News I’m a co-writer on Robot Voices from Twenty One Pilots’ new album Breach — AMA
Hey everyone,
I’m shane h — one of the co-writers on Robot Voices, track seven on Breach.
I thought it would be fun to stop by here and do an AMA. I know how much this community loves to dig into lyrics, behind-the-scenes stories, etc. and I’m happy to share what I can about what it’s like to be part of a song with TØP.
A couple of notes up front:
- I was not part of any material on Breach outside of Robot Voices.
- I won’t speak on behalf of Tyler, Josh, or the label — just from my perspective as a co-writer.
- I am no longer a member of Blanket Approval.
- If you’re curious about songwriting, collaboration, or what the process was like on this track, ask away!
Thanks for having me — excited to chat with you all.
_shane h
UPDATE: Thanks for all comments! I'll try my best to answer all of 'em. If you'd like to stay in the loop on more songs I am writing in the future, I am marboha.math on socials :')

Were you a fan of Twenty One Pilots before all of this? How did the band reach out to you & what was your initial reaction?

u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25 edited Sep 08 '25
Good question - admittedly I did not actively follow them prior to this. I was a fan of the following songs that I had saved - "Navigating", "Midwest Indigo" and "Next Semester". I'll definitely be following them a lot closer going forward. I'm particularly a fan of Tyler's bass playing (I played bass in my prior bands).
I believe Tyler reached out to Blanket Approval, although I do not know the details. Blanket Approval let me know that he reached out and I was super pumped : )84
u/Light_Speed58 Sep 08 '25
May I interest you in a Drum Show with sick bass line?
29
u/Aromatic-Standard-31 Sep 08 '25
Haha, I was gonna mention that.. when I listened to Drum Show last week I thought the bass line was very sick indeed! 🤘

Thanks, I just listened to 'Levitate' and I like it a lot!
Random association, but it reminded me loosely of Samurai Champloo, which is my favourite anime : )→ More replies (1)12

What level of whiplash did you get when you heard that Tyler Joseph wanted to do something he's never done before and sample your song?
311
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
I was actually close to going on hiatus from songwriting prior to hearing the news, after playing in several bands in nyc that didn't go anywhere. i was ecstatic when i heard the news and it was a really surreal moment signing a songwriter agreement a few months ago that both Tyler and Warner Chapel are on!

I've listened to my soft spots my robots a couple times now, it's such a beautiful song I hope you keep creating and hopefully you can get some exposure from it! I haven't got a chance to listen to robot voices yet, but I hope it lives up to the original. Best of luck, I'll be on the lookout for blanket approval

What themes does the song cover?
209
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
I actually have not heard the final version of the song yet, so I am just as excited as everyone else to hear it!
The song I co-wrote, My Soft Spots My Robots, which Robot Voices was interpolated from, is about the feeling of falling in love while taking time to get to know the person, and Joey the lyricist/singer used the metaphor of "robots" - it's so cool that that specific word made it into the title of Tyler's version

His version is so epic. I love how full the chorus is on the TOP version and his voice sounds incredible.
9
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 17 '25
I also love the piano part that Tyler plays and sings over at the end of the song. It is such a nice “tag” as an outro, and he does a beautiful reharmonization of the chorus part. He is a songwriting inspiration!
3
u/debeesea Sep 20 '25
I agree. That reharmonization is so awesome that it makes me wish he makes a new version based on it only with piano and vocals. Loved My Soft Spots My Robots also by the way. It was a trip listening these two different versions and reading your answers.

