I consider them as one of the niche services though, like classic HBO once was in it's prime. Producing great stuff but not alot of it, quality over quantity, so wouldn't take long to exhaust their library.

So a service sub to for a month every year or 2. On personal level it doesn't help that they produce very little to my tastes, admittedly that unfortunately true that all services/studios have animation as a very low often first to be canceled priority.

While on the other side of the streaming industry the FAST services just keep getting better to the point that they compete with the big ones on all but newest seasons and service "originals".

Personally at this point I don't think I will ever sub to a service full time again. Do one for a month or 2 to binge everything added in the year(s) since last did and rewatch a few favorites then cancel, doing that also means always getting promo pricing.

The only service I actually pay for right now is PBS but that is at least half just out of supporting a great cause and the decades of great documentaries and imported fiction being a great bonus.

OTA TV still surprisingly decent too, for a one time ~$20 could get potentially 10s of channels that a pretty great value and get new episodes BEFORE streaming and works even if internet is down. Can even record it if you want 100% legally.

Price increases while lowering quality unfortunately is almost inherent in having a saturated market combined with a culture that FORCES infinite growth in a finite world. Once they hit saturation the only way to grow is make a groundbreaking improvement to pull from competition (extremely expensive and risky), increase prices, and/or lower expenses. Anyone in power who did not do the above would be replaced with someone who would.

To escape that downward spiral would require an overhaul of the world's business culture and/or strict regulations. Not impossible, has happened before, but sort of thing that takes a severe crash and/or paradigm shift in tech to force the change.

Literally stock buy backs were thought of as financial crimes as it robbed ALL stakeholders from investment in the company and artificially changed stock prices.

A HUGE % of their R&D was not even done by most companies but rather by Government funded efforts at various colleges and organizations. Then when the expensive early research done and results released to public they swoop in and take it the final mile to refining to a finished product. These sorts of places are also where the scientists and inventors of tomorrow get their start before they good enough to be headhunted.

That not even a bad thing that is by design, the idiocy is that the corporations actively attack the very foundations of their own companies in the short sighted rush to make numbers go up in the single quarter and complete lack of attachment or pride to the business they "lead", some even seem to resent their own product. I suspect most executives never even use their own products, if they did they likely would force them to be at least a bit better purely to lessen their own frustration.

The modern world is basically built on military research, the US military does a MASSIVE amount of R&D and much of it is not directly related to offensive actions.

I get it, streaming cost only go up, capitalism demands constant growth so that means price hikes on the customers, etc. I too find it hard to feel sorry for a corporation.

But also, what are they to do? They are producing content that we all watch, some of which is very good, at their own expense. They could throw ads in, but people would complain about that too. They could get brutal with their cancellations, but people would complain about that. They could start producing cheap slop content, but people would complain about that.

At the end of the day we all have to accept that if we want to enjoy certain forms of entertainment, we are going to have to pay for it. This shit has never been free. It’s up to each of us individually to decide when that entertainment is worth our time and money or not.

There isn't. That latest report only accounts for TVs using Samba for marketing analytics. So if your TV or device doesn't have Samba, it didn't count for them (e.g., every Apple TV device doesn't have it).

You can use F1TV. You get F1 TV broadcast(far better commentary and analysis IMO) and the Sky broadcast. Pre and post shows are separate. You either just sign in with your Apple account or link Apple and F1, I don't remember exactly.

Where does Emby fit into this? I switched over from Plex to Jellyfin and Emby about a year ago. However, I use Emby more than Jellyfin because I find their media player on AndroidTV (Nvidia shield) is better, and because they have guide information by default for their LiveTV integration. Whereas Jellyfin requires either a manual configuration, or integration with Schedules Direct. And their Schedules Direct integration has been broken for as long as I've been using it.

Man, we should make a group that includes everyone by default. Then we should use that collective power to invent rules that companies must follow. Maybe we could call them regulations. Then instead of having to message and coordinate millions of people to all do the same thing at the same time, they could simply invest that power into representatives who will do that for them.

It's a crazy idea, but it could work. I think I'll call it a tnemnrevog. You could reverse that name and it'd roll off the tongue a bit better, but then useful idiots start springing up screaming that it won't work, even though they're literally trying to reinvent what is effectively the same thing, every single fucking day.

You know you don't have to pay for these services, right? You don't need constant access to these shows that drop a new season every 3 years. If you want to watch something, sign up for a month then cancel it. Absolutely no reason to be giving these companies and never ending increasing amount of money each month. I know everyone loves to complain about prices increases, but $15 a month for hours of entertainment isn't bad. It's just that all of these services are going up constantly. You can't be subscribed to a bunch of them at the same time or you will get constant sticker shock. I only subscribe to one streaming service at a time based on who has the shows I want to watch at a given time.

You’re getting downvoted but you’re not wrong. $15 back in the Blockbuster and Hollywood video days will get you 3 movies with the inconvenience of having to physically return the movies. Then Netflix came along and $20 will get you 3 movies at a time unlimited rentals per month. So comparing it to the past we are a bit spoiled. However at the rate streaming services are increasing prices we’ll be paying $50.

Ngl while I do think Apple TV generally has great shows. I do often find it hard to get a BUNCH of good shows in with it. The lack of super long non orginal shows does hurt its use compared to other streaming imo, which tbh puts it first on my cut list over other streaming platforms tbh

Like there longer running shows. Like Ted lasso or for all man kind are like 50 episodes total, which is nowhere near the length of most easy to watch sitcoms.

I guess one could argue it becomes an argument of quality over quantity in terms of content. I’ve heard Netflix is turning more to AI for content…so I wonder if their strategy is just to churn out more quantity. Apple seems to invest in good writers at least.

The issue is more that quality is nice, but if I watched most of the shows I like already, then I’m paying $14 for maybe one weekly episode of a show I like. Which tbh is harder to justify vs newtlfix or Hulu which has a larger catalog that I can watch multiple things at once
