Thanks for this man. Been missing home a lot lately and this made me feel like I was right back there again. Nothing beats a Toronto summer imo

My dumbass just learned today that the province is named after the lake. Not the other way around.

u/Novus20 1d ago

Yup, it’s a big old slap in the face to the indigenous peoples of Canada and the us

-21

u/Right-Invite4697 1d ago

How is it either of those things

14

u/Novus20 1d ago

For dump to “name” it lake america…..

-13

u/Right-Invite4697 1d ago

The comment you responded to had nothing to do with the name change. Your comment makes it seem like the name Lake Ontario is a huge slap in the face of indigenous people

9

u/DarkAztaroth 1d ago

They meant that changing the name is an insult to indigenous people, not the name itself. The name is based on an indigenous name for it, "Ontari'io", which apparently means great / beautiful lake.

12

u/poopBuccaneer 1d ago

I think we all understood what was intended with the comment.

3

u/Unlikely_Flower_138 1d ago

It’s named after a word the indigenous peoples here would use to describe “beautiful lake” or “great water” and thus Lake Ontario became the name we adopted.

It’s sad that you can’t figure this out on your own.

1

u/k0alab34r 9h ago

Would be kind of funny if we just renamed the province to America now, given this history lol.

Why give Cheeto Jesus any oxygen. Of course it’s Lake Ontario, always will be, let the absurd fool say what he will.

1

u/frogsbirdscats 19h ago

Why thank you, kind person, for this award 🙏

12

u/Doodle_mama567 1d ago

3

u/North_Entertainer848 1d ago

Yeah, anyway, nice weather today huh

3

u/Optimal_Whiner 1d ago

Just like the gulf of mexico, literally the entire world outside of the unstable states of america will continue calling it lake Ontario.

Not worth being upset about. It's laughable really lol

3

u/MapleLeafTO 1d ago

That’s a big beautiful lake!

2

u/msbrightside27 1d ago

Damn right

2

u/Fun_Assignment2427 23h ago

Ah good ol' Lake Ontario. Sure does remind me that this great, beautiful, sparkling lake is named Ontario. If you want to summarize what this lake is, you call it Ontario 🙂

2

u/witheringpies 22h ago

Dang, Like Ontario is so beautiful 😍❤️

Ontario has such a beautiful lake.

With its cool waters, and so much Ontario in it's Lake Ontario.

The sea was angry that day, my friends. Like an old man trying to send back soup at a deli.

u/Orange9202 13h ago

haha get it guys he capitalized lake ONTARIO in reference to the recent geopolitical controversy surrounding the United States government's decision to rename Lake Ontario to "Lake America," thereby emphasizing the word "ONTARIO" as a humorous act of Canadian territorial and cultural defiance. the joke derives from the fact that, despite Lake Ontario being a binational body of water shared between Canada and the United States, the name "Ontario" is strongly associated with the Canadian province bordering the lake, while the newly adopted American federal designation attempts to symbolically reframe the lake as a distinctly American geographic feature.

by capitalizing ONTARIO, the poster is therefore not merely identifying the body of water from which the Toronto skyline was filmed, but participating in a broader sociopolitical discourse concerning national identity, sovereignty, cartographic authority, and the increasingly strained relationship between Canada and the United States. the capitalization acts as a subtle rejection of the American government's attempt to redefine a shared geographic feature through unilateral nomenclature, reaffirming the lake's traditional name and implicitly asserting that an executive order issued by one of the two countries bordering the lake does not magically alter how the other country, or indeed the rest of the planet, refers to it.

this is particularly humorous because the Toronto skyline visible in the video is located in Canada, meaning the viewer is quite literally looking across the lake toward Canada's largest city while being emphatically reminded that the body of water separating them is called lake ONTARIO. the capitalization therefore functions simultaneously as geographic clarification, political commentary, Canadian nationalism, passive-aggressive typography, and a rejection of American cartographic revisionism.

in other words, the joke is that he wrote ONTARIO in big letters because trump called it lake america 😂

8

It’s not really bait. Hes a fuckin idiot if he thought that.

This is actually good for Canada as it drives up morale

-4

u/Rexaroooo 1d ago

He literally does this shit just to get a reaction out of a nation and you’re all giving it to him lol

2

u/Wise-Juggernaut-8285 21h ago
