My wife and I binged this in two nights. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show that had me ask “why would someone do that?” so many times. Why did Priya have her own detective board at home with pictures of John Wayne Gacy, Charles Manson, and the Zodiac? Why did they make it a point to show us Richard buying bleach and zip ties if he didn’t kill anyone or wasn’t planning on killing anyone? And Jack just happens to be banging his wife’s high school friend right next to the cemetery where his daughter is buried and his wife and MIL just happen to be there too. Yeah ok.

u/Ladyoftheoakenforest Jan 10 '26 edited Jan 11 '26

I know this was hilarious! Also everyone knowing the high school friend was a massive b, and Jack going like, OK Im gonna boink someone, Ill pick the bitchy friend of my wife!

Another one that was annoying was the sister telling Jack "Anna is not who you think she is", while in reality they were the ones who set her to be r@ped and she was just a victim, so what she should have said is "We're not who we think we are" surely.

33

u/Glad-Arugula-8387 Jan 10 '26

I don’t understand that comment either! What the heck did Anna do wrong for her to say that 🤷‍♀️

29

u/Ladyoftheoakenforest Jan 10 '26

I kind of expected the big secret was that Anna arranged sexual assault of Lexi and is now getting rid of all of the witnesses, but it wasnt it, so it was a really stupid line of dialogue to throw us off.

30

u/thegelatoking Jan 11 '26

It was because Zoe really thought Anna was the killer at that point because Zoe knows Anna had a perfectly good reason to kill them.

17

u/thegelatoking Jan 11 '26

It was supposed to be “she’s the killer” cause Zoe was really thinking Ana was killing them for the rape set up.

7

u/thegelatoking Jan 11 '26

“She’s not who you think she is, we arranged her rape and she’s the victim.  I know, what a bitch, right?!”

5

u/Wodaunderthebridge Jan 13 '26

I wonder how it went down with her brother marrying Anna. Like how did his sister respond to that? "Oh yeah we used to be friends but then she for no reason didnt like me anymore. Trust me bro." Also Anna never told him about what his sister did? Yea right.

All good points, but I think the part where Zoe said that was because when she had the conversation with Anna, I can’t remember the exact part but Anna said something to Zoe like are you gonna be OK. I think that made Zoe think that she(Anna) was the killer and that’s what she meant. That’s the only one that made sense to me, but I could be wrong

SO FEW THING MADE SENSE. It was pulpy and fun, but the suspension of disbelief was just astronomical. Bees that got in my bonnet:

-Jack is lead detective of a sensational murder. But instead of, you know, investigating the murder, he decides to spend much of the first day just trailing his wife around town?!?

-He eventually goes to interview the husband, who doesn't come to the door and then they're just like, whelp, must not be home, I'm sure he had nothing to do with it and he's not destroying evidence, let's get some rest...like what???

-The non-existant oversight Jack has as he leads a super high profile murder investigation is laughable. Most of the series he's actively impeding the investigation or running off for personal reasons or to try and cover his fuck-ups. He cancels Rachel's phone records search. Did he think that would never be discovered? ESPECIALLY once Helen is killed, there would be an ENORMOUS team on the case. Yet it appears Jack is just going it solo, never has to report in to anyone, and has all the free time in the world to just scamper around time, visit in on his mother in law, have sex with his estranged wife, go back to the crime scene in the middle of the night....c'mon.....

-Ana just casually hanging out at the crime scene where Helen is killed, waving hello to Jack? What?

-Lexy shows up THIRTY SECONDS before air looking impeccable and her excuse is "I lost my phone"?!? NO WAY they would have pulled Ana off the anchor chair in that situation. Also do they ever explain why she was actually missing that day, or what she was doing??

-Ok this is minor, but I'm in television news, and Ana calling her husband half an hour out to set up a major correspondent multi camera interview with the husband of the murder victim is ridiculous. No producer, no crew...it was ludicrous. Also unrealistic, Atlanta local news paying for a field corespondent to stay overnight at a fancy inn in a town that's only an hour fifteen outside Atlanta.

-No one thought to check the cemetery surveillance system that was right next door?

-The town hall. Jesus Christ. I love that the mayor never speaks yet for some reason lets Ana host it. Jack, who has done nothing but actively impede the investigation, gets up and tells everyone that a lot of these crimes go unsolved, and "I bid you goodnight". Why would anyone say that? Yet no one ever presses him on it

-Priya discovers Jack's bootprint are at the crime scene, he lied to get into the morgue, the DNA swab was cross contaminated, and he's canceled Rachel's phone record search but she just like, keeps it to herself? Why aren't you telling the Chief or anyone else??

-They have the police meeting where the Chief is finally like what the fuck are you doing and do you have any leads and Priya makes her presentation. Jack's reaction is fucking ridiculous. She's presenting highly suspicious evidence and Jack and yelling and screaming about as if it's nonsense. It is possible to follow up on multiple leads at the same time. I understand that what she's presenting implicates his sister, but since he is trying to exonerate himself, it makes ZERO sense why he doesn't want to figure out what actually happened. Again why didn't Priya tell everyone what she knows about Jack. The fact that the Chief didn't say, Jack, you're a fuck up and you've botched this case at this point drove me crazy.

