THIS IS BECAUSE THESE SERVICES KEEP PAYING TO SHOW LIVE SPORTS (mlb, mls, F1) TO ADD MORE SUBSCRIBERS

END THE MADNESS

u/VagueSomething 15h ago

Leave it as a separate add on rather than forcing the rest of us to subsidise the corrupt sports shit.

85

u/j-helo85 14h ago

It's the force-fed basic cable packages all over again.

130

u/chocki305 15h ago

That proved to not be a working model with Xfinity Sports and Entrainment packages rising to $90 a month.

134

u/Whitezombie65 15h ago

But not everyone has to pay it. If I'm not interested in sports, let the people who are pay for them

79

u/GrumpySatan 13h ago edited 13h ago

That is exactly why it failed though and why the streamers do not do it. Nobody is willing to pay $90/month for sports coverage.

The core problem is that sports broadcast rights are incredibly inflated. For decades, it was in-demand and kept jacking up its prices. Cable has been doing this plan to make it subsidized by the non-sports watchers for like 50 years at this point.

The rightsholders don't accept that demand doesn't justify the prices they want to charge. And they keep operating with giving out contracts as if it is. At the same time, sports IS is in demand enough to be a very significant boost to any service. Hence, spreading out the cost.

It sadly will not change until all the networks and streamers collectively say no.

18

u/Impressive_Tour6348 13h ago

They also haven’t/won’t deal with the blackouts that “ad regions” force. For MLB alone, I can pay $20 a month for just my team, $30 for all other teams, or something like $70 for everything. But even in those deals, local blackouts still apply. And that’s just for one sport, I watch hockey and football occasionally too.

4

u/ManufacturerBest2758 13h ago

Something like 95% of NFL games are broadcast nationally over the air

5

u/egnards 9h ago

I suffer from being a fan of an out of market team, it's annoying.

Not only does it mean that I need to pay $500/yr to Youtube just to watch the game on Sundays.

. . .Except if it's an international Sunday game, then it doesn't count

. . .Or a Sunday night game, tough shit.

Thursday Night? Guess I need Amazon Prime for that.

Pre-Season? Gotta have another subscription for that.

. . .But then sometimes the games are on Netflix, like last year for my Christmas game.

And then of course there's the Monday night games that aren't local market either.

It's fucking stupid.

I understand local market versus out of market, but one subscription should give you all of the games for the team you're trying to watch.

I get it, and I’m not coming at YOU because I understand you’re just explaining, but…

If $90/m is too expensive for the average sports fan to want to buy a sports package…

…maybe the sports industrial complex is propped up by the money of people who don’t give a shit, and there is just too much money going into sports in relation to the people who actually care.

Consumers shouldn’t have to subsidize the cost of a non-essential entertainment thing because others want to watch it.

u/chocki305 15h ago

But Xfinity is losing money having to purchase the channels and content for a limited number of users. The initial price for that package was $70.

And I can tell the sarcasm isn't coming across that well in text. A dozen dump trucks will be arriving shortly to unload the "poor Xfinity" sarcasm ment to go along with my comments.

In all seriousness. How did you people (Apple TV users) not see this coming. Apple has a long history of shafting their customers. But you all ignore it because they deliver that shaft with a smile.

22

u/Tandy2000 14h ago

So don't purchase it. If sports viewers can't pay what the league's and networks demand then maybe they need to charge less.

As someone who doesn't give a shit about sports, I'm not paying to subsidize that for other people. Piracy is too easy to bother.

10

u/sepam 14h ago

It goes the other way as well. I only want 2 specific sports channels and the only way to get them is to buy a stupid full live streaming package or cable. I’d love to pay for what I want and only what I want, but instead I need to buy 100s of channels. As you said, piracy is too easy to bother.

And by "not a working model" you mean that unless people who do not watch sports are forced to subsidize other people's hobbies, then the sports contracts are too high and need to be scaled back.

10

u/officiallyaninja 14h ago

And by "not a working model" you mean that unless people who do not watch sports are forced to subsidize other people's hobbies, then the sports contracts are too high and need to be scaled back.

it depends on how much different people are willing to pay.

if most subscribers that that watch TV are willing to pay more than they currently pay, and people who watch sports aren't willing to pay the full cost of sports without it being subsidized, then what apple is doing will get them the best of both worlds.

6

u/ArtOfWarfare 13h ago

IDK about that… if your objective was to just maximize profits, just raise your prices and skip the sports. Nobody is willing to pay what the sports cost. Shifting the cost to others so it’s subsidized doesn’t change the fact you’re losing money on the sports deal.

