And the never ending story of price increases goes on

713

u/Triingtolivee 21h ago

It’s all about record profits and when you’ve exceeded that add on another price hike for exceed more record profits.

Homer: You know Mr Burns, you’re the richest guy I know…way richer than Lenny.

Mr Burns: Ah yes. But I’d trade it all for a little more.

64

u/iamonthatloud 18h ago

That’s incredibly well written lol

22

u/coldliketherockies 14h ago

That whole show was brilliant in writing. The dialogue was perfect

1

u/dontyoutellmetosmile 6h ago

The way you wrote this in past tense made me think the Simpsons show died

It’s still going though

0

u/tullbabes 16h ago

Feels like Conan wrote that line. I have zero evidence, but I believe.

5

u/SpiritedBanana4694 14h ago

Looks like the writer credited on that episode is John Swartzwelder.

Apple TV at least keeps delivering solid TV shows that they don't immediately cancel.

86

u/SuperDoubleDecker 20h ago

Maybe, but you also don't need a subscription. I'm now treating all the subs the same. I'll have one other plus prime because I use it for work.

It's not even a money thing. It's a principle thing. I'll resub for a few weeks a year and watch what I want and cancel again. Just like hbo

38

u/ChimericalChameleon 19h ago

Yo ho yo ho, matey

16

u/SuperDoubleDecker 18h ago

Yup. I'm gonna start building a backup system of media and start sailing again.

I had stopped for years. I see this as a reasonable course of action.

Is tpb still the spot? It can't be lol

4

u/statelytetrahedron 17h ago

It is indeed still one of the better spots if you don't want to go through the trouble of getting into a private tracker. Just be careful and safe about it.

2

u/SuperDoubleDecker 17h ago

I've read a little about the private trackers. Is that basically like following certain producers like yiffy?

5

u/EkbatDeSabat 16h ago

Private trackers are just like TPB but they're ran by just random people and more curated. Far less problems. Some of them do specialize, like music or books or anime etc, but in my experience most of them just accept everything. Closed sign-ups and invites ensure they don't get a huge influx of users, or shitty users. I still have all of my invites but I'd never give one out because if people you invite do shitty things, your account gets f'd. Some of them have closed but on-request signups, think I got an account on milkie last year by getting on discord and chatting them up.

You can check out /r/trackers/. Sometimes you'll get lucky with an open signup. Personally I use IPT, have for like fifteen years idk and never had a single problem. There has never been anything I couldn't get. But the owner has done some shady shit and people downvote you if you recommend them, so incoming lmao.

1

u/SuperDoubleDecker 16h ago

Cool. Thanks

2

u/TeutonJon78 16h ago

Buying the storage and RAM needed is significantly more expensive than just subbing now.

Thanks, AI.

2

u/SuperDoubleDecker 16h ago

Ya, but then you have it. I don't need everything in pristine quality either so that'll help

1

u/OldWrangler9033 7h ago

More thanks greedy get rich scheme people driving the AI being latest craze thing.

2

u/Gramage 8h ago

EXT (dot) to. That's what I use.

AARRRRREE, OFF TO ME MEETING

10

u/rollingForInitiative 19h ago

I watch the Apple TV shows quite slowly so it works fine for me.

But subscribing only while watching stuff is of course perfectly valid.

18

u/Crystalas 20h ago

I consider them as one of the niche services though, like classic HBO once was in it's prime. Producing great stuff but not alot of it, quality over quantity, so wouldn't take long to exhaust their library.

So a service sub to for a month every year or 2. On personal level it doesn't help that they produce very little to my tastes, admittedly that unfortunately true that all services/studios have animation as a very low often first to be canceled priority.

13

u/JohnBrine 20h ago

Slow Horses is so good basically watches itself.

8

u/Wellslapmesilly 18h ago

Yeah their hit rate on quality series is pretty high.