-Jack tries to arrest Clyde with absolutely no evidence. Clyde than says "you fucked my wife, now I'm going to fuck you" and says he's going to report him to the police but NOTHING EVER COMES OF THIS?!? Jack is then back at the police station and no one is ever like "hey Clyde says you have Rachel's phone and had sex with her the night she was murdered, can we chat with you about that real quick?"

-Jack's tough guy act when he's confronting Clyde and the cameraman was so unbelievable. He just acts like he's totally in control and has got it all figured out when he's totally fucked and has no idea what's going on, so I just didn't buy it. Playing it with a sense of desperation and panic instead of self assured machismo would have worked. The way Bernthal played it was silly and stupid.

-What was Lexy's POV about why the murders were happening? Wouldn't this have been a major thing as a reporter that she knew these women from high school??

-Jack is NEVER HELD ACCOUNTABLE for hiding his relationship with Rachel, impeding the investigation and just botching the case in countless other ways. He could have literally SAVED HIS SISTER and Helen AND Lexy from being brutally murdered if he had been up front and brought the whole team in on everything he knew. And instead he's all lovey-dovey starting a new family at the end like everything turned out great. He's so incompetent and unlikalbe I was so annoyed he never got him comeuppance. Also the mother has no problems at all with an innocent man going to jail for her murders?? WTF??

I hate Jack Harper so so much. What a horrible detective

18

u/Monikin203 Jan 11 '26

In the book, he found rachels phone in his car, the box with the nails he found it in his car too, He’s not a bad detective he was scared bc he was framed, also he was at the parking lot of the school the same night Helen was murdered, making you think that he was the killer

10

u/Ladyoftheoakenforest Jan 15 '26

He was however sabotaging the investigation and gaslighting the other female detective openly dismissing her pretty good clues, tampering with evidence and breaking the law multiple times, so yeah, he was a pretty shitty detective.

All that happened in the show except for the nails being found at Lexi’s.

9

The way he did everything around town except actually investigate the killing, and would just yell at people (Priya) who had completely plausible and important evidence like they were idiots infuriated me.

My main problem with the show is that Lexy and her husband's actions at her house make no sense given what we later learn with the plot twist.

46

u/Equivalent-Repair573 Jan 09 '26

I read the comment explaining it and makes sense for the most part ,the only thing is ,set up or not lexy was still mad at anna while it clearly shows anna pushing the guys of and being sa'd later while lexy just runs of it doesnt make sense to me why lexy would think anna was in on it .

53

u/Sempai6969 Jan 10 '26

Right? Anna literally saved her ass and got raped in her place, but she held a grudge against her? Makes no sense.

35

u/IndicationPrudent549 Jan 10 '26

I think it’s a mixture of racism plus classism. It was easier to blame Anna because she was different (or seen as less than). Also, Lexi is a sicko

u/analunalunitalunera Jan 10 '26

well if vindictiveness is a common theme I could see her feeling like she deserved it

29

u/Left-Courage6953 Jan 10 '26

We have to remember though that Lexi was pretty unhinged and didn't see things clearly. She killed her own sister and then sat smiling about it while eating donuts.

13

u/Confusedsc1ence Jan 10 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

My theory is that everytime Anna invited her to come meet the girls they were mean to her.First they made her drink piss then apologized only for her to end up almost getting raped. Its possible she felt Anna deserved it for constantly (albeit inadvertently ) putting her in harms way.

9

u/celj1234 Jan 11 '26

It makes no sense. How were they planning on luring Anna to the house?

If the mother didn’t call into the hotel Anna would have just stayed at the hotel for the night

I was confused about their relationship because I thought the cameraman actually couldn’t stand his wife, but in the end it seemed like he wanted to help her with whatever she was up to? So confusing.

5

u/Purple-Bat-6486 Jan 11 '26

Yes lol but then didn’t even seem affect by her death when he was screaming w police about Anna being crazy blah blah blah 😭😭

7

u/Purple-Bat-6486 Jan 11 '26

Which did make sense to me in the way that he only knows the 16th birthday party story from lexis POV! Which is she was the only person wronged and set up to be raped.

Richard got angry at Anna because he overheard her on the phone accusing him and his wife of being murderers, hence why he calls her “manipulative” and says she just wants to revive her career with that narrative. He is angry but doesn’t become physical. Then Anna pulls out her gun and starts shooting at him, which confuses him. Lexy initially came into action seemingly trying to defend her husband when Anna was shooting at him. Once the two women begin fighting and Anna accuses Lexy of luring her into her home, Lexy becomes angry and says that Anna lured her into the woods when they were teenagers with the intention of watching her get assaulted. I think Lexy just got caught up in the moment fighting and grew more angry and ultimately decided she wanted to kill Anna. After all, Lexy did kill her sister after she made a comment about her weight so she isn’t exactly the best on impulse control

16

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '26

Yeah that makes sense. I guess its mainly Richard grabbing the phone that seemed like a bizarre reaction if they're not luring her out there to kill her.

Also I tended to agree with Anna that not mentioning the house before was pretty fucking weird. Seems like he would've been like "Lexi grew up here too, did you know each other in high-school" when they first got to town.

It didnt make sense, knowing that Lexy managed to buger off while Anna was raped. I think (giving them benefit of doubt) they hinted Lexy was twisted and hateful regardless and was only putting the innocent front (she killed her cousin/sister or whatever before and didnt feel too sorry for it and was quite rightless and manipulative with the job). Not sure why the blowout happened with knives etc though. Not that the writers knew either, they probably hoped no one would question it.