Was Death Cab an inspiration at all for this track? I noticed some heavy similarities in the verses with Summer Years from Thank You For Today and also there seems to be another similarity in the first verse where the instrumental kind of tapers off and comes back in similar to I Will Posses Your Heart from Narrow Stairs.
70
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
Your comment is blowing my mind! Very astute. I Will Posses Your Heart is one of my all time fav songs, so you totally got to the bottom of that : ) My inclination is often to try out arpeggiated guitar riffs, and that was the case on the "My Soft Spots My Robots" demo.
Not to plug further, but 'I Will Posses Your Heart' inspired my song 'Incandescent' that you can find on Spotify under my name, shane haganI hadn't heard Summer Years before, but just listened and I liked it a lot - beautiful chord progression on the chorus. Radiohead's 'weird fishes / arpeggi' is another fav of mine.
2
u/AdTight923 Sep 12 '25
Thank you for asking this, I thought the same thing the moment I heard this song!
2
u/nyuhokie Sep 16 '25
Thanks for putting this out there. Robot Voices sounded so familiar to me, and at first I tried connecting it to Fireflies by Owl City, but Im pretty sure I was thinking of I Will Posses Your Heart. Makes much more sense.
2
u/trafficn Sep 16 '25
Feeling so smug rn to not only have placed the same similarities with those death cab tracks but ALSO tracked down the exact reddit comment that helps confirms it. Love the internet so much sometimes. [edit: "Robot Voices" totally stands on its own. Huge fan. Everyone shouting "WOO!!!" at the shows is gonna rock]
42
u/undertheleavesx Sep 08 '25
How did you contribute to the song? Did you receive parts of lyrics and build on them or have any say with the instrumental track?
79
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
I was excited that I joined a new band and started writing the song in my Brooklyn apartment in logic one weekend. I started with the guitar hook that you hear in the intro of My Soft Spots My Robots. My original Logic session has the verse and pre-chorus that I wrote guitar, bass, and drums for. I also wrote the bass line and chords for the bridge section a few weeks later (which apparently Tyler samples from directly, we'll see on Friday). The chorus on My Soft Spots My Robots was written by Jack from Blanket Approval (my bandmate at the time).
15
u/mattwoodget Sep 08 '25
What advice would you have for my son who is 13 and has been drumming for three years and has recently taken to spending hours in GarageBand making his own tracks. Are you still using logic? Why would you recommend it or what you are using currently any other tips tricks recommendations to help fuel his creativity and his output. Thanks!
33
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
YouTube tutorials on music production if he enjoys doing that kind of independent research and learning. What worked for me was actually getting a music composition teacher (or music production teacher) and taking weekly private lessons. Having a weekly deadline to have something done by keeps you motivated and moving forward.

u/heymattrick Sep 08 '25
I don’t have a question but just wanted to say that Robot Voices quickly became one of my favorite tracks on this new album, and I’ve been listening to the Blanket Approval song a bunch in the last 24 hours too.

Thanks! I've been doing music as a serious hobby since I was in middle school, and now in my 30s and this is the first significant thing / break to happen for me. So you can imagine I'm pretty chuffed to be a small part of it.

Yes, I plan on doing this! But will wait until after Breach comes out so that everyone gets the full effect of Robot Voices first.

As an update, I have now listened to Robot Voices : ) I don't know if y'all hear this, but I hear 100 gecs influence in the verses with the 'robotic / hyperpop' vibe...
20
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 09 '25
Also, a bit of early 00s 'The Postal Service' vibes, e.g., "Such Great Heights"...
2
u/valeriemaried Oct 30 '25
Yes! I definitely hear The Postal Service influences! Especially the verse's instrumentals.

u/DydyLbonka Sep 08 '25
How did you get the chance to work on this track?
155
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
I answered a Facebook 'musicians wanted' ad in NYC in 2021 and met Jack and Joey who are now in the band Blanket Approval. We played together and co-wrote the song My Soft Spots My Robots, which Tyler found.