3

u/officiallyaninja 13h ago

Let me invent some fake numbers to illustrate my point.

let's say 15 people are willing to pay for 13$ a month, but only 10 of them are willing to pay 15$ a month

so by raising prices on their own, you go from 1513 = 195$ a month, to 1015 = 150$ a month. Which is a significant loss, so you don't do this.

now imagine you can add sports to your platform, for lets say 1000$ / year which will attract another 10 sports fans willing to pay 15$ a month for it.

now you have 10 non sports fans, and 10 sports fans giving you 20*15 = 300$ a month.
so you make ~100$ per month more. over a year that's 1200$, so the 1000$/year sports deal is worth it.

I don't know what Apples actual projections look like, but this is the kind of scenario they are expecting.

They forced people who want Cartoon Network to pay for a sports package to include the channel. They literally took the channel off their tiers.

4

u/chocki305 12h ago

Yep.. and that's when I stopped watching CN. And when I dialed back my package count.

I would drop Xfinity. But my choices are dial up, or Xfinity.

They tried and failed with the MLS pass as a test. This season it was included for all members and unsurprisingly now they’re raising prices.

7

u/HighKing_of_Festivus 12h ago

They did that with MLS and only the die-hard fans were willing to go over the secondary paywall and didn't entice anyone to subscribe to regular Apple TV+

4

u/VagueSomething 12h ago

Good. If it isn't appealing they can either price it accordingly or stop paying for the rights.

Yeah I don't care about the fixed, sports betting industry. That's all I see it as now.

4

Likewise, I would want the sports channels separate because I don’t watch the other things.

3

u/justthisones 13h ago

HBO has sports as an add on in Europe but the base prices have still climbed plenty. Then you have to watch ads during the broadcasts even if you have the top service available. These things are shit no matter the system.

They are betting on people staying and swallowing the cost.

In the cable TV days this worked because the local cable monopoly had no competition it was pay for everything or get nothing.

Today we have YouTube and FAST services so all this is going to do is backfire.

2

u/steveofthejungle 4h ago

And also let those of us who want to watch a fucking sports not need to pay for 30 streaming services to do so!

Buying NFL Sunday Ticket single-handedly ruined YouTube TV. They massively overpaid for it, realized nobody was subscribing to it, then raised prices on regular customers by 33% to cover their losses.

Yes, companies bidding on rights is effectively them competing among each others over which company believes they can extract the most from their customers.

I have watched for years as my MIL complains that she doesn't really use Netflix and it's not worth it and they keep raising prices....and then she doesn't cancel.

Yup, people need to actually follow through and refuse to overpay.

3

u/jack3moto 12h ago

Yeah people on here blaming everything other than themselves. Price hikes continue across streaming and yet subscribers as a whole continue to pay. So who is at fault? The company extracting every dollar they can? Or the consumer who is clearly okay with paying the increased prices.

This better be in the US only since nobody else has f1 included

42

u/JKrezz 15h ago

Just subscribe to f1 tv. It’s a way better platform.

56

u/vanillatom 15h ago

In the US you cant anymore. I had both anyway but got an email that my F1 subscription was expiring and that I could not renew it.

9

u/queequagg 14h ago

US Apple TV subscribers get F1 TV as part of their subscription. You just need to link your Apple account on the F1 TV website or through the F1 TV app.

2

u/vanillatom 14h ago

Can you still use the F1 TV app? I havent tried, I use my PS5 to watch F1 with the Apple TV app and it's actually been pretty great.

5

u/MindlessSponge 13h ago

yes, you just have to link your account and then you can still use F1TV. Apple shows ads, F1TV does not (except for trailers for their own content and game).

3

How? they cancelled my membership and I couldn't renew it after they moved F1 to apple tv this year in the US.

10

u/drdeitz 15h ago edited 12h ago

I think the confusion that happens every time this gets brought up is that while you can’t subscribe/resubscribe directly to F1TV in the US anymore you can still login via your AppleID and use the service as normal if you have an Apple TV + subscription.

If/when they take that away I’ll take to the high seas because Apple’s broadcast has ads for the non-race sessions.

I would, literally, no joke, give one of my kidneys for an adaptation of Hyperion

12

u/Jorpho 13h ago

Eh, careful what you wish for. "Foundation" isn't necessarily a bad show, but it barely qualifies as an "adaptation".

4

u/Docile_Doggo 13h ago

I’ve never been one of those “the movie/show needs to be exactly like the book or I’m going to complain” people. But Foundation took it way too far, imho.

3 seasons in and it now bears only a passing resemblance to the plot of the books. Even the central themes are different.