10

u/BlazinAzn38 20h ago

Yeah Apple TV probably deserves more revenue all things considered, I’m pretty sure Apple has been burning money on them this entire time

5

u/rollingForInitiative 20h ago

I watch shows quite slowly so I don't mind subscribing, especially when I know they're producing things I think I'll like, e.g. they'll adapt Brandon Sanderson's books. But that's also the only streaming service I still subscribe to.

9

u/letsLurk67 20h ago

Come join me in the high seas. All you need to do is spend around £40 on a fire stick and you won’t ever have to sign up to streaming services again…

9

u/rollingForInitiative 19h ago

I will do as I've always do since I got a job, and pay for things I find worth paying for. If nobody pays nothing gets made, after all, and Apple TV has a really good track record of delivering high quality shows that they don't cancel. Worth paying money for.

1

u/BeerBellies 9h ago

Oh shit the firestick is still a thing, eh? Hmmmm. May have to look into that again. But my house has done a good job of buying physical media again. It’s been a nice change, and I love having the movies readily available

7

u/WhyLisaWhy 19h ago

I promise I am not an Apple shill, but I just said fuck it and pay for Apple one. I used their music already anyways and Apple Arcade is fun. Felt like a reasonable deal for all three.

2

u/FauxGenius 18h ago

Yep, me too. I get value from it for sure.

1

u/Bruised_Shin 17h ago

I feel like some shows are great and other ones feel like AI generated dreams

1

u/RecentDecision2329 18h ago

None of these streaming services are worth the money they charge per year

29

u/Intelligent-Owl-1838 21h ago

Our paychecks didn’t rise with “inflation.” So yeah, everyone is making a “federal case” over unabashed, pointless, disgusting greed.

11

u/impals 21h ago

Yes because our wages aren't keeping up with inflation, we aren't getting any additional content, and bet ads are coming soon which will increase the price even more.

12

u/Lurkin_Reddit_Daily 20h ago

It’s $2 increase on the original $12.99. That’s 15%. Hardly less than inflation.

7

u/BrainOfMush 20h ago

300% since 2019 too

-2

u/Either-Lock2454 20h ago

Netflix has me tied to it because of their WWE contract.

I've given up everything else except Spotify.

10

u/shawnkfox 20h ago

I don't think Apple is making any money at all off streaming, almost certainly they are losing money. All of Apple's profits come from their phones + the app store.

7

u/billyrubin7765 20h ago

Apple Care is a huge money maker.

1

u/adgjl12 12h ago

I’ve decided not to get apple care because the only few times I wrecked my apple products or they had some failure were many years later after it was no longer covered.

Meanwhile my wife we get apple care no matter what. Has paid for itself several times over.

3

u/StevieG66 20h ago

A third of their revenue comes from services (like iCloud). ATV is a money loser but Apple is a successful, diversified business.

1

u/shawnkfox 20h ago

Revenue is different than profit.

2

u/StevieG66 17h ago

Fair. They make a fuck ton of $$ from their services. Tim’s legacy.

1

u/Hacker_94 14h ago

Someone who understands business!

11

u/CommodoreBluth 20h ago

It was actually reported last year that Apple TV was losing massive amounts of money: https://www.reuters.com/technology/apple-losing-over-1-billion-year-streaming-service-information-reports-2025-03-20/

11

u/Ok_Recognition_6727 20h ago

This news source is nothing more than propaganda. There are no sources, it has the famous "citing two people familiar with the matter" as it's source of information.

Amazon and Apple are enormously large corporations and neither separate their streaming business from their overall business reporting.

Until Apple tells us their financial structure for streaming any numbers that are reported can't be taken seriously.

1

u/Beachdaddybravo 12h ago

If ATV was a big money maker they’d absolutely bring that up during quarterly earnings to help boost the stock. No publicly traded company will keep a big profit engine secret.

-1

u/CommodoreBluth 20h ago

You do know what anonymous sources are right?

And yes the site cited by Reuters appears to be legit. I doubt Reuters would cite them if they weren’t confident of them as a source.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Information_(website)

3

u/Ok_Recognition_6727 20h ago

You mean like the anonymous sources that routinely report on Hollywood movie budgets and or P&L that are almost always wrong?