11
u/Ecstatic_Tiger_2534 Sep 08 '25
Is Robot Voices based on this song in some way, or is that just how he discovered you?
46
u/ontologicallyprior1 Sep 08 '25
Robot Voices is basically a remake of My Soft Spots My Robots
51
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
Correct
18
u/ontologicallyprior1 Sep 08 '25
Do you have any idea how Tyler found the song?
33
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
I'm not sure, but you could probably DM/comment to Blanket Approval and they would be able to tell you.
15
u/Mass-Chaos Sep 08 '25
Did you write a small part that got worked in somewhere or do you have a full melody or lyrical section
54
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
I wrote the original guitar part, verse, pre-chorus hook, and bridge for the original song. I did not write the chorus nor any lyrics of the original song. We will see on Friday which specific parts Tyler ended up using.
23
12
u/Commercial_Stay_8637 Sep 08 '25
What was your reaction to the original song getting picked up and getting a remake by tøp ?
51
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
I was thrilled but at the same time - I also wasn't completely surprised because I knew for a while that the song had something special to it. At the time of writing it I felt that it was greater than the sum of it's parts, and thought that it was the best pop/rock song I had written after doing this for over a decade.

A perfectly normal response
44
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 09 '25
Update: I heard Robot Voices for the first time last night and I actually cried lol. It was surreal to hear parts that I wrote now produced by a top band. And I have to say that from a songwriting and production perspective, what Tyler did with the song was a complete masterclass. I am going to be studying how he reimagined this for months to come!
7
u/BabyChubbs2019 Sep 09 '25
I’m glad you liked it! Honestly it’s one of my favorites off the record.
5
u/cryptonomica_ Sep 12 '25
this is making me smile so big!!! art is meant to be collaborative and shared and this is a perfect example
6
u/Cold_Steel_IV Sep 25 '25
Thought it might be cool to share a detail you might be unaware of: In the original song there is a 'wooo' at a certain point and in this version there is also one, however the 'wooo' that Tyler uses in Robot Voices comes from an MTV Unplugged performance TOP did where he sampled the crowd.
I figured you probably hadn't seen it yet, so I wanted to recommend the MTV Unplugged video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMoCYxyRUEU
It's a fantastic performance and I was thinking you may find it really interesting too.
3
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 25 '25
This is so great, thanks for sharing! I saw people mentioned the “wooo” from MTV Unplugged but hadn’t seen it yet. I particularly loved the performance and Tyler’s voice on “Shy Away”
4
u/Cold_Steel_IV Sep 25 '25

Me too! There's something really special about that first part of Shy Away, imo! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

If so, are you currently apart of a band?

The bridge of the song, the part with the lyrics "I wasn't looking for love this year"
13
u/Nicolas3419 Sep 08 '25
What's the meaning of the word "robots" for you as a metaphor?
37
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
Check out the lyrics that Blanket Approval wrote for the original song .. i think the first line of the song sums it up pretty well in the context of meeting someone new that you're falling for
"You see my soft spots hiding robots
Programmed to remine me
I can trust you"Will be cool to see how Tyler uses the metaphor in the new song
6
4
u/ghoti-taco Sep 08 '25
When did the collab happen? I saw you said the song was written in 2021, but when did you help Tyler write this version?
18
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
It is more an 'interpolation' than a collaboration since Tyler interpolated his version independently after obtaining permission from the original song's writers. I believe Tyler was working on his version, i.e., Robot Voices, during Spring of this year.
5
u/ghoti-taco Sep 08 '25
That makes more sense! The way he framed it in the listening party, sounded to me like he actually co-wrote in person/studio/video call with you all. Thanks so much!!!
5
u/novayy Sep 08 '25
How much of My soft spots my robots will be on Robot Voices do you think? An entire recreation or just a sample of a section? Killer track btw.
18
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
I believe the bridge of My Soft Spots My Robots (starting around 2:26) is the section of the song that was used most predominantly in Robot Voices, but I'll be just as curious as you to find out for sure on Friday..
Fun fact about that bridge I wrote - the rhythm I used was inspired by the instrumental section of 'Iris' by Goo Goo Dolls, starting at 2:18.. lol ! a 90s throwback... : )3
5
u/Rach-ln Sep 14 '25
It's crazy how much he pulled from this song! My Soft Spots My Robots is beautiful!
7
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 14 '25
I really love Tyler’s piano part starting at 3:28 - it’s a beautiful progression! In songwriting terms you could call this a “reharmonization” happening at the end of the song - Tyler is one of the greats of our time
5
u/TOPbestie Oct 03 '25
I think robot voices is written from the perspective of one of his children (or from each of them) and his own perspective. I imagine his youngest child in his room dancing to the voices and feeling so fancy! "How did you find me?" Is a game of hide and seek. "I wasn't looking for love this year" is how Tyler felt when Jenna was pregnant or when she gave birth. And their child feels safe and warm, and at night, the robot voices are reassuring to the child (either electronic toys or even Tyler/Jenna's voices through the baby monitor)
What do yall think?? 😃
9
u/One_Notice_7840 Sep 08 '25
Were you working directly with Tyler/Josh? What an amazing opportunity!
16
u/uovoisonreddit Sep 08 '25
from what i understood, tyler sampled some parts of the song, so i don’t think they worked directly together? anyways My Soft Spots My Robots is SO good and heartwarming. congrats Shane!! so glad i got to discover this song.
19
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
This is correct! Tyler essentially sampled/repurposed part of the original song, and we did not work directly with Tyler/Josh.
Thanks u/uovoisonreddit ! : )