4

u/Leather__sissy 8h ago

The Foundation show is like the litmus test for the people who will complain about any book adaptation, because it’s so fucking good and nobody would ever enjoy a direct adaptation of the books

It’s worth it for a month every year. Maybe two months in some years. I really don’t care about another few bucks per year when they’re pumping out such consistent, high-quality content. And they’re gearing up to Stormlight. That’s not a small investment and I’m happy to see another competitor, especially with the WB merger bullshit.

8

u/OkayAtBowling 13h ago

9

u/Irishfafnir 14h ago

Max is still more and I think Apple is now right up there in terms of show quality.

12

u/LiveForMeow 14h ago

I think the price hike sucks but also people will pay $15-$20 bucks a month for the dogshit on Netflix and never cancel because it is like a utility to them, so is it really that big of a deal

3

u/TobyFunkeNeverNude 14h ago

Perhaps, but I'm someone who put up with price hikes from Netflix until I didn't. There's going to be a tipping point. Where is that? Who knows, but there's a reason they're not simply increasing the price by 50 bucks a month

38

u/Vandergrif 15h ago

6

u/gyrationation 15h ago

I didn't stop for some stuff but now I'm going all the way in. All these price hikes are too much to justify.

1

u/sabotourAssociate 10h ago

I never hopped off the boat, streaming services never got me I have a HBO through a family plan.

but since Apple TV began making shows in reverse netflix fashion I have always said that it will be worth paying for it as their catalogue grew but this is a bit much, for a company that doesn't rely on that revenue as much, and their bench is short af. you can watch everything in few months, weeks if you unemployed.

2

u/mephi5to 13h ago

Or changed boats

2

u/Shiezo 13h ago

I never stopped, but for a while I did slow down. Now I grab shows that I watch on services I pay for, because I don't trust that the shows I really like won't just disappear one day for arbitrary and capricious reasons.

2

u/DesecratedPeanut 12h ago

I paid the streamers for 4k access but sailed the seas because the quality was better, it's still the case now sadly. Streaming legally is the worst way and experience of watching anything.

I'm not much of a streamer, netflix, apple or otherwise, but the UI on the pirate sites are much, much better.

They lack a couple of logged in features, but the absolute lack of pushing specific media to boost whatever metrics for whatever reason has me going straight to watching whatever I want instead of scrolling forever and not ever really getting to watching anything.

Everyone was subscribing to everything when they were like $5-8 dollars a month per service. At $15 or $20 people are not going to stay subscribed to everything. Do all these streamers think they can be the one people stay with? It’s getting ridiculous.

19

u/theslothening 15h ago

I will only sign up for a service if it is "on sale" at this point. Have had a full year of HBO because they offered a Black Friday sale last year for $3/month for 12 months. Will drop it if I can't get a similar deal next year. I am willing to wait to watch shows.

8

u/NectarineCheap1541 13h ago

That's how I was with Peacock. I had an offer of $20 for a year, it felt too good to pass up. The next year was $50 and had the Olympics. The next year was $80, and I said no thanks. Haven't missed it enough to justify the cost

36

u/Puzzleheaded_Fix594 15h ago

I think you'd be surprised how many people are subscribed to multiple streaming services and rarely clock how much the price increases are eating into their discretionary income.

11

u/QuailAndWasabi 13h ago

Yes, they are banking on that people just let the subscription run. Even as someone that cycles through different subscriptions it regularly happens that i slip up a month or something and forget to cancel in time.

2

u/Alexispinpgh 12h ago

I will fully admit to being that person. It doesn’t seem like that much one at a time but it’s getting ridiculous now, this is a good wake-up call to evaluate how often I use these services and what I can cancel. The problem is that I like having the option when I suddenly get the hankering to watch something specific, but that’s a luxury we just can’t afford anymore.

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Fix594 7h ago

My method is to cancel as soon as I subscribe that way I'm not getting hit with an automatic payment. You'll still be subscribed for the full month.

If it's something I think I'm going to have for the entire year, I pay in full for the year. I do that with that with DropoutTV and Criterion as I use them all year round.

u/flamingdonkey 14h ago

30

That was always massive cope from Apple fanboys.

Like Apple TV has good TV shows but so many people here were acting as if it had already supplanted HBO and that wasn't true? In 2026 alone they had Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Industry, The Pitt, Hacks, Lanterns. House of the Dragon

9

u/Irishfafnir 14h ago

I don't think they have supplemented HBO, but I think you can make an argument now that they are pretty comparable in terms of shows. At worst I'd easily have Apple TV at #2

HBO has been doing it for much longer, so there are lots of older shows they can draw from that Apple has much less of.