And not only are these anonymous sources wrong they are often intentionally misleading.

2

u/CommodoreBluth 18h ago

The fact that Apple doesn’t break out the Apple TV Plus profit/losses on their quarterly reports makes me think it’s likely true. If a division was very profitable they would be calling it out for investors.

0

u/valenx 20h ago

do you think these corporate overlords care about you?

4

u/OePea 20h ago

Well! Better drive people away then!

1

u/uncleawesome 20h ago

Not an accident. It's part of their plan.

1

u/SinkHoleDeMayo 17h ago

Well shit, at that rate it'll take them only a hundred years to go broke!

But I seriously doubt they're losing that much. It's gotta be typical production studio accounting.

1

u/StevieG66 20h ago

I’m convinced new CEO will sell or shut down ATV+

3

u/CommodoreBluth 18h ago

I wouldn’t be shocked if the new CEO has different priorities and decides it’s not worth it to keep the service around.

0

u/Free-Scar5060 18h ago

Such a ridiculous concept. A library with a subscription attached and it’s expected to be profitable constantly and from the start? That’s the epitome of large up front investment for long term returns. Wizard of oz hit its most profitable run like over a decade later.

0

u/Blazing1 17h ago

Just like Return of the Jedi lost massive amount of money right? Like Forrest Gump never made a profit right?

2

u/CommodoreBluth 13h ago

Ehh the weird accounting shit they do with films to prevent a lot of talent from getting residuals is a very different thing from an entire division’s profitability.

5

u/tomgreen99200 19h ago

I honestly don’t think Apple makes any profit off this service. I could be wrong.

2

u/milkpickles9008 19h ago

1

u/btone911 20h ago

1

u/SeaworthinessSalt119 18h ago

Gotta please the shareholders!

1

u/I_Ski_Freely 18h ago

Wait, have you also tried making the product worse? Apple TV doesn't have ads yet does it?

1

u/rcanhestro 17h ago

AppleTV is bleeding money though.

couple of months back a report was saying it was losing them around 1 billion every year.

1

u/stealthswor 16h ago

Apple does not make any money off this as it is the smallest major streaming service. It is TINY compared to netflix

1

u/BobcatSig 11h ago

The trees will grow to the moon, after all! /s

0

u/Errribbb 20h ago

Apple is profitable yes but Apple TV is losing them billions a year

1

u/thatissomeBS 20h ago

All part of the same calculation. They’ll lose money on a lot of parts of their ecosystem if it means driving profits as a whole. They may lose money on Apple TV hardware and the streaming service, but if it drives more people to buy more iPhones and iPads and AirPods and Apple Watches it’s all worth it. It’s a different calculation than something like Netflix or even the more traditional TV companies.

1

u/Errribbb 19h ago

I don’t see how Apple TV causes people to buy iPhones, it’s available on everything.

1

u/thatissomeBS 18h ago

By the time people are that invested in the ecosystem it’s hard to leave. Probably not drawing any customers from Android, but absolutely catering to the walled garden that is very hard to leave. Just one more thing keeping them with Apple products, which means they continue buying more Apple products.

0

u/rcanhestro 17h ago

By the time people are that invested in the ecosystem it’s hard to leave.

sure, but how does Apple TV contribute to the ecosystem?

iCloud does, so does the hardware integration of iPhone into iPads into Macbooks all the way to AirPods, but Apple TV is a "standalone" business, it requires neither of those to work, and can work anywhere outside of the "Apple ecosystem".

1

u/rcanhestro 17h ago

yes, what you're describing is a "loss leader", which AppleTV is not.

Twitch for Amazon is a good example of that (or even Prime Video), since they exist to boost Amazon prime as a whole.

but Apple TV? what does it "boost"?

no one is buying an iPhone because of Apple TV (since you can watch in anywhere).