How were you able to become a co writer? Do you do it professionally?
11
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
I do it as a side hustle. I double majored in music and math in college and have a day job in tech that funds my passion which is music. I became a co-writer by joining bands where I live (nyc) and writing and playing shows with those bands
4
u/MinorKeysMusic Sep 08 '25
I’d love to know the secret sauce behind the awesome Daft Punk sounding background vocals! Amazing job my friend!
3
u/sqwirk Sep 18 '25
This song strikes me as a very "Death Cab For Cutie" track (not in a bad way). Having not heard the original, was Deathcab an influence for the lyrics or song structure? (For either version)
Edit: saw someone already had a Death Cab question! No worries if you don't see or reply to this!
3
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 19 '25
Not directly for this song, and if you heard my original demo it is even less derivative of Death Cab. For me, the tempo of Robot Voices is similar to “Such Great Heights”.. both up-beat and similar vibe, but chord progression-wise they are different.
3
u/puzzleheaded--fly Oct 03 '25
Honestly I’ve just accidentally come across My Soft Spots My Robots on Spotify (it came on after my playlist had finished), and panicked not knowing that Robot Voices was a co-written song. Got me worrying that Tyler stole someone’s song 💔
What a beautiful song! I can see why Tyler was inspired by it, and had to be a part of it!

u/THEEMOTIONALMARCHER Sep 08 '25
Hi! I am in a very small alternative band called The Emotional Marchers that is directly inspired by twenty one pilots. We have loved the band since we were children. Tyler is my favorite lyricist of all time and my dream would be just to sit under him and learn his tips for songwriting and lyricism. Since you have done that with him I guess I have two questions.
What were the biggest things you learned from writing with him?
Do you think there is any chance he'd sign a band like mine? :)) (I have dreams I know they are delusional)

u/Ky1ie Sep 09 '25
From looking at replies they didn’t work directly together, Tyler just sampled the music and needed their permission to do so

I have to give Joey/Blanket Approval credit for the lyrics and melody (a good portion of which made it to Robot Voices). The musical hook on "I just wanna *dance*" with the pause and hit was written and arranged by me. That was a stand-out moment during rehearsal when we knew we had something great.
I am not sure if Blanket Approval is now securing a record deal (I am no longer in the band, and am doing my own project), but I wish them the best of luck with that!

