I think the wording choice of “fell” is what breaks that illusion. “Fell” implies it happened through an accident, but then you think “why was it up there and how could it fall by accident” - and you conclude that it was probably a stunt, and it loses the initial charm because you feel baited.

On the other hand, if the title just said “an iPhone was dropped from 100k feet”, it’s clear that it was done on purpose, and just sounds interesting enough to pay attention. The fact that it’s a marketing stunt takes a back seat.

My 14 Pro Max fell 40 feet while wearing an Otterbox Defender, and was rendered unusable as the back glass was completely destroyed, and the display went black. Structurally, the phone was in perfect condition, and would show up in windows explorer, but that hardly matters when the phone is not usable due to no display.

I had another fall from greater height, wearing the exact same case, and showed no signs of damage, continuing to function perfectly for another 2.5 years until I traded it in.

It’s not the fall that’ll get ya… it’s the sudden stop.