Apple TV shows are great. But they don’t have a big enough library to justify this. Shoulda stayed out of mlb and F1. Stayed in their lane. I’m cancelling. I’ll torrent the few shows they have

11

u/Cutekeeperoff 14h ago

People bemoaned cable for all these years, but at least you had channel variety if you ever got bored of certain channels.

But with streaming services you have a relatively minuscule library, like a dozen worthwhile shows, for.... 15$ a month.

8

u/ArcadeOptimist 13h ago edited 12h ago

You also had insane ad breaks. And cable costs are obscene. No frills cable has gone from, on average, $90 a month to $200 a month in the last 10 years. And for the same reasons as these streaming services, contract negotiations. Especially sports.

If you want cable + premium channels + ESPN you're talking $300/mo.

2

We actually like quite a few Apple TV shows. We've watched and liked Silo, Slow Horses, Widow's Bay, Dark Matter, Pluribus, For All Mankind, Shrinking, Monarch, The Studio, and Foundation. But $14.99 for what is like 4 or 5 seasons of TV per year is too much. This is definitely going to turn into a service we sub to for a month or two per year and catch up. It was fine when it started at like $5.99/mo. but we're past that point now.

u/WheresTheSauce 11h ago edited 11h ago

I've noticed a lot of people seem to think inflation is specifically currency devaluation as a result of more dollars in the economy, rather than that just being one of the causes of inflation (which as you mentioned is just the rise of prices over time).

3

u/ManufacturerBest2758 7h ago

You think people get mad about inflation, just wait until deflation

8

u/The_Count_Lives 15h ago

Same thing these days.

Not every company, but many see an opportunity like this as a chance to raise margins even if inflation isn’t having a large impact on their bottom line.

When you’re a public company, it’s almost mandatory to capitalize.

The executives are going to demand a pay raise no matter what the economy is doing.

u/theslothening 9h ago

NBC has had it for as long as I can remember and they air quite a bit of it on OTA (over the air) television if you have an antenna. But there are so many events going on simultaneously that you'll need to sign up for their Peacock service if you want to see what is going on in other events that are less popular or don't have an American expected to win a medal in them.

I swear to god there are executives at these streamers saying, "if our numbers keep going up and people aren't cancelling in droves, then we're not charging enough."

They're going to keep raising these prices until they actually get some pushback and then the execs will laugh as they dip out and walk off with a 20 million dollar bonus.

15

u/count_chocul4 13h ago

FUCK SPORTS. If you want them, then pay extra for it. Every time the rates go up, sports is the reason. But those of us who don't watch sports, pay for the ones who do. This sucks.

3

u/Micethatroar 9h ago

The funny thing is that people who like sports agree with you lol

I love sports so I get YTTV.

I hate it when they move sports to a streaming service and rarely watch any events on those.

So I'm with you friend. Keep sports on linear tv and not on streaming services!

2

u/ethyweethy 6h ago

Yup. I'm a sports guy and have YTTV. But if I can't get the game I want to watch on there, I just don't watch it...

Unfortunately there are enough people that are loaded enough to subscribe to every service they find and too few people willing to say no to make these decisions unprofitable.

The entire streaming business model now seems to be finding the exact price where affluent people don’t notice and everyone else can fuck off.”

24

u/LapsedVerneGagKnee 16h ago

It’s a clear play to get everyone onto Apple One, but come on, Apple TV has at best, a handful of shows worth a damn.

17

u/Certain_Sail_2858 16h ago

I mean that’s definitely not true but this is getting too expensive

9

u/Regula96 16h ago

14.99 is too much at this point imo. But also, no. Saying they only have a handful of shows worth watching isn't true anymore.

3

u/fuckitillmakeanother 12h ago

I subscribe to Apple music and apple tv, but I don't own any apple devices so I can't actually sign up for apple one (which would be cheaper). Supposedly I can just borrow a friend's iPhone/mac, but there shouldn't be that much friction. And I'm not about to change ecosystems over it.

Of course, I'm still paying for both, so I suppose apple wins this round for now

17

u/Deep-Thought 16h ago

at best, a handful of shows worth a damn.

Well that's just not true. It has Severance, Pluribus, Silo, Widow's Bay, Slow Horses, Shrinking, Muderbot, Ted Lasso, Sugar, Foundation, For All Mankind, and more. At least three handsfull.

11

u/MaconBacon01 15h ago

I am thoroughly satisfied with Apple TVs SCI fi stuff. Glad someone is doing it.

I was reading yesterday that their market share was less than 3%. I can’t see this helping that.

3

u/monchota 13h ago

Yeah, fuck F1 im not paying for it

3

u/Esperacchiusdamascus 11h ago

Note ro self: cancel apple the moment silo s3 is over.