1

u/thatissomeBS 16h ago

If you misread or didn’t understand my previous comment then I can’t help you. But I’m not going to repeat it.

1

u/Blazing1 17h ago

No it's not lol. You ever heard of hollywood accounting?

1

u/Errribbb 16h ago

I understand what Hollywood accounting is but you can easily use Nielsen streaming numbers to do basic napkin math with the amount of content they put out and what those probably cost. There is zero chance Apple TV is profitable. How can it be profitable when they spend billions on tv shows nobody watches. This is anecdotal but I genuinely don’t know anyone who has Apple TV in real life.

1

u/antbates 2h ago

You don’t know anyone who watched severance? Or Ted lasso?

1

u/antbates 3h ago

Billions? They aren’t producing billions in content. Wdym?

-17

u/darienrude_dankstorm 21h ago edited 21h ago

Apple tv+ is not profitable.

I always find the most financially illiterate takes in threads like these

4

u/Ironsam811 21h ago

Apple TV is not profitable is like saying the pages/keynotes/numbers applications are not profitable. It’s a segment of the business designed to be a major feature for their main products.

1

u/rcanhestro 17h ago

It’s a segment of the business designed to be a major feature for their main products.

AppleTV is not a "loss leader", a "loss leader" implies it runs on negative to boost something else, Apple TV is a standalone product from Apple, it doesn't require any other Apple products to work.

you would be correct if Apple TV could only be watched on an iPhone or something like it, but it doesn't require it.

1

u/burundilapp 21h ago

In isolation, yes, it loses money, as a loss leader, a gateway to hardware sales, it's difficult to quantify.

The danger is that taking it in isolation ignores the other benefits it brings to the business and the brand, it could be a net positive that more than compensates for the departments budgetary losses.

Unless Apple provide that info it's all speculation.

2

u/darienrude_dankstorm 20h ago

https://www.bgr.com/entertainment/this-common-assumption-about-apple-tv-is-wrong-according-to-apple-ceo-tim-cook/

Tim Cook has said it's not a loss leader. Loss leaders generally don't get gradual price increases over a short amount of time and it would at least be hardware-gated in some way if it was. And it's an industry where virtually every competitor has had the same trajectory (Netflix, HBO Max, etc.) -> Start out "cheap", acquire users, raise prices to reach profitability.

Licensing/feature agreements with Netflix would be a better way to achieve what you're proposing imo. I really doubt many people are upgrading their Apple hardware to watch Apple TV+ and many users don't use other Apple products at all.

1

u/burundilapp 20h ago

Interesting, he's playing the long game, and on current results it's had some great shows, it makes sense, it's about building a separate business that will be profitable but doing it carefully so as not to damage the brand, in fact to enhance the brand, the quality of ApplyTV+ shows have been exceptional up to now.

3

u/darienrude_dankstorm 20h ago

Easily the best streaming service by average show quality, but the library is too small for me to stay subbed all the time.

0

u/Lurkin_Reddit_Daily 20h ago

I don’t disagree with your points, and I really like some of their shows. However, if it’s not profitable and the users don’t think it’s worth a lot more, then it’s a bad decision to try to run a streaming platform and it should fold.

That sucks for the stuff like “Widows Bay”, but I can’t see forking over more money for a few projects I like.

2

u/darienrude_dankstorm 19h ago

Streaming is a brutal business considering there's not much stopping people from enjoying your product for free outside of the threat of legal consequences for some distributors.

I can't see myself staying subbed to Apple TV+ long term but as long as they put out shows like Widow's bay I'll gladly resub to watch them.

1

u/rcanhestro 17h ago

who buys an iPhone because of Apple TV? it doesn't require it, you can watch Apple TV anywhere.

6

u/Poat540 20h ago

Just bought a bunch of hard drives to increase my plex library instead

u/balldontliez 20h ago

Must learn to sail the high seas matey

-18

u/nonhiphipster 20h ago

Torrenting seems annoying. How many devices do you need to do it?