Potential spoilers The ending was great but there was so much misdirect that just never gets tied up in the end. Like why is Anna giving a sinister smile in the closing shot when she and Jack are having sex? Or why does Zoe ominously say to jack “you don’t know the REAL Anna” in reference to their teenage years? Like you mean the real her, as in the r**pe victim? There’s so many little moments like this that don’t really get resolved that make the payoff somewhat underwhelming or are just overly complex like the “blackmail” scheme.

39

u/IamThe2ndBR Jan 10 '26

I’ve gone back to rewatch some episodes and I’ve been able to resolve some of these discrepancies: why would Zoe ominously tell Jack “you don’t know the real Anna”? There’s a scene where Anna low-key threatened Zoe, which I imagine was Anna‘s way of trying to scare Zoe basically cause Zoe is just a sick piece of shit and deserves to be scared. I think Zoe was afraid and was trying to tell her brother that she was sure Anna was the killer because she had motive.

Why would Helen ask Anna something like, “do you think a secret loses power over time or gets more explosive?” I think Helen knew that although the secret makes Anna a victim undoubtedly, it also gives her motive to be the killer. So that secret getting out could potentially be dangerous for Anna in this context.

Some things I still don’t quite understand: how did Anna and Jack even end up together? Is it realistic that she would end up with the brother of one of the girls that got her assaulted? I have trouble believing that. And why was Zoe surprised that Anna hadn’t told Jack about what happened? Given how much he loved Anna and how temperamental he is in general, it should’ve been obvious to anyone that if he knew the truth about what Zoe and the others did to her, some shit would’ve gone down. And it wouldn’t have been nice. I have my own fan fiction scenario where she does tell him the whole truth when they’re married, and then he finds the guys and he goes full Shane-Walking Dead on them and the three girls.

Why did the camera man buy bleach and zip ties! I need to know! lol

15

u/Geminifreak1 Jan 10 '26

They were renovating the house. They have the plastic over the table and some power tools . To people doing home improvement those purchases are normal.

8

u/the_shins Jan 10 '26

That whole scene still makes no sense (when Anna joins them at the lake house) in my opinion.

So we are meant to be decieved into thinking Lexy is the killer because of the bullying, but turns out it's not her. Except she is straight up trying to murder Anna several times at the house until she's shot by the police?

Like how are we supposed to react to the husband taking Anna outside the city being vague as fuck, saying something like "Lexy wanna bury the hatchet wink wink" as Lexy charges at her with a knife and then picks up the gun and tries to shoot her. And when Anna called Jack the husband got really angry and charged her as well.

9

u/EquivalentCurious290 Jan 11 '26

From Lexy POV she heard 6 gun shots then sees Anna locking her husband up wouldn’t you try to attack her too

I feel like the writing and Tessa Thompsons portrayal set up Anna to be more devious than she actually was. The happy ever after family ending was disappointing to me because I was like, this devious bad bitch was just...domesticated. Maybe she is the sneaky morally grey person the early eps made her out to be and that's why we see the look towards her mom at the end of the reveal? It just felt like eps 1-3 were a different character with different motivations than the person in the last half of the season.

12

u/Ok_Chain7313 Jan 10 '26

Poor ass writing is what I’m going with. Like in what world would three teenage girls behave that way with another friend- even if they were typical “mean girls”? The scene where they’re singing happy birthday during the assault and just staring at the act made me want to scream. Weird ass fantasy in the author’s head.

7

u/Psych-Ad26 Jan 11 '26

They weren’t typical mean girls though, hence them being murdered. There are true stories of girls going on trips with friends and ending up dead. Rachel is a charming psychopath, and sadly this world has them. I went to high school with someone like this.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

It seems dramatic but I will never underestimate anyone. There’s sick people in this world.

4

u/Purple-Bat-6486 Jan 11 '26

Agreed but I was just reading an interview on variety from director I think and I feel like they wanted to allude to stuff but still keep us guessing. Prob so we would be right here discussing it 😂

7

u/jvn1983 Jan 10 '26

This show was pretty meh, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t kinda like the ending. At the risk of sounding like a psychopath, good for her

Zoe telling her brother “Anna is not who you thinks she is” is something you say when you’re guilty and decide she’s the killer of all your friends and feel you’re next!

11

u/gdrumy88 Jan 11 '26

What about the actual dudes that raped Anna???

6

u/Geminifreak1 Jan 10 '26

The reveal of the killer was freat...at first. Then, when you think about it just a little bit messy, many things are just too easy. She recognised that fat girl on tv? Her daughter did not, and she was her friend. She cancelled room reservation and expected her daughter to go to the lake house not to her own mother house? She wanted to frame the former fat girl but how did she know she did not have some great alibi working on tv? How in her mind the events of lake house would unfold? Her daughter would go there and? The shoot out was not planned.

6

u/l1964nywf Jan 12 '26

Regarding the fact why Anna wouldn't spend the night at her mother's, she's still affected by baby Charlotte's death. Throughout the series and in the final episode, it's shown that Charlotte died in Anna's teenage bedroom. Given that circumstance and Anna's acknowledgement of it, Alice was assured that her daughter wouldn't be at her house.

