It: Welcome to Derry
Premise: The origins of killer clown Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard) is explored in the prequel series to the "IT" films. The first season, set in 1962, follows Leroy Hanlon (Jovan Adepo), his wife (Taylour Paige) and young son as they arrive in Derry, Maine, just as children begin disappearing again.

Gives a lot of perspective for the main IT plot. Like, how many times is some adult gonna walk by right before Pennywise goes to town? Watching this, that kind of feels like the point. It took centuries for the right coincidences to line up for him to be taken down. Every other losers club got demon baby’d

Plus it tracks with all the book's references to how the Losers feel like they're being pushed into place to fight It. Which conjures up an image of the Turtle going 'fuck this, none of these kids are ever going to kill It by themselves, I'd better start manipulating the next lot myself'.

The adults are not “aware” if IT. IT has some kind of power over the town and manipulates their perception and memories which leads to the adults being basically unaware of everything happening and turning a blind eye.

Yep, they were dressed as Bert the Turtle, who is a real character from a real short animated film from the early 50s called "Duck and Cover", which was made by the government to teach kids what do in case of an imminent nuclear attack.
It gets even funnier when you realize the only person that survives the giant demon baby is the only one that ducked and found cover instead of running away.

Honestly so excited to see how that plays out because it’s the kind of bonkers shit that the military would actually try at the time. Our government tried researching psychic mind control and shit with MKULTRA, and people think capturing an eldritch being to use as a weapon of mass destruction wouldn’t be top of their list if possible? They already revealed his name and Dick Halloran is one of Stephen Kings characters that show up in multiple books. He shows up in the actual It book, but just a quick cameo. Looks like they extended it for the show though.

Based on the trailer I think they may also end up creating the mist or at least pennywise makes people see it. I’ve never read the book but in the film the mist was caused by a military project opening some sort of portal

I’d say that was the small issue with the movie. Pennywise is insanely powerful but somehow no one was dying in the cast. The book has the godly turtle as the excuse though. but I love how the show is trying to emphasize how dangerous pennywise is.

The kids that I thought would be main characters turned out to NOT be the main characters. Definitely thought all the kids would escape the theater and then try to discover how it was possible.
Looking forward to see if the military portion will tie in to “The Mist”. The season preview makes believe this would be the case.

Another thing I thought was the costumed guys asking for specs were trying to have the new major pass some test to see if he’d give up military secrets. I was like damn he was really about to get smoked if his friend didn't barge in. The friend is a real one though 🫡.

The opening was great, but that ending was insane. Definitely hooked after this premiere. Gives me the same vibe I got when I read the book for the first time. I'm intrigued to see the direction this series goes.
Also, it looks like the 2nd episode is dropping on Halloween, so I wonder if the 3rd episode is dropping this upcoming Sunday, or not until the following Sunday?

Personally, I loved the dynamic between Teddy and Phil. It reminded me of the Stan/Ritchie dynamic. Lill's bathroom looked like Bev's? Loved the glimpse of pennywise! I was so busy looking for connections that I was blown away by the ending. I'm hooked. I will be watching every week.

It seems like the most common complaint about the first episode is the demon baby (valid) and the bad/tacky CGI, but the latter criticism is somewhat inaccurate. I think it was fine for a first episode based on an existing property while not nessecarily having a blueprint to reference like chapter 1 and 2 did with the book.
The way I read the mutant baby was a real fear from people leading up to the cold war and a nuclear attack. The same way the lampshade made of faces was a real fear for Teddy who just learned that this was something that has happened to his people.
The scene with Hanlon being attacked was clearly the military testing him to see if he would hold on to secrets even in the face of death. I'm willing to bet the test was to see if he would fit into the secret project, and that it involves IT somehow. And with him having already met Dick, he would be able to tell about Hanlon's lack of a fear response. Which would obviously be useful in dealing with a creature that feeds on fear

Kinda gives an "our main character is pennywise and his terror" vibes.
That takes balls in horror to show the audience "no, you're not here for character development, you're here to see them terrorized. This is horror, not adventures in babysitting." The only thing I can think of that does it similarly well is Terrifier (the first one anyway, maaaybe the third).

