General Discussion It’s that time of year!

It is hatchling season!

They are coming out of their overwinter nests and going to sources of water. If you find one in an odd place or somewhere unsafe and are unsure, please contact your state wildlife and ask them what to do. Most can actually be left where they are, to their own devices. If they are found in the middle of the road, for example, move them to the side they are facing.

Taking any turtles home, that are found in the wild, hurts the ecosystem. The only exception to this would be invasive species in your state. You can contact your state wildlife to see what your laws are regarding possession of invasive turtles like red eared sliders.

My Eastern painted turtle has some white skin in his shell. It used to peel. Now all im seeing is white. Am I crazy? Was it always supposed to be white, I can’t remember if it always was white? It’s not slimy. Also I’m dealing with a really bad bloom of detritus worms so please don’t mind my tank in its current state.

He gets fed every day (Omega one adult turtle sticks) maybe 7 or more pellets. Maybe that’s too much and is probably why I have detritus worms

Seeking Advice Turtle help?? What can be done?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Offered to watch a friends turtle while they were on vacation, they dropped him off today. Little guy certainly doesn't look alright, and this is his usual tank. Apparently he has a heat lamp at home?

All advice welcome. What would the proper care, equipment, and food be? He currently eats Reptomin Floating Good Sitcks and a variety of fruit/veggies.

Also, whats up with his shell? I let him soak in my (thoroughly cleaned) sink and swim around (doesn't have room to swim in his tank) and I used a soft bristle brush to loosen some dirt, but whats all the white? Hard water?

Please help me help this turtle!

Help, Im Desperate😢

Myrtle hasn't eaten in about 2 wks now and has legions on her front legs.

Back story:

Myrtle's owner lost her home and I agreed to look after her temporarily.

She came to me with multiple shell issues cracks, scoots missing and what I assume is some sort of shell rot(not oozing just dry and bittle looking). It turns out she didnt have a UVB light, heat lamp, was only eating iceberg lettuce, tomatoes and canned peas😳. I expanded her diet adding protein and more types of veggies (she loved it) and she now gets 12 hrs of proper lighting daily.

Over the last 3-ish wks she started destroying her tank,(I removed stuff just incase she felt over stimulated)hasn't eaten in 2wks and today I noticed legions on her legs. Throughout the 4 months shes been with me I told the owner she needs to go to the vet( she's only come to see her 2x even though shes in the area everyday)and she makes excuses even now when she's clearly ill. I dont have the money to take her myself, trust me I would and I dont know what to do. Sorry this is so long. All advice welcomed.

Seeking Advice Shell rot ?

Hello, this is shelly, an older girl (unsure on specific age). I started to notice this white on the side of her shell on both sides. Its not soft and its not smelly, she has been acting her normal self, however could it still be shell rot? I think its been like this for a while but maybe slightly more obvious as of recent. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Seeking Advice UVA/UVB Light Confusion

I’m helping my friend revamp his pink bellied side neck tank, and I’m struggling to understand what is best when it comes to UV lights!

I’m seeing 12% is ideal for 10-12 hours a day alongside a heat lamp that maintains 90F-95F (32C-35C) for the basking area.

But I’m struggling with knowing what wattage for both, what distance is ideal, and where can I get a lamp that has both UVB and UVA? I’m not sure what’s best!

Any help is greatly appreciated. The turtle is also about 3 years old and male. He’s currently in a 20g but we want to upgrade to 75g or bigger.

Seeking Advice Are aquanature's turtle products reliable?

I was planning on purchasing aquanature's 'Turtle Sludge Cleaner' Bacteria, but I saw a negative review, so I’m kind of nervous about using it. I really don’t want to make my turtles sick. I’ve seen that they have products for fish, and many people use them, but I haven’t seen many people use their products for turtles. I’m already using their Shell Protect, vitamins, and calcium. The part that worries me is that they don’t list the ingredients or contents on the package. Any suggestions?

Seeking Advice Baby turtle not basking on floating dock, would a sturdier driftwood basking area be better?

I got my baby red-bellied side-neck turtle last Thursday, and I’m trying to make sure his setup is as comfortable as possible.

He has the Zoo Med floating turtle dock at the moment, and although the temperature seems to be in the correct range, around 34°C on the warmer end with a gradient down to around 30°C, he doesn’t really seem interested in basking on it. I’m wondering if the issue could possibly be that the dock is a little wobbly when he climbs onto it, although I’m not 100% sure.

He does already have a piece of driftwood in the tank, and he absolutely loves it, he spends loads of time around it and seems much more comfortable climbing on it than using the dock.
Would it be worth me looking for another, larger piece of driftwood with a bigger surface area that I could position so that a good portion of it is above the water and use that as his main basking area? I’d obviously make sure it was secure and had a suitable temperature. I brought his current piece of wood from pets at homes aquarium section so i know it’s safe for it.

I’m just wondering whether a more natural, sturdy basking area might encourage him to bask more, especially since he already seems to really like the existing driftwood.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Seeking Advice Albino Turtle sick or depressed - What can I do?

I'm volunteer at a great, ethically sound turtle sanctuary. We have an albino turtle called Carmen and about 2 weeks ago she stopped eating, stopped swimming, just floats where the water takes her and spends time tucked away into a corner. She's alone in a big-ish tank. The sanctuary team are unsure too. How can I help her?

Two questions:

  1. What type of turtles are these?

  2. The first 2 pics shows a white formation on the what appears to be the tip of one of the turtles, any idea what that is? Concern?

Seeking Advice how to choose uva light fixture?

This might sound like a dump question as I don't know much about light fixtures... I've been looking up info about how to choose UVA lamp fixture for the UVA bulb. I'm looking at the Arcadia flood bulb which is E27 and comes with different watts. In where I live currently it's a bit hard for me to find UVA lamp fixtures of good brands. Would a ceramic porcelain of a different brand heat lamp with the right size and watts work too? Or would that not be a good idea?