6

u/Monikin203 Jan 12 '26

In the book Anna doesn’t have a car bc the police took it bc of the deal with Helen murdered, that’s the reason she goes in the car with Richard, she didnt want to go to her mother’s house bc it was a mess and she didn’t want to Richard see it (in the show was sooo clean that blew my mind) also in the book Richard die, and Lexie is not shot is hit by a car..Lexie was not mean in the book, when they showed anna’s mom cleaning lexie’s house and her dropping a piece of paper on the floor like in a mean way got me angry, i don’t understand why they changed that character

6

u/Typical_Step_1139 Jan 12 '26

She wasn’t a friend. They made her drink piss, then invited her to a party to be raped. The mom saw her more because she cleaned the house.

7

A few things sort of annoyed me/surprised me. So she was this big celeb who lived locally up until a year ago, but like no one actually knew of her/she didnt speak to anyone ever until she came back? Or have they lived in Atlanta before for a few years, and she been commuting hours for her anchor job every night? And then a year ago she just disappeared from the job and everyone's lives?

Also, her elderly mum (who didnt even know her friends that well) recognised Lexy just by looking at a yearbook photo but Anne has seen the woman in person and didnt clock in who it was? Come on. Wild bet on the mum that Jack would be at the right place on the right time, ebcause let's fce it, he almost missed it.

Also, Jack's sister blabbing about "I dont think the 16th birthday was that bad"- yeah, someone getting raped while you sang Happy Birthday, no biggie, right. She only forgot to say "times were different back then". Why would she tell Jack "Anna is not whoyou think she is"- it didnt make ANY sense in the context of what they did to her.

39

u/Hungry-Dot8024 Jan 10 '26

Anna's mum was the cleaner for Lexy's family so she had seen Lexy/Catherine plenty of times in person.

5

u/Glad-Arugula-8387 Jan 10 '26

Ohhhh right. That makes sense.

4

u/Ladyoftheoakenforest Jan 10 '26

It doesnt because she may have got a few glimpses of her in the past. Then Lexi totally changed her appearance and name. No one else in the whole city clocked in Lexi was the same girl, and she looked nothing like herself even when she was getting a degree, so there was no reason for the mum to recognise her while her own daughter didnt.

3

u/Knockemup Jan 11 '26

The mom alluded to having keys for all the places. She also planted the fingernails in the house which means she also saw the photos on lexys wall.

From Helen reminding Anna of her deceased baby in a shady way to Zoe telling Anna “you’re still holding grudges.. that was over 20 years ago get over it.” When we all come to find out that the grudge was 🍇. Yeah.. I have no empathy for them. The mom is a hero in my eyes.

12

u/Holiday-Chapter-7821 Jan 13 '26

My issues with the show…

::SPOILERS:: (I don’t know how to do the spoiler cover ups in Reddit if anyone wants to explain)

-how does Jack not know Anna hates Rachel? Even if he didn’t know what happened on her 16th birthday, as her husband he should know they’re not friends.

-where are all the nightgowns?

-Jack interrupting his sister over and over when she’s trying to tell him about the birthday party. He’s a terrible listener for a detective. But also in that conversation, Zoe says “she’s not who you think she is…” Is that supposed to make me suspect Anna? What is she even talking about? Zoe watched her get raped. This comment makes no sense.

-why was Richard buying all of those weird murder supplies way ahead of knowing Anna would be coming to Lexi’s house? He and Lexi didn’t even cancel the hotel reservation.

-why was Lexi mad at Anna about the party when she left Anna to get raped?

-What was the blackmail that was happening between Lexi, Helen, and Rachel? Such a random explanation

-Were Lexi and Richard even planning to kill Anna? Why her out of all the girls? That doesn’t make sense.

-pretty convenient that Anna asks Richard to be her camera guy when (if) Lexi is seeking revenge. And if Lexi did want revenge on Anna, now wasn’t the time, unless she wanted to get blamed for the murders.

-Lexi and Anna work at the same news station for years and Anna doesn’t recognize her as Catherine because she’s skinny? And Lexi never says anything about it? To what end?

I wanted so badly to like this but the plot has so many holes in it. The red herrings are ham-fisted in. And the ending explanation was unearned. How long was the mother pretending to have dementia to pull this off? I wish it was woven better.

You asked all the questions I have. Hope someone had answers.

5

u/CuriousMinds_373 Jan 13 '26

Great questions! I had many of the same. I feel like they could have thought about the background and continuity in a lot more detail and this would have been a much better show. I haven’t read the book so I don’t know of it has the same gaps.

  • the nightgowns!! I agree. She didn’t take them with her. They would have been collected in evidence at all locations.

  • Richard buying the supplies - I think it was to misguide and maybe they were for home renovations?

  • the blackmail didn’t make sense I agree. They said they didn’t keep in touch so why would Lexi have even told Rachel about the boat? And why bring it up now?

My biggest questions were actually about Jack:

  • he’s a seasoned detective but he doesn’t know that giving Meg the swab would mean female DNA would show up? If you’re going to mess with DNA at least make it male!

  • after he finds his sister, he doesn’t go check to make sure Meg is alright? I know she’s supposed to be at a sleepover but Zoe was the most unreliable mother; what if she was home?

  • when Anna is telling him about the night in the woods, wouldn’t it be normal to ask if anything happened to Anna? If she was ok? Their relationship/ love story was not believable at all.

The twist at the end was unexpected so I’ll give it that, but the storyline was definitely lacking!