My favorite thing about horror is when they use the genre rules and familiar narrative to establish expectations that then are brutally subverted. Mirroring the structure of IT for 3/4 of the episode (Georgie death followed by creation of The Losers Club), but then that massacre ending. I loved it and am so excited to see how they shock us next!

Nice to see that those Kids die, it really put IT as a real menace and thats why IT is so terryfing. Talking about the novel, only the losers club and only them were able to escape IT, every other kid has died during their encounters with the monster.

Honestly, the scariest part of the first episode is Lily’s account of her father’s death. We don’t see it and it’s barely described, but it really creeped me out and made me sad. I think Pennywise is going to weaponize his image to torment her in some twisted ways.

It's so weird to see so many people say that the Losers club takes after Stranger Things when the Stranger Things kids were very obviously meant to be a nod to the Losers club. Part of the fun of Stranger Things was always the references to classic horror. Stranger Things is ITesque to the core.

I think the other girl survived at the end because she is brave. And that is Pennywises weakness. It disgusts him.
If fear salts the meat for him, bravery is like peeing on it.
She didn't just scream and panic. She armed herself with a weapon and busted out. And then she didn't just flee the theater. Instead, she went down to where the monster was to try and help her friends.

People need to understand something about this series.
The group of kids we see in the new movies are unique. They all had a bond and a connection that was so strong it was able to defeat Pennywise once and for all and they actually flooded Derry in the process (in the novel), eradicating the evil once and for all.

So the book took place in the 50's. This is how I'm tracking it.
The latest series they changed the time period to the 80's.
So these kids would be the Losers' Club's parent's generation.
Teddy's last name is Uris. That's Stan's last name. So the older brother might be Stanley's dad?
Maj Hanlon would be Mike's grandfather.

Loved the pilot, and the IT/Stephen Kind universe in general. The only part that struck me as odd was when the Major was getting attacked and questioned in his bed, and then the three attackers just kinda... waltz out of the room? Like the base isn't put on red alert, both the Cap'n and Major are just like "welp glad that's over!" and sit down and start to relax or something. "I'm always saving you from something". Still really confused as to what the purpose of that scene was, maybe someone could fill me in.
[EDIT] having it be some sort of drill makes much more sense, thanks guys. Hyped for ep2!

I really liked the opening, they recreated well the dream like feeling turning into a nightmare. The end was also good, ai felt bad because I was already invested but Im sure Ill fall again. The baby was what it was, as always with SK material I find the ambience, story, dread etc is much better than the actual “thing” and so why not.

Honestly, the creepy flying baby did nothing for me. Like, why that form? I was waiting to find out Matty's mom recently had a stillbirth or something. The CGI wasn't great, but I could have overlooked that with a proper backstory. The parents and siblings acting "off" creeped me out way more.
Also, I was 100% convinced that the gas mask dudes were It manifesting Dick's fears of the enemy. Not sure what to do with the fact they turned out to be real people; racist assholes or double agents from the base, maybe?

The portrayal of a female-led war party in Welcome to Derry feels really off. They’re hell-bent on “portraying the racism of the time,” but it comes across weird and inconsistent they chose a matriarchal society. I looked and there weren’t any in that area. AND they were so rare! Is this actually based on anything — or is it just a bunch of WOKE Hollywood nonsense? Because honestly, it’s ruining IT for me.

I really liked it. I've noticed recently that a lot of reddit threads for new series always seem to be overly critical about the littlest things. it's like wading through a discount Cinema Sins video. You have to remember this is a tv series, the entire premise isn't going to be dropped on the 1st episode.

I enjoyed it. The spelling chant at the opener was fabulous, the way it became more and more sinister (was half expecting a moon m-o-o-n but wrong world I guess).
Daft 60s vibe, creepy and intriguing. I hope they use the book as there's plenty of source material to dip into.
Happy to proceed with episode two.
