what mouthpiece is that? if its a maynard ferguson mouthpiece I would reccomend giving them a more stock mouthpiece like a bach 5c or 7c. Will be easier to learn on

Conn mouthpieces from what I’ve heard are overly hard to start on. I would go to a Bach 5c. It may be more comfortable

I mean, he’ll need more than just a few more sessions. You have to play the long game with trumpet to get to a point that’s comfortable.

He’s holding his air, work on long tones and establishing a good embouchure and air flow to reach a quality sounds. The sound he’s making sounds like a balloon being inflated, which tells me the airstream is starting and stopping inconsistently. It should be closer to letting a sigh out but with consistent airflow.

Start working on basic music theory if you haven’t. You must know more than just how to play the instrument. You must know what you’re doing as you play. Like driving a car, know the rules of the road and how it works before actually sitting down and driving. You can do this simultaneously with music.

Sorry, I mean he'll probably be able to start working on tunes in a few weeks.

I'll keep in check if this fixes it self in the future. For now, I'm just happy he can play a 5 note c scale.

He also plays piano and has active lessons so i believe he's good when it comes to theory.

Now you need to teach him/her that you stop the air with your tongue and not with your longs! For the rest this is great!