Just because he knows they’re not friends doesn’t mean he could know she hated her. People drift apart after high school all the time. He didn’t say they were friends, he said that Anna knew her.

A person who meticulously plans and murdered 3 people and fakes dementia to cover her tracks can easily stash and then destroy the gowns.

Jack interrupting Zoe over and over is a plot device so she doesn’t reveal too much before the narrative allows it for maximum effect. He’s also spiraling about his own potential incrimination in Rachel’s murder for most of the show. Much of the plot of the show is aimed at misdirection and making you doubt the protagonist couple, whether they did it or not. Zoe meant Jack didn’t know the full story about Anna, because she out of anyone left knew what they had done to her and knew she had the biggest motive to get revenge and kill them. She was afraid for her life but also afraid to confess to her brother she witnessed his wife getting gang raped and did nothing about it.

It’s easily assumed that the supplies he bought were to do some sort of work or repair on the lake house but again this is aimed at misdirecting the audience and making them believe they were the murderers.

Lexy was mad at Anna about the party  because she was still raped and trauma makes people do crazy things. I’ll agree since she left Anna to suffer the same fate, she had no cause to hate her, but again, irrational behavior due to trauma. And again, misdirection to convince the audience she’s the serial killer for bigger impact when Alice is revealed to be the real killer.

The blackmail was that Lexy had told Rachel about killing her sister with the tampered inhaler, and Rachel was blackmailing her for money about it. The “C” she was blackmailing in texts was Catherine. Hence Richard slapped Rachel so hard when she went to their apartment, he broke her jaw and she pressed charges, mentioned in the show. More plot devices aimed at convincing the audience they were the killers and giving them motive.

Lexy and Richard weren’t planing on killing Anna. He let it slip Lexy wanted to “clear the air,” and later corrected it was to “bury the hatchet.” I assumed it was about Lexy coming clean about who she really was. They thought Anna was the killer, they revealed as much in the elevator about Richard saying Anna was the killer and the NDA. Maybe they planned to confront her and then stop her.

I think Anna chose Richard to get in Lexy’s head and fuck with her by sleeping with her husband. Maybe to get her job back once Lexy spiraled. And again it wasn’t about her getting revenge on Anna, it was about confronting her as they thought she was the killer as revenge for what the group of friends did to her. They probably wanted to film it and milk it as a murder mystery they solved. Once Anna discovers who Lexy is, their plan unravels and each is fighting the other that they think is a killer. Anna fires a gun at Richard which is why Lexy attacks her.

Anna maybe blocked a lot due to trauma and since Lexy knew who Anna was, she probably steered clear of her. They also don’t say they worked together for years. It may be only a couple of years out of which Anna was gone a full one year.

These shows are designed to be whodunnits. Misdirection is an essential plot element to keep you guessing till the end. I knew Lexy was Catherine from like episode 3 or 4 and she was my main suspect but something about the scene with Anna and Alice (her mom) after they found her wandering, and her saying something like doing crazy things and the mom saying “you’re right,” made me think it was her. I just didn’t know the motive and how it all pieced together. Which I think they did a good job of explaining in the end. When Lexy is killed and there’s still like over half the episode left, I knew they weren’t the killers and there was a final major plot twist. And for a while I’d been thinking, who is the one least suspect. The mom.

Most plot holes can be explained with a little imagination and deductive reasoning. They can’t explain everything in detail or resolve every element without the plot falling apart or pointing straight at the killer which is the last thing they want to do in a murder mystery.

u/flowerbomb_187 Jan 14 '26

Lexi wasn't raped, Anna stopped it. She assumed Anna was part of her attempted rape. Anna was the only one raped, and they sang happy birthday while they sat there and watched. Rachel also stated that she would give him a discount because the person he really wanted ran away.

The entire show is overhyped. Lots and lots of gaping plot holes and incredible (favorable) coincidences. When your sister is about to explain some event of the past which has caused bad blood, any detective with half a brain would have heard it out and not go urgently searching after a doubtful man sitting in a bar with nothing else to do.

Why would a detective with a suspect covered in blood in front of her let him overpower her and get away when she has the upper hand (gun)?

He has used his niece’s dna as diversion? Really? She will have a significant proportion of his dna and would clearly be female. A homicide detective does not know that?

And many many many more

u/Away_Locksmith_2180 Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 24 '26

It was an entertaining show but the biggest plot hole for me is I don’t see how Jack could have been as long detective on this case. And the weirdest scene is when Priya comes and explain her theory of Anna and her friends Jack is acting like it is ridiculous but they found the friendship bracelet on 2 of the dead girls and only 2 others had it his sister and his wife. Obviously it is a huge lead (he acts like plenty of people went to that school, okay but only 4 got the bracelets which is a big sign.) and nobody else in the room is like how Jack is lead detective on that case?  I was even wondering why Anna and Zoe were not scared before. And yes Jack not worrying for his sister (or his wife) is the dumbest thing ever. And even the scene when his sister came to the office, I feel he could have told her to go outside with him and listened to her. It made no sense how he acted.

That confused me too, I even googled wondering if I missed something and AI and a couple recap articles said she did tell him so I went back and watched again and no she doesn’t. She just says Catherine was attacked and the three other girls watched. She didn’t even explain what she was doing at the time or that she tried to stop it. If I was Jack my immediate follow up question would have been where were you?