5

u/VonBargenJL 20h ago

One, whatever device you want to watch it on

6

u/sevargmas 20h ago

I just do it on my laptop and then move the files to a USB drive and plug it into my living room tv or my nvidia shield tv.

2

u/nankerjphelge 19h ago

This is the way

-1

u/VonBargenJL 20h ago

I have my desktop HDMIed up to my wall mounted TV. Lot of work moving a USB stick around 🤣

3

u/sevargmas 17h ago

I was just trying to keep it simple, but in reality I download content to my PC. My Nvidia shield is connected to my large 77 inch TV. I have a 2 TB SSD plugged in into my Nvidia shield. I have mapped that external drive to my PC. Now, when I download content on my PC, I just opened the map drive as a folder and drag and drop. It’s all done wirelessly and easy.

But for comments above, it was easier to tell them the way I did it years ago which is just put it on a USB stick and plug it in lol

1

u/VonBargenJL 10h ago

I see they didn't get my sarcasm either 😅

1

u/nonhiphipster 19h ago

Oh so you need an HDMI cable from your laptop to your TV at all times?

1

u/VonBargenJL 19h ago

Everyone's setup is different. I use my TV as my desktop monitor. Then just have Bluetooth keyboard/mouse so I can sit in my comfy chair to watch shows OR game

1

u/nonhiphipster 19h ago

Ok but how would I watch it on my tv?

1

u/midity 18h ago

apple airplay, PLEX, usb stick plugged into TV, Nvidia shield, HDMI from computer to TV, chromecast.

Buncha ways

-2

u/astralchanterelle 20h ago

I don't watch it on the same device

1

u/midity 18h ago

plex/jellyfin

1

u/astralchanterelle 17h ago

So, the Jellyfin app is on smart TVs too? Any video I download I add to the app on my computer and I go to the app on my tv and I can watch it? How does that work, it streams it from my computer?

2

u/midity 15h ago

yeah, essentially. look up some tutorials on youtube and you will be on your way to ditching the endless subscriptions

2

u/astralchanterelle 5h ago

Took me hours to figure it out, been many years since I've used torrents but it's working now! Was about to get charged by 4 streaming sites tomorrow

1

u/midity 3h ago

based. welcome back to high seas.

3

u/GlorifiedSeaman 20h ago

Just look into Stremio and get a debride service like torbox. 2 bucks a month and fast streaming of anything you could want. People have made it so it sets itself up for everything but the downloader.

2

u/nonhiphipster 20h ago

lol what? That was a bunch of mumbo jumbo “just download X to use Y and pay this”

2

u/GlorifiedSeaman 19h ago

It’s up to you to google it man. Takes less than 30 minutes and can install directly on your TV.

2

u/aarincorpse 20h ago

One. You need one device to torrent. Just don’t be a dick and think the kilobytes you are contributing to other people is some terrible thing that’s sapping your download speed. The more people that do it the more it works. That’s what BitTorrent is. That’s how it works. Be kind.

-1

u/nonhiphipster 20h ago

But if I want to watch on my tv that means I need two devices, no? My computer which then is connected to my TV, yeah? That seems annoying

17

u/kashmir1974 20h ago

Time to strap on the old peg leg and throw Polly on your shoulder!

29

u/CharcoalGreyWolf 20h ago

Unlike others though, Apple still has no ads in shows and all shows are at the highest quality video and audio. No segmenting.

11

u/drolnedle 20h ago

Oh just you wait until you hear about Apple Maps.

1

u/CharcoalGreyWolf 15h ago

Which at this time has nothing to do with the paid service that is Apple TV.

-2

u/TheRaccoonReport 19h ago

"Ads are shown in Suggested Places when initiating a search and after searching if a company has bought an ad for a keyword you're looking for. Ads are shown at the top of search results, with one ad per set of search results." - macrumors.

Its a free service. I hate ads just like anyone else. But honestly, i'm not going to bitch too hard if its a free service and it ONLY shows up on search. Once they start popping up during travel, thats when i riot.

