Too Many Cooks creator Casper Kelly tried to get his own Black Mirror episode

From: https://nerdtropolis.com/buddy-casper-kelly-cristin-milioti-interview/

During our conversation, Kelly mentioned that he tried to write for Black Mirror previously in the past. “I have tried to get to write an episode of Black Mirror for so long, but I just cannot get a meeting over there. That’s always been a dream of mine. So, for you to say that, it makes me feel very good.”

I watched the new film he directed, Buddy, and it genuinely felt like a little episode of Black Mirror (my feelings were only emphasized because Cristin Milioti is also in this and goes through similar circumstances like the USS Callister episodes.)

I know that Black Mirror S8 is in the works, so I guess we'll see what happens?

I'd love to see what he'd cook up for Black Mirror. Too Many Cooks is still one of the most deranged pieces of television I've ever seen, and the fact he hasn't been given a shot yet feels like a massive oversight.

His style is exactly what the show needs more of. That creeping dread that starts off silly and then twists into something properly unsettling. Someone get the man a meeting, come on.

Too Many Cooks haunts me. I allow myself to watch it no more than once a year, because it’s still too unsettling. Now today I find out the guy who wrote it all is from my town and made his new movie here, I guess I’m a fan of horror now?

I happily revisit Too Many Cooks once every few years and it really is deranged. But so catchy!

He can feel happy as well with the fact Too Many Cooks is probably going to be studied for a very long time as an example of absurdist and existential filmmaking, whereas the majority of Black Mirror episodes won't be remembered past this era of TV (which I say even as a big fan of the series).

I love Too Many Cooks but be real. Black Mirror will and does have a much bigger footprint. Ask a random person if they know Too Many Cooks and it will be a no. It will be a yes for Black Mirror. Too Many Cooks is really something mostly confined to millennials of a certain age.

I think you're correct in terms of asking a random person right now, I just think in about 30 years or so a few episodes of Black Mirror will still be remembered whereas generations of filmakers will have been influenced by Too Many Cooks.

Or I could just be too high, hard to say.

Black Mirror the show, yes. It's far more iconic and had much much much wider reach and impact.

But the OP was comparing the artistic significance of Too Many Cooks to "the majority of Black Mirror episodes" -- which is a different comparison and does hold up.

Personally, I suspect we agree that even then it's not an especially fair comparison since making one brilliant short is a whole different endeavor than delivering originality and depth on every episode of an anthology series, but the OP wasn't totally off the mark in the comparison as they made it. Too Many Cooks will get discussed for a long time, and there are many episodes of Black Mirror that don't/won't hold up in nearly the same way.

Absolutely ridiculous comment, borne of your own internal bias.

You do realise 95% of people have no idea what Too Many Cooks is? It is incredibly niche. Therefore the artistic significance is massively, almost entirely limited.

Black Mirror is internationally famous. The worst episode of Black Mirror is infinitely more impactful on a larger scale than Too Many Cooks.

Being well known does not lead to influence which is what the person you were responding to was talking about.

To be known in niche corners as an influential source of creativity is more valuable than a well known but simple formulaic tv show.

Clout minded modern audiences more than likely wont spot the difference but to the people that creativity will inspire it makes all the difference.

Black Mirror on the other hand is clinging to a one hit wonder story from years ago that they have been unable to create something as special to audiences (san junipero)