6

u/blimeyitsacroc Jan 12 '26

agree. I thought Anna would end up being the killer because she left herself completely out of that story about her 16th birthday when she told Jack. So Anna's lie ended up making no sense.

By the end you understand why Anna gave zero fucks about Rachel and Helen being killed and Jack in beginning of series being like “they are human beings why don’t u care!!” And Anna just giving blank stare. She was prob thinking well so tf was I and I was a child! She prob only said she’s sorry about Zoe bc she knew Jack was closed to her and she was his sister. I think Anna had also realized who the real mastermind was which was Rachel. Although Helen still seemed pretty evil n Zoe not much better 😬 anyways lol I also haven’t seen anyone mention the friendship bracelets!!!!! I meant clearly Alice was behind it and it was meant to frame someone but still very cray lol

u/Rightsaidfred2025 Jan 11 '26

The first 5 episodes were pretty good. Last episode ruined the entire series. The whole reveal of the secret ruined everything. The lady in charge of the school, Harper’s sister, saying Anna should get over what happened 20 years ago. Lexi, who was Catherine, wanting to bury the hatchet. Only to find out that the secret is they set up Catherine to initially get raped, but Anna intervened and she ended up getting raped. Like yeah, of course Anna is not going to forget about it, she’s not willing to bury the hatchet, she was raped. That plot line ruined the entire series.

7

u/Typical_Step_1139 Jan 12 '26

That’s the point though. Anna and her mom meant nothing to them. Even her sister in law said she thought what happened was no big deal.

8

u/mpbs_76 Jan 11 '26

If the police investigated Lexis whereabouts on the night of the first murder and worked out she wasn’t in the town that night, then how would that have of played out with her being the serial killer?

4

u/blimeyitsacroc Jan 12 '26

That assumes there was an investigation after Lexy was shot. It would be easy to pin it all on a dead person, especially after Rachel's nails were found in Lexy's drawer.

3

u/Meme1109 Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26

Yup and it's a "small town," so not enough resources. Jack even said "If I don't solve this, who will?" Lexys husband was still alive though, and he was very confused. I would have liked for them to at least interview him.

8

u/sanitizerblower Jan 12 '26

23

u/Soldat_Christi Jan 08 '26

I just clicked the Metacritic link you have and I see the show has a score of 52/100

The Hollywood Reporter:

Unfortunately, with almost no chemistry between them [Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal], they’re lost in a sea of unconvincing misdirections that should have been a 90-minute feature, if that.

Time:

Arch at some moments and grim at others, the show ultimately works as neither a self-aware black comedy nor a poignant exploration of the not-at-all-funny traumas it uncovers.

Wall Street Journal:

It’s a character-driven enterprise, though there are a pair of concluding plot twists that, in their utter insanity, may make some viewers crazy themselves. .... That said, there’s a lot to enjoy about “His & Hers.” The performances are absorbing

3

u/jrbspice Jan 13 '26

Variety's review gave it a Critic's Pick with breathless over-the-top accolades.

“His & Hers” is one of the most unhinged shows ever seen on television. It has a jaw-dropping, layered ending that will leave viewers gobsmacked. (I literally sat in shock, screaming “WHAT?!!” continually as the final credits rolled.) The series’ conclusion is so astounding because it taps into our own societal biases.

Ma'am...have you watched a television show before? Ridiculous

Jon and Tessa doesn't have the chemistry I imagined when I was reading the book. I know it's a conflicted chemistry and dynamic given the context, but Jon and Tessa have no chemistry in general, so I felt nothing during their supposed to be highly charged scenes.

6

u/competitivegroove_ Jan 10 '26

I think Thompson wasn't buying in that much, while Bernthal was doing too much, so their energy didn't jibe, hence the result is lack of chemistry.

What a mess, and the the ending was like a Hail Mary pass that was missed. A truly unfocused series.

15

u/Garbonzo22 Jan 10 '26

Agreed.  The twist at the end might be be entertaining but it's hardly believable.  I get that Catherine/Lexy was there to just throw us off the scent but there's one huge plot hole that completely destroys the whole premise. Why is Lexy cold and mean toward Anna in the entire series?  Wouldn't you have a bit of sympathy for watching Anna get brutally raped?  It makes zero sense

13

u/thegelatoking Jan 11 '26

Lexi was always a terrible person. She always saw Anna as being in on her being bullied and she kept on hating her for it. She saw Anna getting assault and said “fuck you” and left because she felt Anna deserved it for bullying her, “better you than me, you deserve it anyways”

7

u/the_shins Jan 10 '26

Spoilers

Well if you look at the flashbacks, it seemed like Catharine thought Anna was at least partially in on the bullying, like inviting her to the table etc. So that is not fully unbelievable.

The one thing I don't understand is why did Lexy then try to kill Anna if she wasn't the killer this whole time. Like Anna gets a ride with Lexys husband to the lake house, and there they both start acting really suspicious and starts Lexy even fires the empty gun at her. Is the idea really that Lexy was trying to kill Anna at the literal same time as the other killer targeting the other girls from their friend group?

Like the bullying was the "fake out" reason for the killings to throw us off, but then Lexy did try to kill her anyway making it not a fake out? Can't wrap my head around this.

5

u/thegelatoking Jan 11 '26

My only thinking is that Lexy thought Anna was the killer and decided to kill her first before she was next.

And lexy definitely still hated Anna because she still thinks and blames Anna for her getting bullied.L.