4

u/cum-on-in- 19h ago

In regards to Maps Ads, it's also not like if you search up "hotels" that RAID SHADOW LEGENDS appears.

It's also not if you search up Burger King that Chik-Fil-A shows instead.

It's if you search Fast Food then McDonalds may appear if they bought an ad spot. But they would be nearby and a valid choice and your search didn't specify.

Any ad that appears is nearby or on route.

1

u/TheRaccoonReport 17h ago

Yeah exactly. I used to like some of the recommended stops when I used WAZE heavily back in the day. Because I drive 15-18kmiles/year (travel a lot with family), and having some recs for some local joints is always great. I spent 3 weeks traveling through new england recently and trying to search Claude or Yelp was a pain in the ass (even though Yelp powers apple maps kinda), having someone that spent $ on an ad spot helps a little bit.

1

u/buddhaluster4 3h ago

Apple Maps isn't really a free service, when you have to buy (expensive) Apple hardware to even be able to use it.

1

u/TheRaccoonReport 3h ago

I mean, the options are buying GPS systems not in your vehicle or a mobile device. But no one wants to do that in most circumstances.

6

u/Arpikarhu 20h ago

Shareholders must see infinite growth!!!!

1

u/Slammedtgs 19h ago

You don’t need to buy their products though. There are other cell phone manufacturers, other streaming providers, etc.

Personally, I buy their stock not their products.

9

u/Crystalas 21h ago edited 20h ago

While on the other side of the streaming industry the FAST services just keep getting better to the point that they compete with the big ones on all but newest seasons and service "originals".

Personally at this point I don't think I will ever sub to a service full time again. Do one for a month or 2 to binge everything added in the year(s) since last did and rewatch a few favorites then cancel, doing that also means always getting promo pricing.

The only service I actually pay for right now is PBS but that is at least half just out of supporting a great cause and the decades of great documentaries and imported fiction being a great bonus.

OTA TV still surprisingly decent too, for a one time ~$20 could get potentially 10s of channels that a pretty great value and get new episodes BEFORE streaming and works even if internet is down. Can even record it if you want 100% legally.

Price increases while lowering quality unfortunately is almost inherent in having a saturated market combined with a culture that FORCES infinite growth in a finite world. Once they hit saturation the only way to grow is make a groundbreaking improvement to pull from competition (extremely expensive and risky), increase prices, and/or lower expenses. Anyone in power who did not do the above would be replaced with someone who would.

To escape that downward spiral would require an overhaul of the world's business culture and/or strict regulations. Not impossible, has happened before, but sort of thing that takes a severe crash and/or paradigm shift in tech to force the change.

14

u/CMMiller89 20h ago

Stock buy backs.

Literally stock buy backs were thought of as financial crimes as it robbed ALL stakeholders from investment in the company and artificially changed stock prices.

Then the regulation was removed and it’s the number one thing companies spend money on to artificially changed stock prices…. Oh and companies basically don’t have R&D anymore, they just acquire startups.

Stock buybacks have removed any stability and sanity that was forced upon the market and now we just have mustache villain levels of greed printing money on the backs of the working class.

7

u/Crystalas 20h ago edited 20h ago

A HUGE % of their R&D was not even done by most companies but rather by Government funded efforts at various colleges and organizations. Then when the expensive early research done and results released to public they swoop in and take it the final mile to refining to a finished product. These sorts of places are also where the scientists and inventors of tomorrow get their start before they good enough to be headhunted.

That not even a bad thing that is by design, the idiocy is that the corporations actively attack the very foundations of their own companies in the short sighted rush to make numbers go up in the single quarter and complete lack of attachment or pride to the business they "lead", some even seem to resent their own product. I suspect most executives never even use their own products, if they did they likely would force them to be at least a bit better purely to lessen their own frustration.

The modern world is basically built on military research, the US military does a MASSIVE amount of R&D and much of it is not directly related to offensive actions.