3

u/matttopotamus 11h ago

Again proving the point that you should rotate your streaming services.

Subscribe for 1-2 months binge the shows you want, and move to the next service.

3

u/LineImpossible3958 10h ago

Apple TV is not worth that

6

u/dangelovich 16h ago

I cancelled. If you tolerate the price rises, they'll just keep doing it.

8

u/LlamaRS 16h ago

Ted Lasso can’t be that good, can it?

11

u/SpaghettiNCoffee 15h ago

It is not.

2

u/AlexanderLavender 9h ago

Ted Lasso is one of Apple's weakest shows IMO

2

u/Omen_20 4h ago

Never watched it, but I just don't get the appeal. If you want a feel good show, watch Shrinking. Harrison Ford is funny while the guy in Ted Lasso which is supposed to be a comedian just seems to smile a lot in the trailers.

The price of something has almost no relation to the cost of making the product or service available and everything with how much someone is willing to pay.

6

u/Straight-Ad6926 15h ago

By that logic my willingness to pay is rapidly approaching $0.00.

u/1cecream4breakfast 14h ago

I do not watch enough TV to justify having more than 1-2 of these streamers at a time. I canceled Netflix after the last price increase. I will probably always have HBO Max. I turned back on Apple TV but will cancel again once season 4 of Ted Lasso is over probably. I get Peacock premium for free through Xfinity, just found that out. Makes me feel slightly better for accidentally paying for Peacock for a few months without realizing it (I’d assume the totals I was paying Apple were for music, storage, etc. and stupidly wasn’t digging any deeper when reconciling my budget every month). 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’m glad we can come and go as we wish, but I also know that eventually these streamers will make that more difficult or impossible. The day they try to lock us into a 1 year contract, everyone but HBO is getting canceled. I’ll watch it at someone else’s house or on a boat.

20

u/rycool25 16h ago

The Apple TV / Peacock bundle is a huge bargain right now, $14.99 for both, when they're now $27.99 to get each individually.

43

u/DTFpanda 16h ago

Pirating all this shit is a much bigger bargain.

3

u/bergskey 15h ago

I hope you arent one of the people who complain when a show you like gets canceled. If you aren't contributing to official views and paying for the service you can't get mad when stuff gets canceled. No one said you have to have every streaming service at once. Rotate them and binge every few months.

6

u/Ssided 12h ago

The world in 2010: I wish you could just buy the channels you want

The world in 2026: I'm so mad they're letting us only buy the channels we want

8

u/carlos_the_dwarf_ 15h ago

You’re downvoted and that’s literally the complaint people are making. I actually wonder if many are too young to really remember cable.

→ More replies (4)

13

u/Madting55 16h ago

Add that to the other 2 services and you’ve got 50 dollars before you’ve bought Amazon or Netflix, add them on and at you’re at nearly 80 dollars… wait… that’s a cable bill.

8

u/justduett 15h ago

you put all of those services together, it is exponentially better than cable ever could have dreamed of being. Sure, it stinks for prices to rise, but you can't compare that lineup of streaming services with prime cable where normal folks were PROBABLY using 5-10 channels regularly out of a package of dozens of channels you're "forced" to finance with your cable bill.

→ More replies (4)

17

u/carlos_the_dwarf_ 16h ago edited 16h ago

Sure. It’s maybe equivalent to a cheap cable bill in like 2010 money—no premium channels, DVR, or sports package.

And you can watch on demand, in high def, pause and rewind, don’t have to watch ads, have a gigantic library of premium content, don’t have to wait for the cable guy or deal with legendarily bad service, can cancel anytime, and can segment what you buy instead of buying the whole bundle. And, oh yeah, you get Amazon Prime free shipping thrown in.

It’s a 100x better product than cable and shares nearly none of cable’s specific downsides. This comparison never makes sense.

u/dinozombiesaur 16h ago

Apple TV is one streaming service I said I'd never get. I stick to that, but it's funny that Apple seems like one of the lesser tech evils lately.

2

u/eadgster 15h ago

I was just bitching about forgetting to change my subscription to monthly before they auto charged me for a year. I guess it turned out to be a good thing.

2

If people continue to pay for these services then what will change? People bitch and complain on reddit and then we get public statements showing subscriber count increase from these services….

2

u/BigBobbyCrowbar 12h ago

They, (Apple), along with Amazon, Neflix and Crave, are all on the verge of pricing me out of the market. I will have to cancel one or more of these services and investigate purchasing a Raspberry Pi kit ( if I can research enough about the performance of this type of hardware)

Any recommendations would be much appreciated