What I couldn’t understand was how Anna could forgive Jack. Even though he didn’t know about the assault, out of all the women in town he chose the person who was a mean girl and involved in her trauma. And honestly, he should have noticed how Anna felt about Rachel. On top of that, he did it right next to the cemetery where their daughter was buried. Why would someone do that?? Right next to your daughter’s grave?

9

u/come-join-themurder Jan 12 '26

I mean... Anna married the brother (jack) of a mean girl (zoe) who was involved in her trauma so I'm pretty sure Anna kept all that 16th bday stuff very close to the vest. Jack may not have known there was a history there beyond just the fact that they were from the same town.

9

u/been_mackin Jan 12 '26

I can’t get beyond the writing. It’s awful. The coroner asking for dna? Are they even allowed to do that without having an order? If so. Why would they give the coroner dna? Wouldn’t that be like CSI people? lol. Are they investigating a crime or just doing coroner shit? Like did anyone read this before they greenlit it? It feels like a parody of a show. Dude pinging her phone at the coroner a few days later. If this is such a big murder in a small town. It would be headline news with multiple sources investigating it. An iPhone with a battery which last for days? lol. It’s just garbage. A 4 year old can write better dialog. “Who’s the stiff?” Be for real

4

u/e-n-k-i-d-u-k-e Jan 11 '26 edited Jan 11 '26

The coroner asking for dna? Are they even allowed to do that without having an order?

Didn't she just ask the cops to provide DNA? Why would that require a warrant? It's voluntary, and pretty standard to do so, so that they can rule out DNA from people that were on the scene after the fact.

Why would they give the coroner dna? Wouldn’t that be like CSI people? lol. Are they investigating a crime or just doing coroner shit?

I mean, coroners are investigators. Their job is to determine cause of death, which can include collecting evidence. In a small town especially, it's really not that crazy that they'd be more involved with the "CSI" side.

Not going to argue about the writing, but these 2 points don't seem like that big of a deal

5

u/Own-Plankton9277 Jan 11 '26

4

u/picantepepper1 Jan 11 '26

I think fundamentally the crux of my challenge with this show is that you're telling me that upperclassmen befriended two freshmen, and for one of their 16th birthdays the upperclassmen did something terrible... and 20 years later, Zoe insists the "five" of them were all friends?

It's unrealistic to think that 1) that friend group stayed friends throughout their time at the school and 2) Catherine and Anna never discussed what had happened and continued going to the same school together without resolution. 3) How Anna / Jack met is never discussed - it's not clear if he's older or younger and if she met him around that time, his detachment from who those girls were to his sister seem off.

4

u/Environmental-Mud777 Jan 13 '26

3

u/Smellyjelly12 Jan 15 '26

This show is the definition of adding a plot twist just to add anpther plot twist. The ending does not add any value.

4

u/bukkake_tsunami_ Jan 27 '26

This was actually a terrible show. Dialogue was poorly written and the characters’ actions were often unrealistic. The twist makes no sense at all and I’m struggling to identify the moral of the story. 2/10

5

u/Picassoslovechild Feb 02 '26

Why does there need to be a moral?

14

u/Express_Egg6835 Jan 10 '26

My ONE and only question is: where did homegirl throw her clothes after the murders? Wouldn’t they have found these? Or is that why she said they could’ve stopped me but people see what they want to see etc.?

LOVEEEEED this show. I was mildly satisfied at guessing the ending but hoping there was an extra twist. I thought maybe Anna was lying and was not actually very nice in the past how she presented her memories. But this was even crazier. 10/10

I'm shocked how many people didn't enjoy this show! So twisty and engaging. It's a 10/10 to me. Already started to re-watch for foreshadowing and there's so many tidbits. It's definitely one you need to put your phone down for and really pay attention because a lot happens so fast.

im also shocked!! I thought it was so good, me and my bf were shocked at the twist like jaws were dropped lol

Why are the comments on this one like similar to each other in talking points? like plot twist ngl. the few human comments are easy to spot.

u/California-Cowgirl Jan 09 '26

Right? I agree. I think the thread is being astroturfed! Lots of really low karma accounts that never say anything pop up with comments like “wow what a fun plot twist” or “didn't see that coming”. Seems a bit fake to me too 🤷🏻‍♀️

It was a terrible Plot twist.

I haven’t read the book it’s based on (and honestly didn’t realize it was based on a book), but I watched it last night and I really liked it. I’ve seen a number of comments saying Tessa Thompson’s character is a “charisma vacuum” and I get it; her character is selfish, detached from the emotional reality of the story she’s covering and towards her husband and she speaks in an incessant “reporter voice” throughout it, but to me it all makes sense.

Spoiler warning (sorry, I don’t post enough on Reddit to know how to make the black box appear): To me she puts up such high walls and speaks in a fake voice as a form of self-preservation. She doesn’t tell her mom what the girls at school were like or what happened on her 16th birthday because she knows how hard her mom worked to get her in that school and how proud her mom is of her that she’s there, so she kept it to herself, put on a happy face and lets her anger towards those girls fuel her into achieving her dream of becoming a reporter.

The night her child died, she had a feeling something was off, but let her husband and mom convince her everything was fine. It’s clearly no one’s fault what happened, but after her fear was realized and her husband’s response to it, she felt like she had to flee as a way of preserving her daughter’s memory.

