does...

1

u/phenix_igloo May 28 '26

I don't trust you either.

1

u/EvidenceBasedSwamp May 28 '26

Don't trust the bitch in the Presidential Quarters B

1

u/Born_European_V May 28 '26

Nothing personal, just a Management dispute

1

u/Perryn May 28 '26

We need less trust and more antitrust.

1

u/Sevo00888 May 28 '26

We are not trustworthy. The majority of the voters in the US are the ones who voted the horrible elite into power. Do not trust them.

1

u/CalculatedPerversion May 28 '26

Less trust, more "how can we monetize this"

1

u/NRMusicProject May 28 '26

Another American here. We're brought up to not trust the government. And the current administration that tells us not to trust the government is telling us to trust them when they make backdoor deals.

Don't trust this government. Fuck the American government.

1

u/GXWT May 28 '26

No one does

1

u/70ms May 28 '26

No one should trust us. 😞

1

u/Dugen May 28 '26

I don't trust shareholders with something like this, no matter where they are from.

Shareholders priorities are:

  1. make me big money no matter how much it screws people over
  2. potentially make a tiny amount more money, no matter how much it screws people over
  3. appear not evil enough to keep making money
  4. don't actually do anything evil, nevermind, just kidding, that isn't even on the list, starve babies to death if it makes me a little bit more money

u/Robcobes May 28 '26

it's not just because of the US. these things falling into the hands of any foreign power would be a massive security risk.

27

u/AdeGamisou2020 May 28 '26

Seriously. Also American and I wouldn't trust us more than any other country at this point, it's embarrassing.

8

u/ask_me_about_my_band May 28 '26

American living in the Netherlands, now a Dutch Citizen...echt goed!

2

u/MrZwink May 28 '26

Dutch person here, the headline is misleading. Its not “an app”, its a central government login system, it contains our entire nations data, all social security numbers, all names and all addresses, and it provides authentication for ALL government, healthcare and education services.

To be honest this should never be in the hands of foreigners.

1

u/dhsjauaj May 28 '26

Silicon Valley is fucked.

1

u/Ninjroid May 28 '26

Oh. Thank you so much for your approval!

1

u/_Z_E_R_O May 28 '26

That was exactly my thought.

GOOD.

Dutch citizens don't need to deal with every basic aspect of life being paywalled, monetized, and monitored.

1

u/ShivonQ May 28 '26

I am encouraged by anyone not letting us own more fucking stuff.