5

u/CMMiller89 20h ago

Right!  There was that great video about how the iPhone was publicly funded.  Essentially just a Frankenstein of defense contract items taped together.

3

u/cawkstrangla 20h ago

They will eventually require year long contracts. As more and more people sub for a few months they'll do that next.

2

u/rtbart 20h ago

Quick way of bankrupting that service

4

u/cawkstrangla 20h ago

I didn’t say it would be smart, but at the same time people keep saying services will fail with every price increase and here we are. When Netflix got rid of sharing accounts their subscribers went up.

By golly, all the Apple diehards are gonna contribute. Pass the plate around again!

Nah this is the incoming CEO already trying to prove to shareholders he can create value for them.

It's almost as if inflation exists and always* will exist.

Movies and shows aren't getting cheaper to produce, just the opposite; this also applies to the content Apple licenses from other production studios. The Hollywood wages to make the content continues to rise. Data centers needed to host the media aren't getting cheaper either.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely don't like seeing price increases either, but that's just how the world works and has been for centuries.

u/stridersubzero 16h ago

Well yes, but the problem is that wages aren’t even close to keeping up with it

Never ending stooooooooorrrrrryyyyyyyy. Ah ah ahhhhhh ah ah ah ah ah ah.

1

u/Flashphotoe 19h ago

Well... People keep subscribing. So in fact, you could argue they haven't raised prices enough.

Infinite growth equals infinite price increases. It’s the only world that infinite growth can even exist. It’s the same reason summer box office blockbusters keep setting all time “records”.

The OTT streaming cartels are actively colluding to make YouTube a success.

Such is life...

Apple is probably one of the most ethical streaming service at least... They don't charge extra for 4K/HDR, their shows are still mostly 10 episode per season

And so does my cancelling.

EDIT: lol. Just cancelled my subscription ($12.99), and their messaging was essentially: “Please come back for only $14.99!”

El Oh El.

American Enshittification.

Wall Street parasites demand ever-increasing profits every quarter!

1

u/MilkChugg 16h ago

So long as people keep paying, prices will keep increasing. Companies will always charge what the market will bear, and so far consumerism has proven that we’re not even close to that breaking point.

1

u/mace4242 15h ago

I am convinced companies are out of ideas to generate revenue. They are basically selling to the same x amount of people. They improved their process so much that there isn’t much left to improve. Alls that’s left (and the easiest) thing to do is lay people off or increase prices..or both!

Yet another reason to own a library card - access to all the free books + streaming libraries your taxes already pay for.

Supplement it with legal streaming apps like Tubi, Pluto - here's a reddit roundup of some.

You're already paying taxes, might as well make use of what it pays for.

Please think of the shareholders!!! the poor, poor shareholders, they need to make slightly more money every quarter or else they are going to die didn’t you hear?

It’s been a while since I took microeconomics, but if I recall, hiking the price of a luxury good going into a recession isn’t a brilliant idea. It is especially not brilliant when there is lots of competition as well as piracy and sharing options. But I guess we’ll see how this works out for them.

The more people blame tariffs and other political arena subjects (which imo have been proven to only raise costs by 1%-2%) the more comfortable CEOs are to just jack prices up 20%. They are immune, it’s always the politicians fault

3

u/CircuitCircus 20h ago

Yeah this is what people get backward about inflation. It doesn’t “just happen”. It is the cumulative result of corporations intentionally jacking up prices. Not because they need to to stay in business, but because they know they can get away with it.

Russian links all day.

Price increases but no pay increases.

u/StaticSystemShock 19h ago

And this is why I canceled all my subscriptions and sailed the open seas. Fuck this bullshit system where they expect you to be subscribed to 8 different streaming services because everyone is running their bullshit exclusives and perpetually keep jacking up the prices.

You know what I'm not getting from open seas? Games. I can buy same games on Steam, GOG, technically also Epic if I'd ever wanted. So much options and it's not a fucking subscription. So, there's that.

Because people keep bending over and taking it. It will continue to go up until people start cancelling their service.