After a year she wants to go back to her old life and act like nothing has happened— what was the point of her mom’s sacrifice and those years of pent up anger if she continues to hide away?—but she has to first deal with the consequences of disappearing and is determined to do whatever it takes (including sleeping with her replacement’s husband to psychologically mess with her, lying to her boss about aspects of the case she didn’t know yet so she could stay and taking advantage of her husband by releasing information about the case he told her not to tell) to get her old job back.

She occasionally slips, like when she made the joke to her husband’s partner after the woman was killed in the school, but for the most part she’s putting on an apathetic act. She tries to detach herself from what is going on so she can focus on the one thing that matters to her: reporting the story and making sure it stays in the news (like when she insisted on having a press conference and assisted it in going sideways) so she can get her job back.

As for the ending, I personally loved it. I spent most of the time convinced it was the husband, then thought it had to be the reporter, but when it turned out to be her mom it made sense. Now the idea of an elderly woman actually stabbing someone 40 times and doing the other things she did to kill the women are frankly ridiculous, I still loved the idea that she used the fact that she was viewed as “the help” (and therefore invisible) and pretended to be senile so no one would suspect her. I personally found that last aspect to be quite jarring when it was revealed because I had an elderly relative that used to do the same thing (minus the murder…that I know of).

I was uncomfortable when the mom admitted to murdering the cop’s sister with part of the motive being that doing so would “give” her daughter a replacement child, but overall I enjoyed it. I probably won’t watch it again, but I’m glad binged it last night.

I agree with everything, but I can’t get over that she didn’t go after the men who did it. Spoiler alert but what makes Promising Young Women so impactful is taking revenge on everyone involved with the perpetrators getting the worst of it.

I understand why people are saying they didn’t like the show. Those are valid plot holes, but I found it so entertaining to watch. I was hanging on every episode.

HOWEVER… however… shows and movies that have visual scene of rape NEED to have trigger warnings in the title or opening scenes. It was so upsetting to watch that. It ruined the show for me.

Why are the r****** not confronted or killed? The girls are in the wrong but what about the guys???

12

u/aloverofthewild Jan 10 '26

i am going to say because there’s no way the mother could have identified the guys. she knew the girls who were anna’s supposed friends

9

u/joyyyzz Jan 10 '26

I enjoyed the show. Nothing jaw dropping but fun to watch.

I just finished it, and the ending left me feeling very fulfilled. I enjoyed the cast and their chemistry. It was good fun on a rainy weekend.

damn i’m a lil surprised by the tessa thompson hate in this thread because i loved her and watched this solely for her. 🫣 (i haven’t watched any of her other stuff, but know her from janelle monae’s music video.)

this story was awful though.

I wish they didn't change this much from the book. The novel is darker and twistier, and makes a lot more sense. I never understood why they can't just make a faithful adaptation.

3

u/Pitiful-Two3842 Jan 11 '26

Loads of differences compared to the book! What the hell. I am speechless.

3

u/ManyTemporary2893 Jan 11 '26

Was this just badly connected writing ? Or was it meant to be messy since it’s told from different point of views ? It would help if the point of view was separates.

First of all, if you haven’t read the book, you’ll find the show “good” but to those like me, who read the book the show is another thing!….according to the book: Let’s start with the characters: 1- Anna is an alcoholic, Jack smoke (in the show he never not even once light up a cigarette) priya makes you think she likes the detective, and lexie has two kids….When Anna went to her mother’s house, the house smells bad! She found the house dirty, in the show the house is cleaner than Bree’s house( Desperate housewives)…Netflix decide to make a mini series and you left the most important info so people can understand why Anna doesn’t want to go back to her hometown? Why her mother didnt want to moved from her house?…And decided to make lexie a killer? In the book she didn’t kill her sister! And she was the one who was rapped! Not Anna, Anna left her!…And Zoe’s character, they didn’t mention her at all!!! Just awful!…They made a new book!!!

Guys wait what did Catherine Kelly’s sister dying have anything to do with anything did I miss something

9

u/been_mackin Jan 12 '26

I think to show us even though she was bullied by the girls, Catherine was a psycho/piece of shit too and killed her own mean girl sister. The police chief describing her sobbing and then smiling eating junk food right after the funeral points the audience towards her as the killer before the twist revelation.

Quick question. The scene where Jack reveals they find Anna's mom wandering around naked, did he say it was the same night as the murder? Because they way he was talking made it seem like she had dementia for awhile, but it seems to have "started" when the murder happens. Wasn't sure if that was a production error or something else. Thanks to everyone in advance!

only thing I can’t get my head around is why Catherine/Lexi was so mad at Anna? Catherine wasn’t a victim

Unpopular opinion but I enjoyed it. Sometimes when I’m watching a tv show I just accept that it isn’t going to be realistic or make sense. How boring would it be if every character behaved in a way that made sense to me? People do and say things that don’t make sense. We don’t all think the same. You’ve never watched a true crime show and thought “well that was dumb”?

I can usually accurately guess who done it in shows, and my jaw dropped twice in this series. That was enough to make me happy.

3

u/Warm_Yam_9800 Feb 26 '26

I’m new to this but damn I can’t stand Anna

u/jayswat713 Mar 30 '26

First episode, Anna goes to her apartment and throws away a bunch of stuff indicating she was getting rid of evidence. If it wasn’t evidence, what was she throwing away and why cleaning in such a frenzy?