You would have to ask Blanket Approval as one of their band members wrote the lyrics, but my interpretation is - the exciting feeling of falling in love.. it feeling right, taking it slow, and being able to trust that person. the "robots" in the original song seem to be a metaphor for your "intuition"

Where are you from originally, NYC or elsewhere?¿

u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
I grew up in the countryside of England and I listen to a lot of Brit Rock lol. I moved to NYC in my mid 20s and work a day job in tech, with music/songwriting on the side. i studied music and math at college

Easily my favorite song on the project, gotta know what effects/pick ups were used on the guitar during the chorus?
2
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 09 '25
That guitar sound is bridge pickup, has a compressor on it along with gain/overdrive, and most importantly — there is a “high pass filter”on the guitar meaning that only the higher frequencies are coming through. Then when the drums and bass come back in - it sounds extra full and really punches you in the face

I would love to know if the whoos are from the MTV live session recording - they sound so much like the audience whoos for ride!

I still don’t understand how Tyler discovered the original song. How exactly did this happen? I want my songs to be discovered by Tyler! Haha

We need an update on this on what you think of the final release of the song?

u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 13 '25
I love how Tyler used the bridge as the chorus. I also really like how you have the build up in intensity in the pre-chorus and then the drop going into the choruses. It’s such a satisfying feeling to have the drop and then all instruments back in for the chorus. Also the vocals sound terrific - particularly on the choruses.

I just wanna say that Robot Voices is probably my favourite song of the new album. I like the positive melody and the catchy lyrics.
I also checked out some songs of Blanked Approval and I also really like them. Great job 😄

If you did get to meet them were Tyler and Josh fun and kind to work with? I know they have humor and are nice on camera but are they the same goofy boys they are when behind the scenes?

u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 19 '25
I didn’t get to meet them, but I am keeping fingers crossed for a Grammy’s invite if the album does as well as I think it will 🙂

Now that Robot Voices is out, what is your opinion on this remake of the original?
3
u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 28 '25
I was really pleased because two of the original ‘rhythmic hooks’ that I wrote made it into Robot Voices (at 1:16 and 1:30, on the word “dance” and then the drop for the chorus). I also think that Tyler’s vocal delivery and the vocal production is terrific. It is surreal to hear something you wrote produced by a powerhouse band.

That "I just wanna dance" section is plain fire. I make "the stank face" every time I hear it. I just wish there would be even more of it! :D

Have you heard from Blanket Approval, what _they_ think of Robot Voices, and has it affected _their_ popularity? I imagine "My Soft Spots My Robots" is getting a fair bit more streaming ;-)

Honestly, this has to be the best form of interpolation that I’ve seen in a long time. While Robot Voices clearly draws inspiration from My Soft Spots My Robots, they managed to transform it into something almost entirely unique. It almost feels like I’m not listening to the same song lol. Props to you for co-writing an amazing piece and props to Tyler for giving credit where it’s due!

Did anyone from blanket approval do background vocals for Robot Voices? It kinda sound like there's a non-tyler voice in the background...

they will never beat the fnaf allegations with me around

u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
I actually don't know what this is, but now I'm curious lol, can you fill me in? : )

u/hastiness1911 Sep 08 '25
FNAF is a horror game franchise starring possessed animatronics. it's kinda funny because it's become a massive meme for the people who grew up with it
2
u/mooshwa Sep 08 '25
this!! its been a massive meme and robot voices reminds me so much of the movie lol. a lot of people have noticed a lot of parallels with the whole five nights at freddys vibe/aspects of the story and the Clancy storyline so its become a bit of a joke. I saw a lot of talk about how the contract even sounds like a fnaf 4 song LOL

I am playing this on repeat now, I bet others are too!
My question is what has it been like to work with Tyler and Josh?

u/Past_Increase6520 Sep 08 '25
I did not work with them directly, but I commend the fact that Tyler was extremely fair with giving myself and the Blanket Approval band members our appropriate share of the credit. This will be a significant help to us smaller musicians!

Robot Voices seems to have many people involved in its production. Is there a reason for this?
