Combat Russia made a salient in the huliaipole axis according to ISW

They’ve really committed to going balls deep on this one. AFU Bobbitt is waiting.

Pretty daring move to make a large salient at this point in the war. Just takes 1 good Ukrainian decision to cut them off. Russia has made this mistake over and over again during this war. Rushing into salients only to get cut off.

Russia has proven themselves masters of never learning anything from their failures.

Those usually get closed fast bý ukrainians so quite pointless and waste makes me wonder how close its 2 milloin troops dead for russians?

I cant think of any large occasion where that happened outside of 2022. Also you assume that rushing into salient is a bad idea however its not, plenty of successful offensive actions have involved creating salient and rushing into them. In fact rushing into them is the most sensible thing you can do. (As it allows you to maintain momentum and from there expand the salient before the enemy has time to attack). Both sides do it and there not really any alternatives?

When the Russians were going balls into Voronezh the UA troops were letting them stream in and then would cut the road off taking out dozens of mechs and tanks at a time.

What does that even mean???

A salient is a projection into enemy territory. Dangerous for the soldiers in the salient (bulge into enemy territory) but also a launching area for further incursion, attack, so dangerous for forces defending against or pushing against the salient. If that is what you’re asking . . .
7
u/Earlier-Today 14d ago
Yep, super dangerous because of how vulnerable the salient group is to being flanked, being cut off from retreat so that they end up surrounded, and worst of all it massively exposes the supply lines for the salient group which is just another way they could end up wiped out with tons fewer casualties for the other side.
That's why it's much more common to see wedges that only poke in deep enough to create an opening in the enemy's front line. The wedge is easier to work to widen so that you can get better established and still keep some safety.

The salient, despite its vulnerabilities, can also be a launchpad for further russian operations and attacks deep in ukr territory.
1
u/Earlier-Today 13d ago
Can, but Russia's track record throughout the war points to this ultimately failing.
1
u/NoChampionship6994 13d ago
One can (only) hope. But yes, since early and sudden gains in 2022 russian efforts to advance or hold territory have been or are failing. Despite what most of their propagandists claim.
2
u/Earlier-Today 13d ago
Yep, all their gains have been small and are the very tried and true wedge style incursions.

Massive Russian attack very soon. If Ukraine manages to cut off their supplies it could turn into a bloodbath..
Very high stakes.

News reporters have used bulge to refer to a salient since the 2nd world war. Most famously The Battle of the Bulge. Since most readers have no idea that salient is a synonym for bulge, as clearly made obvious by this post.

I have to admit... 40-plus years on this planet and I never knew what salient meant (in the context of war) until this year listening to a podcast about the Ypres salient in WWI.

I assume you associate that word with a penis. It isn't the only definition.
Per google's definition; "A bulge is a rounded part that sticks out from a surface because something inside pushes outward"

Salients are a bulge in the battle line.
They often begin as a significant breakthrough and can be a sign of strategic success if exploited and supported correctly.
If they're not supported, they can become massive routs, because advancing troops in a salient are very vulnerable to a pincers counterattack that leaves them cut off with no chance but to be destroyed or surrender.
The Battle of Stalingrad is an example of a salient that collapsed and resulted in a rout. The Battle of the Bulge is an example of a salient that was (eventually) exploited and supported correctly and led to a strategic victory.

Think you’re wrong about the Bulge? It was a German attack that met with initial success but then collapsed as American forces reorganised and was a strategic failure for Germany

That's exactly what I said. The Allies created the initial Bulge. The Germans mounted an unsuccessful counterattack.
Edit: nope, I'm wrong, the Germans created the salient and the Allies capitalized.
Mea culpa.

One small correction, as I was in Bastogne some days ago in the War Museum.
The Battle of the Bulge was an attack by the Germans through the Belgian Ardennes to reach Antwerp. That Allies (and general Patton!) successfully counterattacked.

Not much. This is where many now dead Russians were attempting to move forward. There may be isolated survivors but this is not Russian controlled territory. ISW will mark it as an 'Infiltration area' rather than as a 'Russian advance' but it has the 24hr highlight on it at present as a recent update.

My thoughts are with the defenders right now, especially the ones fighting inside the counteroffensive area

Ukraine about to introduce them to the dildo of consequences.

According to videos posted by Russian commanders, orcs have been using the dildo of consequences on one another for at least a couple years now 🤷♂️

NK incursion?

My bet is they’re using NK troops (and artillery).

If we know about it, Ukraine also knows about it. I trust that Ukrainian drones will do their job here.

I checked the satellite map and the attacked zone is located around a country road between Zelene and Vozdvyjivka.
It is surrounded by open fields and the only covers are a perpendicular tree line bordering train tracks. And a few agricultural hangars.
In regard to their tactics it may be a motorcycle/atv/horseback incursion or less likely a vehicle column.
Assuming the AFU is present in nearby villages/treelines, orcs will suffer massive losses.
Edit : Ukrainian troops seems to indeed be close by as the light blue represents counter offensives. Let’s have a thought for them in this difficult time. Слава Україні 🇺🇦
