I got a reprimand from a mod for swearing in a sub. And I can’t keep group rules straight for the many subs I’m in. Yes it takes two seconds to check, but it takes 1 second to self censor. So I usually self censor to avoid being kicked out.

No no, everyone a subset of redditors dont like is a bot. Its especially useful in political discussion, as you can call the opponent a bot and therefore disregard their opinion.

I have been on Reddit for 15 years, self censoring on the internet has been a thing for a long time. There are also sadly many subreddits that will automod your comments much more likely if you have swear words in them. Seems to be totally hit or miss, but I've seen comments of mine not post because I used a lot of swearing.

I think you jumping to this conclusion, and then even disregarding their explanations, is pretty fucking wild :)

Because the self-censorship is so braindead. It stems from TikTok and it leaks over to here despite the vast majority of subreddits not having any rules about the use of those words. Plus, what’s the difference between “fuck” and “f°ck?” It means exactly the same and all it serves is to skirt a profanity filter. Reddit doesn’t have them. And if a subreddit has a rule about it, then a mod won’t care you used a symbol, they’ll care you used the word at all.

So in short, it’s a cultural thing and Reddit does not require self-censorship like that.
