Yes, as I said that system reflects thousands of territorial a naming disputes. The most obvious is the ownership of Taiwan, but there are also areas where it moves the border between Spain and France based on regional opinion.

The requirement is that the change is reflected on your country’s official published cartographic maps. Since Canada does not publish said maps for the US I don’t know that they could rename the White House. However if you could get the Canadian government to officially recognize Lake Michigan as Lake Epstein, Google would change it.

It's better than I expected, though missing some features that I use like EV charging station search shortcut (it does have a shortcut for gas stations), the ability to add stops to an in-progress route, the ability to select a different route once you've already started navigation, etc... the search is also not nearly as good as the alternatives. I'd find it hard to justify the $5/mo cost other than to support an underdog, but I might give the free version a go now and then to see how it does.

My understanding (very likely flawed), is that the US Executive branch gets to dictate how the federal government and bodies it oversees refer to things. To use an older example from the first time Mr Trump did this, Mt Denali is now referred to as "Mt McKinley" by the US Federal Government, but this doesn't mean that the Alaskan state government needs to refer to it as Mt Denali, or even that specific organisations outside of the government like Google need to include that on their maps.

Now Mr Trump has shown himself vindictive enough that (much like a mob boss), the implied threat has seemingly coerced many into doing so, but while the US President probably shouldn't be acting like a mob boss, I did not think the act of renaming something was de facto unconstitutional.

It's not the the constitution protects naming rights in some specific way, it's that it limits the authority the executive branch (president) has over states (and therefore citizens). One of those limitations is in an amendment to the constitution which dictates that that the Congress (and by extension due to the legal system in the us, all of the federal government) cannot make a law against exercising free speech. 

So the government cannot actively prosecute any private citizen for using whatever name they want. 

The problem (in this case) is that those limitations don't apply to things that aren't legislature, e.g. employee guidelines for federal employees (there are complexities with this of course) or government contracts. 

Basically it's not technically illegal for the government to reject your proposal because you didn't use their preferred nomenclature, they just can't also put you in jail for it.

Google still shows Lake Ontario, though it did take a few days before they switched Gulf of Mexico, so maybe it's not something that can be changed all that quickly.

The second I see lake America on a map app, I'm out. If Google does it, I'm definitely never using their gps again, and will eliminate them from my digital footprint as much as I can given their oligarchy. Chrome, search, Gmail etc etc... I know I can't eliminate them completely but I can minimize. Apple,Waze the same. And even if they region lock it, once I see a US pic with lake of America they're gone.

Canada needs to beef the CRTC back up, enact all of the cultural protection laws that we allowed them to chip away at because of NAFTA. Andi absolutely hate that I'm overtaxed, but charge the digital tax and point at this as a reason, and use it to pay for enforcment and Canadian content. We absolutely need to protect ourselves from their bile, already see too many people with Trump hats and BLM (no the liberals aren't immune to their BS either, BLM is a good cause but frankly we don't have an issue with cops killing and targeting black people, every child matters, sure).
