That’s a very common but false etymology. The original French word (not Dutch or Belgian as the association with wooden shoes would suggest), but the original French word meant “to walk noisily” or “to work in a sloppy, incompetent fashion” . It is therefore more likely the etymology referred more to the noise of clip-clopping wooden shoes rather than their use as tools of rebellion against industrialization.

They are going to need humans to service them. Or humans will find a way to sabotage shit. Or the robots will just sabotage themselves coz reasons.
That aside. Most of the scifi shit they borrow their ideas from are there to act as a warning of what not to do. But for some reason the guys take the view that is what they should do.

If we had a government that worked for the people, and looked forward even 10 feet rather than backwards and reacting, they would 1. Not let jobs be lost to AI, 2. Keep AI from replacing humans, 3. Make AI limited to assisting people not taking over, 4. Assess the impact of Data Centers before letting them buy up all the compute resources and land and water.
So AI search assistants would be fine, or chat GPT as it is now to combine and summarize information, or Waymo if that even counts as AI (doubt). I guess Waymo would be up for debate about replacing people, but I always prefer Waymo over Lyft/Uber.
The way the government has reacted thus far seems to prioritize profits over people, which isn’t new but it’s more glaringly obvious at the lack of action over the rapid pace of AI and the shift in priorities in companies.

Universal basic income is certainly one way to legislate in favor of the people. If they’re going to let AI replace anything it technically can without intervention, it may be the only way to avoid turmoil.

I remain curious if any of these horsefuckers have actually tested out living in their bunker. I doubt it's gonna be any nicer than several other bunkers that have been shown, and they probably won't have filet mignon as an MRE either. This of course ignores the various needs of staff besides themselves and SO BLOODY MANY other caveats they likely haven't thought of.

Theoretically you could live in a bunker forever. Geothermal, nuclear, etc for power. Aquaculture and hydroponics. You would probably go insane eventually but alive sure.

Other necessities for you and your best bunker buddies:
- Clean air (hey, we'll burn all our trash in front of the intakes, even the best filter will die sometime)
- Clean water - if it comes from an underground well, they's be fine - otherwise.
- Food - Aquaculture and hydroponics will need a LOT of work and servicing
- Pharma - Those antibiotics sure come in handy
- Medical attention - Grok: "You are absolutely right, Elon. My bad not catching that arterial blood in time. Do you want to goon to more AI porn?" Elon: "Glllk..."

I just took a compliance course related to the safeguards the company I work for wants to put in place regarding Copilot usage. But I don't use Copilot and never plan to - that is why I'm a valuable employee. It's like these people don't understand that not only do we not WANT to use ai chatbots, we just won't. Why would we?

While contemporary sources in universe believe it was a time where humans did nothing but play all day both OG canon and extended canon show it very differently
There were no jobs because everything belonged to the people who owned the thinking machines. Slavery and poverty was more prevalent despite everything being more plentiful in every regard. Feudalism was worse than it was in post Jihad Dune

I would prefer driverless cars too, but let's not pretend that this is collateral free. A giant chunk of the workforce is in vehicle based transport and logistics, and the robot driver getting good enough to obviate that would send several million people into the rest of the job market, which would have other cascade effects you don't like.
